View Full Version : Profanity

So, I assume everyone here knows that these are all-ages boards.
One thing that means is that we don't allow profanity.
As I say, everyone knows this, which is one reason we occasionally get a small tide of "comics page" expletives: Things like "s#@%" and "f$@k." Sometimes it's more blatant, like "*****" or "sh*t." And some people figure the censor software will catch it, and so just go hell for leather: "Holy ****! That was ****ing incredible!"
Well, that doesn't work either, folks. Old timers will recognize that this is one of our periodic reminders. No offense guys, but it's time to say it again because we've been getting another one of those riptides.
The above formulations are not acceptable. We don't like language, even when it has that kind of "fuzz" stuck in it. It's not the worst offense in the world -- it's not as bad as actually putting the words in, you know -- but it will get you a warning.
The rule is very simple, actually: If you're not allowed to spell it out on the board, then you're not allowed to spell it out with "fuzz." :)
Thanks.

The fuzz?
Hee Hee Hee.
Well, as much as I don't ******* agree with the swearing rules, I will follow them to the ******* letter. ****.
(By the way, there were no actual swear words in this post. Just asteriks, or "the fuzz".) :p

Not trying to be funny but is "Hell" included? I talk about Hellraiser a lot. Or is this just a matter of context?

Referring to the place hell and saying "ah hell" is different. If you read the rules, PG-language is allowed. You will see "hell" and "damn" in a PG movie. (Note certain movies that may be PG contain language suitable for a PG-13 even R movie [IE: Spaceballs]). If you don't over use "hell" and "damn", then it should be ok. A sentence with three "Damns" would be edited down to one. Same goes for "hell".
Boy, if that wasn't an example, this would've been edited.. ;)

Marge: What did you learn about in Sunday school today?
Bart: Hell.
Marge: Bart! I've told you about using language like that!
Bart: But that's what we talked about! I sure as hell can't say we learned about hell unless I say "hell"!
Homer: He's got us there.
Bart: Hell, yes.
Marge: Bart! Stop cursing! You're not in church anymore!
There is no reason to use profanity here. I t just isn't necessary ,since these boards are viewed by so many, and some young. Can't we just say we are very mad with so and so for doing this stupid thing? Very mad conveys the point clearly. Sure, swearing among a certain group of friends may be right, but it isn't when everyone is around. Especially here....And yes I do swear, I am not perfect, but on this one, the moderaters are right. thans. Stuart

I didn't know we could use damn. That's why I never mentioned "Queen of the Damned"

I agree, there is a time and place for everything, and this is not the place for profanity. Now only if the "new" marvel would realize that the profanity they've been alowing in their PG rated books is both wrong and unnecesary,as wll as inmature, I will be a happier man.

I have no problem with profanity it the right places. I swear a lot - not because I'm thick or inarticulate, simply because it can be effective in stressing a point. In this respect, if don't appropriately in a comic book that's fine - however it is way too easy for it to be used - as you said - in gratutity.
When it comes to boards however, it's vital in my eyes for two reasons that there is no swearing.
Firstly, swearing in posts can be taken the wrong way. In a community, a mistaken emphasis can create bad vibes, offensive and ultimately retaliation. As I imagine most of us swear in a our everyday conversations, we don't mean to offend by it - but it's not as easy to communicate your intentions in writing. Swearing can be mistook even if it's just meant for harmless emphasis - so it's best to swear at all. A healthy rule for a healthy board.
Secondly, as Maxie says, it's an all ages board, and while the younger members are sure to know all the words and more, it's simply not necessary to give a bad example.
In the end it's easy to use profanity - it's harder to articulate a point. To making interesting to read. That is what we must all aspire to when we post. To interest people. To entertain.
And afterall, that's what should make a board so special.

...Or, as Ozzy would say: "Holy spit!"

Basically, it's "legal" to say PG language. Any forms of stronger words..well, I don't know what the deal with that is, just try to keep the language in PG range, and you guys won't have to worry about a thing. (And neither will we)

I only really use launguage that isn't "PG" when I am either 1) trying to get what I want to say out or 2) letting out some stress. Sorry If I have offended anyone.

If these boards are for all ages, I don't think any curse word should be allowed...PERIOD! To me, they're bad examples. Plus, I don't think they make a good impression on the boards.
And BTW, how is it possible for these boards to be all ages and PG rated? It should be one or the other. PG is a big difference over all ages.

"PG" is not intended literally to reflect the MPAA or TV rating. As such, there is no master list of words or topics that are ruled off-limits.
"All ages" is similarly vague and undefined. There is no agreed-upon universal standard for what words or topics that are acceptable for all ages, only a general sense that certain words and topics are definitely not suitable.
Basically, the "PG" and "all ages" designations are intended to warn people off of the obviously problematic, while also signalling that a certain amount of leeway exists.

Of course if you want to get technical, you could consider this a PG-13 board since you have to be 13 to register. ;) But basically I think all we want to do is make this place open, inviting, and friendly as possible for anyone, regardless of age.

If you want to split hairs, avatars with nudity would be ok on a PG board also since I've seen nudity in PG movies. But as Maxie pointed out, we aren't rigidly following MPAA ratings standards here, that would be a BAD thing. If you want to know what's acceptable, just click on the rules above. And, sorry, nudie avatars are off limits! :D

This should also apply to the adult swim board.
Any way, the problems usually happen when someone is angry or too excited.
