I don't know if anyone here reads John Kricfalusi's blogs at all, but there's a fascinating post right now on his "John's Funky HB" blog (I'm not sure, is it okay by forum rules to post a link to that here?). When John worked at Hanna Barbara, he pitched a Flintstones spin-off called Perry Gunite, using the character of the tough private detective from the episode Love Letters on the Rocks from Season 1 (the episode where Fred believes some other man is romancing Wilma, only to be shocked at the true author of the love poems--remember "Your eyes black as frying pans"?). The blog includes drawings and story outlines. Check it out.

It would have been a terrific way to revisit the Flintstones world.

John K. also worked on the 1980s Jetsons. He posts some of his pitches for this, too (not used), including a crossover with The Flintstones. John K. did do two Jetsons shorts for Adult Swim, one of which is available online.

It seems to me The Flintstones on the Rocks was directly inspired by John K.'s style, even though I don't believe he was involved.

The Flintstones had almost as many spinoffs as Scooby Doo, which surprised me. So one less spinoff series?

I remember reading that article on John's blog, I think it wouldve been good to see happen and it would've been the thing to see.

Nope, but Bill Wray was. He had previously worked on a lot of John K cartoons and it is possible he decided to use that style for the cartoon cause he also did another cartoon called King Crab which looked a lot something made by Spumco even though John K had nothing to do with it.

The special was done by Chris Savino (which claims to have worked on Spumco, while John K. claims otherwise) and Dave Smith, using designs done by Craig Kellman commissioned by Fred Seibert when he was in charge of HB for use in merchandising in 1996. John K. says that the designs are imitations of their own drawings done for a Laserdisc of the 1st season of Flintstones, and that the special itself made after he made the Yogi Bear shorts because CN decided that make fun of HB characters in house was better.
