View Full Version : Madison's Halloween Was a Riot... Literally!

About 65,000 people stormed our city's state street and around 2:30am when I was just zonked out in my apartment two women decided to stop flashing the passerbyers.
Passerbyers went berserk, South Park style and the mayhem spread up the street.
There's talk of bloody heads, broken ankles, trampled people and a little looting.
I mean the placed that got sacked were the nice places on State Street. A certain liquor store that always has these funny signs out front making fun of underage drinkers and other people who deserve it got sacked as well as a mom and pop electronics shop. Strangely in our liberal town, the most protested shop on the street, the Gap, survived unscathed.
I can't help to say that I'm sorry I missed it. This will be the last great Madison Halloween(it's like our personal Mardi Gras!) for some time to come.
:(
Great as in sheer size and wildness... not the riot it evolved into.

I'm assuming this is Madison, Wisconsin?
Wow. Stupid people at it again. Can't say that I'm upset I missed it.

Yup.
Madison, WI.
Our Halloweens are pretty famed and notorious. Once upon a time in my early college career there was another street party that was famed. The Mifflin Street Block Party that stretched for several blocks.
Every house on the street had a party at it. Live bands at ever fourth house. And just all around hippy wannabe fun.
Until 1996 where yet another riot broke out.
I was there for that one and walking through it, but somehow didn't see it.
Down the street the sky was orange and yellow. Appaherently a bon fire had be lit in the mild of the street. I thought, "Silly kids..." then it went quick to blue and grey and I heard screaming. This made me raise and eyebrow, but... whatever. I asked a guy speedily riding away on a bike what happened and he said people were getting hosed down. I figured he was just exaggerating. I walked on through the smoke and shadows and saw cops in riot gear.
"Must be a precautionary measure..." I thought. With a smile on my mug from having just kissed I girl I went and got a burrito with some friends.
That riot killed an annual good time that I hear is slowly coming back. And now this latest one could have quite possilby killed a legendary Madison event for a couple years to come.
I can't help but wish I'd been there to see history happen.
Idiots...

Idiots indeed. You know this made national news as well....a friend sent me a link from CNN.

I have no doubts that things will drastically change next year as well. They have to be more careful from now on.
I too can say I'm glad I missed it. I've gone for 2 or 3 of these Halloween things and I can say, pretty honestly, for me anyways, they're not that much fun. Unless you're wasted beyond sense in which case anything would be fun.

Interesting.
Not exactly the kind of "party" I would wish to attend, but certainly knowledgeable to watch. :D

Ah, the wonders of alcoholic consumption. Yes, it leads to good times, doesn't it?
And one little thing, notoriety and fame are not complementary. They contradict each other.

Notoriety and fame go hand and hand when it's like say..... The Notorious B.I.G.... when he was still with us.
Madison Halloweens were like that.

Well, I don't know him personally, but I've seen him around campus anyway.
