I was watching TV with my dad teh other day, and we changed the channel and Whose Line Is It Anyway was on. So we watched it, and I came up with an idea, what if there was an animated version of it. Because the show is so popular now, imagine if an animated version aired on Adult Swim. Let me know what you think.

Your familiar with the entire concept of the show right?

well we would have some tired animators if they did the show live... :p :p :p

Yeah I don't mean to sound mean or anything...but...
were you DROPPED as a child? That isn't exactly the kind of show that translates well to animation. Sorry.

That's a great idea!
While they're at it, they should also make an animated Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, and Survivor!

*sobbing* Thanks a lot guys, I guess this is a bad idea, so if you want to, close this thread. I was just trying to come up with a good idea, a when I finally get one, you guys are all mean to me. Can't we all just get along? I mean, if you don't think it's a good idea, vote no on the poll and simply say it's not a good idea. You don't have to be mean to me. If I don't like one of your ideas, I just vote no and say why, I'm not mean to the thread poster.

They could animate it like they animated the movie "Waking Life," but that movie took a LOT of time.
Don't worry, I'm not going to make comments about you or anything. :) I like the show a lot.

That sounds... bizarre. Aren't the performers animated enough? And wouldn't animation require some amount of scripting, which is contrary to the whole improv idea?

Thanks spectre, well my idea for an animated version of whose line would be to use an animated version of everyone on the show and have the writers sit down and say the first thing that comes to mind, and they would use that on the episode. So you see, they could have a ton of episodes becuase the writers could come up with a half hours worth dialouge in a half hour.

I see, it sounds more like an animated "Seinfeld" than a strictly improv show. I can dig that. Closest thing I think we have right now is Home Movies, their official website had something where the two writers sat for hours before coming up with one word, and then it became an episode :p .
Later.

the old "donkey kong" 3d series was animated using motion capture puppetry.....if you used live actors with motion capture with a real time rendering engine like the kind they use in video games, it could be done easily....so i think its a great idea...

Everything takes work, but if it pays off in the end, then it's worth it.

I was emplying that it takes more work than is actually worth it. In this case making an animated 'Whose line is it anyways?'. Also, please say you mean the British version of 'Whose Line Is It Anways?' and not Drew Carey's.

I think it'd be funny to have the Whose Line guys improvise old HB cartoons in an Adult Swim fashion, only completely improvising it. If they did that, I'd definately watch.

I was originally leaning towards Drew Carey's becuase of a funny line I heard on last night's episode. Drew Carey-Would you like to see my penis?, other guy-Would you like to see a picture of Drew Carey's penis? Anyway, I could go either way.

CN did have one live cartoon character, Moxy, who was voiced by Bobcat Goldthwait. While his appearances on his own show were taped, he hosted one of CN's Toon-Ins as the first live cartoon. Computer-animated, of course.
Still, it would probably be a lot better to just have the voices be improvised.

If they did the rendering thing that would be a decent idea.
But.. it is way more work than it is worth.
I think this is an unrealistic idea, which if happened would be good but never will
so i classify this as Bad.

Those 5 are animated enough as it is. You don't need to give them any ideas! :p

this is not as much work as you guys think.....
i see it every year at siggraph.....which is this weeklong convention where all us computer animation people go to see new technology and learn new stuff.....imagine the grafix on any next-gen console like the x-box, playstation, or gamecube (not the cut scenes; the actual gameplay) and this is what the show could look like......its just a matter of making the models and textures and hooking a comedian up to the appropriate mo-cap rig......its already been done, except without the improv, which actually has alot of potential...would be cool *IF* done right....

I think that a decent part of the problem would just be limitations in movement. Hooked up to something like that would make some limitations on how far you can walk in certain directions (such as into the background or back out of it) or jump around or whatever. Picking up objects, slapping around another character, or something like that would also present problems. Of course, limited movement was never a problem for Space Ghost, so it could work if you weren't looking for much more than a cartoon that could talk and show a little movement.

The whole fun of making it animated, would be allowing the sketches every bit of leeway. While they could record the sound from a live "Who's line" and animate it later, allowing the animators as much creativity as the actors, it would be tough to capture the spontinaity.

the limitations are directly related to the rig and the creativity of the people involved.....as well as budget constraints......and i guess it also depends on which aspect you want to highlight most.....the fact that animation is involved, or the fact that it is improvised

I would have voted this "Worst idea ever" but I didn't see that choice so I guess a simple no will have to suffice
