View Full Version : Anime on Comedy (A what if... post)

I know it may never happen (and that a simalar post was probably up earlier) and probably doesn't need to but what anime do you think would be good for comedy. Here are some of my suggestions (with some descriptions):
Excel Saga: The full title is actually Weird Anime Excel Saga, and who am I to argue. The series is an insane spoof on Just about every anime under the sun, and then some! The main character (the hyperactive and loyal Excel) is smitten by her boss Il Palazzo and wants to help his organization, ACROSS, conquer the world. Unfortunately this Organization consists of her, an alien princess who constantly dies and Il Palazzo. But she would do anything for the extremely aloof super-villain (the best is whenever Excel goes on a mission, he's usually learning to play the guitar or playting romanced based RPGs). And though she's the main character, there are tons of other characters, including the mysterious Nabeshin (imagine Lupin the 3rd's body with Spike Speigel's head), the next door neighbors (who end up working for a weird organization), and the ghost of forgeign worker Pedro, who's quest to return to life ends up becoming a bizarre DBZ parody). I don't know where to begin but every genre get parodied. In fact, there's a hentai spoof never shown on TV, and considering their messed up T&A&cute animal special they did, that's probably a good thing. This would definately be TV MA on this, so if it was, they'd only have to take out the suggested rape scene (it's more humour than it sounds but no less disturbing) and the Pedophile scientist (that guy's creepy) and it could probably make it on. You got to love a show wheree the result of going "Super-Saiyin" in this is just getting a big Spike Speigel afro that doesn't give you any more power.
Sexyt Commando Masaru: Don't let the title fool you: they really wouldn't have to do any editing for this show except for the foul language. But you can't much more bizarre than this series (each episode is 12-minutes too). It's a show that you will either love or hate, in both cases immensely, but I love it). Fumin goes to his new high school hoping to make 100 new friends but makes the wrong first "Friend": Masaru, the weirdest guy in school, who's obsessed with facial hair, is polite and rude at the same time and is subject to sudden changes in attitude. To fit in with his character, he studies a martial art that is as wild and unpredictable as him. Masaru studied almost every form of martial art, but after finding a strange manga and some rings in the woods, he trained in the art of... THE SEXY COMMANDO! It is designed to throw you're oppenent off guard by doing competely stupid and bizarre things to disctract your foes like pulling down you're pants or a substitution techinque where nothing is substituted: it's just the fighter whering a bunny costume. Masaru is able to create a Sexy Commando club at school, even though it seems the only person who's heard of the sexy commando is Masaru... until the poorly disguised principle comes along. It... just... gets... weirder.
Any other suggestions or ideas?

Maybe this isn't what you talking about but I have watched the first two volumes of GTO and it's funny as hell, but it will be a long time before they show the whole series in the U.S.
It's like Destiny vs. Dynasty. Us being Destiny (Nets) and them being the Dynasty (Lakers) - Jason Kidd on the NBA finals

I haven't seen GTO yet but from what I heard, it's a comedy. As long as it's a comedy of some kind.

Golden Boy is pretty funny and it's definitely "adult," although it's only 6 episodes. They could probably do an AS Special for it or something.
Puni Puni Poemi is also hilarious (it's a spinoff OVA of Excel Saga), but I doubt it could air on AS even with editing.

Yeah, Puni Puni Poemi is a pretty messed up spoof of magical girl series. Plus it's only one or two episodes long.

Fruits Basket would be cool. The amount of editing needed would be minimal and it's got a lot of comedy, but with a dash of action and drama on occasion too. It'd be a nice show to run at the end of ASC.

I'm not familiar with much comedy anime, but I would welcome it with open arms to ASC. That is, as long as it's not Hamtaro.....

Hmmm... Comedy.
I guess I always found Sorceror Hunters to be funny, in that "Shut your brain off" sort of way. And to get really oddball, I always thought Dragon Half was funny as well.
But then I openly admit my tastes in humor is odd. (After all I found the Exorcist funny.)

well Excel Saga would be an interesting decision but i think it would be a little to out there for most people. between the obscure references that litter the entire series, to those parody episodes that relate to japanese culture, to just the ultimate weirdness this anime has integrated into every single episode, it would be to much. i dont think there would be too much to cut for content but im afraid most of the jokes would be lost on the current viewers.
GTO would be interesting as well but i think they would need to edit this one for content and that would destroy the series as a whole. most of the time Onizuka is thinking perverse thoughts of his students and then there are the ways the students try to get rid of him, dont make me bring up the fourth episode. either way i feel this show would be a hit, if they changed nothing with it.
Golden Boy is a nice little OAV and Kintaro Oe is someone to try to be like, hey he is my personal hero. unfortunatly the adult content in this show would send out a really bad impression to all those parents that think their kid is watching "just cartoons".
Sorcerer Hunters...your on the right track with this one but it fits better on the ASA section of AS over the comedy section. as would probably SMJ.
some ones i can think of that would be good for ASC? Love Hina is one. Maison Ikkakou is another. Ranma 1/2 would be cool to see on the station but with to many edits later on for a topless girl-type Ranma (not to mention Akane, Shampoo, and others) that some of it would be butchered to the censors. Ping Pong Club would be another good one but again the censors would chew this one up.
overall i think that there are a few availible that would make interesting selections but nothing that would survive a censor cut.
standards on american tv wont allow it.

I'd like to see Ranma 1/2, and Maison Ikkakou as well. But your right, Ranma would constantly be edited, not that the nudity in there is sexual or anything, it is sometimes, plus Ranma just doesn't care that he is a girl or not.
I thought the Slayers was pretty funny, but then that would more like go onto the action block, if it weren't for the fact that Fox didn't have the rights to the show.
Hmmm...
You all may be tired of hearing it, but Bandai did say they were selling Love Hina and it would fit very well. However, the English VAs are too terrible for it to work.
I agree, Excel is a bit too strange. Haven't seen Sexy Commando.
Ranma 1/2, for the last time, will never air on American television. At all. End. It's built on nudity and now it looks old to boot.
Jubei-Chan is one of the funniest shows I've ever seen, but honestly it'd do better on Toonami as an heir to the Tenchi dynasty. And no editing required!
GTO is very funny, but have you seen the fifth episode? There is NO WAY that is airing on American television. In a million years. EVER. People are paranoid enough about child molestation as it is, no network is going to buy a show with a hero like Onizuka.
How about NieA Under 7? That show doesn't get enough props in my book. It's actually very funny. Very simple, gentle, even, but very well done. Its relaxed pace would make a good break from the sometimes relentless Williams Street onslaught. To top it off the dub is even better than the subtitled version. The Japanese cultural references are all very general and can be learned from context.
I'm trying to think of others but I'm coming up short. A lot of anime comedy is totally unfunny.

I think Ranma can still hold up animation wise and I think it can be edited.Just extend towels, put some bras here and there, have Ranma wear an undershirt, etc.

I agree; I think Ranma holds up just fine. And it's a gutbuster laugh-wise (especially season 1)! :D
Just do some of your digital voo-doo and I don't see why it couldn't air on late night in America.

Hrm...I'd like to see Metal Angel Marie (or, for you sub-fans, My Marie) on Adult Swim. There's only 3 episodes, so, it'd be a special or some sort. The only edits they'd really have to do would be putting the happy little digital bikini on Marie when Hiroshi is building and working on her. And the scene where the Hibiki is trying to seduce Hiroshi would have to be edited...its a little...strange. In fact, they probably wouldn't even air the last episode. (It's not really important) and the dialog and scenes with Marie and Marie at the end probably would have the censors twitching. But other wise, it'd make a cute little Adult Swim special in my opinion. Funny and cute.
Never seen Marie.
I simply cannot see Ranma working on AS. It's a childish show (even if it's hilarious for six or seven episodes) with too much integral nudity and Japanese cultural references to work. Plus the dub ain't exactly brilliant. But I guess we need to chalk this one up to severe difference of opinion.

Dude, that dub is godly IMO and the cultural stuff was no problem for me and Ranma was my first
Anywho the nudity can be painted over. There's some instances like where Akane grabs Ranma's unclothed breats which may pose a problem but given the stuff in Mission Hill,it could go on 12 with a TV14 with no problem.
I think Love Hina would be a good choice.

Excel Saga, Golden Boy, Slayers, Love Hinta, and GTO! W00T!!! :D
(It would be even worse if they added the anime to AS that my character comes from! ;) :o  )
I think a good show that has a lot of action but also humor (although sometimes quite corny) is Trigun. Sure, it's one you've gotta stick with, but the end of the show definitely tends to make fans out of anyone who stuck through it all.

Nin-Nin reminds me of some idea Jim Henson regected while he was stoned in a sushi bar. I don't know where they found Bat Mackeral, but his wild voice gave Nin-Nin his muppet character. I hate that silly anime execpt for Nin-Nin and his perveted actions. Too bad they couldn't make a manga or anime just on him. He would be like Kintaro Oe, but smaller, in a ninja costume, and less intelegent. (God why am I talking about stuff like this. :o )
Heheh you know Nin-Nin had a sex scene in the Japanese version that's been edited out of all the American releases because of child porn laws, right? Also, those laws have been changed regarding animation by the Supreme court, but I think the American anime companies won't be changing their editing policies in the near future (even the "Director's Cut" of Kite still has edits...)

Akai raped Sawa but in the uncut Sawa seems to go along with it providing almost no struggle.Really ruins it IMO.Plus there's a scene in the edit where she turns down Akai's offer for sex where in the uncut she agrees willingly,IMO this makes it seem like Sawa likes having sex with Akai.Gimme the US edit anyday.
Anyway Trigun's appeal alludes me.The beginning is just NOT funny.I remember my one friend wanted to watch it form the beginnign but I inistsed oin just wathcing Wolfwood's intro than skipping to 12.He watched Wolfwood's intro episode and just said "man, this is BAD" and the ending is just too little too late. The GHG were made to be complete pansies by the lack of blood and onscreen deaths and the ending was complete crap. The fight was good until they just traded angel arm blasts over and over.A mediocre end to a mediocre series IMO.

Really now? Thats something I never would've guessed. But thats not a good enough excuse. Look at all those hentais out with child pornagraphy and incest. I would prefer Nin-Nin as a comicial figure who dosen't get any sex. Yet do you know of any sources that I could find more info on this? As for Yellow Star/Kite I wouldn't complain too much over stuff like that. I aint no hentai fanatic, but certain characters from these cartoons could make a sucessful career on their own with their own dumb antics.

Well, this board is supposed to be PG-13, while the others are PG. If you want to start a thread just to talk about hentai, that sounds like a no-no. But, I don't see a problem with mentioning rape and sex in a thread like this so long as nobody goes into any graphic details. Just be careful about what you say and how you say it.

I don't know. I though the part she tried to shoot the guy and kept missing untill she hit that bomb he had was pretty funny. Otherwise it should serve no interest to anyone.
(I think its best we get back onto topic again and discuss matters like this elsewhere. ;) )
I like Yellow Star... bought that stupid Cool Devices set just for it.
But unedited (have the region 2) Kite is incredible. There's SOOOO much plot behind the sex, and I think people fail to realize that. On that subject, Sakura Diaries, the new DVD set that is unedited, is SOOOO much better also after they fixed the subs and took out all the stupid edits.
I HATE american anime editors. Why is it they assume adults can't handle animated nudity? What puritanical silliness...

How can ANYONE enjoy that trash of the unedited Kite? There's so much unneeded sex.Like when Sawa's falling, just 2 random people.IT's pathetic. And the stuff with Akai and Sawa ruins the plot.Maybe I'm alone but to me it seemed Sawa wanted to have sex with him, even as a kid.She actually lowered herself onto him and didn't struggle even in the least.Than later on,towards the beginning of the movie/OVA Akai asks in she wants to have sex (while she's older). In the US version she simply declines his offer. To me this obviously showed sheisn't a slave to him.In the unedited version, she graciouslly accepts and we get yet another stupid sex scene where it again seems she's enjoying herself.I can go on and on for more but I'll stop.
And the Sakura Diary edits aint even that bad. They cover up the main girls breasts (forget her name) and change a few panty jokes, people get to ****in uptight about edits in anime.

There's a Region 1 director's cut of Kite available (the only cuts are the most heinous of the 'child porn' related ones) and there's also an R1 sub-only release of the uncut Sakura Diaries (the original release used the Japanese TV version not the Japanese video version)
(sorry this old post got dredged up, I lost track of it)
I agree there is a LOT of unneeded sex in Kite...
The real editing nightmare was that by taking out EVERY sexual instance in the show, the relationship between Sawa and Akai made no sense whatsoever.
I mean, why, if she knew Akai killed her parents, would she stay with him and do his dirty work? The reason is he raped her as a child, and bent her to his will, eventually making her little more than a sex toy and a killing machine. That plot line is COMPLETELY lost in the original release, however.
As far as Sakura Diaries go, I'm not a huge fan of nudity being edited out, but it also wasn't something I was extremely angry about either. What bothered me (as I speak a passable amount of Japanese) was the RIDICULOUS sub that the original 4 DVD set had. I mean, the dub was, of course, horrendous, but they didn't get CLOSE to translating the Japanese track right, but the new 2-disc set got it pretty much right.
In the end, I'd prefer EVERYthing we get to be unedited... go to www.animeprime.com if you want to know whether any anime you've bought has been edited, it's a good and informative read.

Oh please,it was beyond obvious he raped it.It was more obvious in the edit. All we see in the edit is him pulling down her panties while she looks scared to death. That inmples real rape.In the uncut I seriously thought she WANTED to have sex with him.No fight,no nothing. She actually LOWERED herself onto him, that was just stupid.****,Cool Devices has more believable rape.
As for Sakura Diaries, the bad trans. didn't bother me that bad.The panty joke edit was a little uncalled for but understandable considering the girls age but I've seen a LOT worse translations. You can't believed how uber-pissed I still am at ADV how they ruined the Rei-Shinji relationship.
