Interesting DVD-related stuff

Over at http://www.dvdfile.com, it says that Sony Wonder will be releasing a new Underdog DVD that "features four classic episodes of the show, along with a never-before-seen Joe Harris storyboard interview, a still gallery and previews." Sony is also releasing a Felix the Cat DVD that "includes a collection of the best episodes from the 1958-59 season, as well as 1920's vintage footage, a Felix interview, promo reels, trivia game and a Felix sing-along." Both come out on July 31st.

Even more interesting is that Disney has opened up a DVD Support site, and it includes a feedback form! I wonder what kind of constructive criticism we could provide them with...

I gave the Underdog DVD a 1 star review at amazon.com because the episodes were all cut up and butchered. And I did the same thing for the Fantasia DVD for the same reason. I also said that I avoided buying both of those DVDs because of the censorship.

I did buy the Tom and Jerry DVD, but I just pretend that The Little Orphan isn't on it when I watch it. I gave the DVD 5 stars at amazon.com because of the 13 uncut cartoons.

But the info in your post is interesting. I'm just very suspicious of the possibility of future censorship on future DVDs. But the Disney feedback thing sure is a nice idea.

Disney owns Miramax, which released Pulp Fiction uncut on DVD. I guess a cartoon is considered to be more offensive than a graphic R-rated movie!

If I was to try to persuade Disney to change anything about their DVD releases, it would be to STOP THE FORCED TRAILERS. I, as an intelligent consumer, does not need to be force fed commercials, and putting trailers on a DVD as an optional bonus feature is fine. I will watch the trailers when I want to, but I don't want them coming up EVERY TIME I put the DVD in. I have not purchased certain Disney releases for this reason alone.

I believe Disney has already done away with the "forced trailers". I know Icabod & Mr. Toad (released in Oct.) has an option to skip through the trailers entirely. On Alice in Wonderland and Three Caballeros (and I think Fun and Fancy Free), I know you had to skip through each one individually which is a minor annoyance, but no reason to boycott buying those films on DVD.

I am not boycotting, just have a limited expense account. That means I can't get every DVD I want, and to be honest, it is the DVDs that have no bonus features and the DVDs that have forced trailers on them that are the first ones I will pass on when I can't buy everything I want.

I will buy Disney's special editions, however.

My point about Disney (and Benua Vista, and some others), is that I know that you can skip past them, and it is a whole heck of alot less annoying than having to fast forward past them on the old VHS format, but they can just as easilly put the trailers on there as an optional bonus feature. And you know what? I will get around to watching the trailers when I want to, I don't need them to come up everytime I watch the DVD. And I also buy DVDs that I know I will watch frequently. The forced trailers aren't as annoying on something I rent and will plan on only watching once, but they are still unnecessary. They need to just put them on there as an optional bonus feature.

Here's my complaint to them:

I bought the Fantasia DVD last Winter and discovered something horrible! It was censored. The Pastory Symphony has scenes with a black stereotype character that your video department edited out by zooming in and out of the frame to hide the character. I'm very dissappointed in the Disney DVD's now. On the Fantasia box, it clearly says "Walt Disney's Original Uncut Version". There are mentions of the DVD being uncut like this: "For the first time ever, Fantasia is availible on DVD in a special, uncut edition!" and "Restored, Remastered Original Theatrical Edition."

I feel cheated since I got the DVD because I thought it would really be the true theatrical version.

Other titles like Make Mine Music and Melody Time were edited on DVD (The removal of the Martins and the Coys sequence from "Music" is inexcuseble!)

I refuse to buy any more Disney DVD's because of this horrible deception!

I DO NOT WISH TO HAVE MY MONEY RETURNED AT ALL!

I simply would like the TRUE uncensored version of Fantasia to replace the defective, censored edition.

Please correct this awful problem as soon as you can. Even your website lies about the DVD being uncut.

I have photographic evidence to prove these scenes were censored.

I'd like to point out that I don't want ANY refund...just the original cut. If this doesn't work, I'm sending that petition to Roy Disney.
