We've been sitting infront of a bright glowing screen watching Goku and the other Z-fighters bashing eachothers heads in on DBZ, totally neglecting characterization and the purpose of the show(the DRAGONBALLS...they still do exist...) for several years, and we've gotten sick of it. Sure, the kids still like to watch muscle-bound freaks grunt and punch eachother, and spend entire episodes "powering up"...but...we needed something more...
YuYu Hakusho. A series that has plenty of Characterization, a cool story, fun episodes, and the occasional "beat 'em up" episode. And even the "beat 'em up" episodes are still enjoyable.
Pretty much the most of the series that we have seen so far, focused on Yusuke being dead, & trying to 'get back'. Through this, we saw what kinda person he was, and who he'll become. We also meet his friends & enemies, and I personally loved the great amount of characterization being used, knowing the series would eventually dive into some good action.
Eventually, Yusuke took on his first case, he did a little detective work, and ended up hunting down the baddies, fought them for an episode, with the good little twists and turns that we never got from other fighting series. Then the whole training thing, which was a lot more enjoyable than any DBZ tournament thing. And I really liked the fact that fights lasted 1-per-episode. Maybe it'd draw into a second episode, but it didn't last 2 full episodes.
Now, we have our team of 4, finally joined, and they're battling these beast thingies. Kurama's battle was one ep, and it was an enjoyable one. Then, Kuwabara's fight lasted 2 episodes, and everyone has a hissy fit? Why? While Byakko is kinda a crappy baddy, I loved the whole "he wont give up" thing...no matter how much they tried to help, Kuwabara was to stubborn and dumb. It had a change of pace. And Hiei's fight had the best animation of any of the fights so far, so if anyone complains...screw you.
A fighting series with the characterization and plot that we've been needing after the disappointment DBZ turned into. Thank Koenma for YYH... :D

Plenty of characterization? Yeah, I suppose you could say that. They really do shove the personalities of characters like Yusuke, Kuwabara and Koenma down our throat so we really get to know them well. But characterization doesn't equal character development.

Most? 5 out of 18 episodes. Thats hardly 'most'.

Yes, thats what I liked about the start of the show. Unfortunately, they've thrown all that was good about the show into the garbage so we can have more action shoved down our throats, incidently enough, just like Dragonball Z. Which is why the comparisons are made.

What are you talking about? DBZ has plenty of plot twists, many just as good as ones in YYH. From bad guys becoming good guys (Kurama/Vegeta & Piccolo & Yamcha) to bad guys being killed by their own allies (Byakko/Nappa), there's little in there that 'we never get from other fighting series'
Then the whole training thing, which was a lot more enjoyable than any DBZ tournament thing. And I really liked the fact that fights lasted 1-per-episode. Maybe it'd draw into a second episode, but it didn't last 2 full episodes.
Yes, I would say a lot more enjoyable than DBZ, but because the ones in DBZ are so bad. Sure as hell was nothing interesting about the Genkai tournment after the first episode and there's been little of interest in the latest story arc. And Byakko was 2 whole eps btw :p

Because it was a dull, predictable fight with Kuwabara acting like an idiot. And just like in DBZ, you have the bad guy talking and talking and talking... ad nauseum until you wonder when they'll just start fighting!!!! -_-

I'd say the series started off pretty good, but has quickly descended into something thats little more than a fastly paced DBZ without all the filler. Not deserving of a spot on the block if you ask me. Now I certainly hope I'm mistaken, and the show makes a serious turnaround after this story arc is finished. But there's been little there to give me hope for well over a month now.

all i can say about that is...wait until later in the series. if you dont like fights going over 5-7 episodes (or more), you'll be disspointed (i *think* the fight with Toguro was more than 7 eps).
the only difference between Yu Yu and Dbz is that theres more story in yu yu (the story in yu yu is more interesting)
btw, yu yu is 112 episodes long, do you really think that almost all of it will have 1-2 episode long fights? or all the peisodes will have characterization?

the next story arc (i think it starts at ep. 26...) is the Dark tournament saga (according to funi). its very similar to the 'world's martial arts tournament' in dbz, or its a lot longer version of Genkai's tournament

I don't mind a show being mostly action or fighting, but it has to be good action. My biggest gripe with YYH so far is that the "fights" just aren't very entertaining. It's all just one lame gimmick after another. At least in DBZ they actually fight each other (when they finally get to it, that is).

I actually got interested in YYH though a friend of mine who was in love with the Charactor known as Kurama. At first i was like sure whatever, here we go another soda tab to stuff into her bra along with Zechs and Tuxido Mask. (we had a thing where we would pull the tabs off soda cans and the letter of the alphabet we landed on had to be the first letter in the name of a Anime guy or Bishonen. But i came across others that liked Kurama and got to see past the pretty face and into the complex charactor that was just trying to find decent people he could trust as friends. So when I happen to be surfing the toob one saturday night Who should go running across the screen, none other then Kurama himself followed closely behind by Kuwabara. And ever since I have been avidly watching, one because i look endlessly for my favorite Fox and also I am cought in the story.

I don't understand why people are bashing the two shows. I think they have similar stories at first (main character dies in the beginning and later goes to train with an elder) but then they arc into completely different stories. Yes, the fighting styles are similar and that's about the only similar thing so far.
I think the main difference might be how each show handles the main story. Each has a main story and comedy but handles it in a different way. DBZ has the main story and a side comedy story in each episode (opposite of Tenchi Muyo,IMO) whereas YYH put more story in their episode and puts a joke in there every now and then. The only episodes I've seen of YYH and DBZ are the ones they showed since they started it (in other words, I'm watching DBZ for the first time since May) so I don't see how people can say the shows are all fighting and nothing else.
Anyway, I like both shows because of the similar fight style (it's fantasy so it works), and then to see how they branch out afterwards.
Why like YYH?
Good characters, good story, good fun.
Although the storyline right now still doesn't dwell too much on the character's past, we'll get a chance to see it fleshed out in later storylines (according to the manga version, that is)
So far, I like all the characters in YYH: Especially Kuwabara with Hiei in second. Why Kuwabara? He's the weakest one in the group, but he's the only pure human in the group, Hiei and Kurama is a demon, and Yusuke is a halfbreed demon and besides, he's the only one of all four who was a punk but in the future graduated from university and got a good job.
Hiei is just plain EVIL cool.
So far the action has also been cool and fun to watch at the same time.
DBZ had good characters - Goku, Bejita, Yamcha, Tien, Pikorro; it's just that on later episodes they just don't use them anymore and instead rely more on Super Saiyans getting much stronger and much more boring, escpecially after the Freeza saga. I've always liked Dragon ball and Dragon ball Z (especially the manga, which is much better than the anime - faster pacing), but the turn to just going Super Saiyan all the way just makes the series much boring than watching a turtle march (at least a turtle is making a progress with every step).
Fortunately, YYH(the manga version that is) doesn't go into the same path. The next storyline -Yukina's storyline has a great deal of information about Hiei's background and reasons for his actions. The Yukina's storyline is also one of the first times we'll see the cruelty of the YYH world if the anime version allows it, though...
The tournament - although quite like the DBZ tournament, will sport exceptionally cool storyline concerning the characters of YYH - Yusuke, Kuwabara, Hiei, Kurama including Genkai herself, and their opponents. The tournament is also the step into the darker, more demented world of YYH.
Those who like Kurama will see a very cool storyline about Kurama here. Hiei? You got it. Yusuke? Heh, a lot. Kuwabara? As usual... Genkai? A lot also. The opponents? enough to make you at least care or hate their guts even more.
How about the fights and action? It just gets cooler everytime...
After the tournament, the storyline will even go into the darker path, which if I say anything about it may spoil the series. But basically, after the tournament the series(the manga version of course) rely more on its storyline rather than action. And the story just gets more and more serious, more demented.more EVIL, and darker.
PS: But of course, all of this is based on the manga version...
