Well I've heard many things about the movie, most of them good. So I've been really eager to see it. So when I heard it was coming to AS I was really excited. However I just recently learned it was a Gundam movie, and I really don't like Gundam. Well, I liked Endless Waltz, but I could barely follow the story because I don't know the story or the characters. Is that the case with Char's? Do I need to watch the millions of Gundam episodes before the 28th to understand the movie?

Afraid so. According to the sources of Toonzone members, you're gonna need to watch the whole Mobile Suit Gundam series all the way to episode 41 to figure out what the hell is going on. And, hopefully, if you've been catching Adult Swim's run of Mobile Suit Gundam (which airs right after Gundam 0083 and before Outlaw Star), then you won't be missing much.

One question though. If you don't like Gundam, why are you so eager to see it?

No, you only need to know about what happens in Mobile Suit Gundam. (Currently showing on AS)

or if you want the basics.. Char hates Ammuro, Ammuro hates Char.

because Ammuro and Char liked the same woman, Ammuro killed her while trying to kill char..

A good shortcut is to buy the Mobile Suit Gundam movie trilogy, which is 3 discs. It basically takes 42 episodes and smashes them into 18 episodes worth of footage by only using scenes vital to the story. Plus they're all uncut in Japanese with subtitles in English.

I saw it a few months ago at the Big Apple Anime Fest and I was lost for almost half the movie not knowing what happened in the last 15 eps. of MSG. The movie makes a lot more sense after seeing the whole series.

Don't get too excited. If you don't like Gundam, then you probably won't like Char's Counterattack. And, as already stated, you do need to see the original series (42 episodes in all) to understand what's going on.

I have a question too...i know basically what happens in Gundam, but i have never seen the first series besides a little of what is shown on Adult Swim. However i picked up the three MSG movies a long time ago. Are those sufficent in understanding what happens in chars counterattack?

Yeah, those are fine. They cut out a lot of stuff, but the main storyline is completely intact (outside of the Battle of Odessa, which they completely cut out, all 10 minutes of it :p), including everything you need to know to watch CC.

Yep, yep, you need to watch all (or most) of Mobile Suit Gundam to get Char's Counterattack. Some people say Zeta Gundam too, but I think they're wrong about that.

Which is good considering the dub for the Gundam Movie Trilogy was god-awful (David Lucas was an okay Char, though)

To understand all of the continuity you would need to watch MSG, Zeta Gundam AND double-zeta....

Don't bother. If you've already seen what's been on adult swim, go pick up the last two movies of the movie trilogy and you should be ok. There will be a little stuff involving the titans and Neo Zeon you might not know, but you don't really need to so long as you understand what happened to Lala, and the climax of MSG.

Zeta Gundam wouldn't hurt, but I doubt ya really have time, nor is it actually necessary to see it.

When was there a dub? I thought Sunrise, Inc.'s license prevented that. Same for a subtitled release of MSG.

So, is Cartoon Network planning to air "Char's Counterattack" on the final Saturday Night that 'Adult Swim Action' will exist?
And what's going to happen with the "Gundam" series and "Outlaw Star" after the Saturday Night "Adult Swim Action" block is gone? I know new eps of "Yu Yu Hakusho" will still air Saturday Nights, while "Inu-Yasha" (hopefully with the original openings reinstated!) and "Cowboy Bebop" are switching over to Weeknights. So what about the two "Gundam" series and "Outlaw Star"? Are they going to disappear from the airwaves?  :bosko:

Did I miss something? YYH is going to air on Saturday nights after the AS weekday move?

Nope, I dunno where Waggytoon got that from. We still don't know what's happening with YYH.

I'm not sure what'll happen to the other shows.

There was a dub released on VHS a long time ago here in the states. It was the first Gundam property actually released here; I think (not counting the novels). Although I haven't seen it my self, I hear the dub was pretty awful. Mobile Suits are referred to as "robots," and a lot of Star Trek techno-jargon gets thrown in, as well.

They also pronounce Gundam "Gun-damn". My friend owns it. He regrets it, too.

That's enough reason to kill those people. ;)

They do it for Wing in the CNX promos too. It sounds hillarious. Gun DAMN Wing! They also say Cowboy Be Bop, as if Bebop was two words.

All the mispronounciations were only on the first movie. The second and third movies weren't THAT bad.

Its excrusiating :p All the mispronounced words, like 'Gun-damn', 'Hayaaaaato', and 'Hamone'. The script is horrific, with words like 'spacetron invaders' and such, and ruining scene after scene, not to mention totally destroying characters like Ramba Ral, who doesn't come off as the honorable veteran he actually is with all the goofy and innaccurate lines they give him. And the voices them selves... *pukes* Sayla with that ridiculous accent, Amuro, Hayato, Slegger, Cameron, etc... Even though D. Lucas was Char, he doesn't fit Char at all, making it a total waste of his talent, they could have used him for someone else :( There are a few select good voices in there, like Lia Sargent as Lalah, but the vast, vast majority are horrid. Its rather obvious why Sunrise didn't let it be released on DVD...

So thats why Bandai never used animaze for the series

I had heard that they released the Gundam trilogy using Animaze but the series was done by Ocean.
