View Full Version : Are the... ...Canadian and other new shows really helping CN?
Are all these new 'Live-Action' and 'Real' shows really helping CartoonNetwork?
Along with all these Canadian shows CN is importing.
6teen, TDI, TDA, Stoked, and a few of the 'CN Real' shows are also Canadian.
Some of them Teletoon or YTV.
I really don't think they are really helping CN go to the top, a place where it surely hasn't been for a long time.
Doesn't it waste MORE money paying Teletoon and/or YTV for their license air shows on American television, along with commercial production and such?
It also appears they're getting new shows, which look more children-aimed then anything,
"Pink Panther and Pals" as some kind of sequal/prequal to the Pink Panther shows and shorts. It looks like a Baby Loony Tunes version of Pink Panther, maybe they're trying to revive that children's/babies block? Tickle U or something?
Also another new show, "Alison & Allie", also happens to be a Canadian show, which CN is importing from Teletoon. It sounds like a kid show, just like the "The Land Before Time" TV Series. I definitely smell a new Kids block.
All CN does is make new shows, then replace them with Canadian shows. Then those shows are removed or replaced again.
Of course it appears as though CN is trying a variety of shows that would appeal to both teens, and those younger. They would have accomplished this better with keeping Miguzi and/or Toonami. These 'Canadian' shows which everyone is craving over, I don't really see what's so special.
CN must be in real budget problems to be going this low in trying to get new age groups and viewers. CN was fine years ago: Why go through a bundle of changes that make it lose older viewers who grew up watching CN?
I also understand that CN is importing shows that aired on WB networks (Johnny Test, 5Ds, Chaotic) due to the networks being related, but still where's all the Cartoon Network stuff?
IMO, we don't need new Canadian shows. We need -Cartoon Network-(and/or Warner Brother) shows.

The Canadian Hour (TDA/6teen) is actually one of CN's bigger ratings-grabbers.

I know the Canadian cartoons are getting the ratings now. I am almost positive that CN Real isn't doing much of anything.

I thought TDI & TDA were topping CN's ratings or something.
And about the 'toddler block': Marvel Super Hero Squad.
Look it up on youtube. "HERO UP!"
I showed this to my baby cousin, he wouldn't stop singing it.
I don't think he speaks for the entire toddler population though.
I personally think, they're just testing new waters,
and maybe in a few years, they'll settle where it's comfortable.
Adventure Time is a CN original, premiering this fall/winter.
And there's going to be two other CN originals and a new Ben 10 series
by next year, hopefully.

Ahem… CN Real discussions belong in the Entertainment Board (http://forums.toonzone.net/forumdisplay.php?f=81). I’ll leave this thread here on the condition that it focus on your argument against Canadian animation.
I really don't think they are really helping CN go to the top, a place where it surely hasn't been for a long time.Pardon? The “Total Drama” series is currently the #2 show on the network and has broken several records, and even “6teen” gets better ratings than “Chowder” and “The Marvelous Misadventures Of Flapjack”.
Doesn't it waste MORE money paying Teletoon and/or YTV for their license air shows on American television, along with commercial production and such? No. In fact, the opposite is true. It’s far cheaper for the network to acquire animated programs than to produce their own.

Actually, importing shows from other countries is less expensive than producing their own.
Why are some people acting like Cartoon Network just recently started importing shows from Canada? This isn't a new thing, folks. They've been doing this for years. If the issue is just that you don't like the Canadamated shows such as Johnny Test, Total Drama Island/Action or 6Teen, just dont' watch them. Canadian cartoons are at least cartoons, so they belong on CN more than CN Real. No one complained when CN was airing a huge amount of anime, yet now some fans seem bent on scapegoating Canadamation for bringing down the network. Why is it OK for CN to import cartoons from Japan but not OK for them to import shows from Canada?
Personally, I don't care what country a show comes from as long as it's good.

As far as the Canadian shows like TDI and 6teen, I think they are definately helping CN. Personally, I'll take them and hopefully Stoked over Chowder or Flapjack anyday of the week. I believe it was said that TDI was one of the highest rated shows for CN, plus as far as I know it's one of the first times we're getting a relatively quick DVD season release. I think both shows hit something with not only the teen/preteen viewers but a bit more of an adult audience as well.
As far as staying more faithful to "older CN viewers", part of the problem is just that, CN viewers get older, and most of them move on to other things. Most of the CN originals are great, but honestly they need breaks and to be rotated out too. I don't see getting existing shows that aren't airing elswhere as worse than producing your own new stuff. Toonami and Miguzi were frequently filled with non CN shows that people really enjoyed like Dragonball z, Totally Spies, Code Lyoko, Sailor Moon, Thundercats etc...

I don't know about the CNReal shows, but Total Drama Island/Action and 6Teen are among CN's top-rated shows currently, and Johnny Test, despite all of the hate it receives here, continually puts butts in seats. So the Canadamated cartoons are helping CN, although technically, CN has never been "on top" as it were; the network typically comes in 3rd behind Nick and Disney Channel.
Doesn't it waste MORE money paying Teletoon and/or YTV for their license air shows on American television, along with commercial production and such? No. As others have said, it actually costs less for a network to import an acquisition than to produce their own shows.
I definitely smell a new Kids block.Pink Panther & Pals isn't a sequel or a prequel to anything; it's just a babyfication like Muppet Babies. Like most babyfications, it likely just takes place in an alternate universe. Anyway, is it really so unusual that a network aimed at kids is picking up childrens' shows? We should just be thankful that CN is still interested in animation.
All CN does is make new shows, then replace them with Canadian shows. Then those shows are removed or replaced again.Name an example of a new show that CN replaced with a Canadian show.
Of course it appears as though CN is trying a variety of shows that would appeal to both teens, and those younger. They would have accomplished this better with keeping Miguzi and/or Toonami. These 'Canadian' shows which everyone is craving over, I don't really see what's so special.Half of the shows on Toonami and Miguzi were likewise imports or acquisitions. It sounds to me like you just have a grudge against Canadian cartoons for some reason.
CN must be in real budget problems to be going this low in trying to get new age groups and viewers. CN was fine years ago: Why go through a bundle of changes that make it lose older viewers who grew up watching CN?With all due respect, please don't start another "Cartoon Network was so much better years ago" rant. Those tirades are beyond tired. The fact is that CN doesn't care about older viewers, or anyone under age 14. They aim their programming at children, not young adults who grew up with the 90's CN.
So what would you call Marvel Super Hero Sqaud, Scooby-Doo: Mysteries, Inc., Ben 10 Evolutions, Hot Wheels, Generator Rex, Sym-Bitoic Titan and Adventure Time?

Actually, they did again. I was looking through some old threads and there is quite a bit of "this anime crap airs too much" going on there. Let's face it, there's people out there that hate Japanese animation just because it is Japanese animation, and the same apparently goes for Canadian animation.
I have nothing against Canadian animation, I like some Canadian cartoons, just like I enjoy some Japanese cartoons.
I think what annoys me more than anything else is that the Canadian cartoons being acquired by Cartoon Network all follow the same format: mildly quirky Flash cartoon starring human characters who are largely stereotypes. It gets boring after a while.

Maybe that's what the kids like, LOSE is a Canadian cartoon and it doesn't follow this formula and it hasn't been doing so well.
It does seem like some people have a double standard on what should air on cN, some have said cN should't air foreign cartoons, but make exceptions to anime, why should Japanese cartoons get perference over cartoons from any other part of the world.

i miss the cn of 2005
im fine with the Canadian and japanese shows what I hate Is that CN Is going to have another kiddy block. Does anyone remember the last time they did this Tickle U. Also I hate that they're adding hot wheels, and Garfield. I'll watch Marvel Superhero squad for some laughs and I want to see how pink panther is since I liked the original series.

It hasn't been confirmed that CN is going to make another kiddie block, and even if they are, it's not like you're being forced to watch any of it. If any show isn't to your liking, then you always have the option to simply ignore it and watch something else. Everyone is entitled to their own tastes and opinions, but I never saw the point of hating on a show or a block just because it exists.

If back then they felt CN was at its worst when they stopped airing as many classics.

I just want to say that I think a lot of us here right now have really fond memories of those Cartoon Cartoons that were being called crap in that old thread and so we disagree with those opinions but many of us (me included at some point or another) sound exactly like that, we just developed an attachment to cartoons from the 90's and not the 30's.
Back on topic Canadian cartoons are doing the opposite of ruining the network, It might be the only thing keeping them interested in cartoons right now. I have accepted that the only way I'm going to see Naruto Shippuden is online or on DVD, same for One Piece and Zach Bell and I do know that these Canadian cartoons (which I do like for the most part) are doing well right now and there success right now is determining if we ever get more Naruto's and One Piece's and Zach Bell's. I honestly think right now that as animation fans our main concern should be about American animation on CN because if anyone hasn't noticed after anime (which let's face it most of us have other methods of seeing) American animation is the thing going fastest. They do have it but how often do they show it?

O Canada originally aired on Wednesday nights on Cartoon Network, then it was moved to late Sunday nights after Space Ghost: Coast to Coast/Cartoon Planet. (This was prior to [adult swim], BTW.) But O Canada was only 30 minutes, not 60.

Here's a question, 4Kids often edited anime because they thought references to Japanese culture would confuse kids. So do references to Canada "confuse" kids in these cartoons?

Canadian culture is a lot closer to American culture than Japanese culture is, so there's not so much of a need for edits in Canadamation.

True enough, but American children would be unfamiliar with certain terms, like "Boxing day".

Well in theory there is no reason why CN can't air TDI and One Piece on the same channel, this could only effect new anime acquisitions, if for some reason Canadian cartoons are easier to buy then anime.

To clarify, "O Canada" was a half-hour block of cartoons produced through National Film Board of Canada. Stuff like "The Cat Came Back", "Bob's Birthday", and "The Big Snit" were among those aired.
One thing I remember was that the nudity in "Bob's Birthday" was covered by a maple leaf.

That could be the case. However, kids could ask their parents about it or simply look it up through a book or the Internet themselves.
