View Full Version : CCF Big Pick Weekend - Who are you voting for?

From the few pilots that I've seen, I loved Captain Sturdy the best. Hopefully, I'll be able to catch all the cartoons this weekend before voting. So, that brings up the question, what short are you voting for?

WBArchivist

I voted Swaroop - not only was it my favorite short but if it is chosen it could revive WB Animation! I have a link to a clip somewhere, does anyone want it?

I only saw four of the pilots - the losers just end up on the Whatacartoon show.

I voting for Swaroop, I'm sure that WBA will rise again, I love Histeria! and Detention, but to make the people who critisize these shows very happy, they failed, but THEY STILL RULES!!!!

Forgive me Bougious Buffoon and other H! fans.:(

I hope that Swaroop will succeed.

Histeria! would have been popular if those critics stop talking trash about it.

Preach it, G.I. D'oh! No need to forgive-H! WILL rise again! Don't worry about critics-they trash everything good.
To stay on-topic, cannot say I can see these shorts. All I hope is that whatever gets picked will be of a good quality...

i'm voting for 'a kitty bobo show'. it's one of the most original new shorts from cartoon network, and it looks great. dan krall's backgrounds are just so beautiful and clay morrow's music is perfect. did you see the film for the end credits? very original! it's very sit-com like and funny. captain sturdy and imp, inc. are also very good! looking forward to see who the winner will be.

A lot of stuff here, & some of it isn't even on topic.
I really haven't seen any of the new CToons except Ferret & Parrot & My Crazy Family ( I think; is that the one with the East Indian family?). I'll try to see them this weekend, tho not tonight @ 7 as that's when that thing comes on TVLand; I'm curious to see what it's about. It's kind of prime-time Sesame Street without the academic stuff, & when it last aired I was one. Anyway, right now I'm thinking Swaroop 'cause of that WBA thing. Oh, this Big Pick thing got notice in yesterday's DemoZette TV column (Hatter can confirm this). I quote: "Yee Hah & Doo Dah? Somewhere out there, Mel Blanc is turning over in his grave." But did anyone else notice this? Last year's Big Pick contest was won by Billy & Mandy, which will debut tonight as the Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, but did you notice one of the other candidates got its own series first? Sheep In the Big City. My take: the powers that be had already decided that Sheep was gonna get its own series & winning the Big Pick was just a formality / coronation; when Billy & Mandy won, they had to scramble. Anyone have any idea what this year's anointed one is? I'll be interested to see Captain Sturdy & Major Flake as well as Swaroop; for that matter, I'll be interested to see all of them.

Oh, & G.I. D'oh!? e-mail Varakorn Ungvichian ungvichian@thaimail.com to find out where his Detention page is. I'd tell you myself, but I hadn't added it to the favorites list on this computer when the one @ home conked out. Sorry.

So what shows are you guys going for.

I'm all for Kitty Ba Ba, and Imps Inc.

However captian Sturdy is the one that truely made me LOL. It was great with all the little refrences to our PC society, and even the CN sattelite being blown away.

The others where not as good IMO.

K so where do you guys stand.

Utica Cartoon. It was pretty funny, and really had a different sense of humor than the others. IMO, it was something that really isn't matched by anything from any other cartoons, in terms of both style and humor. It's very different from anything else on any of the Premieres or regular Cartoon Cartoons, and in a good way.

For those who are kind of thrown by the title...This was the one in which the bear was trying to be perpetual Hot Dog Eating Champion.

"Kitty Bobo" (with all this talk recently about banning cell phones in cars, this one was socially relevant), "Captain Sturdy", and "Utica Cartoon" (isn't that a town in New York?) "Swaroop" seemd to be a pretty one-note joke--Indian family having trouble adapting to American culture, and every one of them sounds like Apu from The Simpsons--all we need is a corner convenience store, folks. If that's WBA's salvation, I'm sorry to say, maybe it's better off d***ed.
Though I'll admit that hearing Maurice LaMarche voice God was amusing...nice to see one of his characters has achieved a position of power, even if...well...a certain someone else has yet to...ahem.

That'll teach you to use sunblock everywhere, then, won't it?

I agree with you Dr. B (ooo, a rhyme) about "Swaroop." I didn't find it very much amusing and I can't see that as a regular series. My vote goes to "Captain Sturdy."

My favorite would have to be Captain Sturdy... interesting animation style, great pacing, snappy dialogue.

Imp Inc. was pretty interesting, and I liked Kitty Bobo even though it'll probably be too droll and urbane for most viewers.

Swaroop was okay, but I can't see them doing a series out of it. Also, I've got a feeling Warner Brothers animation wouldn't be making it if it got picked up, since Cartoon Network produces every other Cartoon Cartoon. They probably just pitched in to get it made, as I've noticed every other pilot was seemingly made by a different company. Even if Swaroop does get the nod, I don't think it'll get WBA out of mothballs.

So what did everyone think of Grim and Evil? It's not nearly as annoying as "Sheep," but it was mildly irksome nonetheless.

Captain Sturdy was great. I really hope it does become a Cartoon Cartoon. I thought Grim & Evil was ok. They reaired the pilot that won last year in the show itself.

Sorry Mike Milo is you're reading this, but I just couldn't see Swaroop as a show. Hatter, you may be right about CN Studios doing new episodes of Swaroop if it were picked up, but I doubt it because, I doubt Milo would email Archie and say to vote on it to help it. Milo works for WBA, so if it won, I would think WBA would continue doing it.

One more thing, WBA isn't dead. We have Justice League coming up, as well as, the new Batman direct to videos, Scooby videos and Tom & Jerry videos. From my understanding, the new president of WBA (appointed a few months back) wants to revive franchise characters and will continue to use them. I could see Cartoon Network Studios becoming AOLTW's only animation company, but I think that is unlikely to happen.

Captain Sturdy won my vote. That cartoon was hillarious and had a strange effect on me.

Kitty Bobo was pretty stupid. It had it's moments.

Yee Hah and Doo Dah was unfunny and painful to watch.

My Freaky Family was pretty funny.

The Kids Next Door was completely lame! It was obviously made by the same people who made that one cartoon cartoon about the Chimpy and that other guy. That was hillarious. I was completely looking forward to the Kids Next Door. Unfortunately is was CRAP CRAP CRAP!!!

Ferret and Parrot was a shocker. I thought it was going to be completely stupid. It was hillarious. Not because of the ants or the guy or the ferret: That parrot! He was the funniest thing! He would just make noises and repeat things. Me and my sister enjoyed that one.

Imp INC. Had a unique story. It's just too bad only one of these will be a new cartoon. I would have loved to see the imps in a series.

Major Flake was just retarded.

Utica Cartoon was great. Again, It's just too bad only one of these will be a cartoon cartoon.

Swaroop seemed almost racist. It was kinda funny though. I liked when the cow was talking..

Well, those are my two cents. If you haven't voted yet, please vote for Captian Sturdy. There is just something about that cartoon that gives me goosebumps.

I would vote for "Uncensored Cartoons," a hour-long block devoted to the completely unedited, uncompressesed showing of classic cartoons.

But, that's not an option. So, Capt. Sturdy gets the vote thanks in large part to its lampooning of CN's very own PC cops. Ha! HA! Capt. Sturdy is also good old clean satire.

LD, I thought Ferret and Parrot was going to suck too. It was actually pretty good. It made me want to actually see more (which good pilots should do). Imp Inc. was ok and I liked it alot better than most of the other shows.

I really want Captain Sturdy to win, but if it doesn't, I would like to see Imp Inc. or Ferret and Parrot to become series then. I really, reeeeally hope that neither Kids Next Door or My Freaky Family win. They both were horrible. Swaroop wasn't much better either.

I hope they'll at least consider doing something with the good ones that don't win. I mean, during the last year, they've come out with Sheep and Time Squad, as well as the pick from last year, Grim and Evil. It's not like they really only have room for one more of these. And they are going to have to consider making more new ones, because some of the older CC's are getting repeated to death. Dexter is great, but it can't continue to be on as often as it is, it's just going through the same repeats too quickly.

Even if your fave doesn't win, remember that PPG was it circulation on What A Cartoon for a long time, and the positive reaction (letters, calls, etc) to that eventually led to a series. Hopefully, the better series will follow the same route, although a bit more quickly. I guess what I'm saying is, if your fave doesn't win, complain to them about it and maybe it'll work out.

Did any other series do something like this? I remember that there were Dexter and Johnny pilots during the World Premiere Toons thing years back, were both of those picked up at that time, or was it just one of them?

Dexter is coming back with new episodes this November. But I agree, it is being repeated to death. It's funny though how after it went out of production and started airing daily, it picked up alot of steam and the ratings were good enough to bring about new episodes, which happened to Rugrats (and look where it is now!). Dexter was picked up in 1996, whereas, Johnny Bravo was picked up a season later.

PPG are being repeated daily alot too. New episodes won't appear until most likely 2002 (although a Justice Friends episode of PPG may appear around the premiere of Justice League, but this has not yet been confirmed).

I also heard that Cow & Chicken may go back in production for new episodes, but I have yet to hear this confirmed.

I like the idea of some of losers becoming shows anyways, but that most likely will not happen.

I'm also hoping that the Cartoon Cartoons Show (formerly The What A Cartoon Show! and various pilots) goes into production again. I liked Nickelodeon's Oh Yeah! Cartoons, which was a spinoff of TWACS!, even though it aired on another network.

I don't know. I mean, one of my sisters voted for My Freaky Family and she also liked Kids Next Door. KND seemed like it wanted to be too much. A Disney One saturday Morning w/ action, cliches.. Joe Tully

Yeah, it was supposed to be a parody of Japanese shows like Power Rangers. The main problem was they forgot that a parody requires COMEDY!! COMEDY YOU FOOLS!!!

Vince, if it makes your brother feel better, tell him that I started to cry when I saw that Utica lost too.:)

KND is just another cartoon in the mold of kids cartoons, Doug, Pepper Ann, etc. I have no idea what they are going to do with the series, they can't possibly do what they did for the pilot each episode. At least, I hope not. Either way, I probably won't be watching, other than maybe a couple of episodes to confirm my suspicions that it will completely suck.

Doug was good. Gave us some thought, and once Brand-S.N. Doug came, it gave a coupla messages to kids on what may happen on certain issues like anorexia. I respect it for that. Only when we finally saw the NemaToade did I start to lose faith in it...

I saw a cartoon called "Lucky Lydia" which I liked. Very good animation.

Ugh.

I thought there were worse shows out there... like Captain Flake, or My Freaky Family, which was particularly annoying. (It came in third?) Now THOSE shows were annoying.

But still... KND didn't really seem that inspired, and Dexter did the kid genius angle much better. It was on the bottom tier for me.

Hmmm... hopefully CN can do what they did with Sheep and just decide to make one into a series anyway.

This "Kids Next Door" Cartoon may set record for cornball schlock on Cartoon Cartoons. The "KND" is really a "spoof" of SPECTRE in the James Bond movies (and a CORNY spoof), with "kids" called "Number 1," "Number 2," etc.

Another cornball spoof are the lifeguard guys. They reek of "Diamonds Are Forever's" Wink and Kidd (SP?), the guys that were supposed to kill Bond. Except their dialog is even cornier than in the Movie.

EXTREME CORNBALL CARTOON ALERT!

The big, high tech look to this one pushes the border of schlock cornball Terry-toonery scooby doo daffy/speedy groovy ghouly EVIL. Avoid this turkey at all costs!

For anyone interested, I found the Utica Cartoon website

www.uticacartoon.com

You can download the cartoon in segments, see stuff on how they developed it, they have some really odd games there, etc.

I really wish these guys luck, they did a great job. Unfortunately, I guess kids prefer seeing the same garbage repeated over and over, and like the other stuff we were rooting for, the material for Utica must've just been too intelligent for the kids, who were looking for something simpler.

I wonder if CN will release a vote tally. I'd like to see if any of the decent ones were at least close.

That Kids Next Door cartoon reminded me a bit of Dexter, too. I voted for "Captain Sturdy"... definitely the funniest of the batch this year. I also enjoyed "Imp Inc.". I actually thought "Major Flake" had its moments... but I don't think it would have worked as a series.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who considered those two lifeguards' close friendship a bit...well...suspect. Was it my imagination or did one of them have flippers?
It was the treehouse angle that bothered me. As in my own stories the heroes use one as a base, I consider this a plagiarism lawsuit waiting to happen. I prayed this piece of manure would never become a series, but it seems that didn't work. This'll be one of those shows I actively fight not to watch, along with KWB's Nightmare Room. Even my great and mighty tolerance has a limit!

Well, hopefully the creator of the series throws the pilot out the window and starts from scratch, but I doubt that will happen. I already posted something to the creator of KND at alt.tv.cartoon-network and I'm hoping he'll reply. KND sucked, plain and simple.

Say no to School? Stay in Drugs? Nuh uh. I only take Medication Drugs. And I have to go to School. Heh. I guess I should really make a "Welcome me" Topic.
