Shonen Jump arrives! Really! The original comic anthology that printed some of the biggest comics ever created will now show up in the states with a line up of never before printed here stuff... and DBZ (why are the repriniting it in Jump when it's already being reprinted monthly? oh well). As you guessed from the article title, Yu Yu Hakusho will also be reprinted in Shonen Jump (and like every viz manga won't be censored, so don't worry). Also in the anthology will be the uber-popular Yu-Gi-Oh!, Naruto (never heard of it), Shaman King (think Yu Yu only with more focus on humour), and Sandland (finally, an Akira Toryama book to be brought over that isn't Dragonball related. Now bring us Dr. Slump!).

Don't forget that they also plan to include the hugely popular pirate adventure series, One Piece.
Also, this just in from Viz, from a press release on Anime News Service (http://www.animenewsservice.com):
"A unique promotional relationship is also being developed with Cartoon Network. Currently seen in 81.1 million U.S. households and 145 countries around the world, Cartoon Network is the 24-hour ad-supported cable service offering the best in animated entertainment. Showcasing popular titles such as ?DRAGON BALL Z,? ?YUYU HAKUSHO,? Cartoon Network is a leading source of anime in America. Adult Swim, Cartoon Network's weekend late-night block of original comedy and action-oriented cartoons, is dedicated to action on Saturday nights ? featuring several popular anime titles. Users visiting the Web site, Adultswim.com, will be able to sample pages from SHONEN JUMP, view streamed video content associated with the magazine's titles, and have the opportunity to subscribe."
Hrmm an AS and Shonen Jump partnership? That doesn't sound right...

it is kind of when it the magazine's name translates to "Boy's Jump".... it's probably be cool though. The target audiences are similar for both ASA and Shonen Jump, so it works...

Likely the only preview pages you'll see on AS.com are for Yu Yu and One Piece.

Speaking of One Piece, that'd be pretty cool to see somewhere on CN. It's hard to place though...

I'd love to see the YYH manga translated. Glad it's coming over! Now, if only Shonen Jump could bring over Rouroni Kenshin manga and Dr. Slump too! I've seen Dr. Slump translations on the internet, but they take ages to finish translating the next chapters.
One Piece should have its own timeslot on CN, as it won't fit on Toonami and isn't adult enough to belong on Adult Swim.
Will the American Jump have color pages like the Japanese printings have?

Uh... they have color pages? I don't recall seeing those when I was in Japan (in the airport this Winter when on my way home from Thailand, I saw a copy of shonen Jump. They had a few color add pages and original sketches I think but that's it. Most manga is in black and white to my knowlegde. Or am I just misunderstanding something.

I've only read up to Yusuke returning to his body. Without wanting to spoil too much, the manga is very similar to the anime at the start, but a lot more activity goes on before he returns to his body, including in a story where he's resurrected for one day so that his body and spirit don't get too far off track. It's also worth noting that Sayaka is *not* an agent of the spirit world in the manga, but still has an interesting role.
It's also interesting that the American dub apparently *returns* to the original manga titles, which were changed when the cartoon was released into Japan. I would assume that the manga were used to help in the translation process. Gotta appreciate that kind of attention to detail.

Sounds good to me. I liked the start of the series and wouldn't mind reading the manga where they apparantly spend more time with it :)

EinBebop, where'd you get that page from? Is that a fan translation, or something they're actually going to use in Shonen Jump?
There's been some concern over editing in Shonen, and that particular page isn't in the preview issue. If it does end up in the actual magazine, then we shouldn't have as much to worry about.

If they censored, I would be surprized. IU haven't known Viz censor their manga (including Dragonball Z, which is already heavily censored for younger viewers. He'll both DB and DBZ improve ten-fold in manga form IMHO. If they did censor I would be shocked. Also, it's about time their be a WEEKLY manga anthology over here.

You're right, their track record has been pretty good. However, the problem here is that Viz is going to be making a HUGE push to market this mag to pre-teens and teens, and an edited mag would cause them far less trouble than an unedited one. Add to that the fact that neither the website, nor the preview issue says anything about it being unedited nor contains any warnings about content, and you can see why the fear exists.
That said, I've found out that the Dragonball Z manga is apparently going to be moving into Shonen, with no release on its own anymore. If edited suddenly becomes the only way to get it, Viz would have hell to pay. So it really remains to be seen. Until we have word from Viz or a copy of the first issue in our hands, we won't know for sure.

Um, hate to burst your bubble, but the American version of Shonen Jump will be monthly.
Speaking of which, anyone interested in purchasing the mag should go to shonenjump.com (http://www.shonenjump.com) right now and subscribe. You can get a full year's subscription for the discounted price of only $19.95. That's like 12 issues for the price of four! Now that's a deal. And far easier to swallow than Newtype's $90 a year subscription fee.

Darn it! I really was going to start this thread, but you beat me to it! :P
One thing that nobody mentioned is that the press release says that the manga will be unflipped--that is, read right-to-left instead of left-to-right. So that's a very good thing. And I doubt they'll censor the manga, not after the hell Dragon Ball fans gave them.
You see, at first the manga was released completely uncensored. Then, about a year or two ago, some parent was flipping through one of the manga at a Toys R Us and became horrified at what she thought was "inapporpriate smut" (nevermind the fact that she took the scene she was looking at completely out of context) and brought the manga to the store's attention. Toys R Us stopped carrying it, and many other stores followed suit. Before long, Viz had to come to a decision--either continue to release the manga uncensored and lose retailer after retailer (which would really hurt their profits), or censor the manga until the retailers found it appropriate and pick it up again. You can guess which one they picked. The fans got angry, and after many petitions and letters, Viz finally started releasing the graphic novels uncensored (with a disclaimer, of course). I don't know if the monthly manga title is still censored, but the graphic novels aren't--not anymore, anyway.
Getting back on track, I really don't think we have anything to worry about. Viz knows their audience, and I doubt they'll alienate us just to appease to the mainstream. They're not gonna be doing too much tampering anymore (they lost X-1999 twice because of it--in fact, the only manga I can think of that they've really censored was Toshihiro Ono's Pokemon manga, which was basically redrawn by Viz) and I would be more surprised if they DID censor it than if they didn't.

We'll know for sure that the monthly Shonen Jump is uncensored if it has a 13andUp sticker on it, like the way their unedited Dragonball manga is now. If they do decide to censor the monthly anthology, they should atleast restore the edited pages for the graphic novels.
