It never occured to me before, but after watching last nights episode of Gundam 0083, I found myself asking, "Why the hell would you organize your entire fleet in one place when you know your enemy who is definatley going to make a move anytime soon has a nuke, an extremely powerful prototype mobile suit, and the combined fleets of Zeon?" You're just asking to lose a good portion of your fleet! Zeon will sure see the power of the Federation fleet when its scattered debris in space... Yea, I'd rather have Moncha commanding the whole of the Federal Forces than the guy who thought up that idea! :P

Like they say, hindsight is 20/20.

Yes, but the problem here is that the Feddies were blind to reality.

They were attempting to use the doctrine of "Concentration of Force" meanwhile completely ignoring the fact that their enemy had a Force Multiplying weapon of mass destruction that negates their "Single Large Force" capability.

Their tactic would have been effective except fot the Gundam Unit 2 which they KNEW was under Zeon control.

If any decent commander was in control, they would have had the fleet seperated into a few large forces in decent proximity to each other, and execute an envelopment battle plan. (Simple unimaginative by the book guaranteed success.) The worst case senario in this situation is that the Zeon blast away a large component of the fleet. BUT at least the vast majority of the fleet would still have existed to wipe out the Zeon fleet.

AND WTF! they've got their men in space suits standing on the outside hull to salute?!?

If this was a trap for the Zeon, they're idiots for not being battle ready!

"Yes, Lets concentrate the fleet, and have our crews stand on the hull so we'll be unprepared if the enemies take our bait."

I'd say that whoever divised this plan should be executed for incompetence bordering on treason. (But it looks like th GU-2 is going to take care of that.)

Looked it up... The man who organized and held the naval inspection was General Wyatt. I wonder why General Kowen would even allow Wyatt to do somthing so stupid. He seems like a sensible enough man.

Haha! What a good topic name. I loved the music and action...just like the previous episodes. Gee'. I mean really...THE OTHER SIDE's unprotected. ~_~

Hm...why didn't they have their MS's outside and ready? Gee. Some lives could've been saved...but...no. Their men were standing outside.

*Note My previous post is not to be taken as dislike of the Gundam 0083 series. In fact, I really enjoy watching it. I was just refering to my feelings in this episode. I just got into it so much, my reaction was powerful.

The Federation never really struck me as a group of tactical geniuses, even in Zeta Gundam where they're the bad guys. Heck, this isn't even the first time they've had a large chunk of their forces wiped out by a weapon of mass destruction.

It's a pity too. I really like the Earth Federal Forces, but their leadership sucks. I mean, who really is the leadership? I heard it was some sort of council or congress-like body. I'm talking more along the lines of military leadership though.

Ne1 wanna help me w/ another question too? I remember back a few years when SCI-FI was running anime, they showed one where the voice actors actually mentioned the name "UN Spacey". I've noticed this in several of the Gundam series and read that it was just another name for the Earth Federation, but I'm looking for more in depth information. Hell, I also wanna know if what I was watching that day was a Gundam series. It didn't seem like it, and since I've never seen a Gundam series where the Federation has actually been called by voice, "UN Spacey", I must assume it wasn't.

I just thought of somthing else guys... The brass were also probably trying to encourage Zeon to attack the naval inspection in order to keep them from targeting Jaburo. Taking out an entire enemy fleet is far more tempting than destroying their base of command. The blame probably has to be placed on Wyatt though. I don't believe the brass ever intended this to be an actual naval inspection. They probably just wanted it to look convincing enough that Zeon would actually attack. Unfortunatley, Wyatt took everyone off battle alert and grouped the ships in too close proximity of one another.

Then again, I may be totally wrong.

Two words : Big Idiots, I am refering of coarse to the writers of the show. This is exactly why I find myself more attracted to the Wing series.

Wing sucks. In the next two episodes, Jaburo is going to start firing the idiots who planned the review.

You complain about idiots but use Wing as a counter-example?!

"Let's make our captured enemy the pilot of our newest secret weapon against the Gundams! If he tries to turn against us, we'll just blow the whole thing up! That's the best idea we've ever had!"

RedTail, the show you're thinking of is Robotech.

About the U.N.T. Spacey:

This is from Mark Simmons' (webmaster of the old Gundam Project) FAQ (http://iszf.irk.ru/~rrr/anime/archive/txt/english/gundam.txt ) :

Q. What's the Earth government called?

A. In Japanese it's the "chikyu rempo", which can be translated as just about any form of goverment; my kanji dictionary favors "Earth Federation". But "Earth Union" and "United Nations of Terra" come the closest to being endorsed by the animated shows. ZETA GUNDAM's AEUG is an acronym for "Anti-Earth Union Group", while GUNDAM 0080 and GUNDAM 0083 stencil "U.N.T." on everything that moves. Incidentally, if you're wondering what a "spacy" is (as in the oft-seen "U.N.T. Spacy"), it's the space branch of the military. You know - army, navy, spacy and that darn holdout, the air force.

Does that help answer your question, RedTail? :)

It might also be one of the Macross movies/OVA's he's thinking of (they mention it all the time). In Robotech none of the characters mention it by name, but it's plastered all over the place. U.N.T. Spacy is also an in-joke to UN Spacey. ;)

Wow, thx Bill! That's pretty damn cool. Still, I wanna know what the hell I was watching on SCI-FI a few years back, heh. It wasn't great or anything (most I can remember is the same guy kept getting thrown in the brigg, lol).

Hmmm... it may have been one of the MSG movies if the same guy kept getting thrown into the brig (but you probably would have know if it was, right?). I think Wilco's right, though; it was probably something from Macross/Robotech.

Either that or some no-name anime that also used the term, "UN Spacey."

Hey,everyone makes mistakes even the federation. You can blame them but if every one was a tactical genius then no one would ever be besting the other,so some one has to make a mistake.
