View Full Version : Why is Power Rangers "Popular".... but Not?

I don't get it.
Okay, the show's been on for about 10 years now. And I don't know any American action "children's" show that has lasted that long... consistantly.
Over in Japan, word down the wire is that Sentai(Japanese Power Ranger, stuff.. http://www.classichero.com) was the number one selling toy, even beating out Gundam!
As any die-hard PR fan knows, sure the show was in the dumps for a couple seasons. And has had more than its fair share of junk seasons, but alot of these episodes happened with the original cast that people swear by!
In Space, they made a comeback that no one saw coming and have had far more cool episodes since the new more Sentai like format.
Show's production value shot through the roof, direction, action direction and writing grew far superior than what preceded it in the oringal first seasons.
Only show I've seen make such a jump in quality was Transformers: Beast Wars, but that wasn't consistancy..... and it plummeted when Beast Machines hit the air.
So, I don' get it. How can a show last this long..... be this succesful and only have improved vastly in quality, but when you talk to just about anyone it's still unpopular and uncool to like the show.
The Teenage Muntant Ninja Turtles haven't done half as well, but somehow they still seem more popular?
How can a show last 10 years, be hugely financially succesful, and improve in stories, story lines, direction and special effects, yet still be....... "unpopular?"

In today, out tommorow, my friend. Entertainment is an ever-evolving fad. How is it Michael Jackson can still be herald as the King of Pop when his last album failed miserably and an Icon when his numerous surgeries have changed the look of his face forever to say nothing about the allegations of pedophilia? The industry is such a contradiction sometimes.
Often, as may be the case with Power Rangers, when a network a has a desent show that pulls in medocre ratings when all of there other shows are terrible, they'll keep putting money into the desent show.
As for Power Rangers in Space - I'd never watch it. There's a limit to how obsurd a show can get. The whole thing used to be cool, in it's own campy way. Now, they've gone back in time, across the galaxy - I hate to tell you this, but it's cheesy to 90% of the population - which is why no one is responding to this thread. I liked the first few episodes, but I grew out of it and haven't given it a second thought since. How are the Ninja Turtles still popular? I've no idea!

I never liked The Power Rangers at all. The shows production values sucked anyways. However, I'd like to see the Power Rangers take on The Superfriends, or Rita Repulsa's minions against The Legion Of Doom. Just for laughs.
Don't Be A stranger! Kick The Ranger!
Don't mind if I do!

Yeah, but its ratings are't mediocre. It still tops and they've made so much money on the show that they're spending even more money on it.
As for production value... I'll not argue that point. If you think it sucks then either you haven't seen the show in the last six years or will refuse to see any of the shows merits based soley upon it being under the title of Power Rangers.
I mean, blowing of the show to simply say they're in space or traveling back in time is like saying Batman Beyond is stupid because all it's about is some kid in a flying mouse suit.
As for Michael Jackson, well.... his last album may have failed and his face might be getting worse, but PR's last outing was a critical and financial success!
As f- eh, I always start my paragraphs with "As for...." I gotta stop that.
Pertaining to the show being cheesy..... well OF COURSE it is! All classic superhero stuff is cheesy. TMNT? Even the concept of Transformers to anyone who didn't grow up with it will having them rolling their eyes and scratching their heads.
If I want something closer to being serious I watch Farscape(obviously) or Angel.... or Boston Public.
If I want some high flying, monster smashing, "You'll never get away with this!!!!" action..... I watch Power Rangers, which is better than people give it credit for. Stunts and martial arts alone are worth the price of admission.

I enjoy all sentai. "Cheesiness" equals entertainment to me. I can`t think of any show or movie as "stupid" since everything people consider stupid I find incredibly funny. The more ridiculous something is, the better. I love some of the sillier monsters in PR, Ultraman (Which i`ve only seen a couple times, but Ultraman Tiga is coming! Yay!) and Kamen Rider.

I for one, am not into cheese.
As for Power Rangers, you defend your point of view valiantly. However, when I was referring to a show that only get medeocre ratings, I was not referring to Power Rangers. As for not seeing it in the past six years - you're right...and I don't intend to. I can cling to my own childhood shows, thank you and you can cling to yours.

Thes how has been out in Japan since the 1970's and i think late 1960's.... My guess is because it's seen as more of a little kids show, so while it may be popular most people won't admit to watching it. It was HUGE when I was in like 5th grade but now with me in my Junior Year of HS ..It's just not soemthing you talk about.. And in the circles of people who are into that kind of stuff the show has dropped in qualitya nd like the Simpsons even when they improve people are not willing to forgive and just forget.

I was never that much of a fan, even though I watched it very long ago, don't even remember when.
As for the topic, most people say it is old and not that good. The reason the ratings aren't awful is because those are probably the same people who watch the show.

No.. TMNT..Is less pop..because it's um not that popular any more. It's vintage kind of. Like if I were to go to school and tell all my friends about the new show, they'd be all like "Really ?" and actually check it out as oposed to PR, where as they'd be like.. "So ?

I personally liked mmpr - zeo, but after that it start to suck to me. I think people including myself who were fans of the shows got tired of constant power changes and cast changes. In the mmpr- zeo years, the acting was much better because the show couldn't dazzled with high quality special effects. I also think that power rangers were hurt by being surrounded by a weaker lineup after X-men and Spider-man got cancelled. Also some of the Fox afflifates stop showing the weekday afternoon lineup. Many fans missed out on a large portion of the zeo episodes. Many fans also didn't like power rangers turbo the movie and series. Once the original cast members: Jason, Zack, Billy, Trini, and Kimberly left many of the fans left because their favorites characters left. Tommy, who was six ranger finally left and show begin to slide. My friends and I tried to watch the other shows, but it just wasn't the same without the original five plus Tommy.

Didn't Billy go to Aquitar which was the home of Alien rangers of Aquitar and let that 12 year old become the blue turbo ranger?

I hated power rangers from the start ,simply because I'm not a fan of sentai (I was 1st exposed to it when I saw jetman, which I hated), although I did like the kive action japanese spiderman. It was'nt until I saw power rangers:lost galaxy that I actualy watch and enjoyed a full, not to mention, every single episode of a power rangers season. Both the story and action/fight scenes, as well as, the special effects were great and a heck of a lot bette then previous episodes of the series. Since then I have been kinda hooked on the show (lost galaxy and everything that follows it).

Personally, I think that PR has come a long way from what we all know and love as "The Cheesy Old Days". I remember watching the series from "Day of the Dumpster" and seeing the old team in action as much as other people. I even still have some of the old Zords up in my closet from those days! (I only have the Thunder, Ninja, Shogun and Zeo for those who want to know) But towards the end of Zeo and around the time of the Turbo movie, I realized that PR was just the same thing over and over again with no progress and little the same from the beginning. And at the same time, I was slowly beginning to watch Sailor Moon and enter the world of anime. I never saw either the Turbo movie or the series premiere of Turbo, and that was that.....
At least until JC from the CNX board coaxed me to watch PRTF. And what I saw was awesome! The series had started to tap into the Sentai roots of the original series and made it into a more authentic version of the shows. Sure it was still cheesy as heck, but the stuff the Time Force Rangers went through would have been unthinkable in a way with the old way. These were complete start-to-finish stories, not continuous ad-infitnitum slop that became trite. The amazements continues with Wild Force, but I am forced to watch that on ABC Family on Fridays because of my love of the old Spider-Man show that airs on Saturday morning.

Power Rangers debuted in Fall of 1993. Back then it was 5 rangers (Jason, Kimberly, Billy, Token Asian:Trini and Token Black:Zack...and yes I had to say that). They were lead by Zordon, a big blue head in a tube and his robotic assistant Alpha. The Power Rangers had spent their time fighting the evil clay minions of Rita and protectd their home Angel Grove. I remember as an 8 year old watching this show and loving every minute of it.
Then we go into season 2 and the introduction of Tommy. Tommy was the new coolest green ranger. He had a special Dragonzord and he had a cool flute thing to call it with. I remember as a 9 year old that this was ultra cool.
Then we enter Power Rangers Zeo. Rita is now married to lord of the Galaxy Lord Zed. This would produce new minions for the PR's to handle. I think this is also the first time a major cast change happened. Jason, Trini and Zack both left the show and were replaced by 2 new actors and Tommy replaced Jason's spot as leader. My interest started to decline now, as I started to find the Power Rangers to become repetitive now. But the Movie that came out at this time was cool though.
Then we enter Power Rangers Turbo and its movie. I completely scrapped Power Rangers because I didn't want to go through another cast change and have some kid become a ranger. Plus the zords became cars now. It didn't make any sense to me. The only consistent thing on that show was Bulk and Skull, the 2 comedy relief.
Then we get more cast changes and stuff when we are introduced to "PR in Space", "PR in the Lost Galaxy", "PR Time Force", "PR Lightspeed Rescue" and now "PR Wild Force". This stuff gets repetitive now. Plus I really missed the original cast and the original strorylines. The Power Rangers had changed into a monster and now I'm really missing the old stuff. I was really excited when Fox had that Power Rangers O-T-O thing where they replayed all the old episodes for the last time. Seeing Billy for the first time in years almost made me cry.
Maybe I'll give PR Wild Force a try, but I'll never forgive the Power Rangers for changing as many times as they did. If you get to be a ranger now in days, you are guaranteed a season...but then you are quickly let go because the producers want to do something different.
___________
Now I close this post with a Power Morph:
Zordon: Angel Grove is in trouble!
Alpha: Ay-eye-eye! Rangers, you have to do something!
Jason: Alright guys, ITS MORPHIN TIME!
*The Mophing screen shot comes on*
Zack: Mastodon!
Kimberly: Pterodactyl!
Billy: Triceratops!
Trini: Saber Tooth Tiger!
Jason: Tyrannosaurus
*End morphig screen shot*
Tommy: Awright, its my turn.
*Tommy plays his flute. We see stock footage of his Dragonzord emerging from the depths of the sea*

I was in Kindergarten or First grade when Power Rangers first aired and I like the dinosaurs, the ninja, and the shogun then I lost interest when they went to Zeo cause I got sick of the changes, then I kinda regained interest when they went to Turbo and then the beginning of space (cars and space, two of my favorites subjects) but then I lost interest in it again.
I was even so interested in it at one point that my Mom made a very cool White Ranger costume when Tommy became the White Ranger and it seemed like I was the only person in my town to go as the White Ranger for Halloween.
One thing I want to know though, throughout the whole space thing, did they EVER mention the Aqua Rangers again? Or the Mantis dude? The aqua rangers were pretty cool, and I liked that one series with the alien guy who was Mantis something.
As for how it has stayed popular, well kids are kids and I'm sure there are alot of kids out there who discover Power Rangers and like it due to the Zords, the karate, the fights, and the non-frightening monsters.

Aquitar Rangers were seen one more time in "Count Down to Destruction", in which all the PR badguys and good guys came back for one last humongous battle!
Arguably the best Power Ranger episodes EVER!
You got to see an Aquitarian one more time during the first season of Time Force really breifly as a fond wink to the fans.
Billy left because he was sick of doing the show and wanted to move on with his career. So he didn't even show up for his final episode. Instead they used an old man and some really bad reused footage and a voice over.
As for the Ranger repetitiveness, I felt it too. After Jason left Zeo and the coming of Turbo I openly dissed the show to the friends I once defended it to. I even so that horrible Turbo movie in the theatres. It sucked! First movie tho was pretty damn good.
Anyway, with the change of characters and the coming of In Space the changing powers for no reason plot came to a final and welcome end.
It's not repetitive really. You get the same concept of a team of fighters, but with new casts and storylines!
Wild Force for me has started off really slow. Not really liking it that much. But with this Lunar Wolf Saga going, it's starting to get pretty interesting.
For those of you who miss the old Rangers, there's suppose to be a Ranger Reunion episode and Tommy's already signed to come back.
For those who miss PR OTO, they got the Best of Power Rangers airing Sunday mornings now.
Personally, those old episodes make me wince, but I'm really looking forward to when they start re-airing In Space through Time Force. Got me some episodes I wanna get on tape.

There never can and never will be a perfect PR reunion. Thuy Trang is gone. Just as the death of Lennon prevented "The Beatles" from ever being true again (except on this), so has this prevented from PR truely getting together again. (they better do a memorial to Trini if they make this special)

Part of the reason I stopped liking the earlier seasons. They just tossed 'em away.
Check out Japan Hero (http://www.classichero.com) and you can check out Sentai footage of what the next Power Ranger series is going to be.
Right now over there, the show called Hurricanger is being aired and it's ninja-based action. Some speculation says that this might bring back Ninjor....... which I hope not. His voice pissed me off to no end.
But, yeah... next season brings back Ninja Power!

I can't understand the original actors. Billy said he want to move with career and was tired of power rangers. Then why did Billy keep coming back. Amy Jo Johnson (Kimberly) said that Power Rangers ruin her career! If it wasn't for Power Rangers Amy Jo wouldn't have had a career. Another thing Jason came back as the Gold Ranger in Zeo so why did he leave in the first place. I have a question. If they are going to do a Power Rangers reunion then who going to be the Yellow Ranger since Thuy Trang unfortunately passed away? Who will it be Aisha or the other black woman who play the Yellow Zeo Ranger? I have another question for everyone who is watch Power Rangers Theater. Does it seem that they are running through the episodes rather quickly or is it just me? I mean they the skip the evil Green Ranger storyline and pick after he had already become good and joined the rest of the team, when Jason,Zack, and Trini left, they skip the introduction of Aisha, Rocky, and Adam, and they skip the introduction of White Ranger who was Tommy. I guess ABC Family is assuming that everyone is already aware of the changes?

Billy hasn't come back since he left. He was going to be the Phantom Ranger, but at some point along the way he didn't want to do it anymore.
The origial three left for good reasons.
At that time PR was raking in the dough hardcore. Saban was basically an instant millionaire off of these kids and he was still infact paying them their original salaries of extras. They derved more and they new it. So they left!
Jason really wasn't finding work elsewhere so he came back for a little while.
As for the PR Reunion, not every character is coming back. Some don't want to come back and yeah... others are dead, and there just wouldn't be enough room on the special to get every single Ranger that ever was to come back. It'll only be a select few.
PR Theater I'm guessing is just an experiment to see if oldie episodes'll be able to bring in ratings. That way they're just doing the "Best of" episodes.... not all of them. They're probably also afraid that the earlier ultra goofy campy episodes might not go over well as they used to now that PR's moved on to being more plot oriented.

I remember PR as big thing when I was young my neighbor who was 7 bought every single PR toy that was ever made- he was spoiled brat in some ways but he was always nice to me because I was older...
I did watch PR until the end of Zeo and start of Turbo came but then I had too much things to do and I never got home to watch PR. So everything got messed up for me as a continuity.
I didn't get into Turbo because the kid turning to PR didn't make sense to me at all and missed the end of Zeo...
I am trying to watch PR Wild Force but I still miss the old PR actors...
I am 16 now and I still remember the Power Rangers theme song...
Go go Power Rangers
you Mighty Morphing Power Rangers... with some music in the back ground....
then it was something like this for Zeo
Keeping up the Zords
Pooower Rangers Zeo Zeo or somthing like this
I still wonder can anyone explain what happened in the end of Zeo... and what happened to the Robot Family that kicked out Lord Z *something * and Rita out their house....
I never watched the Turbo movie but I saw the first one and must say that was really good for back then....

I don't know about you about JC, but the evil Green Ranger storyline was one of the best storyline in all the many series of power rangers. I think not showing these episodes which are the most important and best episodes makes a mockery of the title "Best of the Power Rangers." I know that Jason, Zack, and Trini left because of financial reasons. I was just being sacratic. I know that everybody who has every been a power ranger can't be feature in the reunion, but someone has to play the yellow ranger. Poor Amy Jo if Power Rangers ruin your career why were you in the power rangers turbo the movie after you had long since left your role on power rangers. As for Billy I think he made the right choice by not come back. If it wasn't for the ultra campy earlier episodes with great songs when they got into a fight you wouldn't been able to have PR:TF and WF. One final note I remember when Walter Jones (Zack) had that show on Nickeleodeon. I only got a chance to see a few episodes, but it was above average.
I liked the original. Then they started the new series with the different costumes (I forget what they called it) then I started to loose interest. Now all I see Power Rangers as is an excuse to sell cheaply made toys. Actually, I thought Power Rangers was cancelled until I found this thread:rolleyes:.

i can only talk for myself but when the whole Power Rangers thing kicked in i was 22, i only liked them for the fact that they showed the original fight scenes in most of the episodes (that made me go to the conventions and go get the original japanese version everything elese about the early show i could care less about. the characters were too goody-goody the plots were crappy and BULK&SKULL i just wanted to KILL them they were the stupidest excuse for comedy relief that ever existed. everything elese i hated about the show.(execpt aieshia the 2nd yellow ranger from the 1st PR series, she was fine now with the last 3 incarnations i've noticed that the shows had gotten better, story wise production wise, and the characters were a little more 2 dementional, and if you've noticed they started using more of their own fight scenes in stead of the stock footage from the original shows, and i actually enjoyed watching them. now i'm 32 and i admit that i loved PR: Light Speed Rescue and PR: TimeForce hey the stories were good and the Scientist from Light Speed Rescue was hot and she had the nicest eyes, and the plnk and yellow rangers from TimeForce hey they are fine too.(damn it's been 10 years already) and i think that the producers are at least trying to appeal to an older audience since the 1st generation of PR fans are now teens and they have to know that the lame stories they did 10 yrs ago wont work on todays sofisticated teens. so i gotta admit besides the stories getting better i have to admitt it's also part hormonal as to why i like the Power Rangers

Zap, try check out Time Force. Still comes on weekdays on ABC Family in the morning.
That was an awesome series run.
Wild Force....eeehhh.... I'm a PR fan, but I'm having trouble swallowing Wild Force. It's only started getting good the last few episodes.
And you can thank the fact that they've called in Japanese directors and just recently a veteran Japanese Sentai director!
Concerning the Green Ranger Saga.... it was pretty good, but I wouldn't say it was the best. More than likely the best nostalgia-wise since it was the first Sixth Ranger Saga. And by chance I've actually seen the real Green Ranger/Dragon Ranger Saga, featured in Japan as Zyuranger with the tragic hero known as Burai. His problem wasn't that he was simply losing his powers... he was dying. And he wasn't simply under a spell making him evil, he was driven mad by jealousy for his brother the Red Ranger and was trying to kill him!
After seeing an epic battle like that, which ended with Burai dying(no returning for him as the White Ranger!), seeing the American Green Ranger Saga feels severely lackluster now.
Story-wise, the best goes to the Magna Defender who was a re-awakened alien dark knight who was out to avenge the death of his son. Driven by revenge he was boarder line evil, until he instead sacrified himself and gave his powers over to the once thought dead, Red Ranger's brother.
That was a good story.
Return of Jason as the Gold Ranger was the best for me for nostalgia.

Not totally Aisha's fault tho, I think Tasha had help from the Japanese directors they called in for Turbo.
As for the TF Rangers.... Jen(hottest Ranger chick ever! I would marry this woman!)was pink and Katie(absolutely "steal your heart" eyes...) was the yellow.

Tommy came back because he was popular. If you are popular on show in America and you die. The people behind that show find a way to bring you back. Unlike in other countries where people aren't afraid to take a chances and have guts. As for the Green Ranger, I still think it the best. Maybe I just like campy, low budget entertainment like the earlier seasons of power rangers. I was wondering for any of you power rangers' fans who do you think has had the most successful acting career after power rangers?

I'd have to say Amy Jo Johnson. She's done movies and has been in a sucessful TV show.
My favorite would be Adam who's just come out with his straight to video release super-action flick, Extreme Heist. Co-starring Skull!
But at first the movie was called, Wicked Game (http://www.dragonsdenuk.com/reviews/wicked_game_jp.htm).

As for Michael Jackson, well.... his last album may have failed and his face might be getting worse, but PR's last outing was a critical and financial success!
Who said it failed? Don't compare a legend who influenced other acts for over twenty years to a show that had it's peak in popularity when Tommy became the white ranger.
How is it Michael Jackson can still be herald as the King of Pop when his last album failed miserably and an Icon when his numerous surgeries have changed the look of his face forever to say nothing about the allegations of pedophilia? The industry is such a contradiction sometimes.
Allegations of pedophilia. He spoke on that, but I guess you just forgot about the highly rated episode of Oprah that featured him in 93 saying he did NOT molest anyone! Maybe you missed when he appeared on MTV telling the world that he didn't do it. Also, let's bring up the fact that the police found no evidence of child molestation in his home! Again, you say it failed miserably. Funny how his song Butterflies shot to number one on the R&B charts with out a commercial single or video. That album did not fail considering how it was promoted(it wasn't promoted at all). Sorry for going off topic, but I dislike when people bring up Michael Jackson's past and have no idea what they are talking about.

But at first the movie was called, Wicked Game (http://www.dragonsdenuk.com/reviews/wicked_game_jp.htm).
I would say Sarah Brown but she wasn't technically a power ranger. She was the female vr troopers on VR Troopers and then came to pr after vr troopers got cancelled. When she first came I thought Sarah was going to be Kat replacement because she became very close to tommy on show and she always wore pink. Sarah won a Daytime Emmy for role Carly Benson-Quartermaine on "General Hospital (GH)." She also been in movies and other tv series. Who knows what would have happen if Sarah didn't get part on GH.

You know what's the one thing I hate about the old PR? The fact that the Ranger's wore normal clothes that were the same color as their uniform. THAT WAS SO CHEESY! Jason always wore red, Kimberly wore pink, Billy wore blue...etc. I always hated that. And then when Tommy came in, he wore green always. I don't watch PR anymore, but could you please tell me if that stupid color code thing stopped yet?
As for the hottest PR chicks that I've seen:
Kimberly
Trini
and ESPECIALLY Aisha. She was so cute!!!
Sad Thing:
And I forgot that Trini died. I'm sitting here thinking that she has had a fulfilling career and is the most happiest person alive, and then I read that she's dead. Words cannot describe how sad I am now, and this isn't even a joke either.

As for the TF Rangers.... Jen(hottest Ranger chick ever! I would marry this woman!)was pink and Katie(absolutely "steal your heart" eyes...) was the yellow.
Aiesha wa sthe absolute hottest female ranger ever. Period. I'll admit Jen was cute but Aiesha had looks, personality and a killer body. There's no way you can seriously compare to Jen.. and only Kimberly comes in a close second.
I don't watch PR anymore, but could you please tell me if that stupid color code thing stopped yet?
Nope.. but now The Rangers wear vests and uniforms that have matched the colors of their ranger transformation anyway..

Aiesha.... yeeaaah, she was hot. But a large factor of turning me on when watching Power Rangers is how the girl handles herself in a fight.
Now in any other circumstances, hells yes I'd grab me some Aiesha action. But seeing her try to fight pissed me off. Especially for a character who's suppose to be on her high school ninja team.
Tasha was a better Yellow Ranger in my eyes. In fact, for a Yellow Ranger, forgive me but.... Aiesha comes in last.

but John, speaking of handling herself in a fight now if memory serves me correct wasn't Kit for a time when she took over as the Pink Ranger always getting overwhelmed and Tommy was always coming to her aid? wasn't it something to do with her powers? i think this was around the time that they had those stupid ***** shark cycles but i digress, howcan you complain about Aiesha's fighting ability or lack of when Kat was shuch a liability at first.

God, remembering it is like a throbbing cancer in my brain. BeetleBorgs is the only US version sentai show I hate more than Maked Rider...

If you liked that, it's worth going to Japan Hero (http://www.classichero.com) and getting the original Green/Dragon Ranger Saga.
Seeing Burai fight for his life instead of Tommy for his Powers was infinatly cooler.
As for Aiesha/Kat.... hey, if Aiesha had stayed around I wouldn't be talking about her like that. I would've said the same about Kat and Tasha, but come Turbo and the return of the unmorphed fighting sequence, Kat and Tasha made a comeback in my eyes.
There was this fight they had with Evil Rangers that they did unmorphed. They got their butts handed to them, but they carried it off very well. Credit goes more toward the new directors, but yeah... if Aiesha had still been on the show, she would've prolly looked cool too.
I'm different, I know. I think I'm the only Ranger Fan on Earth who doesn't like Tommy.

Don't feel bad John, Tommy's bad acting was tolerable (i think about a year or two ago i saw him on MTV's "undressed" it's gotten a little better) i dispized Zack with his "hip-hop-'kido, and Billy should have studied Jackie Chan's drunken master movie to make his clumsiness look realistic. and as for Bulk & Skull  don't get me started!!! as comic relief they were not funny! they were a waste of air time and i almost had a coronary when i found out that they had returned in "Lost Galaxy",WHAT WERE THE PRODUCERS THINKING ??  AIIEEEYYAAA !!!!

I like the power rangers - provided I'm in the right kind of mood! I have fond memories of watching the show early morning, blitzed from the night before around a mates house. Someone is frying food, someone is being ill in the toilets and the rest huddled in corners of the living room watching the show from their sleeping bags and blankets trying to work out what is going on.
Then cries of amusment as the latest rubber guy jumps around in fustration while the PRs dance around it and then cries of laughter as the stomp around a minature city Godzilla style rounds of the show.
So it ain;t art, but it is fun and I have some nostalgic memories of the show and it's partner, the heavy hangover....

Undressed was pure unadultered crap, but what can you expect from a MTV show. Zack was just being the token black guy. Zack's job was to dance and drop catch phrases. I remember that Billy was clumsy in first season but after that he lost his glass and got tough. Billy went from being a total nerd to just being the smartest power ranger.

MMPR through Space hold some great nostalgia for me(I still remember a LOT about them-though I didn't buy a huge amount of PR merchandise, I saw almost every episode.), but looking back, I'd only want to watch Countdown to Destruction, Hog Day Afternoon Pt. 2, and A Zeo Beginning. Those are the only ones that are slightly above steaming cow crap.
I don't care about anything post-Space. I found CTD to be a fantastic conclusion to the old PR(To this day, I still can't believe that they had the guts to kill Zordon.), and when Lost Galaxy started, I didn't bother. The show had ended for me-and besides, there was this interesting thing called Pokémon I was looking forward to...:D

Power Ranger Central (http://www.rangercentral.com)
Japan Hero (http://www.classichero.com)
El Funaroverse (http://www.planetnaboo.org/~funaroverse/funaroverse/index.html)
Those are the three I set my watch to.
Power Rangers Lost Galaxy was my favorite season. Most ambitious season of all time for Power Rangers and a huge surprise seeing as I thought the series was going to end with Count Down to Desctruction. Not only did they take PR out of Angel Grove.... they took it off the face of the planet into the space station Terra Venture!!!!
I hated Bulk & Skull too. They were NOT funny, and I just wanted to drive a rusty spike through the gaht damned skulls. Tommy I've hated ever since he took Jason's place as leader, but it's cool that he's coming back for the PR Reunion this season on Wild Force.
The Best of Power Rangers is showing oldie episodes if you guys are interested. Right now it's at a point in PR when I really wasn't enjoying it. Lack of Japanese directors, and no Sentai footage being used. Ugh.... I'm looking forward to when they start doing the Turbo and beyond episodes. I gotta get those on tape.
SJJ, those sound like great memories! :D

Don't worry, JC, I hated Tommy too. (OK, I liked him as the Green Ranger, but after "White Light" and Jason's departure made Tommy the leader, I grew to hate him) But on the converse, I loved Bulk and Skull! But thinking about it, I only liked them in the very first season, when they were a couple of idiot pretenders who would never be anywhere as cool as the Ranger kids. They were the clowny idiots, that was all. Sure they were OK as well in the later stuff, but I do understand how you would end up hating them. (that, and I like them because usually them being the fools was a lot better than watching the other Rangers act as fools when they are trying to play serious)

To be honest, the only episodes I could stand were the ones from Thunder to just before Turbo.
Otherwise Power rangers sucks as a really bad rip off of voltron.
I mean come on! the dialog is just Sooooooo bad. and the only time that the props looked decent were a few eps of Lost galaxy i caught where they had guys outfitted like those from starship troopers.
But even then, the plot was so bizarre, I could barely stand to watch it.
(yes, the movie was kind of cool, and if they had the Armor they had in the movie, maybe the show would have been less absurd...
Yes, my pink skin tight yet un appealing spandex will protect me from your swords and lasers....
I mean come on. the plot sucked, and more importantly, it didn't look cool!!!!
(You see, this is where some shows with lousy plots redeam themselves. but NOT THIS ONE!!!)

You liked Thunder to Turbo? Ugh.... for me, those were the worst seasons.
Plots were bad, fight sequences sub-par due to soccer mom meddling and complaining the show was too viloent.... they stopped using Japanese stock footage.... and so forth.
And point of PR is not realism. You're suppose to suspend disbelief, use your imagination and have fun.
It's not a Voltron knock off. PR comes from a line of Japanese tv shows called sentai(Japan Hero (http://www.classichero.com)) which started in the late 60's early 70's as a show called, Goranger. Which came out before Voltron aka GoLion. One might argue Voltron being a Power Ranger knock-off then. But since I like and grew up on both shows, I won't.

ALL the power ranger plots were bad!!!!!!
But those seasons at least had some cool battles
The white tiger mega zord's special attack was just so cool with that wire frame targeting system, and the zoids... I'm sorry, zords (for a short time) looked more realistic. Also, the origional cast had started to act more effectively. So that is why I hold the opinion I do.
I guess I'm just weird (boogidie, boogidie)
But those were the only ones that my personal, subjective sense of taste auctually didn't mind sitting through.
:D  :D  :D
NOTE* "to turbo" does not include turbo as an enjoyed series. Enjoyment ended with the begining of turbo.
Ok, so power rangers ripped off Voltron AND sentai (poke poke poke) (see toonami A to Z thread to understand this refrence) :D

PR "Americanized" it... not ripped it off.
That's be like saying Robotech was a Macross rip-off. But if you are saying that then.... yeah. :)
I hated the White Tiger Zord fight sequences. That's were the problems began.
Original PR used Zyuranger costumes, badguys, and footage. But over in Japan, like they do with their anime series, Zyuranger had a beginning and an end to it. PR along with most American productions of the day had no real ending, so they had to drag it on and use the next Sentai Series for the White Tiger Zord. A show called Dairanger.
Bad part here was alot of editting went on and jacked up the Zord Battles supremely, cuz to keep "continuity" they couldn't have Zords or monsters on the same screen at the same time! Thus, no real contact.
Pretty bad stuff.....
Wasn't until the end of Space which was one of the greatest series finales of anything that America got into the groove of doing stories with actual beginnings and endings.
Power Rangers Time Force has had the best cast to date, since basically all of them could actually act and had good chemistry.
As oppose to the bad acting, but trying really hard, that us die-hard fans have grown to love/hate.
^_^
All the Ranger plots were not bad. Especially post Turbo.
Space - Rangers blaze across space trying to find Zordon.
Galaxy - Traveling to the "new world" on a space station, the Rangers find magic swords in a stone and protect the space station through space.
Lightspeed - Rangers doubling as firemen.... fighting demons from hell. Eh.... this one was kinda stupid.
Time Force - Young monster fighters from the future travel back in time to chase down rogue mutants. They steal morphers to become Time Force Rangers. Jen, the leader and Pink, is on a personal mission to exact revenge for her once thought dead former fiance.
Those were some pretty good storylines.

i got to give the last 3 pr series props form distanceing themselves from their predicessiors by bringing in a familiar theme, family. (with out sounding all sappy and whimpy) the lost and and finding of family;
in lost Galaxy the Red Ranger having lost his brother seemingly forever, then having him unite with the Magna-Defender , fighting his brother and the other Rangers and later reconcilliating what ever differences they had to defeat the bad guys.
and also the 2nd Pink Rangers quest to save her family and village from plight that had befallen them.
in Light Speed Rescue, having found out that the Titianium ranger was the long lost son of the LSR-comander and brother of the Pink Ranger and after the bad guys had temperarlly brainwashed the Titianium Ranger against the Rangers, but eventually he came to his senses reconsilled what ever bad feelings he had against his father and joined with the Rangers.
and in Time Force, ther were multiple themes: the Red Ranger tryng to come from under his fathers shadow to be his own man and not the spoiled rich boy, while his father tried to bring his son into his world. the Pink Ranger wanting revenge against her lover/fiancee's supposed death, and her having to deal with taking over the mantle of leadership (which she might not have been ready for)and having to keep her time lost-homesick teams moral up while they hunted down Ransik and tried to return him to justice. and don't forget the Quantium Rangers need for a father figuer and him trying to imprint himself on the Red Rangers father by leading the Guardians and trying to be the "perfect son." but the "thing" that "did it for me." with TimeForce was the ending when Ransik renounced his hatred for humanity when he noticed his daughter saving a human baby. is that ironic or what?
so i'm sorry for this coming off like a thesis paper but beside the good looking females it was these reacuring themes that got me back into PR.
but right now though i've only seen a few episodes i'm not feeling Wild Force right now. anybody feel the same way about it as i do?

First a firm amen to Cloudkicker.
Second well..... if you sit down and try and pay attention to what the given PR season story is trying to tell you they are different.
Time-travel, space travel, animal spirts..... I mean, there's the same underlying theme of a teenaged team of fighter who can transformer and kick ass with giant robots, but that's what us fans come for.
I mean, I don't need deep philosphy here. I need straight fun and action and that's what PR is. Requiring that suspension of disbelief that we used to have at the drop of a hate when we were younger. And that's another draw to liking PR(which is ALOT easier to do now....), it makes you feel like a kid again.
Fight scenes being cheesy.... uhhh, I might have agreed with you once, but in this latest season of Wild Force, and Time Force there have been some seriously impressive moves being pulled off. I wouldn't call 'em cheesy really anymore.
I know, I took martial arts and have an eye for this kinda thing being a HK Flick fan and American Kick Flick fan.
The fights used to be pretty cheesy, but they deserve some seriously mad credit now. Some of the stuff they pull of takes talent and precison.

It was the cheesy aspect to the show that turned me off originally. I watched Power Rangers in the very beginning when it was first on, because it seemed a lot like Voltron, a show I loved. But I didn't care for the stories and thought the production values weren't very good. I haven't watched since the, so I can't really comment on the show now. If it's improved, that's great. I've just felt like it was a lame rip-off of Voltron.

A lot of people seem to hate Zeo, and I don't know why? That was where the show started to get back on track: using all the Ohranger costumes and monsters instead of the haphazard 2nd and 3rd seasons of MMPR. They even used the team up movie with Kakuranger, which is a huge plus. I guess it's because I like seeing the Ohranger footage (I really could care less about the rangers themselves aside from when they brought Jason back). David Yost and Jason David Frank were always bad actors to me. Their lines felt very forced all the time. Seeing Adam and Tanya was the highlight of the actors for me.

Zeo... well, for me that series completely and utterly ended unmorphed fighting sequences and that's one of my favorite parts.
I hated the costume design and weapon design. It was too slinder and unremarkable. Then the Zords.. I liked the red puncher 'bot with the gatling guns on his wrists, but that was about it.
Only good part was the return of Jason, and then he had to go. :p
I did like the Tanya/Adam "romance". Adam was just simply great....
Machine Empire got a severe thumbs down from me too. They didn't even have a Scorpina badgirl for me to oggle at!
And why are afro's cool now but when I had one as a kid I got laughed at?

Wonder how this guy's going to turn good? Reminds me more of the Magna Defender Saga in his grim serious tone an thirst for revenge.
Green Ranger did it cuz, well.... Rita was simply evil and he was under his spell.

I think you may have something.
Left out of that line of evil sixth rangers, was the American made Titanium Ranger.
I like the theme of the evil, or independant ranger tho. Eric from Time Force was one of the best and happened to be a good actor too!
Something happened with production tho, and they had to cut down the number of episodes in the series. As a result a potentially cool character didn't get the development he deserved. :(

Hey John, i wonder if you've ever seen the senti Jetman series. at the con that i picked it up from the guy selling it said it was like a live action gatchaman and when i saw it i was blown away. now the question i propose to you is if Saban had turned it into a PR series what would you call it?
now my i'd try:
Power Rangers: Sky Force
Power Rangers: Sky Striker
Power Rangers: Wing Patrol
Power Rangers: Strike Wing
thats all i can think of for know, any takers with a cool or at least decient name, give it a try. :wakko:  :p

Jetman, yeah... I read about it at Sentai Spoilers.
Check out Japan Hero (http://www.classichero.com) for a link to it for some good info.
I've never actually seen an episode, but I saw Red Falcon appear again in Gaoranger vs Super Sentai the Movie.
That guy rocks!
Pretty soon Japan Hero's going to put it up for sale and VHS and VCD. Should be pretty good. ^_^
What would I call it?
Power Rangers: Falcon Quest
Power Rangers: Sky Strikers
Power Rangers: Sky Fire
Power Rangers: Jet Storm
If Saban were to do it in the early days tho, he'd prolly name it something stupid like:
The Radical Changin' Power Rangers.

They would probably call it "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers", primarily because that was the season before the one the American Sentai series started. (with Zyu Rangers)
Someday I may want to see original Sentai. But I guess now is just not the time. But I will...(most likely when I find a constant way to get income)

Hey Ataru the next time a major comic book convention comes to an area near you check the bootleg video dealers table some of them will probably have the Senti videos and in good condition and priced reasonablly. give it a shot.

Or just go to the vendor called Fansubs2000 at Japan Hero. Sentai tape's like 8 bucks each!
I recommend "GoGo V: Sudden Shock!" and "Kakuranger Episodes 42-46" as a good place to start. I can't remember which tape of Zyuranger is worth it to get, but it's the one with the beginning of the Green Ranger/Dragon Ranger Saga that's much better than the MMPR one.

I'm guessing neither.
Most I heard is only Tommy's coming back, and I think it's just going to be a guest starring role.
