I was reading that alot of you miss the show Cartoon Planet and had asked CN if it was coming back...with no decent response from their end. Well I know why it's not on, and it's not good news. I got to chat a little with Andy Merril once (the guy who does braks voice, and is on the Williams Street staff) and asked him what the chances were for it airing again, he said very slim becuase they lost the rights to the songs that were sung on most of the episodes....my only questionis...did they not write those songs themeselves? I can't imagine anyone else in the world wanting to make claim to owning a song about mashed potatos :p
anyways, if anyone remembers a while back before AS when sgc2c was coming on on friday nights, CN would show little clips from cartoon planet occasionally, well now you also know why they showed clips instead of whole episodes. I assume they still have the rights needed to run those few select clips, but apparently they arenot pursuing to reobtain the rest of the rights...just thought I'd let everyone know.

Hey! You forgot to mention that Andy Meril is the Live Action Space Ghost!

In regards to not having the rights, that's... very interesting.

I can only assume that when they made those Backyard BBQ CDs and soundtracks that they gave up the rights for them. But you know what they say about assuming! I would have thought that Williams would have retained the rights, but perhaps there's a legality clause with that stuff. (I mean they did change thier name a whole back to Williams... But that shouldn't have affected anything!)

That's really all I got.

However truth be told, I can go the rest of my life without hearing the Beans song again.

No, what it is is the background music or "needledrop" music as it's called in the buisness. The music that plays in the background as they sing is what they've lost the rights to.

To get around this for the albums, they rerecorded the orignal pieces in some of the cases and used those but this would not be cost effective for all of them. This is why the less than stellar "Highway 40 Unplugged" was released and "Highway 40" never saw the light of day until it was redone for "Brak Presents the Brak Album Starring Brak."

If it's only the music they don't have the rights to, then they should take all the segments and make a new, improved cartoon planet. They could also make new music you know? Theres an idea!

Now all we need to know is why O Canada is not playing. Someone get on it! I command it! No, I really do command it.

Yeah, they should amke an all new show, it was obviously VERY cheap to make and heck they can use the same crap from the old shows and just make new dialouge and write new songs, or atleast remix the current ones and make new songs too.

As for O' Canada, YEAH GET ON IT !
