Well... so much for CN. Not like it was much worth watching anyway.

CN hasn't been very stable for the past few years anyways. None of their original shows last very long, and their "named blocks" aren't around for more than a few months at a time. There is absolutely no stability in this network anymore, and their ultimate test might come within the next few months.

Since the only source provided here is from another message board, this news is "iffy" to say the least (though at least 1 person on the Entertainment Forum has confirmed this news to be true). However, if it is true, it will indeed be the final nail on the coffin for CN, but at least afterwards, the channel will be able to air all of the crappy live action that they want to without hearing the shouts of "But it's CARTOON Network!" ringing in their ears.
Furthermore, if CN refuses to drop the live action, they may as well change the channel's name; continuing to call the channel CARTOON Network when it isn't one anymore is just plain absurd.

Until CN confirms this, its just a rumor, Let us pray that its not true.:radda:
But i would say its 50/50 right now. IF CN doesn't start showing more toons by september, then I may belive it.
I'm taking a look through the U.S. Trademarks Registry to see if this rumor has any weight to it.

If this does turn out to be true [I feel the same way soundmonkey44 does], then Cartoon Network must be really stupid.
"CN Real bombed spectacularly, particularly on Wednesdays. This is part of the reason for the name change, the hope is that without the "Cartoon Network" name kids will watch the live-action."
They'd turn out to be wrong, and CN would be remembered in the same way Fox Kids is.

True, I already rant about how i miss fox kids, I don't want to have to be doing the same for Cartoon Network Next year.:(:evil::radda:
But again Until CN. warner or Turner give us some confirmation on this Im just going to put this in the Nasty rumor pile, along with Bill gates is an alien spy and Dan cook is the antichrist. cause neither of those have been proven either! LULZ!

Changing their name would be the most monumentally stupid thing they could do. They'd be killing off a brand that took nearly twenty years to build for literally no reason at all.
That said, I won't believe this until I see some kind of official word.

That's the thing. If all of this transpires as rumored, who knows how long it will be until CN (or whatever it'll be called then) abandons its commitment to quality programming. We could be looking at an entire lineup of utterly generic, mediocre kidvid and Disney/Nick castoffs.
This better be a hoax.
Changing the name won't bring better ratings. If this is true, then I officially declare Snyder as the worst television station leader in history.
Want better ratings? Keep the name, cancel the shows that are causing your failure..
well some of this news isn't old and the name change is something i foresaw back when they started CN real

Cartoon Network should stay Cartoon Network, both in CONTENT and NAME.
If they were to remove Adult Swim I would be mad, as well.

Well, CN hasn't been all consolidate like it used to back in the 90's, so now they going to changed their name? Why on Earth they wanted to do that for, unless it would be a additional broadcasting coming this fall? Oh, please don't let that happen :( especially with Chowder and Flapjack's near cancellation, I have to admit I like Flapjack and Chowder is kinda alright only when Truffles put in charge.
So I guess that leaves CN live-action shows and Canadian animation on CN's new broadcasting. :radda:

Maybe Cartoon Network will change its name to CN or Children Network if this news is true. Though, Cartoon Network has been making questionable decisions in the past few months it would surprise me if this news was true. Sadly, this is reminding me too much of MTV. Hopefully, I'll like some of the new programming they'll air.

I agree about being skeptical until a solid source can be found.
But, honestly, I wouldn't mind the name change. As long as they have shows I want to watch,
I'll watch. If not, there are always other channels.
But does name have to do anything with the CN Real ratings?
I mean, if a kid doesn't want to watch a show, changing the network name doesn't seem like it'd change their minds into being a fan.
"As I sit here on an empty floor of an empty building looking at all the empty animation offices"
This kind of worries me though.
I got this quote from Mr. Greenblatt's blog (creator of Chowder).
Edit: I can understand the execs wanting to save CN Real,
but I'm guessing it bombed. (haven't actually seen official ratings though)
If they have to drop 4 new shows in a short period of time, it'd be pretty bad for them.
It's more of a "we'll see" thing for me though.

I was wondering when this was going to get posted here. That was me who posted that thread. Like I just posted on the ASMB, leaking that is just to cushion the blow a bit. Though CN Real's terrible ratings may have given Cartoon Network some pause, as schedule shifts have indicated. We will find out soon enough. I'm working on getting back into contact with the source. So is rust.

To be honest it's a smart move it's it's true. I mean really it should not be called cartoon network if it's not cartoons all the time, which it has not been for years now. Might as well make it offical.

For what it's worth the person also commented that "they should let the Toonami folks take care of things, but that won't happen."

Agreed.
Rumor or whatever, I honestly hope this happens. CN is so hellbent on adding live-action to the network that they might as well stop lying to their viewers. Even if that means becoming Disneylodeon.
Yeah. That's a good name. Disneylodeon.
Tries to be like both, but accomplishes neither.

07-02-2009, 07:41 PM
Well, it looks to me like this is true. We have stories from two very well respected Toon Zone members and a strange quote from Greenblatt's blog. What I make of this, is that the network is only changing it's name. It's the reason for it that makes me embarrassed to watch CN. The Live Action bombs and they think that kids would be more likely to watch it if it wasn't called Cartoon Network? If they would take the money out of their throats they might realize that the solution to that would be to give up on Live Action entirely because their fans don't like it. They are going to lose a lot more viewers than they will gain because of this. If they don't change this decision soon, CN is dead. And not just the name.

My guess is that it changes to "*insert new channel name* Cartoon Forum." Seeing has how aside from a name change and skewing older, it'll still be more or less the same as it is now.
Though if the channel changes its name, I predict that Boomerang will turn into a Nicktoons Network-type channel. Basically, airing older/cancelled shows and premiering shows that wouldn't fit on the main channel. Plus, it'll be ad-supported.

That'd be terrible. Boomerang already is adding too many cartoon cartoons. Turning the whole network into that would ruin what's left of Boomerang. And right after one the best schedule changes in a long time.

I very much doubt that is what this means.
They probably mean instead of focusing on younger kids, they're going to focus more on the pre-teens with their live action shows. -_-
"Kids aren't watching our live action crap because we're not living up to our channel's name. So instead of doing so, we're just going to change the name of the network! It makes perfect sense!"
I totally called it. I'll bet almost anything they change the network name to "The CN." Just you wait.

Well, technically, Nicktoons Network did air a live-action show. A puppet show about two guys working at a fast food restaurant.

Cartoon Network will likely change its name to a general title to accomodate live-action and cartoons. Cartoon Network's current shows might be staying where they, take a few of course, and some of their cartoons in development might stop production I suppose.

I interpret that to mean 'the ratings weren't just low, they were subterranean'.
I was just considering the possibility of CN rebranding itself earlier today while watching a commercial for Slamball during DBD (which I kind of like, really). I'm pretty ambivalent ... there are only two animated shows on CN I like right now (Secret Saturdays and Batman: Brave and the Bold), so I wouldn't really be losing much. But I REALLY like Secret Saturdays. Losing Adult Swim wouldn't affect me in the slightest, though.

I tell you this, if Cartoon Network is changing its name, it won't happen this fall. No offical announcement yet and it is July. They announce changes like this in advance.

Unless Cartoon Network does get a new, more appropriate name, it won't make sense for it to continue bringing even more live-action programs if they have a potential of gathering dismal ratings. Otherwise, I'm just looking at this whole thing having rumors without confirmation. (I think the word "rumor" is a disgusting word.)

Until a reliable source confirms this, it's just a rumor or someone trying to spread an internet rumor.
(I think the word "rumor" is a disgusting word.)
Dare I ask why?
This rumer (and that is all that it is) holds no truth to it until the network itself begins airing promo's or some kind of advertisment to let people know about the switch. As it stands right now, this rumer has no hair on it's chest and even though a lot of people predicted something like this would happen in the predictions and hopes thread I just cant see this going down.

In a way, I wouldn't be too surprised if this turned out to be true. At the same time though, as long as Cartoon Network, or whatever it wants to call itself, airs the shows that I like, the name change wouldn't bother me.
Even though some forum members have said that this is true, I'm going to go ahead and close this thread. All we have so far are posts on message boards claiming that they heard it from a reliable source. While I don't think anyone is lying, or would want to lie in this situation, I think that it would be more helpful for the discussion if we had something official from Cartoon Network to go along with this. They are trying to promote how they air both cartoons and live-action now, but they never mentioned changing their name.
If or when Cartoon Network brings an official statement on this matter, then it will be more useful/helpful for people wanting the total truth and to help with the discussion. Thank you.
