View Full Version : How well does advertising work on you?

Last summer I was with two of my good friends laying on the floor watching tv and chatting. Suddenly a commercial came on television for Sonic. (For those that don't know, Sonic is a fast food place). The advertisement showed slushee drinks and me and my friends were silenced. For the whole thirty seconds we just stared at the tv, when the commercial ended we all looked at one another and said "lets get some". So we drove to Sonic and had slushees within five minutes.
Has this ever happened to anyone else? A commercial so strong that you just had to have the food or toy or whatever right then and there?

It works perfectly, I thank whoever came up with advertising, it's the only thing that can get me to turn the TV off!
Oh is that not it's purpose...?

Advertising never has immediate effects on me, but eventually it gets to my subconscious and I cave. That's about it.

I don't tend to pay attention to advertising. Sonic, for example, sucks really horribly bad in my area, and not even the best commercial for them will ever make me want to go to them. Not in a thousand years.
On the other hand, there are some things I may see on TV that I thought about before that I thought I would want (like the new Carol Burnett DVD coming out) and then I saw a commercial for that product at the store and remembered, "Oh, yeah, I wanted that!" and will go and buy it.
It really depends what they advertise. If its something I adore then yes. Other than that, well I pay no attention to.

I never really remember what billboards or telling me, I tune out what they're advertising on the radio. The net advertisements seem like the devil incarnate, darn those pop-ups! So those things only make me pissed and not want to have anything to do with what they're talking about. And for most tv commericials, I find the commericials awesome, but tend to always forget what the product is! Also, in my family, especially my dad, we all flip channels really fast. We never stay on a channel long if it's on commericials at that point. So as of yet, I can't really recall a commericial of any sort that's made me want to go out and get what they were selling.

To be honest, advertising doesn't really affect me. I mean, there are plenty of commercials on TV I love, and plenty of products that I buy that HAVE commercials, but I can't remember any recent time that a commercial actually inspired me to buy a product.
The only time I can think of was that terribly cheesy commercial for Sapparo Ichiban in the late 80's/early 90's. It always made me and my sisters laugh, and we were compelled to try it - and we did - and we liked it - and it's been a side-dish staple at our household ever since. :)

I don't think so. I don't remember advertisers names and I have an inbuilt tendency to ignore it. Even adverts I like, I rarely could tell you what it was, and certainly unlikely to have it affect my purchases. Some people seem more supseptable that others. Now my mother, she's truely a Homer Simpson when it comes to adverts.... :D

Yeah, I'm kinda like this. A lot of times I'll see an ad over and over, and it'll become extremely familiar to me, but if you asked me what product it was for, I wouldn't have the slightest clue.

Advertising only works on me when I'm impossibly hungry and there's nothing in the house to eat.

Ads? I remember those. I used to see them before they invented the remote and I took up channel surfing during the breaks. :D

I was thinking about this as I was drinking my Pepsi (for those who think young) and wearing my "designer" slacker clothes.
You shouldn't listen to advertising, be yourself (Sprite.)
After all, when your unique, there's only one (Jeep) of you.
so Smile (mc donalds) and take chances (Billy blaze here with new...)
Ah, whatever. Advertising is effective in getting me to trythings I did not know about... BUT if it sucks, I'm not using it again aven though they may advertise.

Advertising would work better for me if it weren't for the fine print. Because it seems that all the best deals are not available in Hawaii and Alaska. And many of the commercials, for Target, Jack in the Box, and many others, haven't made there way up here yet. So there pointless.
Although I would be lying in advertising didn't work on me, because I know, even if I don't realize it it does.
*looks at magazine* I want that and that and that!

Advertising has worked on me a couple of times. The most recent example is the Kingdom Hearts commercial. I'll never get tired of watching that commercial...the music is great and the visuals are amazing! As soon as I get a PS2, I am most definitely getting that game!

I'm not sure whether or not it really works. I guess it all depends on my mood (hungry, sad, etc) and if it matches an area of interest. For instance, I'm not about to run out and buy a washing machine just because I like the commercial.

Having spent the last fourteen years of my life being obsessed with motorsports like F1, CART, WRC and IRL, I'm damn glad advertising doesn't work on me - with all those cigarette brands sponsoring teams I'd be riddled with lung cancer by now...
On a more serious note though, it depends what the purpose of the ad is. You could say "They don't work because it didn't make me rush out and by X brand.", but, by the same token, you now know X brand exists, where as you may not have done before, so next time you need a similiar product, X brand is there in your mind, even if its only in the back of your mind...
Companies wouldn't spend the millions they do if the didn't know it works on many many different levels...
