hey guys. having a blast out here in san diego. sorry for no caps. crappy hotel computer. anyway, the AS panel has yet to happen (it's on saturday) but if no one else has posted yet, Adult Swim Reactor is on the way and they plan to experiment with subtitled shows. One Piece and other shows are included in the streaming content. And of course new YYH by the year's end. Hopefully i can get the news to you guys quicker. Cya.

Thanks for keeping us up to date, man. That's great news.

I knew they'd figure out a solution to showing people subbed anime. Hehe.

It looks like this can only be the beginning of even more good news.. Saturday seems so far away.

Can we have a complete thread of news from the Con when all is said and done because i'm totally lost.

Are they really gonna call it Adult Swim Reactor?

Probably. It doesn't seem like Toonami Reactor is gonna survive this transition.

Ah-HA! Another piece of the puzzle. Looks like Shonen Jump has a little more in common with AS than we originally believed. How much you want to bet that the website mentioned in the SJ press release was actually referring to this?

So who got the rights to One Piece? I recall that a non-Funimation studio rep at AX mentioned outside a panel that Funimation was looking into the series. I've looked, but can't find where I read that now. Anyhow, if it happened to be a Viz rep...then all I can say is: HMM.

If it is Funimation, though, don't expect it to get started until late next year, after Blue Gender, DBZ, and Fruits Basket are done.

yes it will be called adult swim reactor. they even showed some screenshots of the interface. it looks much like AS.com with the pictures of the pool images and such. streaming content in the upper right left and such, info in the upper right. AS Reactor was mainly created to promote the US release of Shonen Jump.

I also saw Char's Counterattack at the theater. If this is coming to AS, it's safe to say there's absolutely nothing questionable in the content that could need editing. Unless Ocean Group or Bandai throws a s**t into the dialogue or something.

Also I'll post any and all con news in this thread. I doubt there will be much AS news today though.

Andrew, it's likely going to be subtitled, not dubbed. Even if FUNimation got the rights, typing in the subtitle text would take maybe a week or two (or perhaps a little longer considering One Piece has a lot of episodes).

If you don't mind, I've posted this stuff in the news (along with general Char's Counterattack information since we haven't mentioned that yet).

And you're fully creditted, of course.

Andrew

I was under the impression that using subtitled series was a "we're thinking about it" kind of thing.

Okay, so even if it's going to be subtitled, I seriously doubt that it's going to be a matter of simply "typing in the subtitles." Funi (or insert other company here) would want them to use the same subs that they will eventually use on the DVDs. Which means they have to actually translate and complete those subtitles before it could play on ASR. Given Funi's (and most companies, really) full plates about this time, that could take awhile.

Not to say that it couldn't start sometime soon, mind you. But I wouldn't expect them to go one-ep-a-week through the entire series' 100+ episodes.

Oh, and one more thing. They had better not even BEGIN thinking about using RealPlayer again. The subtitled opening in Record of Lodoss War on Toonami Reactor was completely unreadable. And being able to read the subtitles in a subtitled anime is, you know, kind of important.

Killtacular
08-02-2002, 01:53 PM
Maybe they'll use a larger resolution?

I think they're obligated to use Realvideo. Like that's the only thing they have permission for.. cause they're an affiliate of Netscape.com, if I'm not mistaken, so that would sort of throw a wrench into the works if they were to use Windows Media.p

Beat
08-02-2002, 01:56 PM
Or Quicktime.

Luckily, even fansubbed versions of Char's don't have the s word, which leaves it pretty much uncensored.

As for AS reactor, what's planned? (Don't say EVA, Don't say EVA)

Andrew
08-02-2002, 02:01 PM
Well, crap. They did use Windows Media before, but that was way back on Reactor 1.0 and I don't know what their affiliate status was back then.

A larger resolution might help, yes, but that would leave 56k people way, way out in the cold. (But then, were 56k users even able to watch the stuff on Toonami Reactor?)

Hopefully they find some way to work it out...this thing definitely has some great potential.

Killtacular
08-02-2002, 02:05 PM
Reactor's only for broadband. They tried making it available to 56k users, but let's face it. There's just no way to accomodate them. If you're going to stream ANYTHING on the web, get broadband, plain and simple.

Andrew
08-02-2002, 02:12 PM
Ah, okay. I remember there being a 56k/Broadband option, but then it disappeared. I guess that's why.

Quicktime would be very nice, too. I've never had a complaint about their streaming, either.

Beat
08-02-2002, 02:51 PM
But with the netscape thingy, I doubt they would use Quicktime.

ohmrbill
08-02-2002, 03:05 PM
Can't they just give you a few options? Just about every other streaming video place on the net lets you choose between QuickTime, Real player, or Window Media Player.

zimbach
08-02-2002, 03:41 PM
I'll be happy so long as they use anything BUT Windows Media Player.
It would be nice if the clips were downloadable, too, instead of streaming only, but I don't expect that to happen. It's just annoying to watch a show on a dail-up line, only be able to watch the low-quality version, and have so start over from the beginning every time I get cut off.

No AS news to report today. I saw the dub of G Gundam "Roar of the Winning Punch" but that's a Toonami thing. I DID however see Inu-Yasha dub episode 1. No editing would be required for AS. In fact it seems like Viz removed any and all cussing. Also the voice acting for I-Y is subpar. The female vas aren't too great.

Adult Swim panel tomorrow.

livingfruitvirus

i'd ALSo like to point out that not all ASR titles will be subbed. just some. since AS/Toonami wants to appeal to the mainstream, and not the niche, CN has been kicking around the subtitle theory for a long time now. however, if there's a high demand for subtitles via feedback from Adult Swim reactor, the network will consider airing subtitled anime.

Well, crap. Again. That's exactly what a report early in the year said, but then a report a month ago claimed that there were mild obscenities present.

As for the editing, if I recall correctly, the first ep was relatively tame...the hair demon hasn't even shown up yet, right? That's when things start getting a bit more violent (and then it apparently continues to increase in violence throughout the series).

i'd ALSo like to point out that not all ASR titles will be subbed. just some.

Given your initial report and reports from elsewhere, that was what it sounded like to me ("experimenting" seemed to indicate they weren't going to go all out).

I'd also like to mention something that was said on another board. Realize that I'm only relaying what I was told by someone who attended the panel. According to that person, there wasn't any mention made about One Piece being on ASR, but rather they were showing mock-screens of what ASR might look like, and an image of OP was present in the streaming section. However, they also showed it playing "Dragonball or Dragonball Z" in order to give an example of the ability to display information while the video is playing. So it's obviously early in the design stage, and I don't know that we can count on that as being a confirmation of OP airing on ASR.

If nothing else, it should at least mean they're looking into having it on there.

Adult Swim panel tomorrow.

Today now. Can't wait. :D

Unfortunately, DBZ subbed seems like it MAY show up on ASR. ASR was created to promote Shonen Jump, and will show anime off Jump. DBZ is one of the more popular manga titles in Jump, so unfortunately, it seems possible.

Kinda doubtful, but remember, ASR seems more like a promotion device than Adult Swim.

Killtacular
08-03-2002, 08:32 PM
DBZ is only going to be in Shonen Jump for a limited time, I heard. So when it hops ship, I can imagine it hopping away from ASR as well.

As of now it seems it may be a promotional device but who knows what it will turn into. Patience is the name of the game and we will have to wait and see.

JDuncan

Even if it is exploited as a promotional device for jump, it'll be a good thing if it introduces more people to AS and ratings go up and we get a new season of MH.

Well that doesn't bode well for IY's dub. Inuyasha is known for having a potty-mouth and a VERY nasty tongue in the japanese version so toning that down may ruin his character.

Well, they have to at least finish out the manga, considering that they won't be running it by itself anymore. Fortunately, it's starting off in Shonen where they left off with the individual release, so there won't be quite as much to go through. But I don't think it's even reached the Buu saga yet.

On the bright side, ASR may just be in such an early stage that the DBZ example shown at the panel was the DBZ from the original Toonami Reactor retrofitted for ASR to show off what they can do with the interactivity (DBZ being the only show ever on Toonami Reactor that has a connection to Shonen). So who knows?

Well the manga is QUITE toned down and I'm sure they'll keep in his petty insults but taking out his B words and such shouldn't effect the character too much but if they take out damn and hell as well then it's just stupid.

hey guys! well it happened. the panel was today. we saw a new ATHF called dumber days, and an old HBAAL episode because none of the un-aired epiisodes are complete. once again, forgive the computer keyboard. they showed us a trailer of ATHF made for comic con too. in it Shake promotes his, um, new show with Boxy Brown (a box with an afro). Van Halen moves in too. of course it's all lies. hehe.

here's a taste of the spoiler for Dumber Days:

While Dr. Weird is about to dye Steve's hair, Shake is doing stunts in Carl's pool using Meatwad's brain. Frylock and Shake discover Meatwad's brain is nothing more than a toy with a jingle bell. So now meatwad is depressed, that is, until Carl comes to the aid to offer Frylock a brain. Frylock wants nothing to do with it, but Carl drops off the brain anyway. Frylock plugs it into Meatwad and ol meaty begins to read and grow smarter. He goes to the library now and is really really growing in size. While giving people rides using Carl's car and levitating it, Shake is using his new egg beater to pass through matter. Carl is pissed, and Frylock takes Meatwad's brain, which was actually his original brain with glitter and sparkles. Meatwad soon realizes and goes back to normal, and Shake's matter transporter stops working. Carl now wonders about the original brain. When they open it up it looks purple and weird. Back at Dr. Weird's, Steve is on a table strapped in, and the back of his skull is opened, and no brain is present.

And now the news.....

- A deal over The Ripping Friends is soon to be completed. New episodes + the original 8 from FOX. ALL 8 too.
- Sorry. No new Mission Hill or Oblongs.
- New ATHF, Sealab, Birdman, etc....in October.
- New Birdman episodes involve Dynomutt (dying), Blue Falcon, the Laffalympics, Gloop and Gleep (divorce case), and one of Birdman's old one-shot enemies returning for revenge.
- Rejected is being delayed thanks to lawyers. Sadly, it's not as easy as shaking hands and saying "ok."
- None of the AS pilots have been decided for a series because CN wants to wait for ALL the AS pilots to air this year before making a final decision.

And when it comes to Adult Swim Action, be on the lookout for...

More new Yu Yu Hakusho (last few season 1 eps plus season 2)
Inu-Yasha
The Big O season 2 (maybe season 1, for continuity reasons)
Char's Counterattack
Ghost in the Shell (TV)

I had to get that info after the panel from Mike Lazzo because the panel was mostly about Adult Swim Comedy.

They're also working to get the Cowboy Bebop movie, unless a premium channel or something gets to it first. They have to wait til it's out of theaters however. Anyone curious about Ranma 1/2, they don't even know what that is. lol. CN and Bandai continue to get along, but they're not biased towards them. Bandai just happens to have many appealing and interesting titles, and they're very enthusiastic when it comes to TV.

Anyway, that's the Adult Swim Comic Con panel news. Next year there will also be a Toonami panel with some of the producers of Toonami (like Sean Akins).

So Big O's confirmed for ASA now. That's great news. And Inu-Yasha's coming, that's a relief after a nasty rumor that it didn't work out. GitS kinda surprised me the most, but that's good to know. And naturally, new YYH is nice to have confirmation of.

YES!!! BIG O 2!!! So Lazzo and company are aware of the demand and are officially working on it.... that makes me very happy. Although I couldn't care less about YYH and Inu Yusha, it's good that they're keeping their eyes on GITS. It's definitely one to watch, that much I think we can all agree on. Also good to hear about the Cowboy Bebop movie, although I'm sure that I'll have seen it a dozen times by the time it hits TV.

And if nothing else, with Char's Counterattack, we know that they're looking into doing the occasional movie... also very good news.

On the comedy side, nothing is really blowing me away, but I'm not dissapointed either. Well, no, wait, I am... I really wish CN would pass on The Ripping Friends and pursue something a little better. But that's just my personal tastes.

Anyway, it sounds like AS put in a solid showing this year. Nice to hear that our burdgeoning block is getting the attention it deserves.

Plus, the first 2 episodes are pretty important. You can't call it nonsense or anything, you can't just watch the last 13 episodes, so people new to the series wouldn't catch on right away. So, for the fans who haven't seen it, they have to air the first 13 episodes, say, in October, when Outlaw Star ends.

Man this is some great news.... now where to start?

ASC:

As has been said before, pretty much what was expected but that's not bad at all. New ATHF alone is worth the wait :D

ASA:

Obviously big stuff here. Big O 2 should be very cool, as should Ghost in the Shell TV (saw the movie awhile back, weird but cool). Very surprised to hear that they are actively seeking the Cowboy Bebop movie, if they can get it they may have paved the way for future movies (new Friday night block in the future???). Heck, even if they only get the CB movie it was worth the effort... very cool.

Oh yeah, I see episode 13 leading into new stuff, and every episode builds upon something that came before it. But even we, the people who have seen the first season many times over, really don't know jack crap about what's really going on. I think that the new season could kick off with Roger saying: "I'm Roger the Negotiator. I have an android girl who I think I'm falling in love with. I live in Paradigm City. Good point JK, I see what you mean. CCF is a flagship block for the network (Dexter alone is big) so they definately would not be up to doing that big of an overhaul for a new AS block. I do think that they may (ie. possibly, perhaps, maybe, etc.) try to establish a "movie night" on some day of the week to show AS movies seperate from the current sat-sun blocks (although the fact that we have seen marathons in these blocks could mean I am wrong, they may use a once a month formula for sat and/or sun movie programing replacement). Oh well, the point is I am happy with the news regardless.

Hopefully they can come to a solution in January. By then we'll have had at least 20-26 episodes for each Williams Street show, which should be enough for weeknights(Hell, Time Squad gets weekdays, and it only had 20 episodes).

Although I hope they remember to include ASA in the weeknight plans.. if such plans are created.

Cool news, sadly no Trigun for now, is AS reactor still gonna have the Toonami Reactor shows?

oh... wow...

this is totally awesome news...

GitS is a particularly nice aquisition. At the least, the animation will be unreal. If the adaption from the manga works well, it'll be excellent.

Inu-Yasha will keep ASA filled with plenty of new episodes.

Big O 2... I'm very happy this one is coming to the block. The only way it could be better is they ran the first 13 episodes uncut.

Char's Counterattack will go nicely with MSG. I wonder if the open up the possibility for other movies.

Ripping Friends should be interesting. Sure, it's yet another hand me down, from kids block even, but the few episodes I caught of it seemed have a more adult undercurrent.

It's good to hear that there is still hope for the pilots. I just hope the people who made them are still interesting in making a series should CN want them to make show.

New episodes of the existing shows are always great.

The only bad news is the Rejected delay and the lack of new episodes for the Mission Hill and Oblongs. I wish Rejected would get sorted, because it would seem that it could theoretically open things up, atleast in terms off the one off shows. Letting MH and Oblongs wrap the episodes that were half done would have been cool, but I suppose the money would better put toward the pilots once they pick which ones they want done.

The only open ends now are, what will happen with Baby Blues season two? and, when will new action stuff turn up?

one other thing: what's Mike Lazzo like?

I'm very happy about this news, too! Can't wait to see more episodes of Yu Yu Hakusho! I'm also excited that Ghost In The Shell TV series is coming, too, very very nice addition! Big O 2 won't be edited to Toonami standards! Char's Counterattack is the first UC Gundam anime to be edited to AS standards. I can't wait to finally see Inu-Yasha... in English. It would be interesting to hear IY's opening theme played on American TV.

I doubt they will get the Cowboy Bebop movie to air on the channel first. Since a major studio is releasing it, I think we'll see it listed on PPV first, then Showtime, and then finally on Cartoon Network (with edits). Showtime, HBO, and Encore seem to see anime as a hot property, too. I wouldn't be surprised if it got aired on a premium network first.

Still, I'm very happy and am pleased with Cartoon Network!

To bad there was no word on Trigun on ASA, but I've already seen the series, so I'm OK with that :D

Big O 2 sounds great! I may have to pick up the first 4 DVDs if Bandai isn't the one releasing the new series according to various rumors and Bandai America's knowledge, or lack thereof, of BO2 unless they're just playing dumb. Otherwise i'll wait for a box set release.

Glad ASA will be getting IY considering I won't be getting th DVDs for that one, since Viz is obsessed with that whole "3 episodes per disc even though the series is 60+ episodes" And I don't believe that "we'll do 3 eps per disc for the first 8 discs and then re-evaluate" Viz will never have more than 3 episodes per disc on any new release. They're evil in that way. Mind you not Manga evil, but evil nonetheless.

I wasn't expecting GitS TV to be announced so soon considering it's still in production in Nippon(that's Japan kids ;) ), but I should have guessed when people started talking about it being on AS after the series announcement last week, and Bandai's relationship w/ CN it was bound to happen. I'm surprised love Hina wasn't announced though, given the "cleaned up dub" on the DVD, but again I don't mind since I will be getting the DVDs for that one, so I can fill up my nice box I got with volume 1.

Another thing that suprised me is that Initial D wasn't picked up by CN. Given Tokyopop's extreme desire for this to be broadcast on TV, I thought it would be a given that AS would get it. I personally would rather see Real Bout High School on TV myself. The VA for Tai from Digimon, and also jerk lead character from PC(I just don't remember his name right now, but I'm sure we all know who I'm talking about :p ), actually sounds good in this series from what I've watched so far.

Nice to see that Adult Swim is getting into the movies business w/ Char's Counterattack, hopefully they'll try and pick up the Tenchi movies or maybe even Akira for an eventual showing. My guess that if the ratings are good enough, any movie from the Bandai or Pioneer libraries will be up for consideration.

I'll give Ripping Friends a chance, but I really think that John K is past his prime. Rejected I continually look forward to finally seeing. No new Mission Hill for now sucks, but maybe something will come later. I don't expect another season of Baby Blues, nor do I want one. I may not like the comic strip it's based on too much, but it's much better than the series IMO. I can't wait to see the other pilot's in store for AS. I know there's Finkle Files, which I saw the stealth broadcast of, and Party Wagon, by the guy who did Hey Arnold, but I'm not sure of the others, anyone know what they they are?

Wow this is kind of a long post, so I think I'll wrap it up here.

In other news.... Happy 800th post to me! I've only been here since last September, and hopefully I'll hit my 1000th post by then. Later  :D

Was pretty much expecting that they'd eventually air/look into airing most of the ASA titles named (Bebop the Movie, Big O 2, Char's Counterattack, Inu Yasha) but am happy to know that they are finally confirmed. Really looking forward to the dub of the Bebop movie, and seeing those other 3 things for the first time on ASA. :) Ghost in the Shell's a nice surprise; have never seen the movie nor read the manga, but since Yoko Kanno's doing the music its a must see for me :D Dissappointing to hear that Rejected's still being held up, hope we see it someday... :(

Also glad from the other end to not hear them announcing anything that would come off as a disaster, like Love Hina. AS sure as hell is moving in the right direction :)

We kept saying "Just give ASA a little time...It'll get better." Well, it looks like they've finally justified our faith in them, as this is most definitely a large (yeah, I'm gonna say it, too) step in the right direction.

I don't really have anything to say that hasn't already been said. I do have a couple of questions, though.

Is there any possibility that they'll re-edit the first season of Big O? I know, I know...I'm just hoping.

If they don't show the first Big O season on ASA, is it possible that they'll show it on Toonami to try and gain new fans/interest?

Is there a thread that has some info on Inu Yasha? I'm not really familiar with it.

At any rate, a very sincere thanks to livingfruitvirus, our man on the inside. It looks like AS is finally beginning the change we've all been expecting and hoping for.

Ok, realize this -- a lot of the reason we see so many Bandai shows is that Bandai realizes the value of having their shows on TV. They figured out through the Gundam shows and CB that TV airings = video and DVD sales, which is where the real money is at.

Hence, I wouldn't be suprised if, per episode, it's only costing CN maybe 3-4x as much as it costs to make an original Flash animated epiosde (i.e. Home Movies). Realize that to invest the money that Mission Hill and the Oblongs had in their original runs (typically over $1 million per episode), CN could barely make 6 episodes of either of those shows, whereas that same amount of money would be 13 episodes EACH of ATHF, Brak, Sealab, HB:AAL, Aquaman and likely still have change for some pilots all COMBINED.

I'm sure that not only is ADV charging more per episode than Bandai (thus making it a lot less tempting for CN since they'd lose money on the shows without some amazing sponsorship at 11:00 pm on a Saturday night, which just doesn't exist), but that further they're going to charge more to edit their shows to CN BS&P standards thus driving the price up on their shows even more.

Ok ranting off, I love this news, but I hope some people realize why Bandai shows and WS original ASC shows get new episodes whereas other shows don't get new episodes at all or just plain never get acquired in the first place.

Well, no really big surprises here (except maybe GitS), but then that's what I was prepared to expect. Kind of a shame we didn't get many dates, or even estimated timeframes, though. Anyways, here's my thoughts.

Ripping Friends: Eh. Didn't care to watch it on Fox, don't care about it now. That said, I know a lot of people love Spumco to death, so I'm glad they're finally getting into the block...even if I probably won't watch it (just never been a fan of their work, myself). Definitely good that they're creating new episodes, too, so that it's not just something that's already aired on another network.

No new Mission Hill and Oblongs: Doesn't bother me. Never much cared for MH and Oblongs doesn't look terribly promising. It's a shame for fans of those shows, though. Unfortunately, I guess the cost is just too prohibitive.

New WS Comedy Shows: Great, but completely expected. Nice to see we'll get them as early as October, though.

Rejected + Lawyers = Sad Andrew
I don't even know what the show is like, but nothing deserves to be put through this kind of treatment.

New Yu Yu Hakusho: Again, was anyone really expecting there to NOT be new eps of YYH?

Inu-Yasha: Expected again. I don't recall any rumors of it NOT coming, just that things were being delayed by something. And this doesn't exactly help quell those rumors. Sure would've been nice to have some kind of projected date. That said, nothing claims it'll air in September, and he's been good for his word before, so I believe him.

Big O 2: Well, there's one part of the mystery solved, anyhow. Still too many questions floating around, though.

Char's Counterattack: Yeah, um, terribly old news thanks to Bandai.

Ghost in the Shell TV: I'd say this qualifies as that "surprise licensing" I mentioned, for the simple fact that I never, ever expected them to come right out and say it this early. This is hugely huge, ridiculously wonderful news to me. I think this might have the potential to seriously put ASA on the map, just like CB did for the original block.

At least it answers the question about why Bandai kept mentioning the broadcast rights in the press release. But it still leaves us with another question: how soon can it air? I have a feeling that the answer to that might be very...surprising. Just a hunch, though.

CB Movie: I don't know what their chances are of getting it, but it's nice to know that they're looking into it. This + CCA = ASA Movies.

So what the heck is up with the Aquaman show? No mention of it at all? I'm beginning to wonder if it even exists.

Grat news, about the Bebop movie I can honestly see it going completely unedited sans the language. The only real violent part is the fight in the train and that's nowhere near as violent as RFB.

I was quite suprised Love Hina wasn't mentioned and honestly I thought Clerks would be announced as well.

GitS isn't that much of a suprise to me,I expected this one.I think CN is gonna use this as the flagship show and invest a ton into the advertising and I wouldn't be suprised if CN shelled out the bucks to get it dubbed along with the Jpn version for a simultaneous airing. If played well GitS can be the Dragon Ball Z of Adult Swim.

Not confirmed, no. Bandai claimed that it hadn't been decided on yet, but given the fact that it starts airing in October and that as of July 22nd they were working on the tenth episode (http://www.production-ig.com/GhostTV_Journal.html), it would seem to me that they should have some idea of how many there will be.

All signs point to 26, though.

Allright, so I know that all this has been said:

I'm an ASC fan and I never saw the Ripping Friends, but I'll give it a shot, and there wasn't anything else new to speak of.

What I really don't get though is why no one asked a question about SGC2C. I know, it's old, it may very well be on its last legs (well, not if you saw any of the last season, maybe the funniest ever), and I understand that WS is working on other stuff. But, it surprises me that no one even asked about it at the panel. I love all the other WS shows, don't get me wrong, but it seems very wrong to have an Adult Swim panel without the mention of the Ghost at all. DVD probably won't happen :(, new epis are looking grim, but I'm holding out hope and preparing to enjoy starting at episode 1 in September.

According to one of the show's writers:
"This series is not a sequel, nor a remake. It is a completely new series based on several new plots by Shirow Masamune. But of course, I cannot give any information about the storyline at this point of time."

Make of that what you will. I also found confirmation from him that the series will be 26 episodes long (I knew I read that somewhere).

And what's this about another AS series in production in Japan to be announced at Nan Desu Kan, DBGT airing in September, and CN trying to get more Cowboy Bebop made (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/article.php?id=2419)???

EDIT: Scratch that about the "other AS series," I went to the site referenced (http://www.anime-tourist.com/article.php?sid=289), and the series is Ghost in the Shell. But get this -- they claim someone said it WILL be a simultaneous US/Japan release! When, exactly, is Nan Desu Kan?

Is there any possibility that they'll re-edit the first season of Big O? I know, I know...I'm just hoping.

I see no reason they can't show it uncut. The edits on Toonami were pretty light, and unlike Bebop, I can't see a single thing on that show which would ever need to be edited. It's a pretty clean show, really.

And although the last three shows to come to ASA from Toonami weren't reedited, all three of them were more or less placeholders, to kill time until we got new accquisitions. Big O, on the other hand, is a property people are more excited about, so WS might take the time to go back and de-edit the first season. I'm crossing my fingers, that's for sure.

Although I can guarantee you that if we see Season 1, we'll have "Cast in the name of God". That much I'm sure of.

Yeah, no kidding. Of course it will never happen, but I'm dissapointed that CN is even trying.

Not that I blame them. CB has been very succesful, and has the kind of good word of mouth buzz that not a lot of shows get. Well you're right about Big O's content not being that bad, but you are a little off on Toonami's editing. While the early episodes weren't that bad, later, ones, like Winternight Phantom were butchered. And of course there's the most ridiculous edit in the history of American television, removing 'Merry Christmas' from Demonseed

Guys. Guys.

If Cartoon Network were trying to get a second season of Cowboy Bebop, livingfruitvirus would've told us.

Anime Tourist is FULL of what some consider "doubtful material" and what I consider "lies". They even posted some of livingfruitvirus's stuff without his permission in the past(like his trip to Williams Street).

DBGT is not going to air in September. CN is not trying to get a second season of Bebop made. Williams Street is simply not that stupid.

Also, airing anything uncut would be tricky. CN would have to make a new deal with Bandai, because they only have the legal permissions to air the tapes they editted.

It'll cost them some change to get the rights to show Big O 1 uncut, and while I can't say they won't, it looks doubtful to me.

I wonder if they can even go back into the program and reverse the edit on CAST YE IN THE NAME OF GOD. We'll have to cross our fingers on that one.

As for this "other series" to be announced, again, this news came from Anime Tourist, so take it with a grain of salt.

Bandai WOULD mind. Big O 1 would be used as a tool to promote Big O 2. And since money wouldn't be going to Bandai for any profits CN gets from the second season, they'd be throwing money away by giving the uncut dub for free.

Because, after all, and I've repeated this... god, I can't count the amount of times:

I'm quite excited about Inuyasha coming, and I'm just itching to record the episodes off TV - it's cheaper than buying 3-episodes-each discs for a 80+ episode series, right? Still, if I ever do invest in the series, the TV airing will hold me until a boxset comes out, even if they are dubbed ;)

I'm happy about this news. I'll be watching AS a lot more often!

So am I - I heard InuYasha is a pretty good series :)

Final announcements:

- Williams Street will continue to edit Bandai shows. So when GitS airs, if it needs editing, WS will do it because Bandai feels they are best suited for the job.

- Jerry Chu doesn't know exactly why the MSG OP doesn't appear here, but assumes it has something to do with Sunrise in Japan not wanting it to.

Lastly, I saw the first 3 uncut episodes of Inu-Yasha's dub, and nothing I saw really needed editing. In fact Viz is really dumbing down the language. They're also adding in stupid dialogue and juvenile comments and expletives. But comon. "Toto, I don't think we're in Tokyo anymore." Grow up. Literally!

And thus concludes Comic Con 2002. Next year there will be both AS and Toonami panels.

I'll continue to read the toned down manga, because it seems alot better than the toned down dub. They don't even have TV-PG language? I'm thinking now IY may as well be on Toonami Midnight Run...

Like I said, this doesn't bode well for Inuyasha's dub. Please tell me you're exaggerating the "juvenile" comments.

And I still don't like them removing IY's language. Does he at least cuss a little? Or make ruthless insults?

Anyone who believes news from Anime Tourist is pretty damn gullible. Oh did you hear they're going to show hentai on ASA next month? Completely uncut, and it'll be TV-Y7 also! Don't hold your breath on new CB episodes, unless you like the idea of death by asphyxiation.

Do you speak of HHAHH?? (Hardcore Hentai Action Half Hour) As far as I know, CN plans to air it on Toonami.

(Note" Me and some chat buddies created HHAHH. It does exist. But, It doesn't exist. Muahaha.)

Well, he said "explicitives" so, that could mean something...well...I hope.

I know I am very late but thanks for the news livingfruitvirus. Anyway my opinion is mostly the same as everyone's given. I am happy to hear about Ghost in the Shell Series, more Yu Yu Hakusho, the possible expansion to weeknights, Inu-Yasha, and of course more Birdman, ATHF, and Sealab. I hope the Rejected issue gets settled soon and it is good. Sad but not surprised to hear about Mission Hill, I really hope it's possible to get new episodes. Some way, somehow. I also wish something was mentioned also about SGC2C, but I guess we'll have to wait.

I'm not too happy to hear about the Ripping Friends though. Okay I haven't seen it but the commercials didn't look that good and a friend of mine didn't like it. I also don't like the fact that it was previously on a kids block now onto an adult block. Well like every AS show, I am going to give it a chance. I personally think CN really should try picking up a show like Family Guy, The Critic, Dr. Katz, etc. and catch many other viewers' attention. I know there's money issues but maybe they could work around it someway, somehow.

???

How can they be uncut when the language was dumbed down?

Williams Street may be a little less stricter on the edits than they were on Bebop, since the AS blocks are more well-known.
Viz may be dumbing down the dialouge because so they don't interfere with CN's guidelines. It's still not a good idea. It's also bad, because Viz sometimes uses the dub script as the subtitles on the DVD. Many otaku are gonna be angry!

While I must say I'm a little disappointed at VIZ's decision to water down Inu-Yasha's dialogue for the anime, I'm not really THAT disappointed. I've read all 11 volumes of Inu-Yasha, and while the dialoge is definately tame, I really can deal with it. The manga overall is still kept quite intact, and I've enjoyed it very thoroughly. Besides, hearing a person from the Feudal Century of Japan saying something like "Shut the f*** up" or "I want the sword attached to your f*****g hip" does sound a little out-of-place to me.

And the anime, is toned down even further...and VIZ didn't even step in to do it! There's a lot less blood and gore and nudity isn't even a concern. So even if the dialoge for the anime is watered down, to me it hasn't really lost anything. Of course, I can only give my real opinion once I hear the dub for myself.

By the way, since we're on the topic of the Inu-Yasha dub, do we know anything more about it? Do the voice actors match the characters? Do they do a pretty decent job on the dub? Can we expect a dub with quality more like Cowboy Bebop (very good), Pilot Candidate (pitiful), or Yu Yu Hakusho (middle ground)?

Well he doesn't cuss like that, but his tongue is very nasty and rude. Besides it's part of his character. I'm pretty sure there's good reason why he's like that.

I made a thread that announced the dub cast for the first 29 episodes a while ago. I could search around for it for you.

EDIT - Here it is: http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=40562

Actually, on a site that translates the Inu-Yasha manga separately from VIZ, Inu-Yasha actually does have a tongue like that. I was very surprised when I read what was on that site; Inu-Yasha does have quite a mean tongue. But what I found odd was that when I watched fansub versions of the episodes, Inu-Yasha's tongue was pretty tame, except in one case where a fansubber decided to translate his words to "Shut the..." well, you know what.

I guess there's just no way to translate Japanese to English properly. I mean, when Inu-Yasha tells Kagome she makes him wretch, that's one of the worst ways to insult someone in Japan. Maybe we're supposed to learn Japanese in order to truly be satisfied with watching anime. There's just no way to satisfy everyone.

And about the dub...I saw that list, and I'm very impressed with some of the signed-on talent. I just wanted to know the end-result, now that some dubbed episodes have been seen.

That other translator toned UP the dialouge. It's like (sorry for the comarison) DBZ's anime labs subs. I've seen DBZ subs where they made him say, "You ****ing bastard, I'll make you ****ing pay for destroying my ****ing house!" or something like that.

There was a report that says that it's not coming ever, but it was decided that it was BS. So, I guess not.

Viz is by far the weirdest company ever.

Their manga regurally has nudity and yet they remove all the cuss words.

As long as they don't change his attitude, it'll be fine. Big O had all the swearing that was in the sub taken out, but its dub was still flawless, because it made up for it in every way, and was even kinda out of place.

It's not really the "fault" of Viz, but the team behind the dub. Ever see the dub for Key The Metal Idol? That was by Viz and it's dub had a shi..er, buttload of cussing in it. But that's because the team that was behind Key is not behind Inuyasha. So why IY's ADR writer/whatever felt the need to remove all cussing is unknown.

But KingKoopa's right. As long as his attitude remains the same, it should be fine.
