According to The Comics Continum next season of X-Men: Evolution will take it's cue from the comics. "The Jean/Scott relationship is something we focused on," X-Men: Evolution story editor Greg Johnson told The Comics Continuum. "It's not a throwaway. It's such an important part to the future of X-Men.
Greg Johnson continued on, saying that it's unlike that viewers will see "...much kissing in a Kids' WB! show, but we were able to actually get some elements of romance and some Moonlighting kind of relationship between them. Sparks fly, you can tell. That's something that we did keep in mind throughout the whole thing. Not that it pays off at the end of the season, but it shapes up as a new level."
A relationship between these two characters was hinted at, especially in the premiere episode and show intro. In the previous X-Men animated series, Scott & Jean were an item, and remain so even in the current comics, dispite their rumored upcoming split. But the romance isn't the only thing Johnson said that is in store. Expect the kids to be more like everyday teens. They will act like everyday teens and even start dating. Johnson continued to say that more changes are definatly in the works. One of the changes will be to "...break up the clique that was kind of established in the first season, where they would all stick together at the same lunch table. We've got Jean's friend, Karen, and there's an episode coming up where there's a dance, where a lot of the characters go. It's the first time actually that they're in a dating situation with normal kids."
The plus to the second season is that the core characters are already established. While new characters will be introduced, the current ones are well known among watchers. The Comics Continuum also talked to Boyd Kirkland about the new season. Kirkland says the second season is different becuase "...we've already got the cast fairly well assembled and all together."
Kirkland continues on about the second season, saying how "...we had to spend several episodes just introducing the members of the group, so now you hit the ground running with a fully assembled team, with personalities established. We know where we're starting from, so in the second season, everything just gets bigger and more intense and we keep introducing new characters and new situations. It's just gets bigger and more out of control, what can I tell you?"
Dating and relationships won't be the only changes in the pipeline for the X-Men: Evolution cast. They will all be getting a new wardrobe that that will continue the contemporary style. All of the cast is expected to get new clothes that will be worn throughout the season.
Stay tuned for more news!
