OK. I had a good idea. Create a repository of quality fiction on the Internet. Think about it, with all of the poor writing clogging up the tubes, this could be a good way to get right to the good stuff.

It can be fan-fiction, but it doesn't have to be. The only requirements is that it's a good, prime quality story.

EDIT: I'll add one.
Not Playing With A Full Deck: A Dark Knight/Batman Begins fan fic, crosses over with Superman
(WARNING: Not for the faint of heart. Very dark and contains adult content.)
After the Joker feels insulted by a story on him, by news anchor Lois Lane, he decides to exact his revenge.

A very dark, but very satisfying and suspenseful story. Everyone's in character (albeit not contrained by the PG-13 rating),

EDIT 2: OK. How has no-one posted? Does no one know any good fiction on the internet?

I don't read much fanfic anymore. It's not necessarily that I lost interest, but the well is dry. For the entertainment I cared enough about to seek fanfic of, I exhausted the available material long ago. Searching for and reading decent fanfic also takes a lot of time and patience that I'd rather commit to other activities.

I typically prefer reading fiction on actual paper, but from time to time, I do wander across decent original stories online. It can either be free material from published authors or short stories by someone who just likes to write. Somehow, this tends to be science fiction.

A few examples I have bookmarked:

Blindsight (http://www.rifters.com/real/Blindsight.htm) by Peter Watts - A first-contact scenario involving vampires in space, written by a marine biologist turned hard science fiction author? The idea was too absurd for me to avoid.

BLIT (http://www.infinityplus.co.uk/stories/blit.htm) by David Langford - More thought experiment than story, but the short story format lends itself well to this sort of thing. There's a lot of other fiction on the same site, but I haven't had the time to browse around yet.

Fine Structure (http://qntm.org/?structure) and Ed Stories (http://qntm.org/?ed) by Sam Hughes - Lighter reading, softer scifi, found while meandering around Everything2 (http://www.everything2.com/). I'm still working through his other stories (http://qntm.org/?fiction).

Speaking of Everything2, you can usually find all kinds of odd short stories (http://everything2.com/title/The%2520demon%2520was%2520just%2520under%2520three%2520feet%2520tall) there.

If you, like me, find the whole Wold Newton concept interesting, than I'd recommend this page:The Wold Newton Universe- Fan Fiction (http://www.pjfarmer.com/woldnewton/Fanfic.htm) which contains some really good stories of varying length. A personal favorite of mine would be Depths by Matthew Baugh, which pits Arsene Lupin against two of the greatest evil masterminds in fiction, although their true identites are not revealed until the end.

However, if it's original fiction, you want, Project Gutenberg (http://www.gutenberg.org) is a good place to go. I'm currently reading The Wandering Jew by Eugene Sue via that site and so far, it's been a great read. However, much like Romey, I do prefer reading my literature on paper, call me old-fashioned, but there's something about holding a book in my hand and be able to say that it's mine and mine alone that I find enjoyable.

Thanks to public domain, the works of H.P. Lovecraft are now available on-line! That's right, Cthulhu and other cosmic horrors are avaiable to be read free!

There's also Baen's Free Library, in which several full books are available to be read:

But for fanfiction in general:

The Works of CSS.Stravag (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1183470/CSS_Stravag): A surprisingly good, prolific writer who loves Military SF and Anime, and combines them with fun results. His earlier work seems unrefined, but his most recent stuff is good.

To be fair, there is some OCC, but in a good way. Kira Yamato is mad e into a real bada**. Actually, it seems like everyone took a level in coolness.

Reality Flux: Digimon and Bolo (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3462524/1/Reality_Flux_Bolo_and_Digimon): Probably the most unlikely of Crossovers truns out to be a rather fun read. Fast paced, well written, the only problem is perhaps the Digimon could be better described.

First Contact: (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2639043/1/First_Contact) Number 6 from Battlestar Galatica has a bad run in. Hilarity ensues.

See The Sky Again (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3207630/1/See_The_Sky_Again): The fic that got me into fanficition. In interesting story with character development and a good plot. It also takes a step forward, and actually discribes the characters, something which most fanfics tend to leave out.

Tiberium Wars (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3654039/1/Tiberium_Wars): Ever get angry when that Game tie-in novel totally fails? Well, someone took that anger, and put it to constructive use. A Command and Conquer 3 fic that many fans wish was published.

The works of Chris McFeely (http://digipedia.db-destiny.net/misc/fanfic.htm): A few good stories, but the cream of the crop are the scriptfics. Some of the best parodies ever done.
