*breaks character for an important message*

The April Fools' topics will be preserved in some form, but not the perfectly-preserved museum form. Changed mod names and graphics will revert to normal. I need help because I don't know what you would like added to this:

http://www.platypuscomix.net/tz

Honestly, this year's turned out duller than others due to lack of united audience participation. I haven't seen anything like the 24 stunt from two years ago or the thing with Samantha last year. Maybe "Biggest Frickin' Thread" would have been a contender if more people had tried to contribute. What would you like to be saved, if anything?

UPDATE: Requests closed; topics archived.

Honestly, there really wasn't anything memorable this year. Everything was basically just a bunch of repeated memes, and there was nothing epic, so I agree that this year was particularly pretty dull.

I second this notion, AFD felt kind of tame compared to last year.

Also seconding saving the Anti-Orihime threads so they can be used in a documentary of how fanboys react when danger approaches their idols.

Keep the Orihime threads and the God thread. I liked choosing a new deity for TZ.

Yeah, sorry about that. ^_^;; I had a big thing planned, but after a while the thread was buried by other topics, so I just kind of let it die.

I was planning on absorbing everyone's powers and becoming an unstoppable monster that vaguely resembled Al Khan, sort of like Temple Fugate's epic Michellin Man transformation and subsequent battle from last year's epic April Fool's Day.

The prize was being the first to die at my feet.

It being Wednesday and all, I didn't expect much to happen. I certainly didn't have the capacity for a full-scale role play like what happened in the last two years. I just went around and posted a bit as the conceited horror writer Garth Marenghi from the cult hit Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. (If you've never heard of it, look it up. Fantastic series. Utterly hilarious.)

I think my favorite part of TZ was the Comic Book Forum turning into the 300 Board. The thread titles made me chuckle. "(Poll) The Shade: Will We Fight In It? (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=227347)"

With the next AFD falling on another work day, I doubt things will be more hectic than this one.

Since I know some people here don't appreciate the zaniness, I'm okay with things being more tame than previously. Personally I enjoyed how the 1999 theme played out on the Video Games forum, which is probably because there's so much "1999, get it?" material to work with.

Overall, it was entertaining for a while, but things definitely got a little boring faster than the past April Fools Days. It being the middle of the week, I think that limited how much some people could post during the day. I actually have a paper that is due in the morning, but knowing I'd never get it done being distracted by all the April Fools shenanigans, I was wise enough to get it done the day before. I think I enjoyed what went on in the Anime forum and Cafe the most. I missed the Club TZ layout, though :(. Making the whole forum taking place 10 years earlier, 1999, definitely added a twist, and it was somewhat amusing. I wonder where that idea came from to do that this year?

The 1999 stuff was cool to watch. Logging on during the day and just browsing the 1999 threads across the forums was nice. Kicking back and watching the fun is much more relaxing than being in the thick of things.

Bill Clinton was a nice addition to the rotating cartoon images. He's quite the character. Just before the change-back, I noticed the TZ mascot kicking Jar-Jar. Is that going to stay in the rotation? :-)

EDIT: Bravo, Temple, bravo.:: bows ::

Now excuse me while I get a pin and puncture my artificially swelled ego. Acting like Garth Marenghi is a lot harder than it looks.

It was so awesome to have that Ayn Rand thread. That worked out well for a little while there.

I was planning on absorbing everyone's powers and becoming an unstoppable monster that vaguely resembled Al Khan, sort of like Temple Fugate's epic Michellin Man transformation and subsequent battle from last year's epic April Fool's Day.It was the Stay Puft Marshmallow man, and don't you forget it! :p

Yeah, it'll take a LOT to top last year's. One of the many reasons I didn't go for anything of that scale this time.

Thanks to you I'm actually watching this. DAMN YOU FUGATE!!! DAMN YUUUUU!!!

The credit goes to CookieS for the idea. As well as to me, because I pulled over half of this together -- I wrote all the new forum descriptions, created all the left corner graphics and whipped up most of the new logos except for the CN board.

You might think we discuss excitedly in committee for months, but the truth is, one person throws out an idea, several months pass, then everybody says "sure, do that." In fact, one guy suggested Toon Zone do absolutely NOTHING and make THAT the April Fools' prank, and I absolutely wouldn't let that happen. As dull as this year was, it would have been even duller.

Demonic Raven
04-02-2009, 12:42 AM
Well, I personally had fun. I didn't get to do anything last year (I apparently missed a whole lot of epic, from what I'm hearing), so at least getting to do stuff this time was a step up for me.

Acting as Zetsubou-sensei, and plenty of image spamming and other assorted things like trolling Ribbons (Hellcat), mostly in the Anime Forum. The Anime Forum was definitely the overall winner this year, in my book.

That kinda sucks. The whole grand prize. Glad I didn't break out Engine-O G12.

Like I said in one of the final threads, I wish I could have helped out Don near the end of the Orihime threads, but Anime Club ended and had to take someone (along with myself) home. Plus, to re-iterate, the forum was moving epically slow during the day. I thought it was Conflicker, until I could access other sites quickly and easily.

I wanted to start an epic thread where I had sex with all the Claymores, but was quickly shot down by Karl's mood swings (glad he got pregnant, and that there were no "Karl Pregnant" images posted. I saw AMV Hell /0 a few days ago, and did not want to stab my eyeballs again). Plus, inspired by the epic Pepsuber ad from the past Super Bowl, I wanted to go full-on Pepsi shill. But, like last year's epicness, I dropped the plans (but kept the avatar) and assumed the mysterious status as TZ's "Goose-Strangler", which had mysterious powers like summoning Engine-O G12 and duties like deciding a new god for the forum. I wish that the thread could become more epic (I would have gone through more of the candidates Cowell-style), but I was glad I could finish the job. Remember kids, next April Fool's Day, bow down to Mel Gibson!

The Goose-Strangler Will Be Back Next Time, in Quantum Of Solace. Because I love that job.

It's cool. The important thing is that you helped out in some form.

It was a fierce battle fighting against a massive army of haters, british comic book writers, a Sentai teams. And I barely had any of the help I had against Fugate/Saxon. Pulling out a victory like that is more epic. Plus some help from some awesome characters as well.

Maybe I should write a story based off this and post it on the story board.

I thought it was an over-abundance of forumers? Same thing happened when Family Guy aired Sunday.

I have to admit, it kind of took the fun out when I'd have to wait thirty seconds, for a page to load, thirty seconds to see a topic, thirty to reply to the topic, thirty to post actual message, etc.

I'm also thinking about taking some of the stuff I created during AFD and turn that into a story. Stuff like how I obtained mysterious powers that allowed me to summon Rick Rolls and Motivationals and how I got Engine-O G12. I'll probably develop this further in the coming weeks.

I want to believe it was just the increased site traffic, but even in the early morning hours when people sleep and midday hours when most people are at work/in school, the site was still slow. I thought it was very lame this year- although, I'm sure I didn't help with my mass spamming of Lacus lines, and the fact that nobody was around. That's how bored I was. For the record, I really do hate the character and I was purposely trying to be annoying. Anyways, the whole 1999 idea was good, but I missed the wild flashing back ground and coming out of last year with the Master thing, it was a very tough day to top. I think the best moment I had was attempting to come onto CartoonOverlord while he was Rorschach XD

It was definitely tame, although I was busy enough with work that I wouldn't have really had time for a running joke that would have lasted all day. So, it was about right for me. I was reasonably entertained, which is good enough for me.

I thought it was all right. It seemed rowdier in other years when I pretty much avoided the site because of it.

There were a lot of good thread ideas, but many of them seemed to die on the vine from lack of participation. I thought the Ayn Rand thing and Ed's Ask a Spartan thread were the funniest.

It was fun to post things that usually wouldn't make it through, though. My, "please start an argument with me" thread only got one response. Thanks Han. But even so, I would start it every day if it wouldn't get me banninated.

All the perverted Ohirime pics on the Adult Swim board actually managed to gross me out, though.

I had a lot of work to do yesterday, so I couldn't post as much as I might have wanted to, but I tried to contribute to the madness.

I had originally planned to have all of my posts refer to an Obscure 60's Sitcom Channel, then stick on a fake sitcom name on each post, but I was thinking on the fly and just ran out of titles. Like the wild caribou, I was doomed to return to familiar territory and just wound up ranting about magical girls and princesses.

I still had fun, though.

Oh lord it's off-setting everything. I do apologize for that. I'm being serious. If I had known that the tables would be screwed up even after going back to my old username, I never would've changed it in the first place, even for a gag. I've tried to do some damage control (if you'll notice, I closed many AS threads twice), but unfortunately the long name still remains in some places. :(

Other than that, I had fun. Though it still doesn't hold a candle to 2004.

I'll agree that the lag killed alot of my energy about the day. There's also the fact I went through the day with nothing then a one hour nap, so my energy and creativity was basically zilch. I just decided to do the 'pretend to be a character' schtick and try and enjoy the madness.

It was a little bland but I think also nicely restrained. In past years, folks have pushed too hard and tried to get away with stuff which by all rights should have them banned. Maybe the 'everyone goes mad for a day' idea has run its course and next year we should try for something a bit more creative.

I'm pleased that there was far less "talk like a noob/l33t speak" going around this year, because honestly, that gets old, and fast. I think the 1999 motif gave many people a good foundation for which to make "themed" and purposefully dated posts, which were quite amusing. Though at times, the irony could be laid on a bit thick; this was especially true in the Family Guy thread I made.

And yeah, the slowness of the site (which I'm fairly certain WASN'T on purpose, as much as it did unintentionally add to the 1999/56k atmosphere) didn't help matters. Often I'd make a post and by the time it loaded my reply, there'd be two others who made posts ahead of me. I barely posted at all that evening, partially because of that.

Overall it wasn't that exciting, but I did have a lot of fun writing like a 12-year-old fangirl for awhile :p I didn't really browse as much as I wanted because it was SO FRUSTRATINGLY SLOW, the only site to give me problems yesterday.

Having just moved into a new place last weekend, most of my time was spent walking around town to acquaint myself with the area, shopping for essential supplies, and unpacking and sorting out my room. I also had to search for jobs and work on my resume, which took a toll on my mood. Add to that the fact that it was drizzling outside all day, and TZ's slow response time, and it all piled up to the point where I just didn't care enough to post more than a dozen times. Compare that to Harold Saxon last year when I think I posted about 100 to 150 times.

It was also really hard to find opportune places to pop up as Garth Marenghi. It seems a lot of us went with relatively obscure themes this year. I still haven't bothered to look up "Lacus" and find out what his deal is. (Something tells me I don't want to know.)

Where did the painter theme come from? Two or three people had their names changed to Rennaissance/post-Renn artists. I know James was one of them.

It was a Wednesday, which is tough for most people. I'm not surprised things weren't as riled up as last year, and frankly I'm glad. I wouldn't have been able to keep up with everything, since I wasn't at the computer very much yesterday.

I hardly stuck around since it was a weekday, so I can't really say. We watched Alice in Wonderland in our anime club yesterday as a joke, so I got the unbirthday thread idea from there...nothing special.

One thing I did find funny was the lagging on the site. With all the conficker virus hype going around, that was a pretty cunning prank...even if that wasn't the whole idea. :p

I think this was kind of why it was boring, honestly. Toonzone regulars are too conditioned to be well-behaved here, so their troll-fu is weak. The anime board had it right when it jokingly called its collection thread "our d-grade trolling." The only exceptions were the people who were clever enough to rise above the limitations like the Ayn Rand thread, the people that were clever enough to take good advantage of a theme like on the comic book board and the actual troll attacks, only barely disguised as "joke" troll attacks, that Don East had to fend off all day.

A lot of the rest of it was obscure memes, randomness and pic spamming, not the kind of pokes at the community that would draw a lot of responses or get people riled up.

I thought the day was okay. It was quite fun initially when I decided to gave in and do what I've always wanted to do: Masquerade as Objectivist philosopher Ayn Rand and just prattle about capitalism, individual liberty, and altruism being the ideology of the parasites. The unfortunate thing was what it got... tiresome after a bit and kindof difficult to top my ramblings. So I kindof petered off as time went slower there.

Unfortunate also I wasn't able to change my name to Ayn Rand to meet that (probably just a bold name person thing, oh well), but oh well, I had fun while it lasted. Maybe next year will be interesting...

...Maybe a little Montesquieu for next 2010 will do the trick. ;3

I think for me, it might be the fact that my posting style is insane anyway. I tend to either post long winded rants/analysis or insane jokey posts. So because I'm posting a mix daily, I don't really see the need to just go batjive insane. I think the 1999 theme gave the day a sense of focus, but was mostly ignored and so we saw the same jokes as usual (including painfully obvious fake news).

Another thing I found lacking were actual April Fools gags, the type people actually put enough effort into that some folks will actually believe it at first. Arlong Park, for example, had some really well put together April Fools jokes, such as female Luffy and One Piece Movie 9 being announced by FUNi:

My original plan was to take the best comments I posted anywhere on the forum and run them through Babelfish, but in the end I turned into an obsessive beef zealot. Despite Karl trying to change every instance of the word BEEF in my posts into PORK or CHICKEN or STEVE on the "Pokemon/DBZ Forum", I think I won a few converts.

I'd've been here till midnight last night, but there was a poetry slam downtown I wanted to check out which ran a little bit later than I was hoping.

Probably because forums are frequented by young people with a chip on their shoulder. Too much effort for most to create a truely memorable joke when they just see a free ticket to act like an ass. With TZ, the logic tends to be that we're so orderly normally that going crazy as the 'WTF?' of a good prank makes sense. Not sure what the rest of the net's excuse was.

I think one of the most dissapointing was OAFE.net's effort- turn the site pink, have all 5 reviewers post a new review but claim they were written by the reviewer's girlfriend or wife  Star Craft did a good one though- a fake giant robot unit made out of combining bases, speaking in quotes from MMPR, Transformers and Short Circuit :D

While that may be true, I think good jokes really arrive when they're presented at the last minute, from the top of somebody's head. Often times when you try to plan it out, or take too long mulling over 'whats memorable and what's not', things eventually fall flat. Look at last year- I had a grand time pretending to be the Master's wife, only for him to start a full on war/ take over. My role in that totally evolved from simply hitting on every poster to pimping out my 'husband'. Especially on a site with so many users, it's hard to find a rock solid routine that people are going to continue responding to- this year most importantly, I couldn't find alot of situations that presented the opportunity for a running gag.

I had originally planned to type a fake news report as a prank, like I did last year (the previous year, I did the same thing on TV.com's forums and some people got really hot under the collar about it. I'm continually amazed by how deep some people's fandom runs). Unfortunately, I couldn't think of a good one this year. It's hard to come up with a fake report because of all the off-the-wall- stuff that actually is happening. The Sci-Fi channel changing it's name to "SyFy" and Cartoon Network introducing a live action block next year, for example.

I tried to spread that one about Movie 9 coming over but no one responded, guess it was too obvious for me since Quexinos let me in on the joke over at Fun Piece or rather Fun Pork City as it was called for the day. I even commented on the video myself just to be a part of it. I just found one comment on the video to be hilarious.

I guess. Don't get me wrong, I have fun getting to spam one full day out of the entire year, but in all honesty, I think just having the whole day spamming without much effort has gotten a tad old. If you think about it, it really stretches what April Fools Day is actually supposed to be about. Back during my first April Fools Day here in 2005, I saw more threads that were actually in the style of April Fools Day, but each year it's become more random memes, spam pictures, and role playing. Definitely glad this is only a once a year thing.

I'd say it's quite difficult to play a 'practical joke' on somebody over the internet, considering it IS April Fools Day and there are so many informational sites online that unless you're running a company that can control the flow of facts, most pranks are going to be discerned as fake. Not to mention, especially on this site, there is a small percent of people who are actually going to take you seriously if you try to 'pull one over' on them.

Meh. If I hadn't been so worn out that I had to go to bed early, I would have come in near the end and said something like "I didn't want to do this, but I now have to play the most powerful card of all!" which would then be something just totally random and out of left field..... even more so than the Samurai Pizza Cats and Dark Helmet. :anime:

I just sat back and watched the world burn. :p It's entertaining, as per usual - though I think people should have milked the 1999 thing a bit more. I actually thought up a running gag where I'm a time-traveller who's failing and travelling through time and keeps thinking he's in the wrong time period and messing with people.

Like, I would have made a thread where I try to start the "PAUL IS DEAD!!!" rumors, than say "Wait, the internet didn't exist in the 1960s!" then hop into my time machine and try to convince people that you can play as Rosalina in Super Mario Universe and then go "Wait, this can't be 2024, the interbox is too slow!" and so on and so forth. So he's an intertemporal Loki that keeps ending up in Toon Zone on April Fools' Day because... it's the nexus of the universe or something I dunno who cares. And it would have been hilarious.

...buuuuuut I didn't think of it until 9:30 last night and never got a chance. Maybe I'll try it next year, adding an entirely new layer of irony - I'm pretending to be a person pretending to be time traveller that doesn't know what year it is, but the guy I'm pretending to be thinks it's 2009 meaning that he, too, has the year wrong!

HUMOR! I HAS IT!

Let me just say that I was a bit dissappointed about April Fools this year, even I thought I was a member this time, there was one annoying problem:

Too many people in TZ = Slow website speed

Also, we broke a record for a Family Guy episode for most people here, and 3 days later, it gets broken again, almost making me think, "Is 2009 TZ's next big year?"

You know what, I'm just gonna quote Izzy from TDI, for the heck of it:

True, but if the person is clever enough, practical jokes on April Fools Day can still work. Take the example from Arlong Park I linked to. The people from there created a fake spoiler that in the latest chapter of One Piece, Luffy became female, which if you knew what was going on in the current story, it wasn't such a farfetched situation. They drew a fake page from the manga (very well done I might add), made up a script, translated the script into Japanese, and then printed it and took a picture of it with a cellphone, to make it look like he's really showing a page from the latest chapter. This joke did actually fool quite a few people, believe it or not. Although, what did make it work was that it was posted the day BEFORE April Fools.

I do think theming definitely helps spice things up around the forum, too. Although, I think it would have been more interesting if we all had actually followed the whole "this is now back in 1999" theme. I think a really potential year for April Fools on here could be 2 years from now, 2011, because even though it's a Friday, most likely everyone will be able to really participate from the afternoon till midnight. I just hope the site doesn't lag as much then, though. >_>

Closest I got was having my fake personna make a creepy comment about little girls. Though that was based on an old Penny Arcade comic about store trade ins (the unseen narrator urging the kid on by suggesting he trade in his kid sister).

I didn't put as much effort into my Bizarro Thread as I wanted to, but I didn't do it last year and I didn't want another year to go by. I felt a few of the joke threads should've had more attention in general.

I thought the 1999 stuff was pretty funny, but to me, the best part about TZ April Fools are the people pretending to be characters (Rorschach, Cartman, and of course, King Leonidas), and the random pictures, which always make me laugh.

Well, this being my first April Fools Day on ToonZone, I do have to agree that it did feel somewhat lackluster. The 1999 theme was good, and it is fun to just randomly spam for a day, but still, I think more people(including myself) could have been more original in their jokes rather than just spouting out random internet memes.

Though I did like how my Giygas thread turned out, 12 posts isn't that bad for a first timer like me. Who knows, maybe next year I'll act like 10,000 year old Porky/Pokey for a day...

Yeah, the slowness really bugged me. Sometimes it even took ten minutes to load.

Well, since having my first April Fools on TZ it felt interestingly weird, and scary. The reason why it felt weird and scary at the same time is well one of the titles on any of the forums were changed and had nonsense all over it. And I thought it must be the Conflicker Virus it must infected TZ. And add to that my computer was very slow when I got the forum. And then today I tried going to TZ and everything was back to normal, the names were back, and my computer was fast again going to the forum. I didn't knew TZ does April Fools but now I get the picture. Now that was April Fools. :D :anime:

Nothing really memorable. But this is my first AFD that I had any clue what was going on, so that's a start. :p

If Beat's cool with being the bad guy, of course.

Sure, why not? It's all parody anyway.

Truth is, I was posting the last few on my Blackberry, so I lacked the equipment to post my last revelation, that the Orihime-haters were being led by Ishida as part of a massive plan to discredit IchiHime so he could have her to himself. Then I was about to roll out the mecha from Gaoranger to Boukenger. And it would have been epic.

My only real complaint with this year? Too many rape jokes. That was just too low brow for me and felt like a desperate attempt to appear edgy when you otherwise couldn't get away with it on this board. I'd be thrilled if I see less of that next year.
*looks at his posts on those threads*

 I did that? Wow, and I typically think that rape is a very delicate subject. I apologize if I offended anyone, but at least I don't yell SURPRISE!

Darn it! Because of all the panic for that Conficker virus, my mom made me stay off the computer all April Fools Day! :(

There's always next year, though! :)

If April Fool's went away, I wouldn't miss it either.

It's too predictable. Perhaps Matt Wilson was right (!) when he said that it should be on a day no one expects, but I really wouldn't care then either. It's just day of tom dickery followed by lecture after lecture of why it's not funny, followed then by people saying that they liked the year before better, when I clearly remember the year before getting just as much flack for being unfunny.

The fact that the Entertainment Industry has been putting out legitimate news more and more on that day each year isn't helping matters either.

Last year I suggested that we hold it on 3/31 or 4/2 just to mess with people, but nobody really latched onto the idea, so it was scrapped pretty quickly. I didn't even bring up the idea this year. It's just day of tom dickery followed by lecture after lecture of why it's not funny, followed then by people saying that they liked the year before better, when I clearly remember the year before getting just as much flack for being unfunny. Well everyone has their favorite year; as I've said, mine's 2004, and if you partook in that year's festivities, you'd know why. But it's not always the case that "last year was better, yet everyone complained THAT year, too". I thought 2006 was a lot more fun than 2005 (though part of that was due to, not to brag, my Soviet Russian persona), and 2008, while not great, was a vast improvement over 2007.

Is it that important that this year's be more fun than last year's? When you were a kid, did you ever play with your toys and say "Well this was okay, but I had more fun when I played with these toys yesterday." The point is to kick back and go nuts. It's not a competition to have more fun than the last time.

I guess. All of them have just been days to go insane, which I believe most of us need just for one day of the year. Everyone is going to have a different opinion of which year was better than others, especially depending upon how long you've been around. Although, this year has a legitimate excuse for not being the greatest, with the site lagging all day and all. I mean, after most of us have been well behaved for every other day of the year, getting the chance to go nuts for the day is both a reward and big break.

Exactly. Something about the Internet seems to encourage this constant judgment and comparison of everything we do/say/watch/read, and it really sucks the fun out of things sometimes.

Every once in a while, we need to stop rating and ranking things (against other things, against previous versions of the same thing, against our expectations going into same thing), and just enjoy them.
