Part 4/a
It was almost midnight when a darkly clad figure stole silently into a rare and expensive jewel shop. Only the most rich and famous would dare to shop here. But this person wasn't here to shop, they were on a mission. Outside it was dark, and a storm was building on the horizon. Inside, however, it was warm and cozy. It was a long, spacious room, filled with cases. It almost resembled a throne room. The rows were arranged as if it were a museum rather then a store. Inside the cases were thousands of priceless gems, each hauntingly beautiful and unique in their own way. The figure smiled as their eyes settled on the one they was looking for. At the far end of the room, a brilliant blue sun blazed under a spotlight. It far surpassed the other gems, sitting on it's pillow like a queen on her throne. The figure glanced around, and took a cautious step and crouched. Then the figure sprang into a series of flips with unsurpassed grace and ease. Lasers crisscrossed the room in a dazzling array of light. Each of them easily avoided. The dark figure landed in a crouch and stood, looming over the blue sun like a shadow.
"Perfect" it breathed.

Robin leapt quickly over the rooftops. He was a good runner and quite skilled at the feat, thanks to his life on the streets. The boy hoped he could outrun the incoming storm, but knew that it was all in vain. He was about four miles or so from the PD and if he hurried, he wouldn't get too wet. Running around Gotham was easy and since he couldn't drive, the only way he could get around when he was on his own. He had done it many times. He halted a moment, on the outcrop of a building called Jewel of the Nile. He checked his belt and quickly found what he was looking for.
"Another tracker?! I can't believe he doesn't trust me!" He muttered with a mischievous grin. He figured that there were a few reasons Bruce kept a close eye on him. He also figured that it would be a good way to get a free ride if needed. He quickly placed the tracker where he found it. Robin was just about to start off again when he saw something move out of the corner of his eye. The boy turned to the right and scanned the increasing darkness. Nothing. A look of puzzlement came across his face. Was his mind been playing tricks on him? Then, barely visible, he saw the outline of someone. "Hey you! Whad'ya think you're doin'?"
As he had hoped, the person turned, saw him, and bolted. He followed in hot pursuit. They raced around the dark alleys and deserted streets. Right, left, right. Then he froze. The figure was- gone... vanished into the darkness. Robin had come out to a dead end that was made into a small park. His eyes scanned the park. Had he been seeing things? After all, it was past midnight...
Thunder boomed overhead and a great gust of wind blew. He cursed under his breath and turned to go. Now there was no way he could make it to the PD without getting soaked to the bone. He sprinted out of the alley quickly, hoping to avoid some of the drops that would soon be falling.
On the top of the apartment building a crouched figure watched the young boy exit. Lightning forked across the sky. The figure became a solitary shadow against the backdrop of a stormy Gotham sky. It then stood and turned, dissolving into the darkness once more, as the light vanished from the sky. A second time the lightning forked across the sky. The rooftop was vacant as the drops started to fall.

Beep! Beep! Beep!
"Wha? Huh? Whaw!" Tim shot up in bed. His arms flailed desperately for balance but to no avail. He crashed to the ground, dragging his alarm clock with him. It slammed on to the top of his head and then flopped into his lap. "Ouch"
He hit the snooze button and groggily got to his feet. He dropped the clock onto the night stand and shuffled toward the stairs. He was still half asleep and stepping slowly. At the top of the stairs he smelled breakfast. A lazy smiled worked its way across his face and he stretched.
Alfred was putting a hot plate of newly made pancakes on the table. He put it next to the orange juice, which was next to bacon, which was next to the eggs, which was next to the biscuits. It was a small breakfast when compared to the usual. Alfred walked over to the cupboard and took out the sugar and syrup. He placed them on the table and then started cleaning the stovetop. Bruce was dressed and ready to leave. He had a meeting at eight. His eyes were glued to an article on the front page. Alfred could tell something was wrong.
Tim shuffled into the kitchen, still in his p.j.'s. He sneezed and stumbled over to a chair. The boy folded his arms on the table and put his head in them. He could barely keep his eyes open. Bruce put down the paper and looked at his son.
"So. Nothing happened on your rounds last night?" Bruce asked. Tim nodded. "Not according to the morning news"
"What?!" Tim shot up in his chair and almost tipped over. Bruce turned the paper so it faced Tim, whose jaw dropped. The front page screamed 'First Orb of Flight Stolen!!!'. Tim ripped the paper from Bruce's hand and started reading the article in shock and disbelief.
"I thought you passed this place on your rounds last night"
"I did" Tim replied flatly, still reading.
"Why didn't you stop the robbery? I know you Tim, when you see trouble, you dive in head first. Sometimes literally. I can't figure it out" Bruce eyed Tim curiously. Tim stopped reading and looked up, anger written on his features.
"I would have! You know that!"
"Then why didn't you?" Bruce asked calmly. Tim slammed his fist down on the table. Alfred turned and looked a the boy a moment, then went back to cleaning. He was now on the dishes.
"Cuz there was no robbery!" Tim snapped.
"I think the paper disagrees with you on that one"
"But... but-"
"Tim, will you just tell me what happened? Please?"
"I told you! Everything was fine"
"You didn't see a thing?"
"N- wait a minute, then there was someone!"
"Oh?" Bruce raised an eyebrow. Tim slapped his forehead.
"I'm such an idiot!"
"What happened?" Bruce asked.
"Ok, I was trying to outrun the storm, when I went by this place-"
"Do you remember the name?" Bruce probed further.
"Yea, it was called Jewel of the Nile"
"Go on"
"I was checking my belt for- uh, for a grappling hook, when I thought I saw someone coming out of the building. When I yelled, they ran. I chased them down and then..." Tim stopped, puzzled.
"Well?" Bruce inquired.
"I don't know" He shrugged. "Whoever it was... vanished. I couldn't find a thing! Nada, zip, zero. It was like they faded into the night! So I thought I was seeing things and forgot about it"
"That would explain why you were late" Bruce teased.
"And wet" Tim added bitterly. Bruce chuckled at the sour expression on the young boys face. Alfred continued to wash dishes.
"I warned you that this job had some draw backs" Bruce said casually. Tim made another sour face.
"I know! I'm just sayin'-"
"Master Timothy, will you please eat your breakfast? You're going to be late for school" Alfred asked. Tim smiled at Alfred.
"Sorry Alfie, I got a little sidetracked" Tim said with a smile.
"Alfie?" Bruce chuckled again. Alfred sighed and scrubbed away a grease spot on the pan he was washing.
"Yes... It appears that the young master has found yet another way to annoy me" Alfred said flatly. Bruce could tell he was hiding a smile. "He also calls me Al. That has a rather nice ring..."
Bruce smiled and chuckled at his good friend. Bruce knew that Alfred really didn't mind Tim, he was like another grandson. Alfred actually enjoyed the 'annoying' things that Tim would pull. Tim was much different then Dick. He was more... spunky, to say the least. He seemed to add new life to the old place. Bruce's eyes darkened slightly. He knew that he wasn't the best father, but he tried. At least Tim had Alfred to talk to. Alfred always seemed to be there for them. Bruce often found himself wondering where he'd be if Alfred wasn't there to guide him. By now Tim had filled his plate and had almost half of it clear.
"So," Tim asked, over a mouthful of eggs, "Do we have any clues?"
"Master Timothy! It is impolite to speak with your mouth full!" Alfred said, turning to face the boy. Tim's life on the street had left him with less then appropriate manners. It seemed that this was the one thing Alfred was always calling him on that. Tim muttered an apology and gulped down some milk. It left a small white mustache. Tim looked directly at Alfred as an impish grin crossed his face. Alfred glared at him. "Don't- you- dare"
Tim ran his pajama sleeve across his mouth and his grin widened. Bruce burst out laughing. Alfred gave a disgusted look and turned back to the dishes. Tim was grinning ear to ear. Bruce knew his streetwise son had a few wayward ways. He personally hoped that Tim wouldn't change, not too much at least.
"Sorry Al" Tim chirped as he stood up. He looked at Bruce curiously. "Man, you must be in a good mood. You rarely laugh"
"I am" Bruce chuckled, finally regaining control. It felt good to laugh. He hadn't in so long, it seemed he had forgotten what happiness was... He again became serious. "To answer your question, we have one clue. A glittering M. It was left on the pillow that displayed the orb. It appears to be made of a glitter spray paint"
"And the cops have no clue who did it?" Tim asked.
"No"
"As usual" Tim said with a sigh.
"Of course, this time there's one difference"
"What's that?"
"Neither do we" Bruce said solemnly. Tim nodded. For a moment, an errie silence filled the room. Neither of the dynamic duo liked the feeling that had come over them. It was one of helplessness, the fact that they couldn't do a thing. They had no leads, they had no suspects. This time they couldn't say 'oh, it was so and so... this is what we'll do'. Alfred collected the plates from the table and glanced at his watch.
"Master Timothy-" He started. Tim knowingly joined in with Alfred,"You're going to be late for school!"
''I know! I know! I'm going already! Sheesh" Tim said casually. He smiled at his mentor. "See ya later Bruce"
"Have a good day Tim" Bruce said as the boy dashed out of the room. He waited a minute, making sure Tim was out of earshot. He stood up and looked at Alfred. "Make sure he gets to school alright. I'll call you later"
"Is there a problem Master Bruce?"
"I'm not sure Alfred"
"The new thief sir?"
"Yes"
"Don't worry too much. You'll find out who it is. You always do" Alfred said.
"I know. I just want to make sure that no one gets hurt"
"I know sir"
"I'll see you later Alfred. If I don't get going, Tim won't be the only one who's late" Bruce said, checking his watch. He picked up his briefcase and started toward the garage area.
"Have a splendid day Master Bruce!" Alfred called after him.

The quiet was beautiful, calm and peaceful. It was rather unusual for being mid-afternoon. The sun streamed throughout the family room window and rippled over the carpet and onto the couch. It slowly crept towards where Barbara was napping. For once she was listening to the doctor's orders and taking it easy. The light shimmered and danced along her gentle features. She was almost in the dream state when... BRINNNNG! BRINNNNNG!
"Huh? Whoa!" She screamed as she plummeted over the side of the sofa onto the floor. She was quickly covered in an avalanche of a white cotton blanket. She growled and stared at the phone. Whoever you are, you BETTER have a good reason for calling! She picked up the phone and smiled pleasantly. "Hello?"
"Barbara, look I know you're mad but-"
"YOU!"
"Barbara please-"
"Forget it!" Click. Barbara slammed the phone down, cutting them off. Barbara stared at the floor fuming. I can't believe Dick! Did he expect me to just forget about last night! He's so- BRINNNNNNG. She glared at the phone. He wouldn't dare... She picked it up again. "Hello?"
"Look I'm-"
"Leave. Me. Alone." Click. BRINNNNNG. Barbara growled and stared at the phone. She picked it up and dropped it. BRINNNNNG. She scowled. "Doesn't he ever give up??!"
She grabbed the cordless and walked into the laundry room. BRING! A wicked grin spread across her face. She turned on the dryer and hit the talk button. She tossed the phone into the dryer and shut the door. Dick cursed under his breathe and hung up, now more determined then ever.
She trotted upstairs and took a long, hot shower. It helped her relax. Then she slipped out of her p.j.'s, which were a loose T-shirt and baggy shorts, and into a comfortable pair of jeans and a black shirt. When she came downstairs an hour had passed. She took the badly beaten but still working cordless from the dryer. She turned it off and put it on it's base to charge. And that, is that she thought triumphantly. She flopped down and the couch and reached for the remote when- BRINNNNG! She turned and stared at the phone. It couldn't be... She picked it up.
"Hello?"
"That wasn't funny"
"I thought it was" Click. She grabbed the remote when- BRINNNG! A look of shock mixed with annoyance crossed her face. He wouldn't... "Hello?"
"Come on Barbara, can't we talk? Please?"
"Um, let me think a minute... okay, no" Click. The phone rang again. She sighed, guessing, no, knowing who it was. She picked up the phone. "STOP CALLING ME!!"
"I will when you'll give me a chance to talk"
"No!"
"Then I'll keep calling" Click. Barbara looked at her phone in shock.
"No fair! I'm supposed to hang up" She snapped into the line. She sighed. He hadn't heard her. She shrugged and hung up. BRINNNNG. She glared at the phone. "Forget it Dick, I'm not picking it up"
She walked over to her answering machine and turned it off. There was no way he would be leaving a message. The ringing continued for the rest of the afternoon and into the evening. During that time Barbara did chores and even managed to work out for a couple hours, which was strictly against the doc's orders. After about the fifth hour of ringing, Barbara began to wonder if maybe it was someone else. The ringing had diminished to about every ten to twenty minutes long ago and she began to worry that it was important. She walked over to the phone and picked it up. It could her father or Bruce or-
"You finally answered"
"Dick?!?!" Barbara's jaw dropped. "Sorry, I thought it was someone else"
"Please Barbara, just give me a second"
"I just did, bye" She said sweetly. She hung up. Although the ringing had gotten on her nerves, the edge of the fight just a day before had started to wear off. That should- BRINNNG! She sighed. Now what... "Hello?"
"Barbara-"
"My. You are persistent"
"Barbara, please. Just hear me out"
"What part of no don't you understand?"
"Would you let me talk if I came over?"
"Maybe"
"That's all I needed to here" Click. He had hung up again. Barbara looked at her phone curiously. She hung it up. Now what's that supposed to- DING-DONG! Barbara looked up, shocked. No way...
She opened the door to and her jaw dropped. Outside another storm was coming, but her greatest shock was seeing Dick. It took her a minute to process everything.
She didn't say a thing, she just glared at him.
"Barbara-" He started.
"What are you doing here?!" She demanded. She could tell that he had come to apologize, but she wasn't about to let him off this easy.
"Look, I'm-"
"Didn't you get the hint? I don't want to talk!"
"But-"
"Forget it!" She slammed the door. The door bell rang again. Not this again! He was doing a good job of wearing her down. She sighed and opened the door.
"Look, I know you're mad-"
"I don't want to talk" She growled.
"But I'm-"
"Go away!" She snapped. Barbara went to slam the door, but Dick placed his foot between the frame and door. Then he placed his hand on the door and pushed gently, so he wouldn't hurt her. Barbara pressed harder, but to no avail. The door stopped about three-fourths of the way closed. "Let go!"
"No"
"I said go-" She started. For once he cut her off.
"Barbara. I'm not leaving until you hear me out" He said firmly. Silence. She leaned on the door and sighed. He had finally worn down the edges.
"You're not leaving are you?"
"I'll stay out here all night if I have to" Dick said solemnly.
"Looks like rain"
"So?" He asked. Barbara looked in his direction, but the door blocked her view.
"You'll get wet"
"No biggie. I'll dry off"
"But..." She wasn't sure what to say.
"For you it's worth it" He said softly. Barbara felt her icy heart melt. "I'd stand outside in a hurricane if I had to"
"That was sweet," Barbara said with a half smile. She sighed. "Ok, talk."
"I just wanted to say that I'm sorry for what I said last night. I wasn't thinking straight and I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you" Dick said gently. Barbara bit her lip and looked at the ground. Her silence worried him.
"Do you want to come in?" She asked after a short pause. He looked up in shock.
"What?"
"Do you want to come in?" Barbara repeated. She opened the door.
"Uh, sure. If that's okay with you" Dick added quickly. She nodded silently. "Then I guess I will"
Barbara moved aside and let him in. There was a brief, awkward silence. Neither knew what to say next. Although she'd never admit it, Barbara was glad that Dick was so stubborn. She was glad he came. Then she remembered something.
"I'm sorry too" She muttered. Dick looked at her curiously.
"For what?"
"I don't hate you... I was just really... mad"
"I know. We all say things we don't mean when we're angry"
"Wow, that's pretty impressive. Where'd you learn it?" Barbara teased. He grinned.
"What? I can't come up with something intelligent on my own?"
"No, it just-" She said laughing, "It just sounds like something Alfred would say"
"Actually it is" Dick said. He had started to laugh too. Both didn't know why it was so funny, it just... was. It's so typical of him to do that... Barbara thought affectionately. He glanced at her and could tell she was in a much better mood. It took a while for them to quiet down. She invited him into the family room and they sat on the couch. It was almost like old times again. When things were simple. She was Barbara, not Batgirl, and Dick was- no. He had always had two lives. Dick cut into her thoughts.
"So, have you read the paper yet?"
"No. I've been sleeping most of the day. Why?"
"Then I guess you haven't heard that the first orb of Flight was stolen"
"What?" Barbara asked in shock. "The million dollar things?"
"Yup"
"Who was it?"
"We don't really know" Dick said sheepishly.
"How can you guys not know!"
"Tim was on patrol but didn't get anything. He says that he thinks he saw someone, but he's not sure" Dick explained. Barbara raised an eyebrow.
"So you have no clue who took it"
"None whatsoever"
"You see? I take a break and chaos reigns" She teased. Dick rolled his eyes. "Are there any clues?"
"One"
"What's that?" She asked.
"A glittering M"
"That's it?"
"Other then that, nothing" Dick said solemnly. Barbara stared silently.
"So, what are you guys gonna do?"
"The only thing we can do- Wait" Dick replied. A heavy silence filled the room. Each one of the dark knights hated feeling helpless, but he was right. The only thing they could do was wait. Dick was deep in thought, so Barbara stared out the window. Suddenly a beam of light hit the stormy sky.
Her eyes locked on the beacon that illuminated the night and glanced at Dick. She wanted him to stay, but she wouldn't tell him that, not now anyway. Her thoughts drifted. Why is it so hard for me to show him how I feel? She found herself wondering. She knew the answer, but didn't want to admit it. She was afraid of rejection, or of losing him... like she did that night. She still couldn't believe it. He had just walked out on her- No, it was Bruce, not me She argued. Yea, but it was you too. He could have stayed- for you, but he didn't. She cringed, thinking of an excuse. He didn't have a choice! Sure he did! You just can't face the fact that he doesn't- NO! Barbara choked on a sob. He does care! I know he does! Tears involuntarily began to stream down her face. She didn't even notice. Her eyes stayed locked on the signal. Her head was spinning with a thousand thoughts at once. How could he just leave me-
"Babs?"
"Huh?" Instantly she was pulled back to reality. A wave of shock washed over her. "What did you call me?"
"Babs" Dick said, slightly puzzled. "I always called you-"
"I know, you just... haven't called me that for a long time- that's all"
"I can still call you that- can't I?"
"Yea, sure. Call me whatever you want to" Barbara said a bit colder then she intended it to be. He continued to look at her, puzzled. She became irritated. "What?"
"You're crying"
"What?"
"You're crying" He repeated. A look of shock crossed her face as she realized it was true. She quickly wiped away the tears. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing" She said with a weak smile. He looked worried and she knew that he wouldn't let it go. He had this ablity that would let him find out anything he wanted.
"You sure?"
"Really, it's nothing"
"Babs" He said firmly.
"Look, you have to go- the signal's up" She said quickly. He looked out at the sky and groaned inwardly. He looked at her a moment and got up.
"There's nothing you want to talk about?"
"Not with you" She said under her breath. She looked up and let out a quiet gasp. She didn't think he heard the comment. A hurt look crossed his face for a second and then he just shrugged and put on his jacket. She turned her eyes back to the signal. Dick held back his anger.
"Can we talk later?"
"About what?" She inquired distantly.
"Never mind. See ya later Babs" He said bitterly. She shot an angry scowl at him.
"Could you do me a favor?"
"What" Dick said, clearly agitated.
"Just call me Barbara"
"Why?" He asked in suprise. This had caught him off guard. Barbara bit her lip.
"Because- just forget it ok. I'll talk to you later"
"I wanna know why" He almost demanded. Barbara sighed and looked at him, anger and pain flashing in her eyes.
"Because I'm not your girlfriend" She said mockingly. The mark hit deep. Dick felt as if someone had taken a knife and driven it into his heart. He opened his mouth to give a painful retort, but then thought better of it. Instead he turned and started towards the door.
"Fine- Barbara. See ya later" He almost sneered. For once she didn't reply. She just stared out the window. As he reached the door, he heard muffled sobs. Great, she's crying. He cursed under his breath. He hated it when she cried. He turned to look at her one last time. She had her face buried in her hands. He decided it would be a waste of his time to comfort her. Things would only get worse. The door closed silently. Barbara looked up.
"Sure, just walk away! Just like you always do!" She snapped venomously, even though she knew he didn't hear her. She burst out crying and buried her face into a blanket. Outside, engines roared in ignition. She was on her feet in a second and easily cleared the couch. She made the door in record time and threw it open. "Dick, wait! Please!"
He looked up and hesitated. Then he put the kick-stand down and turned off the bike. Barbara took a deep breath and bounded down the front walk. She made it to the bike in seconds, then collapsed into Dick's arms. He took off his helmet and placed it on the seat. Pain was written on his face.
"What is it?" He asked impatiently. "I have to be somewhere- like now"
"I know" Barbara said, still trying to catch her breath. "I'm sorry"
"Yea, I know" Dick said flatly. Barbara looked into his sapphire eyes and silently pleaded with him. He softened up slightly. Tears were still streaming down her face. His tone became more gentle. "I know"
"I'll let you go. See ya" She muttered quickly. She pulled away and walked up the path. Dick shook his head and put his helmet back on. The engines roared and he sped off into the night. Barbara watched the tail lights fade into the distance and then closed the door.

A disgruntled Nightwing sped his bike down the desolate streets of Gotham. It was two minutes to midnight and no sign of trouble anywhere. Half an hour before it had stopped raining cats and dogs, but another storm was on the horizon. He was wet, tired and cold. To say the least he was in a really bad mood. He was cursing under his breath when a voice came over the comlink.
"You really shouldn't be using language like that. It's not setting a good example" a young boy did an almost perfect impression of Alfred. Dick laughed.
"Good one Mr. I'm-A-Perfect-Angel. Easy for you to say, you're dry!" He replied smartly. Robin laughed.
"I am an angel" He replied innocently. Now Nightwing laughed.
"Don't play dumb with me Boy Wonder! You're mouth is worse then a sailor's parrot!" Nightwing shot back. A deeper voice muttered something to the boy. Dick chuckled. Tim had gotten another lecture about the use of the comlink. The voice then directed it's attention to the young man riding the bike.
"Find anything?"
"Nope" Dick replied curtly.
"Then head back to the cave. I'm already down one member of my team, I don't need to lose another" Bruce said firmly.
"Thanks. See ya there" Nightwing replied dryly. The comlinks clicked off and he sighed. Bruce sounded irritated. Dick was figured it was from the lack of leads. He turned down a road and his mind wandered. It drifted back to one person in particular... Barbara Gordon. He tried to figure out what was wrong, but it was useless. He decided to apologize for what he did, even if he was unsure of what it was he was sorry for. He looked at the clock on the bike's dash. Maybe if there was enough time he could check on-
BRINNNNNNNGGGGGGG!!!!!! The sudden sound of an alarm startled him. REEEEECCCHHH!!!!!!! Dick hit his brakes and the bike skidded. Everything was fine until he hit a depression in the road. The front wheel went down and he flew into the air. He slammed onto the sidewalk, back first. Pain shot through his body. He cursed several times and winced. The alarm in a store several yards away continued ringing wildly. Should've been more careful on the slick roads... he thought through clenched teeth. Should've known better- He let out a gasp for air, then things went black.
The window of the store shattered and glass showered everywhere. The figure landed in a crouch and scanned the scene. Her eyes locked on the riderless bike. The figure let out a soft gasp and then looked several feet away. Slowly the shadow approached the fallen knight and looked him over. Not bad... She gingerly removed the helmet and smiled. She placed it beside him. Poor guy. Must hurt a lot... She ran her hand along his well built chest and then slide her fingers though his raven colored hair. She gave a bittersweet smile. Must be a dark knight. What was his name? Nightwing? Yes! That's it Nightwing! The name fits... Looks like he needs some help... She drew back her hand and sprinted to the bike. She turned on the comlink and hesitated.
"Hey Bats? You there?" She asked, dropping her voice.
"Who is this?" A deep voice thundered.
"Nightwing's down. He's by the Imperial Jewel store" She hissed. She hit the off button and sprinted back to the knight. Batman was desperately trying to figure out what was going on. He locked onto the location on the bike and headed that way.
The shadowy figure was once again interested in the young man. She smiled and smoothed his hair back. The injury wasn't too bad, he'd be back on his feet in no time. She began to run her fingers through his hair again. Slowly Nightwing came to.
"Huh? Wha-" He muttered weakly. He opened his eyes, but everything was blurry. A dull ache came from his back. The figure startled in surprise from the movement. A gentle grin slide across her face.
"I see you awake my dark knight. I bid thee well. Adieu" She whispered softly and then rose to her feet. By now he had begun to focus and tried to stand. The shadow sprinted into the alley. He shook his head and then started to follow. She gracefully leapt up a dumpster and onto a fire escape. He jumped onto the fire escape but lost his balance in a bout of vertigo. He fell onto a pile of heaped up trash bags. The figure stopped at the third story and looked down. He stirred and she bounded up the remaining flights.
He got to his feet and was about to try the escape again when a police car pulled up. The Commissioner jumped out and barked several orders to officers who arrived on the scene. Nightwing swore under his breath and started towards the them.
"Hey Commish, don't that bike over there belong to Bats?" Detective Bullock asked. A look of concern passed over Jim Gordon's face.
"Yes, I believe it is. What's that doing here?" He said solemnly.
"My question exactly. Why would the Bat leave his bike here" Harvey said suspiciously. Nightwing sighed. Didn't anyone know Bats had a car, not a bike?
"Actually it belongs to me" Nightwing said painfully. He emerged from the shadows. Both officers turned to face the young man.
"Oh, hey Nightwing" Bullock said gruffly. He smiled weakly at Bullock. Jim raised an eyebrow at his friend. Harvey was against the Dark Knight and his team nine times out of ten. Bullock looked away and muttered, "He helped me out a while back, nothing big"
"Sure- If you consider your life nothing big" Nightwing added. Bullock glared at him and he smiled politely. Gordon chuckled. "Anyway, I suppose your wonderin' why I'm here"
"You could that- Junior" Harvey said with a grin. Nightwing scowled at him. Junior was just about as bad as being called kid.
"I was riding by when the alarm went off. I hit the brakes and flew into the air. I landed on my back and was knocked out. I heard someone but was still too out of it to tell you something important. When I came to, they ran. I tried to follow but-" He stopped a moment, angry at himself for letting the thief get away. "But I couldn't catch them"
"I'm sure you did the best you could Nightwing, considering you were in pain. It's nothing to beat yourself up about" Jim said gently. A look of pained frustration crossed Nightwing's face.
"Batman would have caught 'em" Nightwing said bitterly. Jim placed a comforting hand on the young man's shoulder.
"You're not Batman" He said firmly. Nightwing looked at him with the expression of a discouraged child who had just been enlightened. "Don't try to be. You are your own person. That's what makes you the person you are. There's no need to be ashamed of it"
"Thanks Commish" Nightwing replied wholeheartedly. A smile crept across his face. "I'll remember that"
"And that's the reason" Jim lowered his voice and grinned, "That my daughter likes you so much"
Nightwing blushed and the two officers burst out laughing. It was true that Barbara would give any excuse to be around the dynamic duo. But when Nightwing was there, she wouldn't give a reason at all. Her father said that she had a lot of free time on her hands. Dick sighed. If they only knew. He wished that he and Barbara could get along. Lately it seemed no matter what he did, she would blow up at him.
"He's right you know. The sooner you stop comparing yourself to the Bat, the better things will be" Harvey added. Nightwing nodded silently. Without warning the Batmobile peeled around the corner, almost taking the curb with it. Then it screeched to a halt in front of them. Batman narrowly missed the hatch. He saw Nightwing and let out a sigh of relief. Harvey muttered, "Speaking of the Bat..."
"Nightwing-"
"Sorry. They got away" Dick said, eyes cast to the ground. Batman stared in silence, shocked. That's not what he was here for. At this moment all he cared about was his son. He shook his head and put a hand on Nightwing's shoulder.
"I wanted to know if- if you were alright" He said quietly. Nightwing looked up and stared in complete shock, unable to speak or even nod. Bruce? Worried? About him? A strange feeling welled up inside him. Bruce never worried about anything let alone him. Maybe Bruce really did care about him. Tears started to form but Dick forced them back. Getting no response, Bruce panicked. "Are you?"
"Uh yea" Nightwing said, finally getting a grip. He smiled weakly. "Never felt better"
"Sure" Batman said with a slight smile. He could tell Dick was trying to be funny. "Need a ride?"
"If it's okay with you" Nightwing said calmly. Bruce nodded. Batman briefly conferred with Jim while Robin was busy antagonizing Bullock. Dick leaned up against the building, deep in thought. He had heard the voice and made out some of the words. It sounded feminine. He overheard Selina's name. It would explain the feminine voice, yet... something didn't fit. Why would she help him? He wasn't Batman. And she had long gotten over the go after the son thing. What did she have to gain? There were too many questions and not enough answers.
Robin threw a batarang and knocked some water off the overhang above Nightwing. The cold waterfall cascaded onto him and ran through his hair. A chill ran down his spine. Nightwing completely missed Robin's apology. He remembered something else. She had been extremely close and had run her fingers through his hair. The voice rang out in his mind. I see you awake my dark knight. I bid thee well. Adieu. It was definitely a woman, but who? And what did she mean by 'my dark knight'? He kept these things to himself. He knew he'd never hear the end of it if he told the duo now. Once he figured out who it was there wouldn't be a problem. He let out a loud sigh and looked up. The rooftops made a perfect silhouette against the stormy sky.
*************************************************************************************************
Dick slammed his fist onto the table. A glass of orange juice rattled precariously. He rubbed his sore hand and cursed under his breath. Great, now I have a sore hand *and* a sore back he thought bitterly. He was staring at the headline on the front page of the morning paper. It screamed 'Second Orb of Flight Vanishes!!! Only a Mysterious M remains!!!' The events of last night were still fresh in his memory. He was still angry about losing the thief, but he was happy to. Bruce had actually worried about him.
Many would take a concerned father for granted. Parents always worried about their kids. But to Dick, it was worth more then all the treasures in the world. To know that he was accepted and loved by his father, and that he had a real family- was an incredible feeling. One that he wasn't used to having. He liked it. Dick quickly read over the article to get some facts. The butterfly was a crimson ruby. Both robberies cost twenty-million. The phone rang and Dick looked up from the paper.
"Hello?" He said picking the phone up. He sounded rather irritated.
"You sound like you're having a wonderful morning" came the sarcastic reply. Dick grinned. He knew who it was.
"Hi Bruce" He said, in a much lighter mood.
"How are you feeling?"
"Pretty good. A little sore, but pretty good"
"Your back?"
"Nah. My ego" Dick replied coolly. Bruce laughed. Again the feeling of acceptance washed over him. He smiled. "So, did you read the paper?"
"That's why I called"
"Anything new?" Dick asked hopefully.
"Other then that the thief is most likely a female, no" Bruce said in frustration.
"Most likely a female?"
"The voice was feminine but no one had clearly seen the suspect. So we can only assume that it's a she"
"But I heard her!" Dick muttered angrily. He didn't say it low enough.
"You heard her?" Bruce said smiling. He had been right in assuming that his son knew more then he left on.
"Uh-" Dick stopped, realizing what he said. Aw, what the heck. "Yea. She said something last night"
"She did?" Bruce asked, intrigued.
"Yea"
"What'd she say?"
"Nothing"
"How could she say nothing and you hear her?"
"Uh-" Dick tried to stall. He was rather embarrassed by what she said, even though it wasn't that big of a deal. His phone beeped, telling him that someone was on the other line. Saved by the bell... "Hey Bruce, someone's on the other line. Hang on"
"No problem" Bruce said calmly. Dick hit the button and switched lines.
"Hello?" Dick said casually.
"Morning Boy Wonder"
"Babs! I mean-"
"It's ok. Look, about what I said last night. Forget ok?"
"Sure. How ya doin'?"
"I'm fine thanks. How bout you?" Barbara replied.
"I'm okay" He said quickly. There was no way he was telling her about wiping out.
"Did you get the paper yet?"
"Yea"
"So... you wanna tell me what you guys know" She asked.
"If I knew anything, I'd tell you"
"Still no leads?"
"Nope. Hey Babs, hang on"
"Okay"
"Ok, let's see. Hit this and this" Dick muttered while hitting a few buttons. "There. Hey Bruce, you there?"
"Yup"
"Babs? You read me?"
"Loud and Clear"
"Barbara?" Bruce asked.
"Hi Bruce. Heard you guys were havin' trouble with the new thief" She teased.
"Just a little" Bruce replied.
"That's an understatement" Dick muttered under his breath.
"What?" Both Bruce and Barbara asked.
"Nothing" Dick said quickly. They talked awhile. A few questions here, a few answers there. The three were running around in circles. Dick was getting bored.
"What's the M stand for?" He asked casually. Both ends became silent a moment. Dick thought they disconnected. "Bruce? Babs?"
"We're here" Bruce said finally. Barbara was silent.
"What's wrong?" Dick asked.
"Nothing. You just had a good point. I was thinking it could be a trademark-" Bruce started. Dick joined in.
"Or a name" Dick added.
"Ok, so what if it is a trademark?" Barbara said impatiently. "What would it be?"
"What place would fit?" Bruce inquired.
"Uh, let's see..." Dick muttered. "Uh- no clue"
"Ditto here Bruce" Barbara chimed.
"Then it must be her name" Bruce said seriously.
"Wait a minute- her? Since when did it become a her?" Barbara asked suspiciously. Dick winced.
"Getting back on track. What's her name?" Dick asked, changing the subject.
"So what begins with M?" Barbara asked flatly. She raised an eyebrow. He was holding something back... She'd find out later.
"Well, there's the far out. That would be Margo, Margin, Margarita, Mango and May" Dick started.
"And the assumed. Possibly Mystery, Missy and Mad Hatter" Bruce added. Barbara cut in.
"Yea, but this isn't his deal. He likes toying with people's minds"
"Well he'd be doing a good job right now!" Dick snapped.
"Besides, you guys said the thief was female" She shot back.
"She's right Dick. It can't be Hatter" Bruce said. The three sighed. Barbara decided to try again, hoping to hit something new.
"Ok... What if it means something. Like it goes along-" She began.
"With the crimes she's been committing" Dick finished. Bruce chuckled. The two were always completing the other's thought it seemed. Dick smiled and complimented her. "Good thinking Babs"
"Thanks" She chirped.
"So let's see... how about Mage?" Ah- nevermind, it doesn't fit. Do you think it's Mist?" Dick inquired, almost hopefully. Barbara scowled and let out an agitated sigh.
"Definitely not her style. Nor is it Cinderella's" She snapped hotly. Bruce chuckled at Barbara's reaction. Her red hair was an understatement of her fiery persona. "And what's so funny Mr. Wayne?"
"Nothing" Bruce said quickly.
"Why'd you mention Cinderella? That's a C, not an M" Dick said, clearly irritated.
"I know that! I can spell!" Barbara snapped. Again Bruce remembered the old times. Batgirl and Robin would always get into it. He cut in before it went any further. Another tradition from old times.
"Alright you two. Get a grip" Bruce thundered. Then his tone lightened up and he added with a grin, "Don't force me to have you two kiss and make up!"
"Ha, ha. Very funny" Dick said, a scowl on his face. Barbara gagged, causing Dick to mutter something under his breath. Bruce smiled. Exactly like old times.
"Any way, getting back on track" Barbara continued. "What about Mystic? Could that work?"
"Not really. What about Miscellaneous?" Dick answered.
"Definitely no. Any girl I know would never use such a long, odd name like that" Barbara shrugged it off. Bruce listen to the two again exchange a few words and cut in... again.
"What about Magician?" Bruce asked. Dick and Barbara stopped arguing for a minute. Dick replied first.
"Magician? It could work..."
"Nah. The name would need to have more class" Barbara said confidently. Dick rolled his eyes and let out an irritated sigh.
"Look Your Majesty- hey, wait a minute, Majesty" Dick said.
"Well, that is a classy name" Barbara said thoughtfully.
"But does it have to do with the crimes?" Bruce reminded them.
"No" Dick said flatly.
"Nice try Boy Wonder, but I think you missed the bull's eye again" Barbara sneered. "Of course you were never good at archery-"
"Look, I don't know what your problem is, but I'm getting sick of your attitude. You haven't been up until midnight for the past two days busting your-" Dick snapped.
"That's it!" Bruce thundered.
"What's it?" Barbara asked.
"Midnight!" Bruce answered.
"The time the robberies have been committed! It could be a name..." Dick answered. "It would also fit the clothing. She almost blends into the night"
"So we can assume it's a woman and her name is Midnight... right" Barbara said sarcastically. "Are you guys nuts?!"
"You got a better idea?" Dick snapped angrily.
"Yea! I'm gonna take a nap. Maybe you should too! That way you won't be so cranky!" Barbara snapped. "Talk to you guys later!"
Barbara clicked the off button on her cordless and sighed. She wondered why she had gotten into it with Dick. Now she'd have to apologize again. She placed the cordless next to her cell phone and picked up the paper. Suddenly a grin spread across her face and she burst out laughing. It was pathetic really. Not even the Dark Knight could figure it out. Barbara's cell phone beeped, alerting her that she had a call. She let out a surprised yelp. Then her eyes darkened. It couldn't be... She picked it up.
"Hello?"
"Good Morning. Did you get the paper?" A delighted voice asked.
"Whadya think your doing!I told you I'd call!" Barbara hissed menacingly.
"Just thought I'd say hi and see how things are"
"They're fine, thank you. And you don't need to check up on me! I'm not a child!"
"I'm aware of that fact thank you" the voice said coldly.
"Look, you can't call. Got it? I'll call you. That was the plan, that's the way things are gonna be" She snapped angrily.
"Fine" the voice replied angrily. Then the line went dead. Barbara was scowling when she hit the button. She slammed the phone on the table and leaned back into her soft couch. Her eyes were dark and stormy, but outside the sun was shining.

Batgirl

It was half past ten that night when Bruce was making his way to the cave. The computer screen was flashing wildly. Good, Dick made it... he thought. Tim would be down shortly. He quickened his step, eager to learn what was found.
"What do you know?" He asked the figure in the chair.
"Well, it seems that our friend will be going to the fair tonight" a feminine voice chirped brightly. Bruce thought he was going to have a heartattack.
"BARBARA!" He roared. Why on earth was she doing here? The chair swung around and Barbara smiled at him. Bruce groaned.
"Hey Bruce. Come on, did you really think it'd be that easy to get rid of me?" She teased. Bruce sighed.
"I was hoping" He muttered under his breath. Both turned toward the garage area when a bike entered the cave. Barbara swore under her breath. Great, now there's *two* of them... she thought. Someone was coming.
"Hey Bruce, what's Barbara's bike-" Nightwing stopped dead when he saw Barbara. She spun back to face the computer. He looked at Bruce, who shook his head. Dick hesitated, then questioned her. "So, what'd you find?"
"The third orb is at the Renaissance Fair, in downtown Gotham" Barbara said flatly. Bruce shot a hard glare at Nightwing. Dick shot a sour look back and then turned to face the computer. She went on. "It's a dark purple butterfly. Worth about ten million. It's in the central square, the main attraction"
"Ok, so now what?" Nightwing asked, turning to Batman. Barbara was typing again. Batman thought a moment.
"Well, we can beat her to the punch and guard the orb" He said distantly. Nightwing sighed.
"I think we're in trouble. She's already gotten away from Robin and me. What makes you so sure you can catch her?" Nightwing asked sarcastically. Batman glanced at him momentarily. "Oh, that's right. You're Batman. No one can get away from you"
"Well, there was Cinderella" Bruce said thoughtfully. "And Selina has escaped many times, not to mention Talia..."
"Yea, yea, I get the idea..." Nightwing rolled his eyes and leaned against the chair. Bruce muttered something under his breath and glanced at Barbara. She had a strange grin on her face and was typing fiercely. She was planning something, he could feel it. He looked at Dick and then back at her. Uh oh... he thought. Sure enough, Barbara suddenly whipped the chair around to the right, sending Dick to the floor. He had a look of shock on his face and stared blankly. Bruce wanted to smile but knew better. When Dick was Robin, he'd always fall for that one. She was facing both of them. Dick scowled at her and she smiled sweetly at him.
"I'll meet you and Robin at the PD. I got work to do" Nightwing snapped bitterly. Batman looked at Barbara and then back at his son, who had turned and started toward the bikes. Barbara was on her feet in a second, following Nightwing.
"Dick, I'm sorry-" She started. He stopped and glared at her.
"You know, you've been saying that a lot lately" He growled. He started toward his bike again. Barbara persisted.
"Dick-" She stepped in front of him, causing him to stop momentarily.
"Leave me alone" He snapped, pushing past her. His eyes were wet, something he'd never let her see. Why was she acting like this? What'd he do to her? He mounted his bike and grabbed his helmet. Barbara reached out and grabbed his arm. He turned to her, his eyes cold.
"Dick, I mean it. I'm really sorry" She whispered, her eyes pleading with him to stay. Dick didn't know what to do. She was tearing him apart inside. He was angry and confused. He jerked his arm away.
"Why don't you go back to Bruce. He was more of your type anyway" He hissed venomously. The words were out of his mouth before he could stop them. Instantly he regretted it. It took a minute to sink in. Barbara's eyes darkened and she ran her hand across his face. It stung more then the first time.
"How dare you" She growled. Tears crept up, but she forced them back. She would never let him see her cry, ever. She spun around and ran back the way she came. Nightwing stared after her a moment, then put on his helmet and started the engines. He knew that an apology was of little use now. The engines roared and he sped into the night. Meanwhile, Barbara sat back down at the computer.
"What happened?" Bruce asked. Barbara wiped away the tears and started typing. She hit the keys harder then they needed to be.
"Nothing" She said quickly. Bruce put a hand on her shoulder.
"What did he say?" Bruce asked gently. No reply. "I'm sure he didn't mean it"
"No. He never does" Barbara replied, her voice dripping with bitter sarcasm. She let out a small, angry laugh. "He never does"
Bruce gently pulled her back against the chair and spun it around. Barbara had her arms crossed against her chest, her eyes full of pain and anger. Bruce knelt down and put his hands on her shoulders, making sure they had eye contact. She stared passed him blankly.
"Barbara listen to me. I know that it's hard to see it sometimes, but he really does care for you" Bruce said gently. Tears spilled onto her face.
"He has a funny way of showing it" She replied bitterly. Bruce smiled weakly and went on.
"Dick's not used to showing you how he feels. He wants to tell you, but he can't find the right words. He adores you Barbara, he always has. When Dick talks about you, he glows. Trust me on this one. Whatever he said, he didn't mean. You mean the world to him and if something ever happened to you, I honestly believe that Dick wouldn't be able to go on. To him, you mean more then life itself" Bruce finished and watched Barbara for a response. Her eyes were now lighter and filled with sadness.
"Do you mean that?" She finally asked.
"Every word of it" Bruce replied confidently. Barbara wiped away her tears.
"Thanks Bruce" Barbara muttered with a smile. She hugged Bruce. He remembered when he and Dick had had that conversation. He figured if Dick found out he told her this he was toast. It was as if Barbara read his mind. "I won't tell him, I promise"
Barbara and Bruce talked a little longer. Then Tim came down and suited up. Alfred was told to take Barbara home, to which she protested. In the end, she finally gave in. She watched the duo ride off into the night and told Alfred she'd be up shortly. Barbara walked up to the computer and studied the screen. The last two orbs were at the Gotham Public Museum and City Hall. Odd places for jewels she thought. She hit a button and a gray line started moving.
Slowly it moved from one place to the next. It stopped at City Hall. Barbara's eyes widened. Never in a million years would she have expected it. Before her on the screen was a glittering M. The new thief was going to try to mark the city with her sign. Alfred called her name and Barbara turned.
"Coming" Barbara called. She turned back to the computer and hit a few buttons. The screen went blank. Barbara dashed up the stairs and into the manor, hoping not to get a lecture on how late it was.
****************************************************
Alfred closed the car door and walked Barbara inside. She had told him it wasn't necessary, but being the gentleman he was, had insisted. What would the masters say if I hadn't made sure you were completely safe? He had asked. They small talked for a few minutes and Alfred was ready to go. They said their good byes and Alfred made his way to the door. On the floor near the entrance was a small crumpled up piece of paper. He picked it up and asked her if it was important. She replied no. He stuffed it into his pocket and left.
****************************************************
It was twenty to twelve and the dynamic trio was going to have a conference on the GCPD rooftop. This time it was only the commissioner. Harvey had complained that it was too cold for a useless meeting with Bats and Renee was on her beat. Jim really didn't mind being alone. He and Batman were close friends and more could be discussed without the constantly complaining Bullock. He hoped that the Dark Knight had had better luck then he had at figuring this thief out. The clock struck the quarter mark and three phantoms dissolved from the night, slowly approaching him. Jim smiled.
"Good to see you Batman" Jim studied the darkness and went on. "I see you brought some friends"
"Hope you don't mind" Nightwing said flatly.
"Your always welcome here Nightwing" Jim replied gently. He guessed that something was bothering the young man. Jim knew from the moment he met Nightwing that it was or rather had been the old Robin. Robin had just grown up. He assumed that Nightwing was around the same age as his daughter. He knew it didn't matter, Barbara would always be the fondest of Nightwing. Jim would catch her flirting with Nightwing when she thought no one was paying attention. Sometimes he'd flirt back.
"Thanks" Robin muttered.
"And you too Robin" Jim added quickly added. Robin blushed. He hadn't meant to actually be heard. Nightwing smiled weakly.
"So what's new Commish?" Robin chirped.
"I was hoping you'd know" Jim replied solemnly. Robin watched his mentor and the commissioner carefully, taking in each word. They talked about a number of things, but Nightwing didn't hear any of it. He leaned against a vent and crossed his arms. He stared at the ground, deep in thought. Nightwing couldn't keep his mind off of one thing. He felt horrible for saying all that stuff but wondered why had Barbara acted the way she did. His mind wandered aimlessly and kept going back to her. What happened between them? He had never had any trouble showing his feelings for her before-The memories flooded back. His graduation, Bruce's call, showing up at Barbara's place. Then finding out she was Batgirl. He had quit... Nightwing looked up. You idiot! he thought Did you ever consider how painful it was for her? I had my reasons he defended. Sure we all do. It still hurts the young man thought. Still hurts her too his mind countered. So what should I do? You already know the answer. He grimaced and tried to find a way around it. She started it he protested. Oh please! Don't start that-
"Ready?" Batman boomed. Nightwing startled. He hadn't noticed the end of the conversation. Or that the others were staring at him.
"Huh?" He asked.
"We're going to the fair. It's almost midnight. Are you ready to go?" Batman repeated. Nightwing nodded quickly. "Let's go"
The friends said their good-byes and took off in the direction of Central Gotham where the Renaissance fair was being held. It was an annual event and each year it's main attraction was the third orb of flight. The three arrived and split up. Robin took the Juggler's Square. Batman took the potter's booth and Nightwing hid in the fortune teller's tent, which was next to the Square of Flight. They waited a full ten minutes. Then the clock on Cityhall struck twelve and a figure emerged from the darkness.
Batgirl
07-12-2001, 05:27 PM
The figure crept across the center square carefully. Batman signaled Nightwing, who was the closest to her. He nodded and slowly slid into the shadows. Robin watched intensely and slid back further so he wouldn't be seen. The figure stopped three quarters of the way to the orb and looked around. He's here, she thought I can feel it. Nightwing froze. She scanned the area several times before taking the cautious last steps to her prize. Batman signaled to Robin. Stay. Robin made a face but nodded. I never get to have the fun. The thief worked carefully and soon had the orb in her hands. A smile slid across her face. Batman leapt on a nearby roof silently. It was a wooden stand for games. He crouched down and nodded. Everything was ready. The figure put the orb into a pouch and turned.
"Ah!" She yelped. Nightwing stood inches away from her, eyes dark and forbidding. She backed into the case and it toppled over. The sound of shattering glass echoed in the night. A brief glance down and back at the knight told her she better move. She jumped the case and bolted. Nightwing trailed her easily.
"Going so soon?" Batman leapt down bow legged several yards in front of her. The figure dropped and slid between his legs. Batman turned and grabbed the back of her cloak. Uh oh... Nightwing tried to slow down but slipped in a puddle and went flying towards the pair. "All right. Ta-"
Batman was cut short when Nightwing slammed into the back of his knees. Batman toppled over and lost his grip on the cape as he fell. While the two knights thundered to the ground, the figure sprinted. Batman growled and rolled to his side. "You all right?"
"Don't, eh, let her get away" Nightwing stuttered. The pain in his back caused him to curse several times. Batman put two fingers to his lips and whistled. Robin grinned. Show time... He ditched the spot and followed the retreating figure. Batman helped Nightwing to his feet.
"Sorry, I should've paid more attention" Batman said quietly. Nightwing grinned weakly and laughed. Humor helped ease the pain.
"Man, we walked right into that one. It's gotta be one of the oldest tricks in the book" He said. Batman nodded and gave a half smile at his son's attempt at humor. "Can you run?"
"Let's go" Nightwing said as he began his sprint. The original duo reached the car and Batman hit a few keys. A red R beeped on the screen. Nightwing chuckled.
"Got it. Get in" Batman commanded. Nightwing jumped in and then the hatch closed. With a loud roar, the Batmobile took off into the night.
*************************************************************************************************
By now Robin and the figure were in the heart of downtown Gotham. The figure was good at dodging and creating obstacles but Robin persisted. Now she was getting worried. She hadn't expected him to do so well. Mirage was almost impressed. About half an hour later, both were beginning to tire of the game. The figure sprinted up a fire escape and paused momentarily on the ledge of the roof to catch her breath.
"Gotcha!" Robin screamed. He pounced on the figure and they rolled onto the roof. A brief struggle ensued and the figure knocked Robin off her back. She sprang to her feet and disappeared through a door way into a factory that made glow toys. Robin leapt to his feet and rushed through the door, almost tripping on the first few stairs. He grabbed the rail and regained his balance. He growled in disgust. "Lost her... but not for long"
Tim started down the stairs carefully. He kept all his senses alert, like his mentors had trained him to do. He reached the bottom of the steps and looked around. The halls were empty. He debated which way to go and choose left. He passed by the empty rooms and an eerie feeling crept up his spine. Half way down the hall he stopped. Someone was singing... or rather the melody was sung without the lyrics. Robin recognized the melody. It was the lullaby from the Prince of Egypt. It's tune was almost enchanting and he felt the urge to follow it. He internally debated this since it could be a trap, yet, it could also lead him to the thief. The Boy Wonder's curiosity got the best of him and he wandered through the halls towards the voice. He came to a large room with gigantic vats full of a lime green liquid. It illuminated the room in a bright green glow. Then it stopped.
Robin froze in the center of the room and cautiously glanced around. He couldn't see any one, but he could feel her presence. He walked around the nearest vat and felt someone watching him. A chill ran down the boy's back. He turned around slowly and peered into the darkness. At first he saw nothing, then, slowly a figure emerged from the shadows. He could see a black outline from his current position, nothing else. He approached warily.
The figure stood her ground patiently. As he drew nearer, Robin realized that the person was covered by a long, black cloak. It hugged the shoulders and gently flowed to the feet. A hood draped over the face slightly so that it was hidden. He stopped several feet in front of the woman, giving himself room to move at a moment's notice. The young boy stared at the hood and to his surprise saw two sapphire orbs glowing back at him. His fear increased but he stood his ground. He gathered the nerve to speak.
"Who are you?" Robin demanded. The woman slid forward into the eerie green light. It gave her an unearthly glow that seemed both terrifying and beautiful at the same time. He shifted uneasily. Gloved hands dissolved out of the cloak and placed themselves on the hood. Robin watched wordlessly, as if in a trance. His mind told him to attack but his body wasn't responding. He realized that the blue orbs were gone and guessed that she had closed her eyes. Then, without warning, the hood dropped and the cape flared out, gently floating to the floor. The figure looked up and opened her eyes. Robin gasped in awe. "Incredible"
The woman had long, straight black hair, that washed over her shoulders. It sparkled with millions of tiny diamonds. A small strip of hair was slipped over her ear in an elf like style. Her face was snowy white with black lips and eyelids. This only accented her most stunning feature, her sapphire eyes. The blue was so brilliant and pure that it left him breathless. The gold earrings twinkled like stars in the heavens. As if her face weren't beautiful enough, her figure complemented the woman nicely.
She wore a long sleeved white spandex top that was covered by a black vest. It was laced up the middle with a black cord, giving it a medieval flare. Long black gloves covered her hands and reached to her elbows. The black leather-like shorts went to the middle of her thigh. Fish net tights that she wore were midnight in color, turning the skin beneath it a stormy gray. Jet black knee high boots added the final touch. She was terrifying and ghastly yet hauntingly beautiful at the same time, a breathtaking creature of the night. Robin watched in a silent awe. A dangerous grin crossed the woman's face. Her pearly teeth shone in the ghostly lighting. Robin gulped and took an uneasy step back. She spoke softly.
"So, the Boy Wonder alone could track me? It seems that they underestimate you" He nodded, unsure of her intentions. She went on. "Do you speak?"
"Yes?" Robin squeaked sheepishly. She chuckled softly and he blushed. A cold chill ran down his back and he took another step back. He reprimanded himself for acting like such a child.
"Are you frightened by me?" the woman asked coolly. Robin retained his composure and stood tall. His eyes narrowed. Her brow raised gently in intrigue.
"No" He said firmly. A blood chilling laugh came from the woman's throat but he held his ground. He was strong willed and more determined then a bull dog.
"Good" She replied gently. She extended her hand. He looked at it blankly, not sure of what to do. "Pleased to meet you Robin"
"Uh, yea sure" He muttered looking away. She looked at him curiously, a grin forming at his shyness. "Same here"
"Am I unwelcome?" She asked, withdrawing her hands. Robin shrugged. He began to wonder why she wasn't attacking. She knelt down and picked up her cloak. "Are we enemies?"
"What do you think?" Robin snapped. He was more confused then worried. Where were Batman and Nightwing? They should have been there by now. Could he take her? He studied her again, this time to size her up. She cleared him by six inches, maybe a little taller. She had a good build, which probably meant that she was quick and had some strength. And from what he had already seen, he figured she was pretty skilled. "This is my city and I don't like trouble"
"Big words little one. Do you really think you're that good?" She asked coolly. A dangerous smile crossed her face. "It isn't wise to bring down my wrath"
"Puh, you can't touch me! Batman'll have your hide!" Robin said confidently. Her eyes narrowed at him and she growled. He braced himself. She gave a cold laugh.
"Really? I find that hard to believe since he can't even corner me. I believe you're forgetting something my little feathered friend"
"What's that?" He demanded. He was beginning to think that angering her was a really bad idea. He retained his composure.
"We're alone- You don't have any back up" She said smartly, confidence ringing in her voice. Robin gulped and a weak grin crossed his face.
"I was hoping you wouldn't notice" He stuttered. He figured that now would be a good time to split. Nightwing had once told him that retreat wasn't cowardly... most of the time. He remembered the phrase 'It's better for a dog to leave a battle licking its wounds than to die a breath away from victory'. He shifted his weight. "My, my look at the time. As much as I'd love to stay, I got a full day of school tomorrow and loads of homework to do"
"Tomorrow's Saturday" The woman hissed dangerously. Robin began backing up. Her eyes narrowed and she crouched, a lioness ready to spring on her prey.
"Well, gotta go... Bye!" Robin yelped out. He turned and bolted. The woman sprang into a full blown run effortlessly. Boy Wonder dodged in and out, around every possible obstacle he could find trying to get a good lead. Unfortunately this didn't work out quite as he planned. She was incredibly agile and quick, giving him a small but nonetheless important lead. He ducked behind a few crates and crawled. The thief landed on the other side. He froze and watched her through a crack. He felt like the boy in Jurrasic Park, in the scene where the raptors were hunting the kids in its big kitchen. She turned and went the opposite way. Robin let out a silent sigh of relief and crept backwards. He snuck around a vat and turned. He fell as he tripped over a round object. The busted pipe shot a screen of green steam into the air.
"BOO!" Robin looked up in horror. The woman had materialized out of nowhere and was once again in front of him, illuminated by the eerie light. She was more terrifying than ever. The boy screamed and leapt to his feet as quick as he could. He was being trailed closely and was desperate for escape. Another cloud of steam rose and again the woman blocked his path. "Where ya goin'? The party's just beginning!"
Robin made an abrupt about face and bolted in the other direction. He had to escape. He looked up. The cat and mouse or rather, cat and bird were nearing a set of small metal supports. Perfect parallel bars. There were several crates that would give him just the right lift... He made a quick fake to the left and darted right. Sure enough, it threw the woman off balance and gave him the badly needed time. He leapt onto the crates and then into the air.
Robin grabbed the first bar and completed a circle. He swung around again and released. With a half twist he reached out and grabbed the second bar. He circled twice and released, soaring through the air. He grabbed the third bar. By now the woman was on her feet and watching him from the crates. A twinge of admiration ran through her. The boy was good. Robin spotted the second story walkway and knew that if he could clear the next few jumps he was home free. He circled hard and released. His hands latched onto the fourth bar. The fifth and final bar was the farthest away. The boy circled three times and flew into the air. He reached out...
A shred of panic riped through Robin as he missed. Luckily one hand came into contact with the bar. He looked down and let out a soft whimper. He was directly above a gigantic vat filled with a boiling liquid. Since this was a glow toy factory he guessed that it was phosphorus. The boy reached up and secured his other hand on the bar. He looked across the distance and gulped. He had underestimated the final distance between the last bar and the catwalk. To make matters worse, the woman had started on the bars and was on the second. It wouldn't be long until he was caught. He took a deep breath and began to swing back and forth. He had to try. He circled one, twice, a final time... The woman had reached the forth bar and watched in horror at what the boy was attempting to do.
"Are you nuts? There's no way you'll make that jump!" She yelled. Fear and admiration raced through her veins. He was very brave for a boy of his age, but he was still too young to make that kind of jump. She readied herself for her own jump. Robin blocked out all other things. He closed his eyes and released the bar. He opened them to find himself flying to freedom.
"Almost there" He muttered, stretching out his arm to grab hold. A small grunt issued from him as he gripped the bar. His midsection also slammed into the bar knocking the wind out of him. Robin winced and a wave of dizziness came over him. He lost his balance and his grip loosened. All too late he realized what was happening. His arms flayed out to grip the bar, to no avail. A loud scream of terror ripped through his throat as he fell backwards.

Robin squeezed his eyes shut. This was it, the end. He couldn't bear to watch. He had been so close, he even had the bar in his hand... He could feel himself plunge downward as he lost his balance and fell backwards. He felt a loud scream tear through him, then suddenly...
The boy let out a startled grunt as he felt something wrap around the area where his cape and outfit met. He jerked up once and then down before dangling in the air, ominously suspended above the boiling green vat. He looked up and his jaw dropped in shock. The woman smiled down at him.
"You!" He exclaimed, with both joy and surprise.
"Hey kid, uh" The thief held fast to the bar with one hand and firmly gripped the back of his outfit with the other. She handled the situation easily. It was obvious that she had done this before. "Did ya really think I'd let you fall?"
"It crossed my mind" Robin said with a hint of sarcasm in his voice. The woman smiled at him again and then turned her attention back to the current problem.
"Grab my hand and climb onto my back!" She yelled. Robin did as he was told. He grabbed her elbow and was able to reach her shoulder. He slid his arms around her neck and held on for dear life. She reached up and firmly held the bar with both hands. "Hold on! I'll have ya out of this mess in a minute!"
He had no choice but to do as he was told. Yet, he felt somewhat safe with this woman despite the fact she was a villain. This villainness had not only saved his life, but risked her own in the process. There was something different about her... With a loud cry the woman swung backward and over the rail. Robin found himself upside down and then kneeling on the platform a moment later. He slid off her back and stayed down shaking. The woman stood and turned to him. She saw him trembling and felt sorry for the boy. The mysterious lady knelt beside him.
"You okay kid?" The villianness whispered softly. She slide a comforting arm around his shoulders. Robin's breath came in short, ragged gasps. He wasn't fond of close calls and that was a little too close. He looked up at the young woman and smiled weakly. The lady returned the smile, then giggled and playfully ruffled the boy's hair. "Ya know, you're not so bad for a dark knight"
"And you're not so bad for someone who's supposedly against us" He replied, tilting his head sideways and looking at her curiously.
"What?"
"It's just..."
"Just what?" the woman asked. She wondered if he was about to pull a fast one. Robin struggled to find the right words. Finally he spoke.
"You saved my life" A brief silence filled the air.
"So?"
"I mean, I know we're supposed to be on opposite sides... but you risked your life- to save me" Robin said quietly. "Most villains wouldn't give a second thought to leaving me"
"I'm not like most villains" She replied quietly looking away. Emotions clouded her beautiful eyes. The boy suddenly felt sorry for her.
"It just kinda surprised me that's all" Robin told her quietly. He studied her more intently, this time careful to note each detail. An odd feeling came over him, as if he'd seen her before. He was almost positive he had. She turned to him, the emotions gone but her eyes glowing with mischief and a huge grin.
"You'll find I'm full of surprises" She said casually. Robin giggled. He came to realize something at that moment. He liked the young woman. She was intelligent, caring, funny, not to mention a good fighter. Now if only she was on their side...
"So, how long have ya been in this business?" He inquired.
"What business?" She asked, clearly interested in conversing. Another unusual trait for a villain. She was quite open and friendly.
"Ah... You know... taking stuff" He said uneasily. She shrugged it off.
"Oh, I don't know. Just started really. So... how am I doing?" Robin was caught off guard by the question and tried to think of an acceptable answer.
"You're um... really good. Heh, um, you're really keeping us on our feet"
"Good. You guys need a challenge" Robin decided to change the subject.
"So... are ya gonna to tell me your name?"
"And take the fun out of guessing? No way!" She teased.
"Well they think it's Midnight" Robin said casually. They referring to Batman and Nightwing. By the way, he wondered, where were they? They should've been there long ago...
"What about you?" She asked, staring intently at him.
"Well, I dunno, but Ba- Batgirl thinks it should be classy. Midnight just doesn't fit that well" He replied quietly.
"Batgirl huh?" She asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Yea"
"By the way, where is she? I mean, doesn't she usually hang around with you guys?" the woman cast her hand towards him for emphasis.
"She has the night off" Robin seemed to trust her but wasn't going to mention the-
"So, no accident? No date? Just off?" She asked, pressing further. An expression of shock crossed the boy's face. Could she read minds or what? The sound of a breaking door caused the two to start. The woman was on her feet instantly and turned towards the sound. Uh oh, back up finally decided to show. Time to exit stage left even... "Look kid, it's been great. I'll see ya around"
"Wait!" Robin reached out and grabbed the back of her cloak. Maybe they could work something out. If only she'd stay... "They'll listen to me! I know they will!"
"Hey kid, I like you, I really do. But I don't think your friends are too happy with me right now. I know you've got good intentions but they'd rather throw me in Arkhym than hear me out. They just see me as another piece of Gotham trash. I'm sorry" It was hard to tell him no. His ocean blue eyes were wide and pleading, much like a begging puppy. He was so cute... She bit her lip. "Please understand"
"I understand" He muttered softly, then he let go. The woman helped her new friend to his feet and gave him a quick peck. He blushed deeply and watched her head for the door.
"Stay sweet kid. See ya around" She said half jokingly. Robin grinned.
"Yea. See ya" She thought a moment and stopped at the door and turned to him.
"Mirage" There was a brief pause.
"What?" Robin asked, slightly in shock. His grin disappeared.
"Mirage. That's what they call me" The boy's grin appeared once more.
"See ya later- Mirage" Robin said matter of factly. She turned and walked out the door. He ran into the hall and looked around. One again she had vanished into the night. A huge grin crossed his face. She certainly lived up to her name. "Wow"
Mirage was incredible. Not only was she beautiful, but smart, mysterious, and strong... He couldn't wait for Nightwing to meet her. He was gonna flip! Robin gave a disgusted sigh. Why were all the cute girls too old for him?
"Robin!"
"Robin?" Batman thundered, voice full of concern. He had lost track of his son after he had disappeared into a building. Nightwing continued to call for his little bro. He cursed under his breath. He should've been more careful than to fall for such an easy trap. If anything happened to Robin he'd-
"Hey guys! Over here!" The original duo spun around and spotted Robin several feet away in the hall. Both muttered a quick prayer of thanks and ran to the boy.
"Where've ya been?" Nightwing asked.
"Oh, just hanging around" Robin replied with a shrug. No pun intended.
"Why didn't you wait? We've been looking everywhere for you!" Batman thundered angrily. It seemed that the boy had no idea how much danger he could have been in or how badly he could have been hurt.
"You should've followed me! That's the plan! It always has been! I did my job so don't yell. I was expecting back up. What happened?" Tim shot back.
"Easy kid. We hit a few traffic problems. We had to find another way around" Nightwing explained, cutting in.
"So lemme get this straight. You wanted me to wait while the Batmobile was caught in a traffic jam?! Are you nuts?!?! You're the ones who always stress timing!" Tim yelled angrily.
"Look kid, he- we were just worried about you. Calm down ok? No one's mad at you" Dick shot a glance at Bruce, praying he'd take the hint.
"I just wanted to be brave" Tim whimpered softly. Bruce let out a loud sigh.
"I know. But being brave doesn't mean you go looking for trouble" Batman rumbled gently. Robin looked up at him curiously.
"Then what's the use of being a Dark Knight? I mean, that's our job isn't it? Looking for trouble so we can fix it?" Tim asked quietly. Bruce opened his mouth to say something then closed it. He had a point... Nightwing looked at Bruce who nodded. He quietly headed up towards the roof. Tim leaned against the wall and went on. "It's just... I hate being called a chicken"
"You're anything but a chicken" Bruce told him with a half smile. He placed a comforting hand on the boy's shoulder. Tim stared at the ground.
"But all the officers say I scare too easily. Look at you. You're never scared" He protested angrily. Bruce paused and turned away.
"I was today" Bruce started slowly. Tim looked up in shock. Did he just hear that? Bruce? Scared? "I was afraid- something might happen to you. Last night, when I heard Nightwing was down, I was scared then too. And when Barbara was in the accident, and many times before that. Whenever something happens to those who are close to me I get scared. I don't want to lose any of you. That's why it's important to wait. Robin, if anything happened to you-"
"Nothing will. I promise" Robin cut in. Bruce sighed irritably.
"You can't promise me that" He muttered gently. Anger bubbled up in Tim.
"Why do you always treat me like a child?! I can take care of myself!"
"You are a child" Batman replied. Tim scowled.
"I'm thirteen years old! I was raised on the streets! STOP TREATING ME LIKE A BABY!" Robin snapped. He turned and pounded up the stairs. Nightwing was leaning against the wall when Robin burst onto the rooftop. He called after the boy to no avail. After a few rooftops he finally caught up with Boy Wonder.
"Hey kid! Wait up!" Nightwing leapt into the air and pounced on Robin. Both hit the rooftop with a grunt. Robin struggled to get free.
"Lemme go! Uh! Uh!" Nightwing easily dodged the punches the boy was throwing. He picked Robin up by the back of a cape and held him an arm length away.
"Easy Sparky. I just wanna talk"
"I don't, uh! Wanna talk. And don't, uh! Call me, egh! SPARKY!" WHAM. A fist connected with Dick's nose as the last word exploded from the boy. A bloody waterfall cascaded down his face. Dick let out a grunt of disgust and dropped the boy. Robin went to sprint but fell to the ground in a tackle. Nightwing pinned him to the ground and held back the intense urge to pummel the crud out of his kid brother. He spoke with an edge in his voice.
"Whether you like it or not we're talking, so relax or else!"
"Or else what?!" Robin demanded hotly.
"Or else I give you a knuckle sandwich and say you tripped. That's what!" Dick snapped back. Usually he didn't mind Tim's attitude, but he had had enough of Barbara's lately and had a short fuse. Tim took the hint and gave in begrudgingly. Nightwing pulled Robin to his feet and forced him into a sitting position. The Boy Wonder folded his arms across his chest in a silent protest. Nightwing took a deep breath and went on, ignoring Tim's behavior. "So. You wanna tell me what's up or do I have to beat it out of you"
"He's treating me like a child" Robin muttered barely audible. Nightwing wiped a glove across his nose, staining his glove with the crimson liquid. He looked down at it and gave a disgusted grunt, then he tilted his head to the side curiously.
"What?"
"I said" Tim almost yelled, "He's treating me like a child!"
"Robin- you are a child" Nightwing said flatly. Tim scowled at him.
"No I'm not! I'm thirteen! I'm a teenager!"
"So? That's still pretty young. Don't take it so personally. For Pete's sake, I'm still called kid. It's not that bad"
"It's just- I dunno. It's hard to explain" Tim stuttered.
"He's only mad because he cares" Nightwing replied softly. Tim turned to him. "It's taken me this long to figure it out kid. Don't let it take you as long"
Dick got up and started walking towards the factory. Tim watched silently, then slowly got up and followed. In his heart he knew Dick was right. Bruce cared for them. He figured he owed Bruce an apology for acting up again. A half grin spread across Tim's face. One thing was certain, Bruce would earn every gray hair he'd get. Tim figured that he would get off with another warning since Barbara was out. Then his thoughts drifted back to his friend. He briefly debated sharing his encounter. No way. Then Bruce would never let him out of the cave again. And it would be more fun to let the guys figure out her name on their own. For once he knew something they didn't. He glanced around the factory rooftop and finally spotted his ride.
"So, Boy Wonder decided to return" Nightwing commented when he saw Tim. Bruce turned and watched the boy approach. He shot a curious glance at his elder son but decided that now wasn't the best time to ask about the dried blood was trailing from his nose. Tim took a deep breath.
"Look, I'm sorry about losing my temper... again. I'll try to get a better grip next time. I know that you're only mad cuz you worry about us" Tim reminded Dick of Thumper. It was the scene in which he was being scolded. A half grin formed. Dick could almost hear 'if you can't say something nice...' Then Robin gave his innocent look and asked, "Am I in trouble?"
"Not this time. Your lucky I'm in a good mood tonight" Batman replied casually.
"So, we miss much?" Nightwing inquired.
"Nope" Robin replied casually.
"You're kiddin' me"
"Nope"
"Aw, come on"
"I'm serious"
"Quit lyin' Robin" Batman watched the two go back and forth for a while, then headed for the car. It took about a minute for the two to get it, then they scrambled down the fire escape to catch up. Somehow the three were able to fit, then it was home sweet home. Bruce listened to the two younger begin to joke around and tease each other. Dick constantly antagonized Tim about the new teacher at his school who he favored and Tim responded with a comment about Barbara. A half grin crossed Bruce's face. Being a father in today's society always seemed to get a bad rap but being one was one of the best jobs in the world.

It was almost noon the next day when Alfred went to check on Ms. Gordon. He rang the doorbell and waited patiently. Bruce had informed him of last nights events and the two had talked until it was almost three the morning. By that time Dick had passed out on the couch and Tim had fallen asleep on the floor next to him. It made a cute picture. One that could used as bribery later on. After a few minutes Alfred rang the bell again. He heard some shuffling noises and the door finally opened. Barbara was still in her p.j.'s. Her hair was messy and her eyes were still glazed over with sleep. Alfred smiled thoughtfully. Only the teddy bear was missing. Other then that she looked like a little girl getting up for preschool.
"Good morning Ms. Barbara. How are you?" The butler asked courteously. Alfred was always the proper gentleman. She smiled weakly.
"Ok, a little tired. Heh, actually you woke me up" She replied, still half asleep. Alfred blushed in embarrassment. He didn't mean to wake her up. Then a thought occurred to him.
"Tired? What time did you go to bed last night?" He asked with concern. Barbara thought a moment, sleep interfering with her normal processing.
"I was watching the Last Crusade. Gotta love Indy" Barbara muttered with a sheepish grin. "It was on t.v. and started at twelve. With all the commercials it didn't end until three in the morning"
"Ms. Gordon, you're recovering from a terrible accident, you should-"
"Alfred, the car got totaled, not me. I'm fine really. It'll be returning to work soon. It's ok... I don't know why every one treats me like-" She stopped mid-sentence and remembered her manners. "Oh, silly me. I'm sorry Alfred. I don't know where my manners have gone. Can you stay for coffee?"
"I think I might" Alfred said while checking his watch. He smiled broadly. "Yes, I believe I do"
"Come on in Alfred. I'm really sorry. My manners..."
"Quite all right Ms. Gordon. No need for apologies" Alfred replied warmly. She was such a sweet girl. He secretly wished that Barbara and Dick would get back together. He rather enjoyed the thought of little ones pattering around the Batcave, though neither of the kids would approve of it for the time being.
The two friends chatted for almost an hour and a half. Barbara wanted to know how "the boys" were and everything about their mysterious new "friend." Alfred told her the story he got from the three during the little morning pow wow. Barbara burst out laughing when Alfred told her how Dick collided with Bruce. He had a funning feeling Dick would never live it down. They started to throw some ideas around on who could possibly be the new thief. They didn't get too far. Alfred asked for a few files and Barbara brought him into the family room to print them out. While they were waiting he noticed the fan was a little louder then usual.
"Ms. Barbara, that noise... is that a bad thing?" Alfred asked curiously. If it was broken, he could always arrange to get the new parts.
"Nah. It always makes that noise when it's on all night" Barbara shrugged it off. She stapled two pages together and handed them to the trusty butler.
"All night?" He asked, slightly confused.
"I was playing some games before the Last Crusade" Barbara blushed slightly.
"I didn't know you had games on this computer"
"It helps lighten the mood when I locate things" Barbara explained. "I don't spend twenty-four seven looking for the latest on Arkhym scum. I also like to have a little fun every once in a while"
"Are there any on the Batcomputer?"
"I take to the fifth" Barbara sad with a huge grin. It meant that she wasn't going to openly admit that the she and the younger knights had been able to sneak in a few games but they were there. Alfred chuckled. That's why Bruce always sent Tim up early...
"Anything else?"
"Oh, yes. Master Dick wanted me to give you this" Alfred reached in his pocket and pulled out a note. She scowled bitterly.
"What's this?" She asked sourly.
"I'm not entirely sure but he wanted me to tell you that he's terribly sorry for offending you" Alfred said gently. Barbara opened the note and began to read. Slowly her hard exterior softened. It was a sweet apology. A half smile crossed her face while she continued reading. He was always good at apologizing.
Alfred surveyed the room. It was very neat and orderly, nicely kept. A proud smile crossed his face. He couldn't have done better himself. There was a table near the couch with a pretty flower on it, dark purple in coloring. He guessed it was an African violet. There was also a book on the table. Under the table and almost hidden was a bag that appeared to be busting at the seams. A small piece of cloth was sticking out the top. He raised an eyebrow.
"Alfred?" The butler quickly snapped back to the present. He turned to the lady.
"Yes, Ms. Barbara?"
"Could you wait a minute? I have to get something" She muttered quietly. He nodded sincerely and the lady disappeared into the kitchen. Alfred carefully crept over to the bag to get a better look. Luckily he could always say he was admiring the African violet. He positively hated snooping. The former British Secret Service man kept an eye on the kitchen and the other on what was in the bag. His eye wandered momentarily and spotted a book next to the plant. The Iliad. It was one of Barbara's favorites. If he remembered correctly she had particularly liked the Judgment of Paris. He delicately pulled back the zipper with one hand. The cloth was stuffed on top of what he assumed was more clothes. The former agent gingerly pulled it aside to reveal-
"Alfred?" Alfred straightened up just as Barbara appeared at the door. He smiled politely and she eyed him curiously. "What are you doing?"
"I was admiring your African violet. It's very lovely"
"Um... thanks" Barbara replied with a raised eyebrow. Alfred smiled again. She looked at him strangely and handed him a pile of papers. An awkward silence filled the room. Alfred cleared his throat and decided to say something.
"Did you need my assistance Ms. Gordon?" He asked kindly. Barbara shrugged off the strange incident and handed him the note.
"It's for Dick" She muttered quickly. "Could you-"
"I'd be glad to deliver it Ms. Barbara" Alfred finished for her. She smiled sweetly at him. His watch began to beep angrily. He checked the time and sighed. "I'm afraid I have to leave. I'm terribly late and you know how Master Bruce gets"
"Yea, tell me about it" Barbara said with a laugh. It had two different meanings but shared a common understanding for someone they loved. One loved him as a son, the other as more of an father. Either way, Bruce's appointments were important to him, no matter what the business was.
"Have a pleasant day" Alfred called from the car. Barbara smiled warmly. Alfred was undoubtedly the greatest.
"See ya Alfred! You too!" She saw him wave and then back out. When he was out of sight she let out a small sigh of relief and closed the door.
*********************************************
Nightwing glanced at the clock on the wall. Ten to twelve. Ten minutes until their "friend" showed up. He clenched his fists angrily. This time he'd be ready for her. There was no way she would get the orb... at least not without a fight. The young man turned and studied the prized object. The amber butterfly glistened like the sun, forever suspended in time at the moment of terminating it's flight. It seemed to admit a soft, warm glow, in an orange color. It was very tranquilizing, almost hypnotic. Nightwing sighed and turned to look at the clock. Two minutes had past. This was going to be a long night.
********************************************
Robin was perched at the left back corner of the roof. The museum was smack dab in the middle of a giant maze created by the various shops and avenues of downtown Gotham. He inspected the streets with the eager eyes of a tiger, waiting for it's next meal. In a few minutes it would be midnight, Mirage's hour. The boy was sure that she would strike. Robin carefully got up and took his rounds. Once around the roof and no disturbances. He could return to watching the back for any activity. The boy let out an impatient sigh and put down the binoculars. Where was she?
******************************************
Batman roamed through the halls aimlessly, like a tormented phantom. All the gates were locked and the elevators were shut down. If she went through a window, he'd hear her or the alarm would let him know the floor she was on. The museum had the best security in Gotham, the heist would be next to impossible. Yet... the feeling of impending danger still haunted him. He tried to reprimand himself. None of them knew how good she was at fighting, it had all just been dumb luck. Batman clenched his fists. This time it would be different. This time she would meet the Dark Knight personally he vowed. All open gates lead directly to him. The clock in the main foyer struck twelve and twelve loud peals of thunder rippled through the halls. Batman froze and turned towards the sound.
********************************************
Nightwing glanced at the clock on the wall for what seemed to be the hundredth time that evening. Eleven fifty-nine and fifty seconds. He counted down silently. Ten... His body tensed... Nine... Relax, everything's fine... Eight... No, it's not... Seven... This was it... Six... He took a slow breath... Five... Could they handle her? Four... Yeah, they could handle her.... Three... Was he sure? Two... Not really. One... A distant roll of thunder echoed among the deserted halls, soon followed by eleven more. He turned to face the herald. Did it matter now?
********************************************
Robin was scanning the back alleys and streets impatiently. She could at least be a little early. The boy scolded himself the umpteenth time. No matter what way he looked at it she was still too old for him- but not for someone else... The Boy Wonder chuckled softly. A loud bong caused him to jump. He looked over his shoulder and down. Twelve Midnight. Robin suddenly realized that he was nervous. He had seen her move. She wasn't one to be taken lightly. He took a deep breath and scanned the streets. Any minute now...
******************************************
At the stroke of twelve Mirage peered out of the alley where she had taken refuge. Across the street was the fabled structure known as the Gotham Public Museum. The building was renowned for it's beauty. It towered over its surrounding buildings like a king. While a simple box in design, the decor was breathtaking. It seemed only a genius could have designed it. Four monstrous pillars stretched two stories, supporting a triangular structure. It's inside concaved gently to house one of the country's greatest Grecian murals. It portrayed the Judgment of Paris. A smile crossed the lady's face. The Iliad was one of her favorite books. The Judgment of Paris happened to be her favorite part.
The front entrance was adorned with solid white marble. On each story there was a small ledge. Gargoyles dressed in white stone stood sentry at their posts every ten feet. The entire building had been washed in a snowy bath. It seemed to shine in the dreary city. Over each window was a long triangular structure supported by half a pillar on each side. There were twelve windows, each had one of the twelve major Olympian deities and their symbols in the concave of the triangle. Mirage glanced around cautiously and then swiftly darted across the street. She slid behind the third pillar. The lady stared through the glass doors. The entire place looked deserted but she knew better then that.
Mirage slid her hand into her pouch and pulled out her nightvision binoculars. She scanned the entry way. Nothing. The woman replaced the binoculars and bit her lip thoughtfully. It couldn't be that simple... could it? No. She reassured herself that they were here. She walked to the door and pulled out a small item that resembled a Game boy. The young woman placed it against the lock. It's screen flashed and a smile flickered across her face. It was an electronic lock. And they call this a security system... She hit a button and an eight digit code popped onto the screen. A pad of numbers appeared below it. Mirage punched in the code and slid the door open effortlessly. This was shorter than picking the lock. If only the others could have been this simple... Before disconnecting it she typed in a command. The computer beeped twice. She removed the device and put it back in her pouch. All security systems off. Piece of cake. Now on to more important matters.
Mirage hesitated, then carefully took small steps until she was at the entrance of the "Great Hall." The floor was a light blue tile and formed a rather large plaza. She glanced around and realized she was the only one there. A puzzled, then mischievous look crossed the woman's face. What? No welcoming committee? She thought sarcastically. The lady stepped forward and looked around. She was a little wary about being in the open. Someone had to be there. Mirage quickened her step and closed the gap between herself and the other end of the room. She slid into the shadows and pulled out her night-vision binoculars again. She scanned the darkness and a soft gasp escaped her lips. The lady had been lucky she didn't scream in terror. There, several yards away from her, was the Dark Knight himself- Batman.
Mirage quickly slipped the binoculars into her pouch and pressed her body against a column. She hastily drew up her hood and became one with the night. She slipped into the hood, her eyes locked on him. His head turned and their eyes met. She drew in a soundless breath. Time passed slowly and it seemed like an eternity before he turned and walked away. She was trembling uncontrollably. Had he seen her? He had been looking in the opposite direction, yet... She bit her lip stubbornly and decided that she would just have to be extra careful. Each heist had been successful and completely, well, almost completely flawless until now and tonight wasn't going to break her streak. She quickly reviewed the way to the orb. The woman remembered that this one was a dark Amethyst. Then she cautiously glanced around and started off in its direction.

The path was simple. Turn left at the Natural Minerals display, go all the way through the Age of the Dinosaurs, then make a right. After climbing the stairs to the second floor go into the Ice Age. At the Woolly Mammoth take a left into The Land of Beginnings. After completing the journey through Mesopotamia work into the Indus Valley. Once there turn right. This brings one to the second flight of stairs. Proceed upward and arrive at the Old Kingdom. Turn left and work past the Pyramids. Take a right hand turn at the Sphinx in the road and that brings one to the Middle Kingdom. That was the tricky part. Go to the bazaar section and go right. After wandering around a few homes and soaking in the culture, turn left and go into the Temple of the gods. Take a right at Bast and stop at Ra. Turn ninety degrees east and stop when upon arriving at Seth. Turn until Path appears. Go straight, then take a left, where Anubis will be present. There take another left. At Orisis take a right. The exit of the Egyptian labyrinth is straight ahead, can't miss it. Take the stairs to level four... Mirage groaned. Maybe it wasn't so simple. She dearly wished she could use the elevator but that would give her presence away. After traveling through more of the Middle Kingdom she climbed the stairs to level five, where she paused momentarily to catch her breath.
Then Mirage cautiously stepped into the New Kingdom. She took more time to observe the treasures since it was new. The culture of the Ancient Egyptians had always fascinated her. The young woman wondered in awe at the life size recreation of Tuts tomb. The lady almost forgot to take a right at the plagues. She shook her head and refocused. She could always come back tomorrow. Mirage turned left at the ninth plague and climbed the next flight of stairs. She growled in agitation. Then she walked into Athens. Birth place of Democracy she thought with a half grin. She trotted past the Acropolis and took a right at the Olympic games. She turned into the Parthanon and turned right upon reaching Athena. The mistress of mystery took a left at Zeus and another at Aphrodite. Mirage stopped, then went back to observe the statue more closely. A casual grin crossed her face. Well, well, well. If it isn't the goddess of love. Wish I had your looks, then maybe life wouldn't be so lonely... The mocking smile disappeared and her brow furrowed. Was there really someone out there for her? There had to be. Her mother had told her so. Mirage let out a loud sigh and turned to leave when something caught her eye. The woman climbed onto the platform and pulled back the curtain. A thousand watt smile crossed her face. Finally, jackpot! With a relieved sigh she carefully pulled out the loose screws and slipped inside the shaft. The venting shaft was unusually large. Mirage was able to fit comfortably on all fours with a couple inches to spare. She crawled to the opening and turned left. Then a right, another left and...
"Aulp!" Mirage let out a started cry as the ground beneath her disappeared. Luckily she hadn't been going too fast and had stopped herself in time. The young woman slid to the edge and crouched. Then, in a swift, single movement she was air born. It almost resembled a shot from the Matrix. She easily closed the distance between herself and the cables. Mirage hooked her boots in an army like fashion and slowly began to climb. She passed level seven which skipped to the Hwang River Valley. It covered the dynasties of the Shang, Chou, and Chin. Level eight was the Han and Sui dynasty and a few exhibits on Ancient Japan. Level nine was the last of the dynasties and covered the Tang, Song and Ming. Level ten covered the Incas and Mayas, while eleven covered the Aztecs and other various South and Central American tribes. By now Mirage was starting to tire. Level twelve was on Ancient Arabia and Persia.
Finally level thirteen appeared. Mirage saw another vent shaft and pulled a small pen like object from her bag. She aimed it several inches above the vent and pressed a button. A small arrow deployed and sank into the wall. A small tug affirmed that the line was a safe one. The young woman took a deep breath and said a silent prayer. Then she jumped off the cable. She landed on the wall in a typical army pose and began her climb since she was several feet below the vent. Everything seemed to be perfect... until the sound of an elevator echoed through the shaft.
"What the-?!?!" Mirage looked down in terror. In a moment of panic the woman thought that she had been found and that she'd get crushed by the elevator. She began to go hand over hand increasing her speed. When she finally reached the vent she tucked her knees into the gut and swung inside. Then she did a half twist and hit the release button. The arrow snapped back into a pen. Mirage backed up slowly and watched the shaft. It slowly dawned on her that all elevators were still shut off and that it was only the fans turning on. A relieved sigh escaped her throat and she turned to proceed. "Ah!"
Mirage drew back quickly from the whirling blades of death. And I thought the Joker's place was tricky. Now how do I solve this problem... The vent was a three way. It went straight, to the left and to the right. She bit her lip and studied the situation. If I don't want to be sushi I'll have to plan a detour... Mirage let out a disgruntled sigh and turned left. This orb is turning out to be more trouble then it's worth... I highly doubt I'm even going to get paid... She turned right at a fork in the vent. The young woman began to wonder why the orb was in the Glory of Rome exhibit when it had nothing to do with the Romans. There was an English term for that... what was it? Oh yea, anachronism. Mirage turned right. She looked back and saw the fan. She smiled proudly. Am I good or what? She started forward and spied the end of the seemingly eternal vent system. The young woman stopped at the grate and peeked through the slates. A warm amber glow radiated from the center of the plaza. A dangerous grin crossed her face. She made it. She had finally made it.
Mirage glanced around cautiously. The room was empty. Is it possible they gave up? Would I really be so lucky? So far this trip hasn't been anything but trouble... could I actually have a break coming? She bit her lip and thought a moment. The Dark Knight never gave up. Mirage calmly slipped her hand into her pouch and removed the night-vision binoculars. She scanned the area again. Still nothing. She sank onto her haunches and thought a moment. Then the lady shrugged and gently pushed the grate forward. It opened without a problem. Mirage made a sour face. This place really needs a new security system... She landed behind a statue of Minerva.
The young woman cautiously peeked out. The orb was guarded by the statues of Jupiter and Juno. She glanced around a second time. Something wasn't right. Her eyes told her that it was safe but her gut warned her that her eyes were being deceived. Her own name and manner told her not to trust her eyes. The woman shook her head and crept out silently. It just meant that she'd have to be more cautious. Mirage was hidden by the darkness since the only light was the spotlight shining down on the orb. She froze at the light's outer rim.
The risk about to be taken was dangerously high. The woman wanted a second to think about what she was doing, to make sure that her decision was final. Once she began this, she couldn't back out. And if caught all she worked for would be in vain. Her eyes set with determination. Mirage knew that she couldn't back out the minute she told Joker she would take the job. She had to go through with it. A twinge of fear ran down her spine. The Dark Knights were sure to be watching her every move... but no one was there... There was always tomorrow night... No, not when I've come this far... Mirage thought stubbornly. She carefully proceeded forward.

The hooded figure cautiously stepped into the ring of light. Then it slowly worked its way to the case containing the precious gem. It scanned the room warily then removed a small tool from under its cloak. The sound of cutting glass echoed through the seemingly empty halls. A hand shrouded in black slipped in and pulled out the glowing ball of amber. The figure held it a moment, admiring its beauty. Then, very carefully, a pouch slipped out from the wrappings and the ball was placed inside. The figure smirked pleasurably. It was easy... almost too easy...
"Pardon me but- I don't believe that belongs to you" Mirage spun in shocked anger. Her gut had been correct. She was being watched. Nightwing was leaning against a statue of Apollo, an equally pleased smirk on his face. Her eyes narrowed.
"Well, if it isn't the Dark Knight's son. Where's your daddy little boy?" A cool, feminine voice hissed from the depths of the hood. A dark scowl crossed Nightwing's face. He hated being called little boy.
"Let's get a few things straight" Nightwing hissed coldly. He slid off the statue and started towards the figure. "First off, I'm not a little boy. Second, I don't need my dad. I can take you down myself. And third, I ask the questions. Got it?"
"We'll see about that" Mirage replied. The voice was unique. Low, but still feminine. From this he could tell she worked alone. It was confident. She was cocky. One to talk a lot. He wished he knew her skills but would have to wait on that one. One thing was for sure. This one wasn't any different from any of the other Arkhym girls... yet he couldn't help but wonder what lay under the cloak. Nightwing stopped several feet in front of her.
"If you hand it over now the court will still go easy on you. You can't win" the young man told her solemnly. In many ways he resembled his father and now it shown through clear as a bell. Again the woman smirked.
"Oh really? I believe you are, by far, are under-estimating your opponent" She shot back. "I will not only win but I will also get away with this completely"
"We'll see about that" Nightwing snapped angrily. She was proud as he suspected. Too proud. That would be her downfall. She decided to throw a curve ball.
Mirage gently strode up to the young knight and put her hands on his chest. Nightwing glared at her suspiciously. She paid no mind and traced the birds wings up to his well built shoulders. A delighted smile flickered across her face. He grabbed her wrists and pushed her away irritably. Nightwing wasn't sure what she was going to do and preferred to keep her at bay.
"You're right... You're no boy. On the contrary, you're quite a Man Wonder" Mirage cooed softly. Nightwing desperately tied to hide his shock but was unsuccessful. That wasn't exactly what he thought she'd say. She easily freed a wrist and ran her fingers through his raven hair. The tingling sensation returned and their eyes locked.
"You!" He muttered in shock. It was her- the woman who had called Batman the other night, the one who had disappeared into the alley when he awoke. The hood nodded. He let her go and she took a step back. Both of her hands went to the hood and gently lowered it. The young woman swept back the cape to reveal her somewhat Gothic outfit. Nightwing stared. He tried to find the words but his jaw just dropped.
"Not what you expected was it?" Mirage asked shyly. Her eyes seemed to radiate an ocean blue aura, while her dark hair brought out her best feature even more. Nightwing couldn't believe how hard his heart was pounding. She was incredible. Even better looking then Ivy... and that was hard to beat. She chuckled softly and gently pushed up his jaw. "What's the matter, bat got your tongue?"
"Not exactly" The young knight finally stammered out. She smiled shyly and giggled. He was cute, even better looking while he was awake. Then he snapped back into reality and realized what was happening. "You know, it's a real pity we're on opposite sides"
"Tell me about it" Mirage cast her eyes down. Did he actually say that to her? Was she actually having this conversation? She returned to the present. "I suppose you're still gonna try to catch me..."
"It's my job... sorry" Nightwing muttered sheepishly. A half grin crossed her face. At least he was nice about it... but he wasn't as easy as the boy. She sighed.
"Well, let's get this over with" Mirage muttered flatly. This wasn't going to be fun. Nightwing hesitated, then reached for her wrist. She drew back and scowled, her blue eyes flaming with an unearthly fire. For a moment a familiar feeling washed over him. Those eyes... he had seen them before... In fact he felt he had seen them quite often. This girl had a really nasty temper. One he probably didn't want to test. He shook his head and brushed the feeling off. Now wasn't the time to go off and think about where he'd seen her. He had to focus on the problem at hand. His eyes narrowed and his body tensed.
"Please, don't make the situation worse" Nightwing said gently. He was hoping for an easy way out. Her eyes narrowed and her jaw set in a stubborn lock. Her fingers rolled into a hard fist.
"We both know that I'm not going down without a fight. So let's just get this over with" Mirage shot back. He knew it was true. A fight was inevitable.
"Have it your way but don't say I didn't warn you" Nightwing said solemnly. For a moment the two stared, speechless. Then he took a step forward. She stepped back and to the side. It was obvious that neither of them wanted to attack first. Finally one made the first move.
Mirage bolted forward. Nightwing sprang to meet her. They hit the floor and rolled apart. Mirage was first to her feet. She sprang into the air and hit him square in the chest with a flying kick. Nightwing fell back and rolled to his side. She sprang again but this time he was ready for her. He rolled around and swung his leg into her stomach. He flung her over his head and she landed hard on her back. Nightwing pinned her arms and Mirage swung up her knees. They nailed him in the back of the head. The knight yelped and let go. The lady threw a fist into his nose and caused a red waterfall to run down the left side of the man's face. Nightwing let out a loud, menacing growl. Mirage pulled herself into a crouch and sent both legs into his gut. Nightwing flew into a statue of Mars, which teetered ominously. Nightwing sprang to his feet and straightened it. He turned to face his opponent.
"Ready for more?" Mirage taunted in a mocking tone. Nightwing ran towards her and sprang into the air. She swerved but got her jaw clipped at a last minute punch. She slammed into a statue of Diane and ricocheted to the floor. The woman rolled quickly to avoid a kick and sprang to her feet. Mirage slid to the right and stepped back. A sharp twinge of pain shot through her back. "Ouch!"
Mirage whirled around and came face to face with none other then... Cupid. The god of love himself. Nightwing couldn't hide an amused grin. The woman looked down and realized she had backed into a heart shaped arrow. She hastily turned the bow in the opposite direction and turned to face her challenger. Nightwing chuckled.
"What's the matter? Scared of a statue?" Nightwing teased, throwing in a hint of sarcasm. Mirage let out an intense growl.
"I'm not afraid of anything! I'm not afraid of Cupid! I'm not afraid of Batman! And I'm not afraid of you!!!" Mirage roared angrily. Nightwing shook his head.
"Yea, yea. Whatever. You ready?" He asked with a hint of boredom. Mirage narrowed her eyes and sprang at him. Nightwing slipped to the side. She landed and swung her foot around. It slammed against his jaw. He fell back and Mirage sprang. Nightwing thought fast and sent a foot into her gut. A loud cry escaped her throat as she crashed to the ground. The original Boy Wonder leapt to his feet and grabbed her shoulder. "It's over"
"Not quite" Mirage slipped to the side and ripped her leg up and out. It hit it's mark... right between the legs. Nightwing doubled over in pain. Mirage flipped and towered over him. The woman gloated on her victory. Nightwing glared at her coldly. Then a huge grin spread across his face.
"Forgive me..." He whispered softly. Mirage raised an eyebrow.
"For what?" She asked curiously.
"For this!" Nightwing rocked back onto his hands and sent both legs crashing into her stomach. Mirage slammed into the wall with a loud cry of pain. Before she had a chance to react, Nightwing firmly pinned her back against the wall. He grabbed both arms and struggled to maintain a good grip. The lady squirmed this way and that, hoping to get free. Mirage shot her foot out to trip him and arched her back, shooting upwards... directly into the knight's arms. Simultaneously Nightwing lost balance from her shot and was pulled forward. It happened too quickly. Neither of them were prepared for what happened next. Nightwing and Mirage turned to face each other in unison and their lips met.
Time froze in place. The two stared at each other in shock. Then Nightwing slipped his arms around her waist and pulled her close. Mirage slid her arms around his strong neck, returning the feeling in full. An eternity seemed to pass but it was only a few seconds. Mirage pulled back and gazed into his cool blue eyes. It had been a long time since she'd done that. It felt pretty nice... He gazed into her soft eyes, now clouded with emotion. It was like he could see into her soul and discover her countless secrets. Mirage realized what was happening and slid back. Then she quickly brushed past him and took a few steps. It was a mild shock that she had been released so easily. She tried to recover the damaging blow that had been taken. Now was not the time to go soft... Nightwing glanced at the ground a moment, then turned to her. The odd familiar feeling returned. He knew this girl... but how? Mirage kept her back to him. He approached her warily, unsure of what to do.
"You've got to admit there's something between us" Mirage cooed softly, still averting her eyes. She threw all caution to the wind and decided to play it up. She had nothing to lose. The lady turned and slipped her arms around his neck once more, taking in the pleasant feeling and gazing into the cool, sapphire eyes.
"Yea. The Law" Nightwing replied coolly, acting as if what had just happened meant nothing at all. Yet- he couldn't help feeling something for her. Something drew him to her. She was very... magnetic to say the least. That same odd feeling kept telling him something but he couldn't understand what it was saying. Time didn't allow for any more analyzing. Angered by the rejection, Mirage pulled back. She clawed her fingers and ran them across his face.
"Never trifle with the affections of a woman" Mirage hissed bitterly. Why couldn't he be like the boy? Why did he always have to be so stubborn? Nightwing pulled back. He swore under his breath and swung at her. She was good. Too good. The shot hit air and she laughed mockingly. "Quick, but not quick enough"
He shook his head to clear the confusion. By the time he saw what was coming it was too late. Mirage sprang into the air and completed a perfect roundhouse. The years of gymnastic training had paid off. The foot slammed mercilessly into his chest, sending him backwards. Nightwing hit the base of the statue of Venus. It rocked wildly and toppled over... right on top of him. He struggled momentarily before realizing that he was trapped. Mirage smirked arrogantly. Trapped by the goddess of love. The very thing he rejected. How fitting. She strode up to him. He would be there a while. She knelt down next to him and gave him a quick peck.
"You're good darling... but not good enough" Mirage cooed in a soft, taunting voice. She flipped over the knight and stood. Then she began to walk towards the exit. "It's been fun. Adieu"
"Next time- uh, YOU'RE MINE!!!" Nightwing roared angrily. He reprimanded himself for letting emotions get in the way of his job. He watched the mysterious lady disappear into the shadows and squirmed. It would take him a while to get free. The knight looked up and slammed his fist into the ground, growling bitterly. He quietly made a vow before returning to his problem.
"And there will be a next time"
********************************************************
Mirage made her way up the endless stairwells. Around level sixteen her sprint had turned into a hard panting climb. This'll never do she thought warily. At this pace I won't reach top until dawn. Then I'll never get free. She reached into her pocket and pulled out her magic gameboy device. The lady sat at the top of the level seventeen stairs and punched a few buttons on the illuminated screen. A map of the museum appeared on the screen and marked her position. She let out a loud moan.
Seventeen down, three more to go. I can't take another step Mirage thought despairingly. She glanced upwards and the light went on in her head. Maybe I don't have to... The lady typed a few things on her hand held computer and grinned. It would work. The last three stories shared the same stairwell and would take her to the top. In the middle of level twenty there was a door for maintenance that went to the roof. Once there she was home free. It's certainly taken me long enough Mirage complained inwardly.
Mirage reached into her pouch and pulled out the pen like device. She aimed it skyward and fired. It secured and she smiled. All aboard... The woman flew three stories up in a matter of seconds. Once at the top she swung to the landing. Mirage hit the release button and the arrow returned to the gadget. She put it in her pouch and an amused smirk crossed her face. Handy little thing. Never leave home without it... She cautiously entered level twenty and easily found the maintenance door. She rushed up the steps and onto the roof... where to her surprise and agitation she found Robin waiting for her.
"Not you again" Mirage groaned. Robin sighed warily. She realized that she wasn't the only one suffering from lack of sleep.
"Why are you doing this? You don't have to" He muttered softly. Mirage let out a loud, long sigh. She wasn't in the mood for this.
"Look kid, I've had a long night. I'm not up for this" She complained in irritation.
"Neither am I" a deep voice boomed behind her. Her face turned three shades paler then it already was and she whirled around. Before her stood every villain's nightmare. To make matters worse it looked like he wasn't in a good mood either. Robin's eyes widened and he gulped.
"Batman" Mirage gasped softly. His figure emerged from the dark doorway. Now she was in trouble. The young woman slowly backed towards the edge of the building. The Dark Knight slowly followed her. She froze at the edge. Mirage looked down and gulped visibly. A twenty story drop. She smiled weakly. "Nice night for a neck injury, huh?"
"It''s over" Batman growled dangerously. He tensed and readied himself for an attack. The lady's mind raced. She was out of options ... not quite. A dangerous grin crossed Mirage's face. She still had one final ace in her hands.
"I don't think so" Mirage hissed coolly. Her hand disappeared into her pouch. Robin turned pale. Could she really be a threat? Could she really be dangerous? She had seemed so gentle... so different. She wouldn't shoot them... would she? Batman took a step back. His first thought was to protect the boy. In a flash Mirage held a glowing ball of amber in her hand. The duo was both relieved and worried. That ball of amber was the Fourth Orb of Flight. "I still have a few tricks up my sleeve"
"Hand it over" Batman demanded coldly. The woman grinned. She knew that he would give under pressure. He wouldn't do anything to place a rare treasure in danger. It was her ticket to freedom. She dangled her hand over the edge ominously.
"It's very pretty isn't it? It would be a real shame if something were to happen to it..." She taunted mockingly. The duo watched her carefully. Robin panicked.
"Mirage don't!" Robin cried out desperately. Batman whirled around. The two stared at him in silent shock. He trembled gently, realizing the trouble he'd be in when he got back home.
"Mirage?" Batman inquired with a raised eyebrow. What was he talking-
"That's my name don't wear it out" The woman sneered mockingly. Batman turned to face his opponent. He decided that he'd ask his son about that later, at the moment there was something a bit more important to worry about. The Dark Knight narrowed his eyes.
"Drop it" He thundered angrily.
"Are you sure that's what you want me to do?" Mirage teased playfully. She knew that she had them in the palm of her hand. They knew it. She was as good as free. Her fingers loosened the grip so that it slipped down but didn't fall.
"You wouldn't dare" Robin hissed loudly. Now he was angry. He thought she had been different. She wasn't. She wasn't any different then the other ladies at Arkhym. The boy chided himself for actually believing that she had good in her.
"Oh really? I wouldn't be so sure about that. You want it? Go get it" Mirage sneered mockingly. With a graceful flip of the wrist the amber globe made a brilliant arch- then plummeted to the streets... twenty stories below.
"No!" Batman raced to the buildings edge and leapt over the side. Robin watched in shock and horror as the gem disappeared. He couldn't believe it. She would destroy a priceless treasure to get her way. Another wave of anger washed over him.
"Buh bye Bats" Mirage called sarcastically. She smiled and trotted to the opposite end of the roof. She decided a fast exit was a good idea. The lady quickly leapt over the side. Robin was furious. There was no way she would get away that easily. He sprinted after her and was able to catch up with her in the near by alley where she had taken sanctuary before the heist.

"MIRAGE!" Robin yelled angrily. The alley was dark and she was almost hidden. The retreating lady spun around in shock. She had been rummaging around in her pouch again. She looked up in shock.
"Robin?"
"How could you?" He asked accusingly.
"Kid what are you doing here?" Mirage asked in a gentle voice. It almost had a whine to it. He took a deep breath before going on.
"I'm taking you in. That's what" Robin replied bitterly. His eyes narrowed and he charged full force at her. She easily dodged to the side. He flew towards the ground.
"You really don't want to do that" Mirage told the persistent boy. Robin did a hand spring, flipped off the wall, and went into a flying kick. It slammed into the woman's stomach and she stumbled backwards. "Good shot kid..."
"Thanks" Robin snapped coldly. Mirage slipped something out of her pouch and threw it in the air. A flower pot from a near by ledge crashed into the boy's head and he slumped to the ground unconscious.
"But not good enough" Mirage finished coolly. She trotted over to the boy and sighed. "I tried to warn you. You didn't listen. And I was beginning to like you..."
Mirage thought a moment. The plan hadn't gone well at all. She didn't expect to be followed, now she had the boy to deal with. She found a scrap of paper and wrote a quick note. Then the lady gently removed Robin's cape. Just to play it safe she quickly bound the boy's wrists and ankles. There had been too many other surprises already and wasn't about to risk yet another one. Then she picked up the boy and slung him around her shoulders, much like a lady would wear a mink shawl. She finally was able to start towards her hideout. After a few blocks she stopped and decided to return her tool to the pouch. A black, metallic object was slipped into the pouch before she was on her way again.
************************************************
Batman leapt onto the rooftop a few minutes later to find it empty. His eyes narrowed and he swore out loud. She was gone. He looked around a second time and then swore again. So was Robin. He figured the boy was somewhere near by.
"Robin?" Batman thundered angrily. Now was a good time to question the boy about the previous night. He figured the boy had with held some information and now was a good time to get it. A small panic rose inside the Knight when no one answered the call after a few minutes had passed. He tried again. "Robin!"
"What's wrong?" Batman whirled around and saw Nightwing emerge from the maintenance door. He was bruised and thoroughly exhausted. A wave of anger washed over Batman.
"Where've you been?" Batman demanded hotly.
"Sorry but I was preoccupied " Nightwing snapped bitterly.
"With what?"
"With getting out from under Venus, that's what!" Nightwing growled irritably. Batman gave his son a 'huh' look. "I'll explain later. Where's the kid?"
"I don't know"
"What do you mean you don't know?! You're Batman! It's your job to know!"
"I'm not exactly thrilled about the current situation either" Batman retorted smartly.
"Do you think she took him?" Nightwing asked softly. His mentor didn't reply. Neither of them wanted to think about the youngest in danger. Batman checked the front of the building. His heart dropped.
"Nightwing" Batman yelled, his voice trembling gently. Nightwing felt sick. He knew that tone. It meant that something was really wrong.
"What is it?" Nightwing quickly joined his mentor's side.
"Look" A knot formed in the pit of the young knight's stomach. He followed the gaze of his mentor and saw a yellow and black cape fluttering in the breeze in a near by alley. For a minute time stopped. Then it hit them. Robin was gone... Something in Dick snapped.
"TIM!!!" Dick was on the ground and in the alley in mere seconds. "TIM!!!"
Batman closely followed. He grabbed Nightwing and clapped a hand over his mouth. The young man struggle wildly but his mentor's grip held strong. Bruce was worried sick about the boy but it was too dangerous to use their real names. He had to calm the young man down.
"Get a grip Nightwing! Losing it won't help him now!" Batman hissed softly. It took a minute for Dick to relax and finally get his head on straight. Then Bruce let him go. As his eyes scanned the alley, Nightwing spied a small paper scrap near the cape. He quickly picked it up.
"Found something" Nightwing croaked weakly. "A note"
"Read it" The Dark Knight commanded sternly.
"Good evening Knights. By now you've realized your feathered friend has disappeared. As you have guessed, he is with me. I give you my word, no harm will come to him. Tonight has already cost much. At least I still hold my prize..." Nightwing's voice trailed off and he glanced at his mentor curiously. "What's that supposed to mean?"
A look of rage swept over the Dark Knight's face. His fists clenched and a low, menacing growl escaped his throat. He ripped the ball of amber from his belt and looked it over. The low growl turned into a full blown roar as it smashed into the ground. Nightwing stared at his mentor in shock.
"Fake! It's a fake!" Batman screamed at the top of his lungs. Wrath coursed through his veins. She still had the orb and now she had Robin. He reprimanded himself for being fooled so easily. "When I get my hands on her..."
"Should I finish?"
"Yes"
"I wish there was time to explain. You would make powerful allies. Perhaps we can still reconcile our differences. Until next time, signed Mirage... Mirage? That's her name?" Nightwing asked curiously. Batman nodded, deep in thought. " So... what's the plan?"
"I'm not sure yet"
"What does she mean by reconciling our differences?"
"I'm not sure of that either but we'll let her explain" Batman replied. A grin had formed across his face. Nightwing raised an eyebrow. He knew that look. Bruce had something. Nightwing knew what it was. A grin crept across his face.
"Still got a tracker on him?" Nightwing inquired curiously. Batman nodded, a smug grin on his face. "Finally... it's about time we get a break"
"Ready?"
"Let's go" Nightwing replied happily. The two knights quickly made their way to the Batmobile and Nightcycle. It was time to bring their feathered friend home.

Mirage smiled proudly and placed the fourth orb next to its companions. It wouldn't be long before the rest of her plans would be complete. She hoped without any more troubles. A small bundle stirred on the couch. The lady turned and smiled. A boy's head popped out from under a blanket.
"Whe- where am I?" Robin muttered weakly. He was still out of it from the blow to the head. Mirage walked over taking a seat next to him. She ruffled his hair gently and she kissed his forehead.
"Welcome to my humble home Boy Wonder" She said quietly. Robin snapped into reality and struggled to move. His wrists and ankles were still bound tight. The nights events flooded back to him.
"You psychopath! When Batman gets his hands on you-"
"Into name calling are we? That's not very nice" Mirage said with a laugh.
"Your kind deserves it"
"Listen you little punk," Mirage slammed the boy's back into the couch and dropped her voice to a dangerous hiss. "I could have been a lot meaner. I have a short fuse I'm running on now as it is. Don't press your luck"
Robin glared at her accusingly and leaned back against a pillow. He reluctantly shut his mouth. At the moment he was at her mercy. Mirage let out a loud sigh. She liked him... she really did. He was just so impossible sometimes. She determined that no matter how rude he was that she wouldn't harm a hair on his head. Then another thought hit the woman. A terrifying thought. If the Joker were to somehow find her hideout... Mirage shuddered coldly and preferred not to think about it. There was no telling what that psychotic monster could and would do to her and the boy. She vowed silently he'd never get near Robin. Mirage bit her lip and thought a moment. She had to keep him quiet. She pulled a small, long piece of white cloth out of her pouch.
"What are you gonna do with that?" He demanded angrily. Mirage jammed the cloth into the boys mouth and tied the ends in a knot in the back. He began to admit grunts of protests.
"That" Mirage replied sweetly. Robin continued to grunt angrily, trying to speak in protest. She smiled politely. "Don't worry kid, I'm not after you. Just sit back and relax. You're gonna be here a while"

Alfred paced back and forth frantically. The three masters had left at eleven. It was now one thirty in the morning. Usually he would hear from them. Tonight he hadn't heard a word from them since they left. Alfred tried to reassure himself that everything was fine. That nothing had happened and that they would return home soon but something in the back of his mind kept bugging him. Finally Alfred couldn't take it anymore. He had to know if they were ok. Perhaps they had stopped in to visit Barbara... The faithful friend grabbed the phone and dialed her number. He waited patiently.
One ring. A second. A third... The longer it rang the more nervous Alfred became. Where was she? After the seventh ring he hung up. He scolded himself. The poor dear was probably in bed and too tired to get up. Yet... Alfred grabbed the keys and decided to check on her. Perhaps by the time he returned the masters would be back. During the drive Alfred was lost in thought. Even if she were in bed Barbara always answered, no matter what. He had suspected that she hadn't been following the doctor's orders... Alfred pushed on the gas petal. If Master Bruce ever learned of his speeding it would be a dreadful disgrace. He skidded into her driveway and shut the engine off.
Alfred made his way up the dark walk and politely knocked on the door. After several minutes of no response his fears increased. Something had happened. Barbara always answered the door. He quickly made his way around back and entered the secret garage where she kept her bat bike. His nerves were about to shatter. Perhaps she had fallen... The old friend found his way through her "cave" and up into the main house. He timidly stepped into her bedroom. She wasn't there. The bed looked as if it hadn't been occupied for several days. There was only one place left to look. The family room. He took a deep breath and trotted down the stairs. Alfred, trembling gently, entered the family room to find...

Ok, I promise to keep this short. For all the peeps from the old forum, this is the moment you've all been waiting for- Mirage's identity is revealed! Thank you for any one who has held on this long. Enjoy!
Alfred had prepared himself for the absolute worst. What he found took him by complete surprise and sent his mind reeling. What he found was... nothing. Everything was neat and in proper order. He looked around in shock. No one. Alfred ran through the rest of the house. It was completely vacant. Alfred went back to the family room and sat on the couch bewildered. Now something really wasn't right. He scanned the room and realized the duffle bag was missing. His brows furrowed in thought and he remembered something. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a crumpled piece of paper. It was a receipt. At the bottom of it, scrawled in black ink was an address. Alfred went to the computer and flipped it on. In a few minutes he had located the address. It happened to be an old appartment/warehouse a few blocks away from the police department.
He looked over the receipt and raised an eyebrow. Something was really not right. Since when did Barbara shop at Hot Topic? And what had that black wig been for? Slowly an amused grin formed across his face. It all made sense now. The wig, the clothes, the address... Alfred decided to go back to the manor. Perhaps the masters had returned.
**************************************************
Mirage was draped across a chair in the make shift family room. Robin just glared at her. She had decided to avoid conversation and was filing her nails. Both of them were bored out of their minds. She glanced over at Boy Wonder.
"Oh come on. Don't look at me like that" Mirage said with a slight whine. "I have to keep you tied up or you'd run"
Robin let out an angry squeak and continued to glare at her. She was right, he would run the first chance he got. Mirage sighed heavily and shook her head. If he'd cooperate then she could let him go. He was stubborn and refused to work with her. A phone rang in the other room. She smiled sweetly at him.
"Be right back, now don't go anywhere" Mirage called over her shoulder in a teasing voice. Robin scowled bitterly. Ok, that was *so* not funny... The lady pranced into the make shift kitchen and answered the cell phone. "Hello?"
"Good evening Miss. How are you feeling?" An older man's voice said politely.
"Um... Fine. Why? Should I not be?" Mirage was confused. For some odd reason this voice seemed familiar... a little too familiar. She thought a moment, then her jaw hit the floor. No. It couldn't be...
"I would think that a young woman who is supposed to be recovering should be in bed by now" The man responded kindly. Mirage's eyes widened. It could be...
"Recovering from what?" She asked innocently, her heart pounding wildly. There was a very good chance that it was him...
"You should know. I quote 'the car is totaled' unquote" He had set the trap, now it was just a matter of her taking the bait... The short fuse the woman had been running on had just been burned out. So far she had done just fine. They always treated her like a child...
"But I wasn't! I told you that! I told all of you that! Why do you all think I can't do it on my own?! I'm not a-" The woman stopped dead in the middle of her sentence. She had just blown it. Now he knew for sure. Mirage sighed irritably. "So... how'd you know it was me?"
"One, you've been unusually tired lately. Any one who has received proper rest is refreshed. Two, the scrap of crumpled paper I picked up the other day was a receipt. I reviewed the items. Since when do you shop at Hot Topic? Three, there was a black wig in your duffle bag. The other clothes must have been what was on the receipt. And finally there was the address. I used your search engines to locate the building. An abandoned warehouse is perfect for hiding out"
"You know Alfred, you're good. You're really good" Mirage said with admiration.
"I assume your engines must be on overload"
"Nah. Work'em like that all the time"
"You weren't watching the Last Crusade were you?"
"Hey, you're the detective, you tell me" The lady teased. Alfred chuckled gently.
"I highly doubt it... Will you answer one question?"
"What's that?"
"Why are you doing this?" There was a brief pause and for a moment Alfred feared that he had lost her. "Hello?"
"I'm here" Mirage muttered quietly. Her eyes clouded with emotion. "It's just... I hate being treated like a little girl. That's all I'm seen as. Helpless, weak, frail... They think if I get a small bruise I'll break!"
"I had a feeling that something was bothering you" Alfred told her quietly. He knew that 'they' was a reference to the three knights. Anger filled the young woman's voice.
"They don't understand! I'm not a China doll! I can take a few hits! Why do they treat me like I can't do anything right? I can do it on my own! I've proven that!"
"Do they know?" Again the line went silent.
"They don't know a thing" Mirage finally stated.
"You won't tell them..." It was more of a statement then a question.
"No" Mirage replied firmly. "They're smart. Let them figure it out"
"Will you be needing any assistance?"
"No thanks Alfred I- look, if I need help I'll ask. Please don't tell me you doubt I can do this alone..." Mirage moaned softly.
"On the contrary. You've done quite an excellent job. I was hoping maybe I could add to your success but I doubt you need my help"
"You really mean that?"
"Of course" The faithful butler replied truthfully.
"You really think I'm good?"
"Quite ingenious" Mirage giggled shyly. Alfred always knew what to say. "Just please be careful..."
"Don't worry so much. I'm doing fine. You know Alfred... It's kinda funny. For once in my life I finally feel like I have a little freedom. For once I didn't have someone looking over my shoulder or coming to my aid every three seconds. I felt like I was standing on my own two feet... that I was actually worth something..." Mirage paused, her voice filled with emotions. "For once I could be myself, not the dependent blindly obedient side kick that's always treated like a child but like a young woman who's clever, strong willed, savy, even kinda..."
"Alluring? Or as Master Timothy says, sexy" Alfred volunteered.
"Yea, that's it" Mirage muttered sheepishly. Her cheeks turned pleasant shade of pink and she was glad that no one could see her at the moment. "I mean, I actually felt good inside"
"You've always been good, you've just never been that confident. Now you know you can do it" The line was quiet. "Still there?"
"I think you're right Alfred. All this time I thought I needed someone to defend me. I knew I couldn't but deep down inside I doubted myself... until now. Now I know"
"I'm glad you realize what we've known all along. We knew you could do it"
"Thanks Alfred. It really means a lot" Mirage replied warmly. Suddenly a very loud, angry voice came in from the other room.
"MIRAGE! Let me go! Or else!"
"Or else what?" Mirage called back. There was a brief pause.
"Uh, hang on, I'm thinking! But you can bet it won't be good!" Mirage burst into a fit of laughter. Tim was so cute. Obnoxious at times, but cute.
"Is that Master Timothy I hear?" Alfred inquired, trying to hide his amusement.
"Who else would it be?" Mirage said through a fit of giggles.
"May I ask-"
"I already know what you want so I'll save you time. I was on the run and he caught me between a rock and a hard place. I needed to get away, so I knocked him out and took him with me" She explained calmly. "I had planned a clean get away but he kinda messed that up. I had to improvise"
"Oh dear"
"Yea, tell me about it. Not only do I have to put up with Tim but now I also have to figure out what to do with him" Mirage muttered, casting her eyes towards the family room where the boy was. She wasn't too thrilled about dealing with him at the moment.
"That could be a problem..."
"You're tellin' me..."
"Well, it's getting rather late"
"Yea, and I got a kid to take care of" Mirage muttered with a sour face. She heard Alfred chuckle softly in the background.
"One last thing"
"What's that?"
"Could you do me a tiny favor? Just one?"
"Depends on what it is"
"Could you let Master Timothy go?" Alfred asked politely. He knew the answer.
"You're kidding right?" Mirage asked in disbelief. It was impossible. The kid would squeal on her. He'd never listen. Then they would find her.
"No. Actually I'm not. It would be such a nice break for all of us"
"Sorry Alfred, but no can do. We know he'd talk"
"Well, I understand. Just thought I'd ask" Alfred said innocently. He paused a moment and smiled. "One quick thing. Do you know if Bruce or Dick have fixed the tracker on Master Timothy's belt yet? I heard it broke the other night"
"Alfred, they haven't let me anywhere near them and I've been kinda busy lately. How would I know if... if-" Mirage stopped dead in the middle of her sentence. Her eyes widened as she suddenly realized her mistake. She stopped herself from swearing out loud.
"Well, I must go. Have a pleasant night" Alfred said quickly. His job was done. He had given her all the help she needed and he was satisfied.
"Yea, you too. Oh and Alfred?"
"Yes?"
"Thanks for everything"
"Think nothing of it my dear" Alfred replied with a warm smile. Then he hung up. Mirage smiled happily. Good old Alfred. He always knew how to help without making it obvious. She let out a small moan and decided to face the problem at hand. She knew that she had to hurry. A wicked grin crossed the woman's face and she stormed into the family room.
"Hey kid! How'd your gag get lose?" Mirage snapped as she entered the room. She walked over to her pouch and threw the phone in. Robin scowled bitterly. She moved to the orbs and began placing them in the pouch.
"You'll find I'm full of surprises" The boy retorted hotly. Mirage slipped the last orb in and smiled thoughtfully. He had used her line... She got up and trotted over to the couch. The lady also slipped something under the cloak. He scowled as she took a seat next to him. Mirage smiled warmly at him and began to smooth out his hair in a sister like manner. Ten degrees of tension melted off his shoulders but his eyes still flashed with the ferocity.
"You ok kid?" She cooed in a soft voice. It seemed to calm his nerves.
"I guess. A small headache other then that I'm fine" Robin said while glaring at her.
"Sorry but I had to get away. You understand, don't you?"
"Whatever"
"Robin" Mirage muttered softly. He looked up at her gently glowing eyes. "Don't take it personally. I would have done it to anyone"
"So?" He snapped sarcastically.
"I like you. You're different. You're not like them..." She said quietly, a hint of sadness in her voice. She knew that Tim was the most trusting.
"You're supposed to be different" He shot back accusingly. Mirage looked at him in shock. So that was his problem. She looked outside warily. He was stalling.
"I am"
"No. You're not. You're just like the rest of Gotham scum"
"Look, if I was like the other 'Gotham scum' you would be dead by now"
"How so?" Robin demanded.
"My boss just called"
"Boss?"
"Yea boss. I got one too" Mirage paused a moment. "He told me to get rid of you"
"So do it" Robin muttered bitterly.
"I don't want to. I really don't it's just... boss's orders"
"Do it and get it over with" Robin replied dryly. Inside he was shaking like a leaf. This was the key. This was how he'd know if he could trust her. Mirage sighed heavily and slipped a dagger from her cloak. Robin gulped softly and closed his eyes, praying it would be quick. He felt a small tug at his ankles and then at his wrists, expecting the pain of a slow death of bleeding to be excruciating. Then a thought hit him and his eyes flew open. He looked down and saw he was free. Mirage smiled at him. The boy looked at her curiously. "I don't get it"
"I'm letting you go, what's not to get?" Mirage asked with a small laugh. Robin smiled broadly and threw his arms around her neck. A large car and motorcycle pulled to a stop outside. The hug took her by surprise at first, then she smiled. "You're welcome"
"You really are different" Robin pulled back and sat down. Two shadows quickly passed by the window. Mirage didn't notice.
"I already told you that" She teased. Robin smiled weakly. "I want a minute lead"
"Ah... right... See ya" Robin muttered sheepishly. This was not good. She gave him a quick squeeze and tossed the dagger to the ground. She trotted to the sill and turned to the boy a final time.
"See ya around-"
"Sooner then you think!" Mirage turned just in time to be thrown to the ground. Nightwing loomed over her, a smirk on his face. Robin gulped softly. This was definitely not good. A large, ominous shadow appeared beside Nightwing. This was bad, this was very bad. Mirage sprang to her feet and stared at the two before her. She couldn't take them. If she hurried there was still another way out... She bolted towards a door at the end of the room.
"So, we meet again... Sorry love, but I'm afraid this will be settled another time" Mirage growled over her shoulder. Nightwing scowled and followed her. Batman hit the floor and Robin thought quick.
"Am I glad to see you" Robin trotted up to his mentor's side, a huge smile on his face. Batman glared down at him. The smile disappeared. "What?"
"We have to talk" Batman thundered hotly. Tim cringed. He was in trouble. He glanced towards the other room. At least this still gave her a little time.
********************************************
Mirage sprang into the air and landed in a crouch. Perhaps she should have been nicer to him when they first met. She had forgotten how big first impressions were. The woman sprinted forward at hearing the knight close behind. Mirage turned and skidded to a stop as the ledge dropped dangerously. She looked down and moaned. She turned to see Nightwing several feet behind her, watching her every move. On ground level there was still a chance of out running him...
"I know what you're thinking, it's not worth it. There's no way you'll survive a fall like that" Nightwing informed her. Mirage looked down and back at him. She had planned it so well. Not much of a choice... or was there?
"It doesn't matter now anyway, I'll just go to jail..." She had to try one last time. If they discovered her secret there was not telling what they'd do. "That is if I even make it to the trial..."
"If you cooperate it'll be-"
"You don't get it. I can't win. If I jump, I'm street slush. If I talk, he'll kill me..." Mirage let a harsh laugh escape her throat. Now wasn't the best time to try out her acting skills... Then again she didn't have much of a choice. "Actually it doesn't matter at all, he's going to kill me once he gets these any how"
"Who? Who will kill you?" Nightwing asked anxiously.
"You'd like to know, wouldn't you? Pity you'll never know" The woman sneered with a cold grin. She took a step and plummeted to the ground below. Mirage hoped she knew what she was doing.
"NO!" Nightwing instinctively dove after her without a second thought. He miraculously caught up with her several stories down and slipped an arm around her waist. He pulled out a spare jumpline and fired. The thing secured and the pair glided to a near by out cropping one story up. Perfect for a quick escape. Mirage was shaking all over but had a huge smile on her face. The knight let go of the line and helped sturdy her. "You ok?"
"Yea, I'm fine. Thank you for saving me"
"It's in my job description" Nightwing replied coldly. "That wasn't smart"
"Sure it was"
"How so?" The knight asked curiously. He carefully slipped out a pair of handcuffs. The lady didn't seem to notice his move... for once.
"You see, I knew you'd do that"
"Do what?"
"Go after me like you did" Mirage continued to look at his eyes but noted the movement of his hands. He was still too close for comfort and wasn't one to be fooled twice. She would have to move quick if she wanted to escape.
"What made you so sure of that?" Nightwing carefully observed her every move. He was sure she noticed the vacant alley several feet away but a few seconds more and he'd have her. Mirage tried to think of an acceptable answer.
"You're predictable" She cooed softly. Mirage knew this was the time to act. She slipped one hand up his chin and the other went to his wrist. Their lips met for the second time that night. Nightwing wasn't going to be taken so easily. He grabbed her free hand and went to free his right hand which held the cuffs. Mirage thrush her knee upwards and for the second time that night placed a perfect shot to the groin. The cuffs dropped and Nightwing doubled over in pain.
Mirage quickly slipped down and pulled his arms behind his back, with some trouble. The cuffs clicked into place, giving her the desperately needed time for escape. She looked up and cringed. Two shadows emerged onto the ledge. She had to move. Mirage ran to the edge of the outcropping and somersault off. She made a perfect ten landing and bolted to the alley. She stopped at it's entrance momentarily.
"I owe you one Nightwing. I promise I'll make it up. Tomorrow" Mirage looked up nervously. Two jumplines fired and her heart pounded wildly. Get outta here girl what are you waiting for.... Nightwing scowled and felt for the release button.
"Yea right"
"I always keep my promises" She called out, then she slipped into the darkness. Nightwing watched her go and grunted bitterly. Now he'd have to explain to Bruce how she got away... again. Robin landed several stories above him and peeked over the edge.
"Hey Nightwing, are you all right?" Tim called sheepishly. Dick glanced up at him.
"Yea, I'm fine"
"Did she get away?" Tim asked, a glimmer of hope in his voice.
"Yea" Dick muttered in disgust. Tim smiled and pulled his fist back.
"Yes..." The boy muttered softly.
"I heard that"
"Oh, heh, heh. Hi Batman" Tim looked up and grinned sheepishly. Dick chuckled and pressed the button. The cuffs hit the slab with a soft clink. Above him the duo continued to talk. Dick grabbed the cuffs and rose to his feet, going over what Mirage had said. She had said so many confusing things. Who was the person she kept talking about? And why was she saying he'd kill her? Nightwing safely tucked the cuffs away. And tomorrow... There was still one orb left. He sighed heavily and looked at the unusually clear sky. All the mysteries would all be clear tomorrow.

OH MY GOD! That was AMAZING! I wouldn't have had expected her to be Mirage in a million years! But why would she want to risk everything like that? Was she going to return the orbs, later? I have so many questions. Please post the next part soon!
Sincerely, Cathy
P.S. Poor Tim! He was so cute in this part.
Anyway, since Nightwing dated her, why wouldn't he recognize who she was, when she kissed him? He is that thick-headed?
More soon, PLEASE!

How completely awesome was THAT!!?? I never would have guessed it! But it's about time Babs stuck up for herself! She's gotta prove that she's just as good a knight as they are! And she totally duped 'em, too! HAHA! That was great! Good work!
