View Full Version : Post-Count Threads

Hey all - I just thought I'd drop by and express a concern I had.

There are a lot of "post count" threads popping up on the boards these days. Now, we don't have a rule that outlaws such posts, but they're becoming a little too prevalent lately.

I'm not singling anyone out saying that they're doing anything wrong - heck, I did a 2222nd post thread myself a week or two ago - but there are just too many these days. I'm not going to delete or close any of the ones that are presently on the boards, but I hope this will dissuade people from doing so in the future.

Milestone posts are fun to do, but the milestones should be a little bigger - like, say, every 1000 or so. Sound cool?

Best regards to all you Cafe people, you. :)

-Tim

Yeah, it's fun to turn over the odometer, ain't it?

But a thread announcing it is kind of discouraged around here. In the past we've gotten floods of such threads, and it has made posters (not just mods, I swear!) really tired and grumpy. So it's a good idea to contain that enthusiasm for really big numbers. (Anyone check out Jim Harvey's 10K+ post count?)

I haven't made any post count threads yet because I don't post very much.

I want to first say that I am in no way trying to start a flame war. I want to point something out tho.

That statement, ccffan01, is why there are so many on this board that despise Post-Count Threads. A high post-count does not make one superior, nor does having a lower count make one inferior. The quality of a person's posts is what is the true test. A person just posting to get a huge volume of posts is generally not going to be well-liked. Meaningless posts (which frankly I think that was) are looked down upon and really just clutter the board up.

Again, I'm not trying to start a flame war. I'm just stating the opinion, that I am sure isn't solely my opinion, that things like this are what make Post-Count Threads annoying. Milestones are great to celebrate, if their is worth behind the thread. I personally think 10 good, quality posts, beats 1000 meaningless, fluff posts. And no one poster is superior to another -- we're all equal here. We're here for the same reason, afterall.

Edit: PS -- lmao at your siggy there, Timmy. :D

Urm... I think he was joking Bleu. At least, I hope he was joking...

EDIT: Ironically, this is my 1900th post. Oy.

I think Bleu knew that, but I beleive she was using it as an example for the fact that other posters could take it seriously. That's how a lot of the flaming starts, someone saying something in jest, and someone else taking it literally when they shouldn't. Anyhoo, it's just like the old saying "there are no small parts, only small actors"...well, the same holds true here, there are no superior posters or post counts, just people. Some people post a lot, others don't, but they all count, and someone with 100 posts whose been here a month, compared to 500 posts from someone else whose been here as long, are still exactly the same/equal. There are times when getting to 1000 or 10000 can seem like a big deal, I mean, seriously, that's a lot of posts! And not to bag on anyone, but 100, 500, 2000, etc., those aren't as important. So yeah, posts are posts, good for you if you have a lot or a little. So let's just get past wanting to get to a certain number or whatever and just have fun and do what we do best: post.

I got a count, I got a count, I got a count, yeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!

Ok, sorry, couldn't help it. :)

As it's been said many times on another board I'm on, because there were quite a few people on there who were postpadding, it's the quality of the post that counts, not quantity.

Edit: Course on another board, there's a "Don't feed the trolls" thing...

Well about the post count issue, I go calmly and steady when posting, and another way to do that is by just not being worried about your post count.

People who stress about post counts are the bane of any online forum. Before I changed forum scripts on the forums I run, I actually hacked the code so that it didn't print out the post count next to everybody's post, and it wasn't a problem.

But then I changed to a better forum script, but this one was written in SQL instead of Perl, and since I know squat about SQL, I haven't tried to hack it to remove the post-count-printing code... and as soon as we changed over, people started getting all competitive over their post counts, even when I try to tell them not to be.

Post counts mean nothing, folks. It's quality that matters, not quantity.

As Barb correctly surmised, I was using your above post as an example. I meant no disrespect to you personally ccffan01.

I hate to say this, not just because I'm new here, but because it's a little unpleasant to point out... (especially not knowing Tim & Barb)... but I believe most of this started up with the Post Number Challange (by Christmas, if I recall correctly) y'all have going between you.

Obviously, this friendly competition was not meant to instigate such a response, but this sort of thing happens quite easily on forums of this size and attendance when any attention is brought specifically to Post Counts.

Hey, the post count ultimately means nothing aside from the fact that you've technically participated a lot on these boards. That doesn't mean you're any better or any worse than anyone else here. It's just something fun to have tacked onto your profile.

As for the competition between Barb and I - point taken. We're both responsible posters though, so it shouldn't be a big issue. I've stated very clearly in my original contest thread that spamming was a bad, bad thing. The contest isn't specifically about just getting more posts than the other - it's just a challenge that we'd like to see either of us accomplish. :)

You point out a very true statement but not saying Higher Posters are better but the higher your post count the more "respect" you get. It is a badge that you seem to have authority to other members and sometimes 1k+ members can get alittle cocky just because they have been here for awhile (They should still get respect if they are oldschool, but not like they are Admins) and have high post count. Also if someone wants to make a mildstone topic they can just go to "Is this thing on?" forum. :D

Aw, jeez, just what we need. The "Post Count Warning" thread turning into a "Post Count Boasting" thread. :D

Anyway, I've folded this topic into the rules reminder thread (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=51861). So I'm going to lock and unstick this one.
