I remember when i made a thread about farts.....it almost instantly got closed. Why? It was deemed disgusting and of bad taste. That got me thinking. Isn't a fart a natural thing? I mean the smell is more disgusting than the name, and we all do it. So why is speaking about it so bad. Why? Because society has deemed it unacceptable to do so.

Same w/ women that don't shave. I mean if they take the natural approach then it's deemed gross. But why, it's just that natural. The hair wouldn't grow there unless it was supposed to.

I guess my question is why are these things taboo to us? Have we been brainwashed by soceity because the majority finds these things unacceptable, or is it our own will? I just find it intriguing that so many things that are really natural are shunned by society.....look at nudity. In america it's a big deal. Overseas, they are more at ease w/ this.

So what do the rest of you think about these taboos? Is it really that crucial that we not discuss or talk about, these things? Does it really matter if a woman doesn't shave? Is it really disgusting? Or have we just been programmed to think just that.

Why are curse words taboo? I've always wondered why one word describing something is bad and another word describing the exact same thing is good. Shrug.

That's another good example...."if you can't say it on the simpsons you can't say it"

I think it's definitely disgusting if a woman doesn't shave. Body hair in general is disgusting to me, on men or women. I haven't been brainwashed, it just seems nicer and cleaner. As for nudity, I think Americans (men and women) in general are just more insecure about their bodies... and about sex.

I think it's disgusting. Just because our bodies can do this stuff doesn't mean other people want to know about it or see it or whatever. Same with taking a dump. There is a door on the bathroom for a reason. Is taking a dump taboo? No, but that doesn't mean I want to sit down and have a conversation with you about it or make a thread about the shapes of our turds (and PLEASE don't do that!). Sometimes I think conversation can get a little too...familar. These are things I don't mind joking around with when with family or close friends, but not in public, and not on a public message board.

I guess. It's not a subject that bothers me. The only subjects that i have any uncomfortability talking about is my sisters rape and my butthole dad. Why? Because it makes me cry.

The question is, what makes it so disgusting? I find it facinating. Do you know we lose our bowels when we die? I don't think there's anything shameful about talking about my poop. It's just poop.....who cares....i don't think natural things should be looked on as disgusting. But that's just me i guess.....

Not really, it's just that there are alot of immature people who just take fart jokes and such to the point where it's just irritating, and so it's better left undiscussed when unneeded.

Farting in public isn't taboo or anything, it's just people don't want to know or smell them and it's called common courtesy when you at least try to make it to the bathroom or a private area to do it in.

Granted they're not as widespread as it is for women, but alot of places require men to not have facial hair as well because it's considered "unclean." Actually your logic of "The hair wouldn't grow there unless it was supposed to" is flawed considering there are people who are born without the ability to grow facial hair, mainly Asians, IIRC.

When you're mature enough to make your own decisions, it's definitely your own opinion that it is causing it.

Look at Afghnistan, they wouldn't even let women show their face! :p Yes, America is more strict on stuff like nudity, but ya know, sex isn't everything. More people would rather that stay private rather than in public because while they know you've got it, they don't want to see it. Some call it "sexual repression" but the point is if their reasoning is gonna be "it's just nudity" then they should realize theres no real point to mass nudity so it's better kept where it has a point.

I'm not just talking about facial hair though....i'm talking about body hair. Pubic hair. The whole shabang.

Is it really our own opinion? If not shaving was the accepted thing and shaving was the taboo, would the same people still see it as "gross". I highly doubt. It's actually pretty interesting how many "opinions" people take on because they are taught that it is wrong. Even i thought it was nasty once. But then i thought, why do i think this way?

I mean don't you find it interesting that kids have no concept or race, nor do they really care, until their parents start pointing things like that out. That's where my question comes in. Is it really our own opinion, or are we brainwashed to thinking it is?

Nudity isn't a real problem for me ( I'm brazilian, though I live in England ). Women shouldn't have body hair, it's disgusting...not brainwashed, it is just a matter of taste, Europeans don't mind hair that much...

It may not be shameful. I mean, it's not like I think people should be embarassed to go to the bathroom. It's just that you may think that it's ok to talk about, but really, I doubt that many people want to hear about it. Might be funny to joke around with friends, but on day to day social relations, I say it's just best to keep it to yourself.

I'm not a man who has any real hang ups. Certainly I don't condemn women for hair considering they have to put up with some of the most grotesquely sweaty and hairy men - how do they put with men, eh? :)

But when it comes to forums, there have to be taboos. People have different value, and being part of a friendly community is recognizing this. You may have no problem with talking about such others find embarrassing, but some do and for that it's courteous to limit some of our conversation topics.

It's different to being in a chat room and such a topic comes up, that's a group choice, but when you post here, you are talking to people not with them and as such a little more sensitivity is required, regardles of you ethics/politics/tabboos or lack of!

Can be irritating, but it's the sacrifice to have a community where everyone feels comfortable posting!

I think having gigantic beards for men is now considered unattractive. Though it is interesting. In the past we try to differ the two sexes in every way possible. I forgot the actual term. We emphasize the difference. Men have body hair, therefore women shouldnt. Men have beards, women don't. Men are muscular, women are not muscular. Though recently adrogeny seems to be kicking in. Males look slightly more feminine, and females look slightly more masculine. It is interesting...but this going offtopic, I'm sorry.

Speaking as an asian bodyhair is not taboo its just distasteful. if you see a girl walking in the street with legs hairier than kingkong's :D , we wouldn't make her an outcast or something

A lot of women in various Asian countries don't shave their legs though. It's not as much a social hara-kiri like it is here.

Farts smell bad. Why? Because our brains are programmed that way. Excrement smells and tastes bad because it's not healthy to pick it up or eat it. It has germs in it and it's something your body is trying to get rid of. So that's why farts are taboo.

Although social practices may differ radically from place to place, arguably most of them are based on human instinct. And the fart one just happens to be one of the easiest to explain.

As for why people wear clothes, well, it would be kind of hard to concentrate on what you're doing sometimes otherwise, wouldn't it?

Only because nudity is taboo....believe me if everyone walked around naked for centuries then being naked now wouldn't be as distracting. Same as hairyness and other things...it all depends on how people are brought up. If they've been taught from the getgo that so and so is acceptable you. That's the beauty of being "brainwashed"....you don't think otherwise
