It's not that great a trailer. It lasts about 30 seconds and most of the footage is from the TV show.

I have all the North American news for Cowboy Bebop consolidated here:
http://www.jazzmess.com/sessions/kohd.html
Also, both the teaser trailer (the one that appears on the Metropolis DVD) and the full trailer are there for download if you want to see them. One wierd thing about Metropolis' version of the trailer: if you look closely at it, you'll see that Columbia/Tristar has blotted out the English words "Knockin' on Heaven's Door." This could mean that they're worried about the rights to that name, and that they're going to release it as "Cowboy Bebop: the movie" or something. . . and that would suck. :p

If Dylan can allow Guns And Roses to do that lame-ass cover of "Knocking on Heavens Door", he can sure as hell let Bebop use the song as a subtitle. Or, at least, I hope so.

I don't think permission applies, you just have to pay ASCAP or somebody for it. I can't remember. Besides, I don't think the title would be protected, things are published with the same title all the time. Even if they do have to change it, I suppose that's pretty acceptable as changes go.

What's Metropolis? Is an anime movie?

If I can just penetrate that grammar...
Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis is Japanese animated feature film, released in US theaters last year and on DVD this April. Tezuka is better known for creating such characters as Astro Boy and Kimba, the white lion.
The style of Metropolis is very old-school. It strongly echoes the old Fleicher Betty Boop and Popeye cartoons in terms of character design and movement, but at the same time it is very sophisticated in terms of its technical execution.

The anime Mertopolis is based on a classic 1920s or 30s film called Metropolis. In fact, the old Metropolis is credited with inspiring the way Frankenstein was portrayed in films. If you can find it (it's rare), Metropolis is one of the greatest movies of all time (the movie, not the anime) and definitely worth watching.
As far as the anime goes, I was sorely dissappointed. I thought the animation was subpar, but the CG was excellent. The two just didn't mesh well. In addition, the plot and the voice acting seemed strained and neither even had a moment of glory. The worst part about Metropolis is that it attempt to deal with sentience within an electronic being, which is a very hard thing to deal with in 2 hours. While it can be forgiven for biting off more than it can chew, it still doesn't even compare to Ghost in the Shell, which dealt with same issues.
Even after all my complaints, I still think it's a cool flick to watch and I own it on DVD.

EDIT: Sorry. One of my film and anime buff friends had told me it was based on the old film. We've been trying to see the old one, but haven't been able to find a copy to see, though.

The use of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" as the title is a simple cultural reference, so I doubt any royalties will have to be paid.
As for the anime Metropolis... it isn't at all based on the 1927 Fritz Lang film. Some imagery is borrowed, and the name of the anime is a blatant reference to it, but the story is fundamentally different, and is actually based on Osamu Tezuka's classic manga.

thanks for pointing that out...i was afraid i would have to really rip into someone.
just some Metropolis issues before i get into Knocking on Heaven's Door. First, i thought the movie was very well done and executed quite well even though Tezuka is probably rolling in his grave over the fact that Ottoma put the story onto celeliod. Second, the animation and character designs, although different were very well done and absolutly beautiful. and lastly...i think they touched on the whole aspect of a human soul in a mechanical body as well as A.I. had done. GitS was simply done for that whole purpose in mind of relating that image and idea while Metropolis was also a really entertaining movie in the same instance.
now that i have stated my opinions on such a thing, time to get down to buisness on KoHD. first of all...it didnt make nearly as much money as the creators wanted it to make...as a matter of fact they had to release it in theaters twice for it to make enough money for them to break even on the whole deal. i thought the fight scenes, especially the fight sequence between Vincent and Spike were amazing and blow everything that had ever come before in the series out of the water. the down side to the whole thing though is that it was estentially a two hour long episode of Bebop, and while i have no problem with that i think they could have done something a little better with what they had in the story already, possibly doing a movie on what Spike was into before "dying" and joining up with Jet. i would have enjoyed it much more to see the whole Spike and Red Dragon Clan affair.
any rate...this has just been a posting of some new information and my opinions.
thank you for this space.
