Do avatars have effect on the way you're treated? What do you think?

Of course not.

Not at all, but then again, I suppose it depends on how seriously avatars are taken. Personally, I form opinions on how much I like forum-users (of any forum, mind you) by how their actual "personality" is displayed; not random pictures displayed on the left of the screen.

But that's just me.

Same here, I also see avatars as a way to put a face on different people. That is how I mistake genders sometimes.... but oh well. I try not to put random pics up, all my avatars reflect an interest of mine.

EDIT: to answer the original q... no, I don't think so...

Sort of...because a lot of people probably mistake me for a guy because I always have either a Joker or Vegeta avatar.

I'm a girl though. ;)

I think the only effect avatar has over how posters are treated is people using the avatar as a way to guess gender

I use avatars that reflect my personality, but I try to avoid using male-oriented ones so people won't mistake me for a boy. But I guess the name "Elven Moon" gives it away somewhat ;)

Well, when I tell people that I draw my own avatars, I get a heck of a lot more respect. ;)

(BTW.... :D)

Some people have a running joke about me because I put my photo up once. :P

I don't think so. But it can be confusing. I use whatever avatar I feel like. I'm quite sure people mistake me for a guy with the name and avatar and all. But other than the gender thing I don't think people really care all that much.

Hmm... That's strange. I guessed right off that you're a girl. Still, I don't think that avatars have any effect at all. If it did, you'd all hate me by now considering I change my avatar about every two weeks. Your user name, however, is a different story. How many times (and I fall into this camp on both ends) does someone new show up with a "Dragon Ball Z", Adult Swim Comedy ("Auqa Teen Hunger Force", "Space Ghost Coast To Coast", and "Home Movies" mainly) or an "Invader Zim" (like me) inspired user name and the collective board rolls it eyes and says "Oh, God. Not another one"? I'm not saying this is bad however. This is the most literate (as in well spoken, good grammar, etc) and nicest board I have ever seen. Being a tad judgemental at the beginning doesn't turn us into this (http://www.audiogalaxy.com/pages/thread.php?&t=20729039). Heck, when I saw Psycho Fox's user name for the first time, I thought of the crappy Sega Master System game from the 80's that I hate oh so much. After conversing with everyone, however, those minute prejudices disappear. And if they don't, then this board turns into this (http://www.audiogalaxy.com/pages/thread.php?&t=20644919), and none of us want that, right?

Well, I could call you "SpongeBobbi", if you'd like...might make you feel a bit more feminine.... ;)
I use girly avvys from time to time...but let's be honset, with a handle like "Belch", no one will mistake me for a lassie. Some think I'm crass, but...actually, they aren't far from wrong.
Not to mention I get a lot of compliments on certain pics I use--the more exotic the beter...

Hey the game is not that bad so he took a while to run fast making long jumps more diffuclt and to stop fast you have to push the pad in the the opposite direction. It was not as bad as say Moonwalker

Well, ever since I've been here, I've been using nothing but Kiyone avatars. This is because I love Kiyone to death.

I'm suprised nobody has mistaken me for a girl yet. But then again, I keep saying that I'm married to Kiyone, so that would imply that I'm a guy. Plus the name Dark Spider sounds like a guy's name anyway.

But I do sometimes use avatars to add a face to some people. For instance, for a long time I kept mistaking Squall for a girl because of his avatar of a VERY beautiful girl (I think its Rikku from Final Fantasy 10). But now I know the horrible truth.

Also RogueMartian has a cool avatar of Mewtwo and I kept mistaking her for a boy because of that and her username.

Toonzone should have some kind of identifier under the avatar that tells us whether the person is male or female. It would be a lot easier than playing the guessing game with people.

Yhea should be a pull down menu for the control panel so you can chose Guy, Gal or Other

The first time I saw you I thought you where a girl. I just don't mention gender all that much, so I never called you a girl.

Also, I had a Botan Avatar for a while, and was a little curious If people thought I was a girl.

I would wager... yes. I had a couple people take my "Cowboy Flash" way too seriously. They took offense in it becaue he was smoking, even though it was just a big joke! Other then that I do tend to get positive feedback from 'em. Which I appreciate greatly! :)

I happened to like Moonwalker. Okay, it did disturb me a bit when he would grab himself and the screen would clear, and the whole "turn into a mech" thing never made much sense, but still... :)

I admit, I form opinions often based on avatars and user names from shows I either dont like, or don't care about. In my defence, I don't do it consciously, it's just an automatic impulse.

Avatars don't make a difference for me, although I think I may be the only person who is typecasted by his avatar. I tried to change it to Peter Parker once and it caused alot of confusion and I changed it back. I had that Peter Parker avatar for about ten hours. But I really like my avatar and I'll be sticking with it for along time to come...

I don't think anyone (here) has taken any of my avatars seriously. Which is a good thing, or else you'd have to keep on your guard and watch for pouncing tigers. :D

Still having the background music from Jacksons early hits is kinda cool.

I'm going to take that like a joke just like my avatar was!! ;) Heck, they're all a joke. Just look at my current one! I put a stinkin’ dunce hat on my head! The only avatar, I have had, that wasn't a joke, was probably my "Patriotic Flash."

Avatars give me a decent starting point when trying to figure out another member's personality, but the content of their posts provide the rest of the clues.

And I do tend to associate specific avatars with a member, if they use the same one for a really long time, or continually use a similar theme.

Ultimately any thoughts I have about a member comes from their posts.

But still, I've gotta wonder what people are going to associate with due to my current avatar. :D

I always try not to judge people by their avatars. Avatars don't mean much. If someone has a cool avatar it doesn't mean they've got a cool personality to go with it. But if I really like your avatar I might comment on it or tell you in a PM.

The only members that I recognise by the avatars are:

The Flash
RogueMartian
Dark Spider
Jim Harvey
Nightflower

I'm pretty sure that's all. Everybody else I recognise by their screen name. But if tose listed ever changed their avatar I wouldn't get confused at all. I would easily make the adjustment.

My name and my avatar have become quite the bedfellows now. I think they're inseperable, now. But I'm not complaining. It's a great shot of Dick Grayson from Sub-Zero.

Anyways, my avatar will always reflect an interest of mine. I think this one's going to be my basic avatar now. I may change it occasionally, but I think I'll always probably revert back to it later. This pic's just too cool looking not to keep. :D So remember everybody, even though I've got a Joker avatar..I'm still female. I just happen to like the Joker.....a lot :p

Matthew Hunter

I think they do. Rather, they tell something about you. If you have a joker avatar or a Batman avatar all the time, people will say, "oh, he likes Batman". I always have a Looney Tunes avatar, because, well, I'm a Looney Tunes fan and the main board I moderate and post to is the Termite Terrace Trading Post. Likewise, if you always have one that's on-the-edge, like the sexy girl I remember seeing one time, or something that borders on getting warned by the moderators...then that labels you as a boundary-pusher. Some avatars reflect a good sense of humor. Some people just make it match their user name and keep it (like Psychofox...that's a neat avatar of, well, a psycho-looking fox.) Another great example of this is a guy who was banned a while back for being obnoxious, but he had a cool avatar...his username was "Stinky Cat" and had an avatar with Butch, the black-and-grey alleycat from Tom and Jerry,in a trashcan with the name "Stinky Cat" on it. Brian Cruz always comes up with creative ones, and Jon Cooke always has a funny image related to some classic cartoon.
