I got to the bank today and the first thing when I walk thru the door, the guard walks up to me and asks me if anybody called me over the weekend. Sounded rather urgent to me, I thought, and I was worried. Did we get robbed? Did somebody die? What is going on???
Each year at the bank Christmas party, they give away a bonus prize. Everybody who wins an Eagle Award gets their name put in for each Eagle Award they won. You get an Eagle Award each time you go "above and beyond" normal service. I don't know how many I had over the past year, maybe six awards. I didn't really keep track. Anyway, last year I think I told you how they drew my name but I wasn't at the party, so I didn't get the bonus prize. Some other bozo from another branch got my prize money and she didn't even buy me lunch! Yeah, I was bitter about that for a while.
Not too eager to go this year to a Christmas party where they don't let you win your prize if you're not there, I didn't go. For that reason, but also mainly because I had no idea where it was at this year. It is in some theater in Westport, I've been to Westport only once when I had to go to a Blockbuster out there, got lost, meandered my way for a couple hours til I got back home. It was not fun, I hate driving in areas I am unfamilar with. So I said to the branch manager this year I would only go if I could carpool. Nobody offered me a ride, so I wound up just working at Blockbuster that night. Oh, well, big deal.
So I get to the bank this morning, as I said before, and the guard is all urgently asking if anybody called me over the weekend. WHY???? What's wrong???? It turned out they drew my name for the prize AGAIN. Oh, great, two years in a row, I wasn't there and lost out both times. Yeah, thanks, that's just wonderful.
But it turns out since they have branches out of the city limits now, and people who can't get there to the party, they chose to do away with that rule this year, and I actually did win the prize money. Only 4 people won, and I was one of them. And it was $500.00, like every other year. They deposited into my account this morning.
Of course people at work are wondering if I will buy them all lunch or whatever, and I am like NO. Well, I didn't say no, I just said that I would give them the same thing our branch manager gave us when she got her bonus for the branch not getting any over time (and she got a big bonus). Nothing, zilch, zip. And I said I'd give them the same thing the lady who won last year in place of me gave me. Sorry, but that money is staying in my pocket. I should put part of it into savings as well. Just in case anything goes wrong with my car, anyway. But why should I give the people I work with anything out of that? As if they would give me anything if they won? When my branch manager told somebody else I was treating them all to a Christmas dinner, I brought up how we didn't see any of that bonus each of us helped her earn for not having any overtime that year, and she said, "I buy you pizzas all the time." Yeah, that comes out of an expense account that every branch has that allows managers to treat their employees to lunch every now and then. And they did order pizza today, AFTER I ATE the lunch I brought, and I thought I'd take a slice or two home with me for dinner, and it was all gone, they ate it all. Yeah, they get the same thing from me that I got out of that pizza today.
The branch manager wasn't happy for me that I won, either. She was mad because they changed the rules that you have to be present to win. My assertation last year was that it wasn't like a physical prize you have to walk out the door with, it's a cash prize that they will cut a check for later. And I never did see my check first hand, they deposited into my account at the main bank and sent me the receipt. They could have done that last year for me, too.
