My parents want to take me and my siblings to Hawaii in January. And we have to take an AIRPLANE!! Does anybody have any tips for a first-time flyer?
This may sound totally dumb, but I can't help but get nervous when I think about it. My parents have flown tons of times, and my little brother and sister are excited about it.
I've never been on a plane before. I'm only a boring 13-year-old who falls asleep on the bus, which has a good chance of crashing anyway! Ugh...just now my brother started making fun of my fear....
"Are you scared it's gonna CRASH?? Is Bin Laden gonna come up and go BOOM?!?!?!"
.....But I'm not scared of the Bin Laden thing.....just....well..... I don't even know!!
Eeep.......

It's no big deal. Aside from all of the waiting you'll have to do in various lines beforehand, the flight itself is kinda fun. I always found takeoff and landing a little thrilling, and it's fun to look out of the window at the clouds and everything below. Just make sure to bring some stuff to occupy your time on the plane. Books, Game Boy, comics, etc. Also, bring some gum to chew in case your ears pop. It's usually not that bad if it even happens at all, but my brother used to cry about it when he was a kid.

I used to think flying was fun when I was little. I guess as long as you try to relax and not think about it, there's not that much to be afraid of, but I'm always kind of scared when I have to fly. The only weird parts are taking-off and landing, but also the plane makes a lot of strange noises, which can be kind of freaky, and turbulence is always scary. I just tell myself, "It's safer than driving", and order another screwdriver :dot:. Anyway, if you're going to Hawaii, you'll probably be too excited to be scared. Have fun.

Odds are much higher that they are gona loose your lugage then anything happen to the plane your on.
There nothing you can do but take a disc man and make sure it works or security will think its a bomb (idoits) and lissen to music and try and relax during the flight.

I don't like flying, take it from someone who has never flew in anything, anyway before. Well, that's a lie, but since I can barely remember when it happened, it doesn't count... I avoid planes and boats at all costs. Trains are alright.

Bring gum because of the pressure changes as you are going up and down :p

Those railroad tracks are in horrible shape in the east coast, and even worse out west with all those mountains. You might as well slingshot yourself to your destination.
Seriously though, Moonbay, flying isn't bad at all. It's fun. On a trip to France, my friends and I spent the whole time playing spades on top of the emergency exit door. One word of advice though: It's probably better if you fall asleep. Ever seen "The Langoliers?"

No, you sit on the aisle - in case the plane crashes, you can get away.

In the VERY unlikely event of a plane crash...It really wouldn't matter where you sit. But I say this to help you Moonbay, because I don't want your experience to be ruined (the view) because you thought that You would have a better chance of surviving the trip if you sat in the asile...instead of watching the view. :D

Yeah, besides, if the plane crashes, the window is now an exit.

Thanks for the help, guys. I feel better now. Now I listen to my parents arguing over ticket prices without getting butterflies. ^________^
Seriously, some tips I hear from others are just plain out of nowhere... "Stay away from the food and you'll be ok!" O.o
Oh, and is it true the windows rattle from the clouds? I'm such a travel rookie.....

I highly doubt it. Clouds are nothing more then dust particles and condesation. Plane windows are ultra thick...the entire plane is practicly air tight, because the air pressure out side the plane is much diffrent to the pressure in the plane.

This is just something that I do to calm my stomach but I order ginger ale (no ice) every time I take a flight. No real carbonation factor to add to the pressure.
And on long flights, the Gameboy armed with Tetris is always a must! :D
Hawaii is an absolutely beautiful place to go and, if memory serves me correctly, you should get leis when you get off the plane. But don't hold me to that. I hope you enjoy your trip.

I went on a plane on at least two different occasions to meet an online friend after the 9-11 thing. (Before then, I hadn't been on a plane since I was a baby.) The worst thing: airport security. They keep us safe, but are a hinderance to a gal like me who uses metal as a fashion accessory. :p
The take-off can make you a bit queasy and hurt your ears sometimes, but looking out at the world below can be relaxing. And you get to see the ocean... and go to Hawaii. That sounds too cool. Don't sweat it. ;)

You'll be fine! I went to Hawaii this past summer. And honestly it had been my first time flying, and I was 18! I have flown, but I was only an infant, so an all honesty, I had never consciously flown :p So I was nervous and excited and everything else in between. But I've always loved the aspect of flying, and it was a blast for me. Just relax and enjoy it. Make sure to keep yourself occupied, either in sleeping or otherwise. I brought a journal along which I wrote in some of time, three books and my GameBoy Advance. They were my key to sanity. They kept me entertained the whole way through. Heck, might be fun to even bringa sketch pad and magazines along.

Just hope that someone knocks you out like the A-Team had to do to B.A. everytime they flew

Well the only advice I can give you is pretty practical. If you're leaving from a very bussy airport, you'll definately want to be there at least 2 hours before your flight leaves. And I think that the airport in Hawaii will be bussy, so the same thing goes for when you come back. Other than that fllying isn't anything special. Make sure you bring something to chew to make your ears pop, and something to keep you bussy. Oh, and don't forget to have fun!!

I am afraid of heights and I flew for the first time in '98. It was great! :D I really wished I had had a window seat! The view above the clouds was amazing from what I could see. (I shoulda asked the guy beside me to switch seats, cuz he seemed like the type that flies a lot and he didn't even look up from his book or whatever for the whole trip.)
One thing I did was listen to the radio. I was even laughing out loud at a station that was playing part of a Steven Wright concert. :)
The whole trip was smooth and reminded me of travelling on a bus.
