so i went to the fair the other day, and i found a copy of the japanies release of Cowboy Bebop:Knocking on Heaven's door. and then i got to thinking, if the U.S. release is going to be in japanese, then why not get the original? so i bought it for the low price of nineteen dollars, quite the deal say i. But more importantly, after watching it, i learned that even if they never dub it in English, its still a great movie. so, i say to all of you, if you can, i advise you get the Japanese version, because it's cool, and if they don't dub it in english, it won't ruin the movie at all. and for tyhose of you who have already seen it in japanese, help me out, and tell all the others how wonderful it is even in japanese... ok. end point being... the movie rocked, even if i had to read the whole time.

Only dumb part was that the 3 old guys were in WW2 which would make them well over 150 unless they were frozen like Faye
And I'll bet my whole anime collection that they do dub it for the DVD release and I'll hold my word on that

I actually like reading subtitles more than watching a dubbed movie. It seems like some times they do a REALLY bad job on dubbing, and, I love to hear the language as it is meant to be heard....I guess I'm a bit of a purist :D

I'll remember this for later on if they keep it English Sub on DVD. ;)

stanteau,
i don't think those guys where really in WW2, i think they where just totally nuts. it was probably supposed to be a joke.
but yeah, reading the subs was pretty neat. and i hope they dub it in english for the US release.
The old guys were nuts. And IF we get a dub cast at all, it won't be the Bandai TV show cast. All the important roles were voiced by non-union VAs, and Columbia/Tri-Star would have a nasty strike if they made a dub with non-union VAs. So hope for a full sub, rather than a half-assed dub by VAs who don't know the characters they way we know them.

I would hope that since it IS dvd and there are alot more options, they would have it both dubbed and subtitled, with a choice between the two. To me, it makes sense.

Look through the old threads -- we've had several explaining why we may not get a dub at all, and that if we do, we're not likely to get the original voice actors back. I pretty much summed it up in the post before yours...

You do realize that what you got was a bootleg, right?

see, i think it is, except it has box art, and the DVD looks authentic. but I'm just going to assume that it is the real deal. because the chick who was selling it ships the stuff over from japan, and she said her family bought them from stores in japan, and besides she had lots of other stuff that was definately not bootleg.

it is still a bootleg no matter what...the difference is that it is probably a Hong Kong dvd or one of the international styled dvd's that they make. considering he was able to watch it on a dvd player means that it was either not region coded (international) or the dvd player he has is a region 1 which i believe plays most dvd regions no matter what.
Yeah, it's a bootleg. They're very professional looking and all, but no major anime release has ever been Reigon 0 -- that should've been your first clue, that you could play what should've been a Region 2 DVD in your Region 1 DVD player. Also, they look professional because they blatantly steal copyrighted artwork for their cases, so that you think it's official. Anyway, you got ripped off, I could've pointed you to places on the web selling the same exact thing you got for $2. Also, note that no official release would have Chinese subtitles as well =P

This quote just in from Anime Expo (CPM's meeting):
"The BAAF will also have the premiere of the English dub of the Cowboy Bebop movie"
No word on the voice actors involved but it should put to rest the question of "IF". For anyone that doesn't know BAAF = "Big Apple Anime Fest". It's taking place over Labor Day Weekend this year :)

Well.. considering the DVD was released in only ONE region so far, thats Japan, Region 2. And That release DID NOT have ANY Subtitles. So you've got yourself a 100% Bootleg.

dude,it's a bootleg.I have a stack of 'em.They are professionally printed and pressed but it is a bootleg. It's the same as someone making a professional burn of a CD.It's just copyright laws are flimsy at best on China (where HK DVD's come from) so companies can get away with it.

Thank you, Vince. Dear lord, I hope it's the right cast.

Don't you understand? If your film had English subtitles, it was a bootleg. There are no official versions of the movie that have English subtitles, except the film print that Columbia put out; they haven't put out any DVDs of that yet. The Japanese version certainly doesn't have English subtitles - why would it? It's for Japanese audiences, not English ones. And even if it did, you would need a region 2 DVD player to watch it.

Actually I believe the official Jpn DVD does gave english subs. That's an ongoing trend as the FLCL DVD's and the new Slayers boxsets have had english subs and if I remember correctly the Bebop movie does as well,I'll go look around to be sure.

Heh all we're trying to say is bootlegs suck, and you should've at least known that you were buying something that was illegal. And I know the one he picked up, just from the way he described it, it has a different cover than the one you showed stanteau... I'll try to dig up a link.

Bullcrap.
People don't need bootlegs to know about whats new, there is this thing called "The Internet" where people can go and find information on new shows.

I know for a fact that the Knockin' on Heaven's Door doesn't have English subtitles (I asked someone who owns the disk a while back).
Interesting that some of FLCL has English subtitles, though. I wasn't aware of that.

Bootlegging is wrong because people make money off of something they have no right to. It's called "stealing". Just my opinion.
And you know what would be great? If, at the BAAF, we see that the CB has the original dub and is still titled KOHD and all us fans of the show were just presumptuous. That would rock. But it probably ain't happening.

I'm worried about the dub, but I'm far from thinking that it's set in stone that they'll pick the wrong cast. On the other hand, I'm one of those people who was sure that CN would give ReBoot a good turn sooner or later, and look how wrong I was there. . .

Yeah, I think everyone forgot about that. I guess the Japanese version of CB: KOHD would be great seeing that it's the original one.

True. I stopped buying bootlegs because of the web. I rely more on Internet than bootlegs to tell me which anime is good.

The dub of the movie will probably change. I'm starting to accept this possibility. However, I hoped I am wrong. Period.

um...you do realize that more often then not the titles that are indeed bootlegged material, again more often then not, are in Engrish. engrish is a category of language in which asian people have tried to translate dialogue into english but given that we have a different snytex in speech and even different word base it comes out all wrong. just thought i would let you all know.

I see it like this: if the movie doesn't come ou before the bootleg, buy the bootleg.
BUT when the movie DOES come out, buy the real one, if not just to compare differences.
I know if I went somewhere, like a "Flea Market", and found KOHD at say $5.00 VHS or $9.00 DVD, I'd buy it, no matter what it was. Why, 'cause I'm cheap. However, I'm hoping the "true" american verion comes out soon, because I really want to see the DVD for its' extras....plus, it lasts longer!
Understand that some people can't import the japanese version and some of these "specialty stores" that already have it charge an arm and a leg for a copy(last time I checked, it was $55.99 for the import DVD.)
And the "engrish" thing?(it actually has a name?!?) That's what happens when people decide to rush things and why it's important to check your sub's back cover before buying....

Not really,Hell I bought a ripped Ranma seaosn 7 for $8 not to long ago.I don't ahve nearly enough money to buy a whole set of DVD's.I have tons of movies but not series.
And I buy fansubs, not HK DVD's.I have a few of stuff I normally can't find (such as GTO) but 99.9% of my stuff is just CD-R fansubs.
