Outside of the typical general education classses such as History, Math, Science and English, many schools of course also offer electives. Some electives can be pretty cool and unique, because there are topics not taught in school on an average basis.

For me, I have to say the most unique class my school has offered is History of Manga. You heard me, such a class where you actually go through manga history in Japan and read numerous manga as homework assignments exists. As soon as I heard about it, I took the chance and signed up for this semester. A class where a personal hobby of mine has become schoolwork is pretty bizzare once you think about it, especially considering it's manga. It's a fun class also because I've gotten to learn about certain things concerning manga I've never even looked into before. I've also broaden my horizons with the large amount of manga I've been required to read. Who would have thought I'd have to read Sazae-San, Metropolis, Astro Boy, Cyborg009, Black Jack, A.A Prime, Gundam, Dragon Ball, Ranma 1/2, etc. for a class?

Even though it is manga, we have had very intelligent discussions in class concerning numerous aspects of each reading we've done. Of course there is still a midterm exam and a final exam, plus a few essays, but considering how it's about a topic I'm heavily interested in, it really isn't bad. We also have to create a short original manga, in groups, during the semester

Here's proof this class exists, if you don't believe me: https://banner.newpaltz.edu:8484/pls/PROD/bwckzsect.p_dsp_details?p_term=200901&p_crn=2479

Anybody else have some unique classes they've seen or had at their school? I'm sure there has to be at least a few.

That manga class sounds really awesome. I would like to take it just for the fun of it. The most unique class my school has offered that I can think of now is a class on Harry Potter. We have a month long class in January and we can choose different classes than we usually do for our majors. I didn't take the course since I didn't have much interest in Harry Potter, but I thought that it was really cool that they would offer a college level course on the series.

My school's Japanese Lit/Culture class was a pretty unique one, I'd say. Noji-sensei is a little hard to understand, but she is awesome. We had a unit on manga, and we watched Princess Mononoke at the end of the semester. That class was my first A. I'd take it again if I could.

One college that I was thinking of going to taught a class on Jim Morrison LOL. I forget what it was called, it was something to the effect of The History of Jim Morrison. That was the only strange class that the college offered though.

My school has a class called the History of Hip Hop or something like that.

That sounds cool. One person I used to know told me about taking a class at her college called The History of Rock 'n Roll. One of my friends also told me about a class at the college she went to that involved Star Trek.

My old language arts teacher used to show us episodes of Justice League Unlimited, for no reason at all.

Good times

Those aren't that uncommon. Both my high school and my current college have one.

I'm currently taking a J.R.R. Tolkien/C.S. Lewis class - yay for being an English major. We read some Lord of the Rings and we're going to read some Narnia among other things, so that's fun. But that's about all I've got. Small schools don't tend to have as much class variety.

Next Fall, my college is offering a class called "South Park and Contemporary Issues." Basically, they look at the episodes and have class discussions about the issues the shows brings up and parodies.

My school has an afterschool "course" (more like an after school activity) where you can talk about japanese manga, anime, and culture.

I might join next year, but mostly everyone in the club is an anime "otaku" whose every fifth word they say is anime...

wait did I just describe myself?

We had an after school walking club were I went. (for weight loss and exercise) We would walk through the halls of the school for half an hour or so. It was open to all connected with the school. Students, faculty and other staff. One lady from the food preparation department came by and walked with us.
..She made the best pies ever. Well..she wanted to lose weight too.:)

I'm not really surprised about the History of Manga. There's a professor here at my college who's a big into Japan. In his Values of Other Culutres: Japan course, along with modern Japanese classics he had Barefoot Gen assigned.

If he had the chance, I'm sure he would want to teach a class totally with Manga.

But this isn't the most unique class I ever had. I had two actually.

One was an Intro to Literature course, but with all with Science Fiction books. I was in haven :D

The other, Explorations of the universe, was unique in that it not only examined Science, but also its history, social trends, society, and how all this affects our view of the world.

This was no rote astronomy class. The issue was not just about science, but about humanity as well.

Lucky. My intro to lit class was all on (and I'm telling the truth here) internet romance books.

In college I had a sociology class entitled "Diversity in the Mystery Novel". We mainly just read paperback mystery novels and watched movies based on them. Occasionally we had to comment on the diversity within them, but mainly it was just reading mystery novels and watching movies.

My high school did have a communication class, basically involving TV and Radio...and that's the only unique one I can somewhat think of. The class even did a weekly show in the morning airing throughout all of the TVs in the school.

My Alma Mater offered a Conceptual Illustration course that was taught by a penciller for one of the various Batman comics. That had to be one of the best classes I ever had. We designed weapons, tools, vehicles, and props for original science fiction and fantasy series, and we closely studied the concept art of Syd Mead (Blade Runner) and Ralph McQaurrie (Empire Strikes Back). We studied the Art Deco style of the Batman Animated Series and its then-unheard of black paper background stills. It was essentially a course on how to build a believable universe for fictional characters to exist in. It was too much fun.

Ouch, this totally blows. That's like one step above anime romance fanfics. :crying:
