This is the title of the new GitS theatrical movie coming in 2004, and being co-produced by Studio Ghibli

Here's a link to the full article (http://animenewsnetwork.com/article.php?id=2937).

I wonder if this means that Disney will own the distribution rights to this in the US since Ghilbi is co-producing, or will Production IG be free to find their own distributor(most likely Bandai) for an eventual US release.

Also, I wonder if this will be a follow up to GitSTV or to the movie. I guess we'll just have to wait as more news becomes available.

Miramax (owned by Disney) DOES own the rights to the 2nd Ghost in the Shell movie, so it's possible. I wonder when the 2nd movie is going to be released in Japan and then here.

2004? That seems along way off... At least we will be treated to GitS when it comes to AS. GitS is still pretty new in Japan.

GOOD LORD!

Studio Ghibli is co-producing a GITS movie?! The house that brought us Totoro is taking on the ol' ultraviolence?

Feels weird, and a little uncomfortable... I'd kinda prefer if Ghibli kept their artistic feel intact, and not to insult GITS fans, but it doesn't seem a Motoko Kusanagi movie would keep up that image.

Bizarre...

For some reason I doubt Disney will be promoting the new GITS movie very strongly, but that's just my personal opinion.

Hopefully Production IG (or PIG as I call them; not an insult, just a funny acronym) will be able to chose a different distributor. I just don't see Disney wanting to have their name stamped on a movie that has a certain shapely female cast member running around in a skin tight outfit that doesn't leave much to the imagination.

Some people might be surprised that Disney did go for Spirited Away, but anybody who has seen the movie realizes it's far from edgy. Sure, it has a heavy Shinto feel to it, but most all anime's these days do, it's no big whoop. It will be interesting to see how PIG handles the American distroing of the movie since they have an American branch. Other production houses like Ghibli don't so it's somewhat new ground PIG will be exploring.

As for Ghibli's established style (Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service) the GITS TV series really isn't that violent, at least not the first 2 episodes. There will always be rapid fire machine guns and mecha present in GITS, but the writers do a great job balancing it out with thought provoking scripts. I think Ghibli will handle the job nicely, though their actions over the past year concerning the red tint scandal going on with Spirited Away has brought them into question in my eyes.

That's good news, I guess. I don't think it'll air on AS though.

Oshii and Studio Ghilbi have both been interested in working with each other, though Oshii's thoughts on Studio Ghilbi are interesting to say the least. (http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/interviews/oshii_on_mt.html) It will be interesting to see how this film will come out. I have a feeling that it will be very serious and much darker than the average Ghilbi film, but I'm sure Ghilbi's presence will be shown on way or another. I am looking forward to this film, as Ghost in the Shell is one of my favorite anime movies. Hopefully, this teaming up will not end up like A.I. Artificial Intelligence, where you had Spielberg's stories of hope and likeable characters mixed with Stanley Kubrick's cynicism.

It's hard to imagine sitting in a theater seeing the GITS movie and right before the film starts, the "Ghibli Totoro logo" pops up on screen. That's gonna scar me for the rest of my life. :p

Definetely deflates the Ghibli mystique. Granted, I've never been much of a Ghibli fan anyway.

A.I. had hope in it from the beginning. Even when Kubrick was alive, he was thinking that Spielberg should direct it. That's very OT though.

Anyway, I have a feelng that Ghibli's presence will probably show in the animation more than anything else. It'll be very consistant, uniform, fluid and clean. Granted, this movie probably needs that. Also, if they get a chance to add some tinges and tweaks to the character design, you'll see it there too. I doubt Oshii will let anyone have much say if any in the story development and movement. If it is, the end result may have an AI-ish feel to it, but because of actual conflict, not perceived conflict.

Hurm. I don't think Ghibli being involved is that big of a deal. They did do Mononoke and Grave of the Fireflies, both dramatic and dark films for adults and older teens. I know they've done family entertainment with stuff like Kiki, but they also work on animation for older audiences. (Ag, if only Disney could learn from them.) Plus they're co-producing, so it's not quite a Ghibli film. I've noticed other studios I like such as Gainex work on some other studio's projects or co-produce them. I know FLCL was mainly Gainex and Production IG.

Actually according to what an artcile had said in an Anime Invasion, The second Gits moive is being based off of the second Gits Manga, ManMachine Interface.
