I'll assume they gave me a very high range budget like Shenmue, or MetalGearSolid2.
My game would be on the PC I'd toss in a bunch of stuff that I've always admired. It woud be about cavemen in the Ice age or futuristic space colonization.
I mean the cave men would be so much fun. It would combine elements of Real Time Strategy, a PC online adventure, the option of an engine similar to Tribes 2, and Shenmue's freeish 3rd person view as an option. I would personally emphesize polygons over textures, because I would want to have tremendous detail in the ice age enviroment.
Anyway the specifics.
You'd be able to adopt the image of a caveman (customizing him ala sims style.) And you'd get to control the tribe. You could zoom out to a 3rd person view where it's like omnicient (Warcraft, Starcraft, Age of Empires), but then you can zoom into a level where it's similar to Ryo Hazuki walking around observing all the other people's lives. You'd be able to pretty much go anywhere and do anything, but if you wander to far from the tribe you could get killed by hostile forces (IE animals, other tribes, natural stuff.)
You'd also have to manage resources as well. Your tribe will starve if you don't. You'll also have to collect wood like in AOE (Food please, Wood please ) In the warmer months you could farm, pick berries and do stuff like that. However, doing the rough winter months you have to get more gritty. If you've found a neighboring tribe you might be able to trade/ or more fun steal from them (note: but be careful they might try that on you.) However, the real cool thing would be hunting. Again I draw a parrallel to hunting elephants in the 1st AOE. However, this would be diffrent. This time it's Maammoths and you have to employ genuine strategy to kill one. You see the great beasts travel in heards so it's risky. You have to tell you're forces to position themselves at diffrent area's (not RTS style, but more like tactical.) Each event in the area would be conducted in full Kessen style FMV. (ex. when you command some of your guys to move you see a cut scene of a these cavemen silently treding to a new location, with the mammoths in the background.) However, you have to be extreamly cautious one false move could startle the creatures causing them to.
A. Run away.
or B. (And this is bad) Charge you head on.
In the later case the action get's crazy, because loss of even 1 hunter can have cataclysmic afffects on your small tribe.
Okay but if you're succesful and you do kill an animal (the young one's would be pretty easy, but the main factor there would the parent actually) you take it back to the village (but be warned there are many tribes/animals that might want to take it from you.) Anyway once you get back to your home you get experiance points.
Technology will be something that can grow. You could like advance from a thrusting to a throwing spear thus decreasing the potential danger in combat.
Warfare: Wars between tribes would be less prevelant but boy would they rock. The style would be similar to Dynasty Warriors 2 in which you hack and slash your opponents (whilst nicely rendered fog, dust, and snow fly about you.) At the risk of getting some activist groups upset you'dd be able to take women and children back to improve the population of your tribe.
Online: It would be possible to form online communites with each player having their own charecter in the tribe. However, hunting and warfare would require teamwork on a level like above even Tribes 2 or PSO.
BTW I know this would require some steep hardware specs, but it would be worth it. However, I don't think there are any computers powerful enough yet to form this dream.
So what kinda of games would you make, with your dev team.
