Somebody called the Flintstones an over rated cartoon on another message board, while I disagree with that comment.
I got to thinking, is the Flintstones as good as its source, the Honeymooners?
I know this is a message board to discuess classic cartoons, since the Flintstones is part of a topic, it is a retro cartoon discuession, just includes some live action in the mix.
It depends on your taste, I loved both shows, but the Flintstones could never duplicate the thing that made the Honeymooners a great show, the comic timing of Jackie Gleason and Art Carney. Like when Ralph and Ed were playing pool, Ed took his time to hit the pool ball, he teased many times that he was oing to break, until finally Ralph yells at him "Will you strike the ball already!" The Flintstones could never do that.

Yes. As far as I'm concerned, The Flintstones is in the top 3 when it comes to cartoons. What made The Flintstones great was that it wasn't all about comedy. How many other cartoons could pull off a child's birth in those days? I also think it's a little unfair to compare cartoons to live shows.
If the Flintstones were patterned after The Honeymooners, Fred would brive a dus--er, drive a bus.....a school bus, which he did in one story, and we know how THAT turned out.

I had always thought one element of the Flintstones that you didn't see in the Honeymooners was the mean boss, yelling "You're Fired"! I had never seen an apisode take place outside of the house before, and figured you never saw his boss. But in th eNew Year's marathon on WPIX, I caught one with the boss, and Ralph was in his office pretending to be the boss to show off for someone, and he had to explain what he was doing in there. Otherwise, he did not seem much like Mr. Slate. But then in the earlier Flintstones, Mr Slate was completely different, and not that yelling type, and the crabby younger taller guy who became Mr Slate was then the foreman Joe Rockhead. (Later, when he became Slate, Rockhead became the name of someone else).
So just as Flintstones was based on Honeymooners, the Jetsons has been said to be based on Blondie. That does fit, with the mean boss, (though I always thought of Blondie as the present day counterpart to both Flintstones and Jetsons); so I'm wondering if they simply readapted the Flintstones after Blondie/Jetsons by changing Mr Slate like that. (Into Dithers/Spacely, basically). I did not follow exactly when in the series that change took place. Was it after the '62 season?

The Blondie/Jetsons connection makes sense, since Penny Singleton was both Blondie Bumstead AND Jane Jetson.
