Adult Swim thoughts go here

So here I am sitting at home killing time, and I get tommorrow off (It's Labour Day) and most everyone else here is probably watching or will watch Adult Swim in an hour or so. I don't get CN, but I have an interest in how this block will do, as there has been a fair amount of coverage on it. In particular, I want to know what people think of Home Movies, The Brak Show and CB.

I've read a few reviews that were mixed on the block, with only a few programs being genuinely "good," but I want to see what everyone else here thinks first. That's how much I value your opinions, guys. :)

Brak Show just aired, it was alright. I liked how his father looked like Walt Disney.

Ah, I forget that some of you live west of me, so it's very late up here a bit on the east. Tommorrow is a holiday for me before I go back to school, so I'm just killing time now.

I'm surfing the web and watching a local airing of "Rocky II" at the same time. Pure cheese entertainment...

Birdman Attorney at Law just aired. It wasn't all that funny, I was kind of disapointed. I liked the part with Vultror and him fighting though.

The problem with one or two of the shows on the block is that they are simply shows that digitally edit material from older kid's cartoons and slap new dialogue onto them. I'd like to hear how successful you think they were.

Sea Lab and Capt. Linger just aired.

I didn't find Sealab that funny. Usually Low brow stuff doesn't get me ya know. However the refrences to A moddest proposal (a book by Guliver's travel author John Swift about eating children), and Dr. Dey (East side) were pretty funny. The thing about black Debby was pretty funny though. Really nice satire on sterio types.

Captian Linger was not all that hillarious either.

Gawd, Rocky II is so corny. But hey, this kind of stuff brings a smile to my face every once in a while. I'll screw around here for a while longer before hitting the sack.

1st Space Ghost just aired, he was marryed to some guy who was dressed like a girl. A few funny lines though.

"They're my best freinds that's why I married you so that I wouldn't have them anymore."

2nd Space Ghost has aired. It had Randy Savage as SG's Grandfather. Pretty funny dialouge betwenn him and Moltar.

"If the Ref didn't see it, it never happened."

But now it's coming up Larry your good freind.

Ok, AS just finished airing. Here's my breakdown -

Home Movies - When this series first aired on UPN a few season ago I dismissed it. I just didn't like it. Tonight I discovered that it's not quite as bad as I remember but it still could be better.

The Brak Show - the first one was all right, but the second one was pure gold.

Harvey Birdman: AAL - it was ok, but I was expecting more. I can only hope it gets better. The strange thing to me was that the other William’s Street productions (except for Aqua Teen Hunger Force, not shown tonight) use the "cut and paste" SGC2C style while HBAAL uses completely original animation.

Sealab 2021 - again it was ok and I was laughing at a few spots (I can't believe they got away with that scene, those who saw it know what I'm talking about.) Like HBAAL, I hope it does get better.

SGC2C - I have to say, what is up with the new season? It's like the new episodes are on a sugar binge or something. The first episode I thought was fair but could have been better. The second (the one with Space Ghost's grandpa) was a repeat, but still as good as I remember. And it's one of my fav's too.

Cowboy Bebop - I am very please with the way CN handled the series. The first two episodes were very, very lightly edited. The edits I could remember were: some of the blood digitally edited out (not completely removed, most of it was still there, just enough was cut to keep the show at a TV-14 VL rating), the bullet hole through the barkeeper's head in "Asteroid Blues" was digitally removed, and the word s*** was either redubed as damn or cut out. Other than that everything else was there. Everything from the original opening to the ending credits with "The Real Folk Blues" being sung in Japanese with English subtitles.


For delivering some promising series, some good jokes and excellent handling on CB I give Adult Swim a solid 7.9 out of 10. I want to give it an 8 but all together it felt like something I can't quite put my finger on was missing. In my opinion if you missed tonight try to give it a chance and catch the encore presentation Thursday at 10 pm.

Anywho, I know I'll be watching next Sunday believing that it can only get better.

Actually, Iceland singer Björk really is a girl. I always thought she was a bit crazy after she wore a swan to the Oscars, but now when someone thinks she's a man, I know she's cuckoo.

I read good reaction to Home Movies, but Sealab and Brak got slammed hard at times. Many people thought the humour was too juvenile--potty humour and racist type of jokes.

Well, there can be no excuses from anime fans for CB if this keeps up. This is as "unedited" as one can get on a major cable network like CN, with a dub widely regarded by fans as one of the best out there. You either like it or you don't--there is no "If only you saw it unedited..."

By the way, I heard the blood on Asimov and Katarina's ship was painted black in the end...

I kinda tuned out Home Movies after about ten minutes. I just think they could get something better. As for Brak, I am glad this show is back on and I thought it was funny, as I did with Harvey Birdman. Captain Linger had the feel of a Smigel cartoon, but of course, the same animation studio that did Smigle's cartoons did the toons for adult swim, well most of them. And I loved their designs on Harvey Birdman. I am looking forward to more episodes of that. And seeing new Space Ghost...well, how could anybody say anything bad about that? Oh, and Sealab....well, again, it had this feeling of a long Smigel cartoon, which is a compliment, by the way. I didn't watch all of Cowboy Bebop, tho, cuz I have the DVDs.

Sorry I forgot about that, but what do you want I was typing that after 1 am. :p

The blood was painted black in one scene but then when they zoom in on Katarina, right before the police open fire, it was all there and as red as blood should be.

Adult Swim!

Home Movies: Most people don't "get" the Squigglevision shows, and, well, I'm one of them. The off-the-cuff conversations approach the threshold of "slightly amusing," but doesn't quite get there. Just too darn droll for me. The only time I even registered interest was with the Kafka video bits.

The Brak Show: Ah, not too shabby! The show was a bit slow in places and Zorak was more vulgar than usual, but it shows huge promise. Brak sings! And for limited animation, everything was surprisingly crisp... the "time shed" montage was impressively done.

Harvey Birdman: I can see why this is the best liked of the Adult Swim shows. True, it wasn't non-stop hilarious, but it had many, many funny bits, from Vulturo's way of talking to the Palm Pilot ("how do you make a 't' again?) to the judge ("shut yer hole!") inexplicably coughing up a live squirrel. And considering the library of old TV cartoons that can potentially show up on "Birdman," I think this is one program with legs.

Sealab 2021: This, on the other hand, may get old fast. I was amused by this episode, particularly with the "black Debbie" conversation, but most of the humor seems to come from juxtaposing baudy adult humor with a bland kid's cartoon. But we'll see.

Space Ghost: Hey, it's Space Ghost! Maybe I've just been starved for new episodes (it's been almost two years), but I was so glad to see this talk show again. It's more inexplicable than ever (when did SG marry Bjork?), but still in a great way. This episode was above average. I was dissapointed that we didn't get to see Aqua Teen Hunger Force, but the Randy Savage episode of SG is a classic.

Cowboy Bebop: Hmmm, interesting. I really, really like the music on this, and the animation is top-notch. I'm enjoying the main character, and there's just enough noir-ish humor here. Okay, I'm hooked. By the way, for anyone that knows, what's the connection between CB and Outlaw Star?

Cowboy Bebop--The connection between CB and Outlaw Star is that they are made by the same studio (though they the used newer talent on OS and proven talent on CB) and came out at the same time. That's about it. I guess Sunrise was on a western jag at the time...

Yeah it was satirical. Even a mention of a moddest proposal by Swift. One of the great works of satire. If anything they where attacking sterotypes.

Of course it wasn't. It wasn't supporting racist ideals, but making fun of them, especially when everybody else got on him about the "White Debbie" issue. It was all in good fun. People who got upset by that probably think the Cuz I'm High song from Jay and Silent Bob is actually PROMOTING drugs. You have to take this stuff in context, folks.
