Got a package in the post this morning... a little box containing 6 idodine tablets to help combat radiation sickness.
Every house in this country is getting a pack through the post over the next two weeks, big writing on the box warning us to keep them in a safe place.
About a week after September 11th, the Irish Minister for Defense was interviewed on radio about this country's emergency plans in case of a terrorist attack. After about 5 minutes of dodging the question he finally admitted that no such plan was in place... Ireland would be totally unprepared for anything like that. ( And our armed forces are so small they amount to nothing )
So since then, several plans have been rushed through the Dail ( our parliament ), the distribution of radiation tablets being just one of them.
We also got a booklet through the post telling us what to do in case of an attack on the UK ( radiation would certainly come across the sea )
Scary stuff... I just hope I never have to use them.

I saw on the news the past few days that people living within a ten mile radius of the San Onofre (sp?) nuclear power plant in Southern California will be distributed with sodium idodide pills to combat radiation too. It's one of the sites suspected to be a terrorist target. :(

I'm glad they are not wasting our taxpayer money on giving out these tablets to every American. You know how much of our money that would cost. If you live next to a nuclear plant sure but, contrary to popular belief, terorists will never use nukes or nuclear material on us they wont and they cant.

I heard about those radiation taablets a couple months ago on the radio. i don't know, maybe the government has had those things for a while, but i don't know whether to believe the claim or not.

i'm glad the US isn't giving it to every citizen, either, because I've heard it only works if you're within a certain mile radius, and if you're closer, oh well. but things i hear in the news aren't newsworthy anymore, the broadcaster friggin told us ambulances and other emergency vehicles might be used in the terrorist plot.

i also have to agree with Vash, I doubt nuclear plants are a good enough target to use. it's just another way for the media to stir up panic. =\
