2 Van Goughs were stolen from the Van Gough Art Museum in Amsterdam. This following a gem heist just a few days before. Sounds like a case for the Bat.
Such daring robberies, the norm in this genre, but truly spectacular in reality.
The paintings were said to have no market value because they are not for sale. I wonder if they were stolen to be fenced...or if this was an inside job.
What if the museum had become old hat, attendance figures were dropping. What better way to scare up some interest than by staging a robbery. And what if those paintings were recovered. I'm certain the museum would be overwhelmed with eager collector's wanting to own those paintings. Collectors love to own items that have a history. What they're really buying is a story...and to be part of that story.
The job itself wasn't very spectacular. Thieves used a stepladder, smashed a window, and made off with the paintings. Very crude...but effective. The police repsonded about 10 minutes after the alarm had sounded but the perps were long gone. I guess we're used to reading about museums having electric grids and infrared spycams...and guards at every post.
