View Full Version : How I spent my summer vacation

I know vacation threads pop up here from time to time, but I thought it might be fun to start a unofficial offical thread of summer vacation stories. I just got back from one not too long ago, so I will go first!

I went to Minnesota, which I do about every year or so. My trips to Minnesota usually consist of visting family, going shopping, seeing movies, a lot of driving, etc. This time around we sought out some interesting spots, especially around Rochester, home of the Mayo Clinic.

One spot of interest was Mayowood (http://olmstedhistory.com/mayowood.htm) , a mansion built by the founding doctor of the Mayo Clinic and populated by several generations of Mayos thru out the next half century or so. It was quite a stunning site to see, as you can probably imagine. In addition to the mansion, there was a beautiful garden down in a valley and a man made lake further down, but a flood in 1978 destroyed the garden, and the city required the doctors to stop using a dam which created the lake, so the lake will never be again, and the garden still is unrestored to this day due to lack of funding. I learned a few points of interest, such as one of the Mayo doctors lost a daughter when she choked on a piece of candy. Devastated, the doctor purchased a candy factory and pledged to create a candy kids could not choke on, and that's how the Lifesaver candy came to be, the idea with the hole in the center being that if it got lodged in a child's throat they could still get air.

There was also the Plummer House (http://www.best-agent.com/plummer.htm) , which was also used by doctors from the Mayo Clinic, and part of it is still being used by doctors as living quarters, but the main house is open for tours thru the summer. It's on the highest hilltop when you come into the city, and even has its own water tower up there. So if anybody here has to go to Rochester, Minnesota (god forbid it be due to having to go to the Mayo Clinic! :( ) I would recommend these sites. The Plummer House has it's garden restored and still intact and there are several trails and it's incredibly beautiful. There are more Mayo related sites of interest in Rochester that also has tours, which I hope to see on my next visit up there.

I also went to a few movies (I know the conversations about those are better served for the Enertainment Board, so I will keep it short and sweet!), including Men in Black II, Road to Perdition (who said Spider Man was the best comic book movie this summer! Road to Perdition rocked!), Eight Legged Freaks (ugh, awful, IMO), Minority Report, and the Powerpuff Girls Movie!

Another thing that happened out of the ordinary, I went to a store with my mom, and when we were coming out, she heard this dog crying and whining and it was in a car in the hot, sweltring sun. Well, understandably she hates that, a dog can die in a car under those conditions. So she said she was going to wait there until the people came out and tell them off. We stood there for about 15 minutes and no sign of then, and the dogs cries became more desperate and he was trying to climb under the seat, probably to get into shade. So she took him out of the car and got him some ice from her water cup, and we sat with him under a tree in the shade waiting for the people to come out. It had been about a half an hour later and we talked about how the dog would probably be dead if it wasn't for us, and my mom was really not wanting to turn this dog over to these people again, as we doubted they would learn their lesson. So she contemplated taking the dog to a shelter, and did just that.

However, we found out the Humane Society in the neighboring town would not take him since she did not live there. So my mom took him to a friends while we tried to sort out what to do with him. They found a place for him to stay over the weekend, but that didn't last as it wasn't permanent. My mom wants to take him but really can't because she has a Sharpei and this puppy is 6 weeks old and the Sharpei would inevitably kill the puppy. Literally, Sharpei's are territorial animals and don't like new dogs in the house. My sister got the dog for a while til she saw a flyer at the grocery store with the dog's picture and how this dog had been stolen so she didn't want to keep the dog any more. I am not sure what has happened since then, however.

Observations:

1. Dogs can handle a lot. Especially small cute ones.
2. Dogs hate being stuck in unmoving cars.
3. When dogs get bored they get hyper.
4. That was breaking and entering, followed by stealing, followed by dog trading, followed by an extensive coverup.

Someone loved that dog (a little kid, perhaps), or there would have been no poster. Did you try to find the owner?

Wouldn't a better solution have been to go into the store and use the page system to call the owner of the dog? You could even have been humerous...

"Attention. To the owner of a green Ford escort, license number DOGLUV R: Your dog is dead."

If it was a small enough store, you could have gone back in and yelled: "There's a dead dog out there!" or something.

I don't have a problem with liberating the small cute puppy from the car, but just walking off with it...

Sounded like you had a lot of fun Calhoun! But I do have to say that the dog issue needed to have been handled better. I'm a big animal person, and you can bet I would have also gotten the dog out and given it water, but never would I take it with me. The proper thing to do was to call the police to come over because someone left their dog in the car....that's basically illegal if the dog was there for so long in the heat, and the police would have stayed and waited for the people to come back. If there was just one store or something, you should have gone in and asked for whoever owns the car with the dog in it. I'm really surprised things aren't worse, those owners could nail you with stealing their dog from the car, and all you have as testimony for why is because it was hot. You'll get fried for that because any judge would ask you why the heck you didn't call the police to take care of it, or try and find the owners. I understand you mom and you wanted to do the right thing, almost anyone would for an animal, but the steps you took after getting the dog out of the car, in my opinion, just weren't right.

"The dog fell out of the car. By himself. Honest!!" ;)

Hate to say it, but you've gotten yourself in some pretty big crap here. You and your mom could probably lay low and not get caught, but it's your choice...

Wow, that story about the idea behind LifeSavers is cool! Also, props to you and your mom for saving the dog. Dogs should not be left in hot cars, even with the windows cracked, as the temperature inside a car can quickly reach 120+ degrees. IMHO, anyone that would be thoughtless enough to leave a dog in their car in the summer heat obviously has very little sense or regard for the well-being of their pets.

All I can say in response to the dog story, I suggested we just call the police. I wanted to see the people get fined. As for why my mom did what she did, I have no idea, I don't know if she felt they would have treated the dog right if they had to take it into their custody. I can't say I support the decision to take the dog. But all I know is I am not in that state any more, let the police try to find me!

And since then the person has gotten another dog. A girl my mom knows has a boyfriend who works at a store where this lady posted a poster and the next day she had a new dog. I don't know what the mental capacity of this person is, but they spelled "stolen" as "stodden."

But you don't have to tell me what should have been done, I am in total agreement!

You did, though.

I was like "whatever." It was her decision, I suggested to call the police. It was her call. So, no I didn't really. But you know, there are some people you can't change their mind, and my mom is one of them. And just because you can't change their mind means you support everything they do.

Sounds like you had fun, despite the dog issue...I think your mom should've done what The Guard said, put a page over the intercom, and then just stare at the person who came out to check on the dog like they're a criminal or something... and for the rest of the story...I like Lifesavers, both the hard kind and the chewy kind...yummy :D

The intercom suggestion is a great idea, however the people who had the dog did not go into the store we came out of. We had no idea where these people were. This was in a small town, in an alley way behind a block of stores and apartments. They could have been anywhere. (It turned out they went to a cafe to enjoy a good meal.)

I thought they went into a cafe.

So you DID locate them, and didn't confront them with the dog? You knew where these people were...and could have tried to change their ideas about dog treatment (so the next dog they have doesn't get mistreated), or alert the police, and you just ran off with their dog?
