View Full Version : What Are You Like At DIY?

Surprisingly, I'm actually quite good.

While pitiful at anything made three dimensionally by my hands (although my cooking is improving by leaps and bounds!). I seem to have no problem with constructing DIY stuff.

I've had to do some more building as my mother got a new PC - after I destroyed her laptop as reported a week ago - so, guilt ridden I got going and no probs! Completed the desk, chair etc.

I've had to build loads from scratch, cupboards, beds etc - the old conception that no one can understand DIY instructions or can build anything without have that obligatory screw left (to which makes the whole thing collapse) never happens to me..

Does it happen to you?

OOOPs, thought this might be a tread about music. "DIY" is a term oft used to describe music people make at home. I have to get used to people using it in terms of making things for the home!

I don't do that kind of diy, tho I do the kind of DIY I thought the thread was about.

Do it yourself jobs..

I made a carving out of wood once... I don't think that counts, though.

I stink at building desks and stuff. I have little to no problem at the actual building but it is the time test that my creations fail since they start falling apart about 5 months or so later

I've done a few things, like putting together a big home entertainment shelving unit and other wooden things (kinda like really big Lego!), set up my computer on my own and recently made a cake! :D

I've also made stuff in shop class (wooden coat rack, cutting board and clock/metal hammer, c-clamp and Star Trek: TNG communicator pin), assembling beds, rebuilding lawnmower engines, etc...

I'm not super handy or anything, but I'm fairly patient and think things through properly, which helps a lot. :)

Ooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhh. Um...........I made a skeleton out of straws. :D Nah, I like woodwork and stuff, but I don't do it often.

I'm good with my hands, but not with anything pertaining to wood work, unless I have to fix my fence after a wind storm or something. I'm more of a traditional artist than a hands-on kinda guy, I'm afraid.

When I moved off from the on-campus dorms to an apartment I had to buy furniture and assemble them myself. It was fun putting my bed frame and computer desk together. I didn't have power tools and screwing every single screw with a screwdriver just killed my arm. Since then I've put other things together and I really enjoy it. It's like working with really big crafts and puzzles at the same time.

More complex stuff, like desks and other things of that nature, Im pretty good at... Simpler things I tend to get lost on :p

Ah...well now that I've read through and know what DIY is..I'm ok at that stuff.

Sadly I screwed up over the weekend. I purchased a small shelving thingy for my movies and got all the screws in where they belong but fudged up and put them in bass-ackwards. So I need to fix it BUT I have take out all the screws and I'm too lazy at the moment so it'll get fixed later.

I more enjoy doing stuff with decorating projects, if that counts. I like making stuff look pretty and painting stuff and drawing and so forth. I would say I have a little more talent at that.

DIY - obviously a transatlantic garbled communication. DIY refers to Do-It-Yourself constructions - the sort of desks, beds and stuff you get from hardward stores which require construction. I hate them, but end up always doing them.

My bad - I've spoken before to Cal about music DIY and I forgot the difference your side of the big pond...!

I knew what you meant. But you and I are on the same side of the pond. :p I put my PC together and helped my Granndad with some shelves and put my BBQ together. My cokking is top notch. Take note boys, now I do ALL the cooking. Its not worth leraning if someone else in the house can cook. I rarely decide what I get to cook either!

Totally - I'm learning late and hard. Enjoying it too! Being the clutz I am (breaking a wine glass and a laptop in one week is pretty much the definition) I have had a few mishaps, burns, almost setting the kitchen on fire, but I'm getting more adventurous by the day! Now if cooking was like DIY I would be sorted!

Know what you mean. The first thing I cooked in school was cheese on toast, I burnt that! After that when mum was gettting ready to go out I decided to cook a steak for tea. 5 minutes later I was running up the "apples and pears" and wetting a towel to throw on this fire under my grill! After mum made me clean the oven  I made it look better than ever and loved every bite of my beautifully burnt steak. Showed her. Except she wasn't there. :(
