View Full Version : Since when was Brak's mom British?

I watched the Brak show tonight and I was surprised to notice that Brak's mom sounded British. I could have sworn she didn't always sound like that...

I put this in the review thread, but, meh, ust moving it...
"Isn't The Brak Show supposed to be a sitcom "parody"? This is fits right in. Darren Stevens, Vivian Banks, Becky Conners, etc. You know, same character, different actor. Maybe I'm just too much of a sitcom geek enjoying the joke too much."

Ya know, that's actually a good explanation. The only problem is that they didn't let the audience in on the joke. I mean sure, maybe it's on purpose but it seems more likely that the original voice was just busy or perhaps didn't want the job.

The voice of Brak's Mom has been permanently changed.
It's not a one time gimmick.
That's all.

Oh well. Will the original voice return?

Wait, something doesn't add up.
I'm looking at the December schedule, and apparently, the Brak show is airing out of order. Last weeks episode was apparently made after this weeks episode, yet it featured the old voice. Does anyone have any info on why it's like that, and if the voice change had anything to do with the fact that it's airing out of order?

The shows don't necessarily air in the order they are produced. "The Feud" was produced before "Brakstreet", but they are programmed by The Network as seen fit. Incidentally, "Brakstreet" contained only one Mom line, a scream, and as reflected in the credits, it was the voice of Joanna Daniel, not Marsha Crenshaw.

And now, the kicker.
WHY did the voice change? And, is it actually INTENDED to be the complete opposite of the old voice?

The producers of The Brak Show made a decision to change the voice of Brak's Mom. Joanna Daniel was chosen for the role. This will not change any time soon.
I suggest that you watch the new shows over and over and over, and eventually you will come to accept, appreciate, and perhaps even love the new voice.
In the meantime, you can enjoy Marsha Crenshaw's work in the 13 episodes containing her vocal stylings.

I figured it was a parody of when they replace an actor and the new actor looks or sounds absolutely nothing like the person they replaced, but now that i know this is not justa temporary thing I'm pissed.
What made the producers make such a weird decision for what
seems like no good reason.

I thought I was hearing things when she spoke last night. don't care for the change at all, but I can deal with it. The writers should have the family make fun of her new voice, at least zorak.

"Pissed"? Really? Wow. You're taking it too hard.
I promise you there was a good reason for the producers to make the change, but I also promise you that you'll likely never know it. So why not just enjoy the smooth, British warblings of one Joanna Daniel? Most people on this little message board spew so much venom towards Brak and his family that I'm surprised that the new voice even made a blip on the radar screen. Something else to hate, I guess.

Well, judging by what Mobab said, it seems that there was some reason why they didn't think Marsha Crenshaw should continue to do the voice. It's probably not a decision they made on a whim. They probably have a good reason for it, but it's their business, and we'll likely never hear exactly what that reason was.
Now that I know it's permanent, I think it'll be a bit easier to adjust to. It'll be weird at first, though. I hope they make some reference to it in a later show. Just a sublte comment about it would be really great for those who watch every week. Sort of like what Home Movies did with the "You have a sister?" line that was unfortunately cut from the show.

I think it's just going to take some getting used to, since the voice is so dramatically different. It was hard for me to enjoy the voice last night because I couldn't get into the show--I just kept thinking about the voice, which made me think about voice actors being recorded in a studio, so it seemed unnatural.
For the record, I didn't think Marsha Crenshaw was bad, but I could definitely see why they would want to change the character in some way--the Mom character wasn't really adding very much to the humor of the show.

11-11-2002, 07:17 PM
Also, I agree that it would be funny if they did an inside joke for fans of the show about the voice change--just a brief comment from Zorak or something, like in SGC2C when Space Ghost says "You're a mantis? I've been calling you a locust all this time!"
A question for MobabVanHoffman, since you seem to, um, know a lot about the show: did the producers specifically want Brak's mom to have a british accent and looked for voice actresses with British accents, or did they just look for a replacement and Joanna Daniel seemed to fit the role well?

Not really pissed but just angered. I love the show. It's one of my favorites on the block. It's going to frustarte me like it did when the Vivian Banks character got changed on the Fresh Prince. I kept going "Why Don't They just bring back the old lady !" ..But I can't do nuttin' bout this so I may as well jsut take your advice.

I think it's a bit of a joke, in a way. For whatever reason they had to get this other actress, and I guess they're not even going to bother trying to make the change seem natural. But continuity was never important in this show -- after all, Brak's Dad is apparently dead now... And Brak's Mom never has any really funny lines anyway, so I don't think it'll affect much. With the kind of role she has, it's no big deal.

It could've been worse. If they changed Dad, there's no way I'd watch the show again.

"Mom's" character always had a good voice because she was the 'normal' one in the family. The one who always created order out of chaos. She was funny because she was NORMAL. Now she's just another parody....another face in the background.

I hear it was unintentional. Ms. Daniel was sent to the auditions accidentally, and the producers liked her UK flair.
Also, I wouldn't expect a joke about the voice change to appear in the show.

Is this because there was some tension that caused the change? Is the change somewhat of a "sensitive topic" for those in charge? I know you probably can't say much here, but any information you can give would be appreciated.

But we do it because we care! seriously though, that may be the truth, because it's the one's who are never happy except when they spew venom... if I was full of venom right now, you better believe I'd be spewing it! No way I'm letting that stuff do it's dirty work on me!
Best way I see it with this backlash is that any time when actors are replaced, it reminds us fanboys that there's a real world, and we and our sick obsessions are nowhere near it, so it's painful when your escapist passtimes make it harder to escape, right?

I can see where it's a neat gimick, since Dad has an odd accent, now Mom has one, too.
Still, I found it to be very, very, VERY distracting, 'cause I spent most of the show thinking "she sounds wimpy, much less June Cleaver-ish," and it was jarring. I'm sure I'll get used to it in time, because nothing can stop me from watching Zorak and Brak, but still, I miss Marsha Crenshaw, 'cause I think her version was more assertive, yet still more sitcom-mom-ish.
I, too, wonder whether the new voice was chosen to be British, or whether the voice they liked just happened to be British.

You didn't miss Rejected, it didn't air. Basically, Kellner pulled it a couple of days before it was supposed to air. If you want more info on it, look through the last couple of week's threads.

Is not so bad! (not so bad!?! you fail everything except ANIMATION!... sorry, brain fart) I agree it was distracting, but to me it wasn't in a bad way! It made me wonder what was going on, like does mother have some sort of new powers? did she get caught in a temporal rift which forced her to live in england for 50 years before getting thrown back to 'our' time? are the writers just ****'ng with us? I know that when something like this happens in a show, there IS no inherent back-story to go along with a change that was really just about the regular operations of a production studio, but it always makes my mind spin off onto random tangents. Anyway, why not create your own back story for the change? Looks like we'll never get closure on it in the show!

It's going to frustarte me like it did when the Vivian Banks character got changed on the Fresh Prince.
Hah, I was telling my friend about the replacement of Marsha Crenshaw and how different it was (to say the least), and I used THAT as an example. How funny. Actually, I liked the way they introduced the new Vivian Banks-- with the birth of her new baby and saying something about "feeling like a new woman."
I pissed and moaned about Braks' Mom's change, but I figured it would be permanent, and it would be something I'd need to get used to. Which by the second episode, I pretty much have.

How can the charm of the wavy bob-sporting, gloves-n-apron wearing Brak's Mom be replaced with.... British-ness?
Besides, Brak's Dad already as an accent thing going and Brak has his own unique.... uh, voice, did they really need to screw around with it?

M.Crenshaw's voice was a very soothing, motherly voice, which is why I miss it. I just don't get the same feel out of J.Daniel's (not the alcohol) voice. Not that I don't like the new voice, but it takes something (a very small something) away from my viewing experience the few episodes I've seen after the change.
I've read that some people feel the old voice didn't add to the show, which I disagree with. Her voice added a subtle humor now and again. For instance, when she threatens Zorak in Doll Talkers (I think that's the episode). That's just not something you'de expect to hear from someone like that, which was great.
I'm kinda worried that the new voice will begin to clash with the other, high-contrast voices on the show. With Crenshaw gone there aren't any "normal" voices (by normal I mean non-accented, so if you have an accent, don't take offense). Only time will tell, I guess.

Since this is animation, I think when they changed the Mom voice, they changed the Mom character. I mean, imagine Brak with a constantly deep voice. He would still be Brak, but not the Brak we all know and love. Plus, I agree that Marsha Crenshaw has a very good "motherly" voice, while the new Mom really doesn't.
However, Brak has been fairly constantly good this season, so I can't really complain.
