View Full Version : Profanity

So, I assume everyone here knows that these are all-ages boards.

One thing that means is that we don't allow profanity.

As I say, everyone knows this, which is one reason we occasionally get a small tide of "comics page" expletives: Things like "s#@%" and "f$@k." Sometimes it's more blatant, like "*****" or "sh*t." And some people figure the censor software will catch it, and so just go hell for leather: "Holy ****! That was ****ing incredible!"

Well, that doesn't work either, folks. Old timers will recognize that this is one of our periodic reminders. No offense guys, but it's time to say it again because we've been getting another one of those riptides.

The above formulations are not acceptable. We don't like language, even when it has that kind of "fuzz" stuck in it. It's not the worst offense in the world -- it's not as bad as actually putting the words in, you know -- but it will get you a warning.

The rule is very simple, actually: If you're not allowed to spell it out on the board, then you're not allowed to spell it out with "fuzz." :)

Thanks.

What about complete gibberish to display displeasure?

I.E. "Bah Weep Grahana, Wheep Ninny Bah"

OR

"Those *(&%@#(^)*&@^#^$@ (random symbols) Pod people are out to get me!"

:o

Or words like "Darn, Dang, lousy, fatuus (latin), poo-doo heads, etc?"

Sometimes I would like to display my emotive disassotiation with my fellow board posters.

(but most of the time, I'm all smiles :D :D :D :D :D )

Just tryin to feel out that grey area,

-El Z.

I think an emoticon with one raised eyebrow would take care of all my swearing needs. Of course it would have to be able to suck its cheeks in, pout, and click it's tongue...maybe I'd better just stick to not posting when I'm mad.

This one- http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/frown9.gif is kinda like you described, only no toungue.

[shamless plug to some-one elses website] I got it from the one, the only, The Ultimately Pointless Website (http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/)! [/shamless plug to some-one elses website]

They have others there you may find appropriate for your swear-replacing needs. http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/thumbs.gif

I don't beleive I'm one of the people that uses unacceptable language, but I have a question or two. Are the language rules any less-enforced in the Adult Swim forum? After all, on some AS shows they use worse language than is appreciated on the boards. And I'm still rather confused about what's allowed as far as language, anyway. As long as it's not censored, we're free to use it?

Different boards have different standards, which are basically set and enforced by the person who runs the associated "Hosted Site." Because Adult Swim targets a more mature audience, they do allow more mature kinds of expression. But the WF boards also attract a lot of minors, and for that reason we are a bit stricter.

Cartoon cussin? I really don't want to get into hair-splitting, but I don't see much wrong with a Yosemite Sam-style "Rackinfrackin sassafrassin fratenizin" type of thing. The comic strip "@#%!*" is bit harder to justify, because it is "fuzz"-y.

There are probably a lot of people under 18 who like adult swim and visit its board. The so-called Fred Flintstone fuzz is very hard to read.

Some words, such as the nasty a-word, need to stay no matter what. Do we want things to look like this?
I ***ume...
Word ***ociation

I just found a smilie for anyone who feels the need to curse:

http://www.duhspot.com/users/smiley/s/contrib/edoom/cussing.gif
I suggest you save it somewhere secure before it gets yanked for bandwidth problems.
Have a nice http://www.duhspot.com/users/smiley/s/contrib/edoom/cussing.gif day! :D
