All right, we're smack dab in the middle of winter and, upon stepping on my not-so-trusty electronic scale yesterday, I discovered that I had, in fact, packed on a few pounds of holiday-related "winter-weight". Now I know I'm not fat, I don't look it, but I'm pondering as to how close I am to becoming so, if I don't eat better or excercise more frequently.
Anyhow, I was just wondering if there are others out there that are thinking the same thing, or you could really care less at this point in your life.
*STEPS ON THE SCALE AGAIN* 186? Yeesh. :p

I'm not fat, but I eat very unhealthy. I have some kind of talent -- every time I eat, I don't look any fatter. But, I do gain weight (even if I can't see it), and it doesn't help that I'm already bad at sports and athletics.
As I type this, I am munching on some Doritos. Earlier, I was eating some Ritz and before that I was eating Flavor Blasted Xtra Cheddar Goldfish. I care, but I don't care enough to stop snacking. :yawn:

Sometimes, but it's not a big deal to me. I mean, I'm not fat, but I'm not thin-as-a-rail skinny either - I'm somewhere in the middle. I do a lot of walking and running though.

I don't watch it - I don't gain weight - I lose it, so I have to be careful I don't go too thin, especially as my appetite has been lacking of late.... I used to be a chubby kid, but since seven, I've never had excess weight - which is one less worry of my mind... :)

I don't watch my weight much since the only time I can gain anything is when I'm actually trying to (and even that's 50/50). I do care, though, as I'd rather not be over or under weight, for health reasons.

Given I do weightlifting as one pursuit (mostly on machines instead of free weights, lacking another person to serve as "spotter"), I suppose I'm concerned about weight as well (though mainly putting on muscle, not being fat/overweight)... :-)

After realizing some time last year that I would soon have to buy new pants and clothes one more size higher than what I was currently wearing, I swore to lose weight. I had done it before, and I was going to do it again.
In high school, I was quite hefty, and lost a ton of weight over the summer of my junior year and my senior year. Over the years, I gradually put it back on, and around April last year, I had enough and decided that the best way to go was to just get rid of it.
I read up on vitamins and the benefits you can get from them, and concluded that I could lose weight just by increasing vitamins in my daily routine. I got the daily vitamin packs (the ones with the big horse pill type vitamins, not those pretend one a day vitamins that are, IMO, just crap) and I stopped drinking pop and started to drink energy drinks (like Sobe, the ones that are like packed with vitamins) and I also read up on foriegn diets. Most people around the world actually eat fattier foods than us, and sometimes more than us, but yet America is the fattest country on the planet, and our friends across the ocean stay trim. Why was that? Because they eat a right balance of food, they don't snack between meals, and they don't eat late at night. It's best to eat your largest meal for lunch.
I changed just a few key factors in my diet:
1) no snacking. At all. I had to cut this out entirely. And with vitamins and the energy drinks, it was relatively easy to do. Vitamin B is especially helpful in surpressing appetite.
2) do not eat after 6pm. This is also a big one that is important to follow. Your body just cannot break down the foods in your system that fast, so if you eat after 6 pm (or 7pm, I guess depending on your time zone, but I play it safe with 6pm), your body won't break down all that food before you go to bed, and you'll just lie there getting fatter. Same with if you eat right before you go to bed. That's never a good idea.
3) I cut way down on the quantity of food I ate, and ate healthier. Just because I take the variety of viatmins that help convert my carbs into energy and all that does not give me liberty to eat McDonald's five times a day. I had to eat less, but with the help of the vitamins, I was able to get by on less food for quite a long period of time.
In the course of maybe 5 or 6 months, I dropped 40 pounds. I have rather maintained that for a while now, but I also eat a tad more than I used to, and I can't say I am faithful about that no snacking rule I had. I want to lose probably another 60 pounds, so it's time to buckle down and work on it some more.
As to why I am doing this, I want to look better (of course), feel better (and I do! I don't get so out of breath carrying loads of laundry up and down the stairs!!), and also to give me some more time on life. I don't want to be turning 60 and have diabetes because I didn't eat right or lose the weight when I should have.

Wow! Good for you!
I always used to be super skinny as a kid, but now I have to always keep on the ball in terms of exercise to avoid putting on weight. I'm basically one of those people who can eat whatever they want, and just get really, really fat.

ive never been TERRIBLY overweight but i do tend to swing from being pretty good weight wise to kinda bad
right now im at the "kinda bad" stage b/c of the hollidays etc but once i get back to school and the gym i'll be alright again

I can eat all I want and I stay small. Still I need to start working on my abs a little. But I try not to work out cause I hear that if I stop working out when I'm older all my muscle will turn to fat.
And I'm so lazy.
I don't worry about my weight. But then, I'm really skinny. I've been called a "thin eater", which I'm told means I only eat when I'm hungry and stop when I'm full. This is true, which makes for interesting looks from my friends parents when I eat at their house. They always taught their kids to clean their plates. I never understood that, becuase your body won't tell you to eat less than you need, or more than you need either.

I've only started to get self-conscious about my weight. My weight is higher than average for my age: 175 pounds. However, I'm tall, so the weight is distrubted in a way that doesn't make me look "fat." Certainly not thin, however. I'll alternate from flabby to beer gut too and that's something that ticks me off.
My family bought a Bowflex and I'll play around on it for...five minutes. But I'm just so incredibly lazy and weak that I can't help but look at it as a chore.
Funny, smack in the middle of winter break I lost weight and was actually able to distinguish abs. Last weekend I started chowing down on some cereal right before bed and the next day I ate school food which is basically compacted grease. I awoke to find a Santa-belly in its place. of my short-lived "six pack".
How do they expect kids to stay fit in my school if they keep on serving us that crap?

the way my weight is distributed, it makes me look like a big guy-- not fat but like a bulwark -- ive naturally got a big chest so i'll never appear scrawny

I don't have to watch my weight. I have a high metabolism and eat all the time. You should see me at an all you can eat buffet. Never gain an ounce. :D. I weigh about 170, but hardly any of it is fat. I just work out every night, or every other night. I try to keep in shape.

Yes, I do! Being a kiney-transplant-recipient, I must watch what I eat and, of course, get as much exercise as possible. I do that by going for occasional walks outside, as long as the weather is good. Also, as long as I continue to take all of my medications, I'll be ok. If my I should gain 5 pounds overnight, then something's wrong with me. This is the main reason why I must check my weight every morning.

Yeah they have said people like us just have to sit on are ass to burn fat. I'm 6'2, 175 which is kinda bad for someone my height. But hell I eat healthy and unheatly food all the time but don't gain an ounce. But I look at it this way, even though I have very high metabolism system (which requires you to just think and you'll burn fat) I try to watch what kind of eating habits I have cause high metabolism doesn't stay with you forever. But luckily basketball keeps my brother and me in shape.

This is really interesting because I just saw a presentation on what a person should weigh at varying heights.
Some of you folks might hate me for what I'm gonna say, but I'll say it anyway. I'm underweight and need to gain some pounds. Usually I gain about 5 pounds during the holiday season due to all those yummy fat laden goodies. I usually take it off by spring via softball. However, I was exhausted and slept alot, keeping weird hours this year. I ate about once a day, fiddled around online with some stuff, slept, baked cookies, went back to sleep...that was it. I lost about 7 pounds over two weeks due to hibernation, and that drops me to about 100 lbs. I am short (5'3", almost 5'4"), but my weight should be at least 108, according to the presentation, and even that is borderline. I'm not anorexic, just too lazy to get out of bed and get something to eat, and when I do, it's usually junk food that goes in and out of the system. Like SJJ, I don't have much of an appetite to start with and I have superfast metabolism, so gaining when I'm busy at school is almost impossible.

Yes. I really like to keep an eye on my weight. I don't freak if it goes a few pounds up or anything, especially around the holidays because it's just going to happen with all the parties and such. But I work out and I like to keep my weight in a particular range. On average I'm 120, and I'd like to keep in there or a little under....haven't stepped on a scale in a few weeks, and I wont until I get back in my gym routine again.

I constantly have to watch my weight, for swimming and track. Gaining to much weight could mean a lot in those sports. I exercise all the time, so it's not that hard to do. I must eat foods that fit into a "healthy diet" by my coaches.

I'm kinda in the same boat as GS, I'm actually trying to gain weight. I've always had a really fast metabolism, so I can eat as much as I want and not gain a single pound. My weight has been in the same 5 lb range for the last couple years. For better or for worse, I'm naturally not a big fan of junk food. Never been a big fan of chips and etc (well except for pretzels) and my sweet tooth has really declined in the past year.

I do now. I have always been naturally very muscular but I was also quite fat so I weighed a lot. So I do watch my weight and care about it...very much so, I'm extremely healthy now, work out everyday. I have low cholesterol and blood pressure.....but I used to weigh 225 pounds as compared to my 170 now (but hardly any of it is fat) so it's something I won't ever stop watching or caring about. I try to stay muscular and athletic now because of all the BS I went through when I was fat. I was fat all through middle school and it was a horrible time for me. Oh and BTW for everyone that is fat...it's not too much fat that gets you fat....it's too much carbs...cut the carbs down to 50 a day...trust me on this one...I lost all the fat (55 pounds) in less than 3 months by cutting out carbs and I have kept it off. So yeah the whole "fat is bad for you, carbs are good" thing...it's BS. Damn that food pyramid and it's deceptive claims! :p

Since college, where I was exetremely active... I have to watch my weight becuse of the various reasons (over worked, cant get out to work out, cant find a new dojo to start karate again). I have started to watch what I eat, changing my diet to reflect the kind of activities I do now (like ZorBrak did, Ive cut wa down on the carbs).

Of course I care. When people get overweight the tend to need more medical attention, and they get all kinds of disorders. I was bigger in middle school, and being made fun of is not fun. Sure, I acted like I didn't care what they thought, but I did. Luckily, my freshmen year of hs (last year), I got much more excercise, and I started eating healthier (though I looooove the junk food). I went down resonably and have kept my current weight (and lower) for over a year. :)
I've never had to really care about that kind of stuff. I can eat anything as much as I want and never gain a pound. But I still exercise a lot so that helps too. :p

I have a friend who's also got a similar problem to yours. He used to be skinny as hell, so what he did was to up his food intake massively. He eats about 6 meals a day I think! All high carb foods as well. He also started lifting weights regularly, and taking protein shakes as supplements etc. I think in three months he's put on about 20 lbs, and he plans to put on another 20lbs to get to his ideal weight.
On the other hand, I've been training to lose weight. I'm only 5'6", and I used to weigh about 170lbs. So I started dieting first, basically I went vegetarian every second meal, cut out snacks, and cut out red meat altogether. Recently I've started working out, and lifting weights as well, and I've manged to lose about 20lbs in around three months, doing both. I plan to lose another 10lbs to get to my ideal weight, and then I just want to build a bit more muscle. What I'm really aiming for is a six pack :D

Well I have a very fast metabolizm (bad spelling I know)
If I sleep for 10 hrs straight I will loose 4 lbs.
I have to eat all the time or I will just waste away. really
Now that I have gotten into my 30's I have been told that I will slow down alittle so that will be nice to actually keep at one weight.
Also I now have a desk job so I am sure going from a very physical job to a mental job will make a big difference.
I have a drawer full of Kit Kats and 3 Musketters to keep me going.

Funny thing about weight...it can sneak up on a person. I had always weighed much more than I looked, but my frame could handle the weight. Being 6'2", I never looked fat or heavy, just kinda bulky. Once college ended and the real world took over, time for exercise slowly disappeared. I had been a comfortable 205 to 210 lbs. (and, until college was over, I could eat 3 tons of anything and never gain a ounce). As my sit in my cubicle all day job took hold, my outward expansion began. At my heaviest I hit 250 and did not feel comfortable at all.
I then did what a few here have mentioned...I cut out the carbs. Pretzels (big pretzel junkie here), pizza, bread, pop...you name it. If it had carbs I tried my best to cut it out. That was the summer of '02. Since then I'm down to around 215 and feeling much better. A few months back I bought new pants as my others were too big...and now even the smaller ones are getting baggy.
The biggest thing for me was getting some discipline concerning my eating habits. I love eating, but learning to quell my desires for instand food gratification.
Thank God. Once a 40 waist was staring me in the face, I knew a change was needed.

I do not step on the scale very frequently, but I definitely care about my weight. I need to eat snacks from time to time to prevent losing weight, the amount of them per week depending on the amount of exercise. I would be upset if I gained any considerable amount of weight.

Somewhat. I'm an average size, so I'm not obsessive about my weight. I care now more than I used to because the last two times for my Physical Fitness Test, I was "overweight" according to military standards. Last year I was on the brink of getting taped (measurement of neck, waist, and wrist to calculate body fat percentage) but this year I got taped. Of course the results came back like, .01% or something. This year I haven't been excercising everyday like the last two years, and having a buffet style cafeteria doesn't help either. :(
Calhoun's absolutely right about the intake of fast foods, though. Moderation is the key (unless it's water :)). Restaurant serving sizes are for more than one person, so I always end up taking the rest home for an easy meal.
One thing I'd like to add on Cahoun's list is water. Energy drinks are good, but water is also important. Sometimes hunger is mistakened for thirst, so when you get snack or hunger cravings, try drinking water, adding lemon if you need some flavor. Water is great - I totally cut back on soda and caffinated drinks by drinking water.
The best diet I've witnessed that works is the calorie diet - keeping a count of your caloric intake each day. I don't know how it works because I'm not so heavyweight that they've forced me on a diet, but two of my friends did that and it worked for them.
My only bad habit is sweets - cookies, candies....I can't resist! But Calhoun has some great advice that I'll need to keep all those sergeants and the major off my back this semester! :)

I have a very fast metabalism (at least for now) so i dont worry too much about it. Recently, though, ive been excersising more, and eatin a little better.

I watch my weight occasionally, though less now, since I'm no longer on my school's wrestling team. (Switched to winter track...just as good, and just as hard.) I weigh about 165 lbs, but I'm also tall, over 6 foot. I exercise a lot too. Since I'm on track, I'll usually be sprinting or running a couple of miles three times a week, and on other days I usually work out with weights.

Darn you people with a fast metabolism *shakes fist* :p Dunno what happened with mine, but it decided to slow down. It probably is still at a good pace, but it's a lot slower then when I was younger. I remember being in elementary and junior high and eating anything I wanted at whatever amount and it would never show. Then again, I was always in one sport or another in my earlier years, and that helped a lot too. Once I got to high school, fatty foods were everywhere I looked and I didn't do track or tennis after my freshman year. That's when I started going to the gym, but it's not nearly the same as the rigorous practice I used to have in my sports. Looking forward to my second semester of Uni because I'm taking my PE credits this year, woo for Cross Training!

Nope. I'm one of a lucky few who doesn't have to. I eat off and on all day, and stay fit looking. My mother envies me. :p
The only time I was concerned with my weight was when I was fairly sick, and on these pills. I lost 24 pounds, and it freaked me out. Luckily I was medically cleared to stop taking them, and I'm back to my normal weight again. :)

Yea, Wrestlers have to watch their weight constanly. For me I have to weigh inbetween 215.1 and 277 in order to wrestle in the weight class I'm at, 275. I naturaly weigh around 250, so I don't have to worry all that much. Although I had someone tell me in Florida that I look like I don't weigh a pound over 220. Ah well!

I rarely care about my weight. Good thing too, as those "recogmended" diets don't have enough in them for my body. I don't eat as much as I should now and suffer from the occasional low pressure. With what those nutritionist say I should be eating, i wouldn't be able to move.
