View Full Version : Samurai Jack: What's his fanbase?

A friend and I were just wondering if Samurai Jack has more male or female fans. Because the SJ forum we usually go to is about 90% female populated. But considering that a lot - not all - of us there are Crazy Drooling Fangirls, I can understand why most guys would get chased off, and that's a shame to me. (And I'm sure CDF are not what the creators intended. ...or is it?)

So I was just wondering what the ratio really is. It doesn't really matter to me. A fan is a fan. It's just been in the back of my mind for a while now.

And I'm sorry for posting this in more than one forum if that's not allowed. I just wanted to reach as many of the show's fans as I could, and there's always been a debate as to where posts on the topic belong.

I'm male and I like the show. It obviously has the whole macho-zen thing going. The action is what draws in the guys to the show. Plus Jack, in many ways, is a super hero (better than your average ninja, saves innocents, has an epic quest). This is the stuff little boys carry with them into adulthood.

On the flip side, I've met many girls that have this admiration of strong fictional male characters as well (heck, look at the Lord of the Rings craze). I think this is more of the dreamy side, and much of their like for the show lies in Jack's being himself...the strong, sensetive, caring invidual. Of course this is a guess, and maybe girls like to see fighting action too, who knows...

I've seen most of the Samurai Jack fansites. How many are there? And where are all these cartoon-loving chicks? It's really funny that the two Cartoon Cartoons that are Girl favs are Ed, Edd, and Eddy, and Samurai Jack.

I'm a girl and I like Samurai Jack. The action sequences are cool (even if they're too long sometimes), the animation style is beautiful and origional, and Jack is such a sweetie^_^!

I'm female, but would hardly describe myself as a 'drooling fangirl.' Though I like Jack just fine, I'm equally impressed by this show's variant & excellently-rendered artwork, the impressive soundtracks, and the occasional humor.

I'm male, and I like the show mostly because of the story. It's really good. I also like the art alot. I like watching shows that have an ongoing story, like Samurai Jack and most animes.

There are some fans I know who don't have a major crush on Jack (girls, of course), but they still admire him just because he's...him. :) And yes, they like the action, too.

This one's pretty good: http://www.centerstagemedia.com/samurai/

The ones you mentioned and this one are pretty much the only sites that are ever updated ;) .

I'm one of those Crazy Drooling Fangirls (Fanwoman, technically) that GH knows from the Samurai Site (http://www.anre.org/cgi-bin/all/YaBB.pl#gen)'s forum.
Anyway, I like Samurai Jack particularly for (1) Jack's noble, innocent, imperfect personality, (2) the fantastic artwork, and (3) some of the intriguing storylines. The action isn't a primary attraction, except when it's especially well done, for instance the Robot Marauders episode (XVIII).
The best episodes are when those elements all come together, as in the Three Archers. Or when the writers throw caution to the winds and have some fun--Aku's Fairy Tales (XIII) and The Scotsman's Wife (XVII).
Yes, Jack is terrifically sexy, especially when his kimono comes off. ;) However, few other characters out there are worthy of admiration for their inner goodness and courage as much as for their outward beauty.
('Course, I do normally rave about how yummy Jack is. I wanted to point out that I admire for many other reasons as well. :D )
Peace ~ Donna

Thanks guys! :D The poll's going pretty well, imo, and the results here are about the same in the other forum too. Of course, if you all voted in both, that might explain things. ;) I find it all pretty interesting, if not entirely surprising.
