View Full Version : (On Topic)*sigh* 3 South on MTV - Can someone explain this?

Just finished looking at this show called 3 South on MTV, a silly show about a bunch of slackers going to college. It really had this twisted Mission Hill vibe about it and would be a natural fit for Adult Swim's comedy lineup.

Here's the kicker.

3 South is an MTV-financed project produced and directed by Warner Bros. Animation, who is owned by AOL Time Warner, Turner Broadcasting's owner (who in turn owns Cartoon Network).

Here's where my rant begins. Why isn't there any synergy in the ATW units? What the ****'s the point of having a multibillion dollar empire if you can't even work within each other to create projects? And if WBA's free enough to create something for a competitor, why couldn't they create something for something in their own backyard, namely Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block. Or has the network reached the point that they actually have to beg for outside acquisitions to keep the block strong?

It's a bad precedent. Maybe I'm a little too negative for my own good. What do you think?

I'm just saying I want the production company behind the animation, a small indy company called Warner Bros. Animation (I think you've heard of them), to do something for Adult Swim without any hesitation. A new production, not just repeats of their previous productions, like Baby Blues.

The reason why I complained about it here on the Adult Swim board is in the paragraph in my first post that starts off "Here's where my rant begins . . . "

It's not bad but it's not great. Part of the problem is that the writers (who are from Family Guy) took out some of the funnier jokes, because they felt they were too Family Guy-ish and didn't want to get branded, such as cutaways (there were more cutaways than just the "pants boy" one).

The animation and direction seemed all over the place. Sometimes it was okay, sometimes it looked really messed up. This was probably due to the awkward storyboarding.. some storyboarders were better than others.

I hear it gets better in later episodes.

Well, WBA is already working on Justice League, Duck Dodgers, Baby Looney Tunes, and Teen Titans for Cartoon Network. I bet AOLTW thinks that's plenty.

And if WBA's free enough to create something for a competitor, why couldn't they create something for something in their own backyard, namely Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block. Or has the network reached the point that they actually have to beg for outside acquisitions to keep the block strong?

Cartoon Network doesn't need WBA's help. They can do their shows in Cartoon Network Studios if they want to go traditional. In fact, Harvey Birdman IS produced at Cartoon Network Studios and Rough Draft.

Plus, CN has been saving up money to support shows like Futurama. So don't be too pessmistic. Just be patient.
