This week we conclude Yusuke's first case as spirit detective, as Hiei is defeated, Kurama is released, and Koenma get's 100 spankings on his arse. Poor fella.

Now here's what we DIDN'T see!

YYH - The Three Eyes of Hiei

http://www.ppgworld.com/editlistboxes/censor.jpg 1. Black Box: "Shadow Sword" was "Blade of Demonic Subjugation"

http://www.ppgworld.com/editlistboxes/sidenote.jpg SN. Rather uncomfortable script change for the dub. The scene with Keiko and Yusuke on the roof was changed completely. Originally Keiko asks about Botan. Beats me how FUNi works.

http://www.ppgworld.com/editlistboxes/sidenote.jpg SN. More questionable script changes for the battle. The lines were acted out well, but in some cases unnecessary writing changes were made for the dub.

http://www.ppgworld.com/editlistboxes/cut.jpg 2. (1 sec.) In the preview, we see in the original Kasemaru singing on the karaoke machine. This was replaced on TV with some other fighter shouting his head off. This was most likely because Kasemaru has a tattoo on his head that could be considered offensive. I'll go into that next week though.

Yeah, after buying the YYH A New Apprentice DVD the other day, I was wondering whether the tattoo would be removed, or replaced with a smiley face a la Cowboy Bebop. Well, just kidding about the smiley face. FUNimation isn't that stupid. :D

Hmm. Not bad. Just one edit, and a very very minor one at that. I haven't watched that episode yet, but I'll look and compare the scripts.

Yea. The tattoo's a swastika. I'd cap a picture for you, but FUNimation has some kind of protection on their DVD.

Hmm... maybe that's why my CB DVD plays fine, but my YYH DVD (coincidentally, it's the same one) doesn't play correctly in my PS2 (I have to play it in my comp's dvd player). The video is all screwed up, and the brightness goes up and down wildly.

Who in their right mind would tattoo a nazi symbol on their head?

Not pay much attention in history class?

It was the symbol that nazis used during WWII.

In YYH's case, it's being used for its original meaning, for good luck. The Nazis kinda stole it from the asians and tilted it a little. FUNimation actually did try to explain to CN what it meant, but CN overruled their decision and made them remove it. No big loss though.

See, the Swasa was a Budhist symbol for peace and everything, and the Swastika was a symbol for disorder. The Swasa is the correct symbol, and the Swastika was the symbol backwards. I'm not sure which one he was wearing, because I haven't seen it yet. I'll watch it right now to check.

I just checked. The symbol isn't even a swastika, and CN made them cut it anyway!

Yeah the original sign was once used in a Pokemon card. But you know how those soccer moms can get, even though it wasn't the Swatsika. So in the new card they changed it to something else. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE PEOPLE, but there are some people who don't know the difference and those are the people that are always complaining.

Allen's Nickname.

Those ******s!!! Obviously, those people didn't bother to care. Just one look at anything that's "nazi-like" and they'll sue! I just hope the next generation could forget about this.

But comon. It was a justified edit. Who knows how many angry calls CN would've gotten if that appeared on TV.

Yeah, this really is a "pick your battles" kind of thing. The tattoo doesn't add any impact whatsoever to the show. Like, the marijuana leaf on Jet's shirt actually had some humor value, but this tattoo does absolutely nothing. Would it really be worth the trouble?

Okay, as interesting as this is and all, I kind of have a non releated question. When are the new YYH eps going to air!?!?!?!

The Toonheads wartime cartoons special had Swastikas, and no one cared.

It was in context with explanations from the narrator. There's a difference. And it's difficult to be offended by Nazis when they're getting the crap kicked out of them by Daffy Duck.

Hmmm... when Sci Fi aired Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer, they kept in all the nazi refrences and even the part that makes fun of Adam and Eve. It was also aired on Saturday morning! I wonder how they got away with it.

Actually, some Neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups use it. Ever see American History X?

And the Nazi's didn't take the symbol from the Asians, (even though a variation of the symbol is indeed Buddhist), it was originally a symbol of good luck and religious strength in the German catholic church. Hitler being catholic (or so he claimed), he lifted it for his own symbol when he became the leader of the Nazi party. Hitler HATED the Asian religions, why would he take one of their symbols?

Are you guys serious? Some of you don't know what a swastika is? !?

Hmm... maybe that's why my CB DVD plays fine, but my YYH DVD (coincidentally, it's the same one) doesn't play correctly in my PS2 (I have to play it in my comp's dvd player). The video is all screwed up, and the brightness goes up and down wildly.

That's because the DBZ DVD's are copy-protected. I'm assuming you don't have a TV with the audio/video jacks, and that you're putting the plugs into a VCR or something? That's the problem. When the signal goes through a copying device (like a VCR), something encoded on the DVD sends a signal to distort the video image. That's to prevent you from copying the contents of a DBZ DVD onto a blank VHS tape and distributing it.

What you'll need to do is go to Radio Shack and get you an RF Modulator (it's about $15). Hook up your PS2 to the RF Modulator, and the DVD's should play fine. Off the top of my head, I can't really think of any other DVD's that are copy protected. All of the DVD's from Bandai that I have (Gundam Wing Endless Waltz, Outlaw Star) aren't, and I don't think my Utena DVD's are, but I think Metropolis is. That and Perfect Blue, maybe? I dunno, all my DVD's are back at home (and I'm here at college), so I can't really check. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that there's a reason that your DBZ DVD's won't play correctly, and that there's a (relatively) inexpensive way to fix it.

I own two Yu Yu Hakusho DVDs, both playing fine on my PS2 through my VCR. So, I doubt that's the problem.

BTW, I made the screencap easily, I just have nowhere to upload it to.

Because he didn't realize it came from Asian religions. He thought it was specifically German so he used it without knowing. Or maybe he did know but didn't care if he was contradicting himself. After all, if he took over the world, would he care what other thinks of him? Not really since he has control.

It's just a guess.

For the record, Dragonball Z is not copy protected.. at least not more so then any other dvd.

They do however have Marcovision.. which screws with VHS tapes if you try to tape it.

And Macrovision wouldn't cause the problems if your routing it through a VCR, only if your taping it.

Well that's Hitler for you. He was nuts to begin with, and he didn't even realize he was stealing an Asian symbol when he "hated" Asian religions. (but then, the Japanese didn't side with Hitler because they believed with his ideas either, but I don't feel like getting into that right now)

What's Macrovision and how does it work? I'm interested now.
