Tom, only I can only remember him winning once (when his relative came. Also, there have been neutral endings, which I don't count)
I also prefer cats..

Tom, lets face it, what redemming qualities does Jerry have? He's a violent parasite that more often than not provokes Tom into retaliation. And once had Tom executed.
And Tom gets bonus points for being named Tom, like :tom:.

depends on the episode. sometimes i will root for tom when jerry just provokes him, but sometimes ill root for jerry if its toms fault.

When Tom is the clear-cut instigator or antagonist, then the actions of Jerry and the other characters seem justified. However, in many shorts the directors (Gene Dietch in particular) seemed to follow the dictum, "No matter what the situation, no matter who's at fault, Tom must lose. Cat=Bad, Mouse, Dog, Bird, Everything Else=Good." In many T&J shorts Tom seems to be the victim of arbitrary mistreatment by other characters, sometimes even when he doesn't do anything to provoke the abuse and humiliation that's handed to him.
Couple this with the fact that Jerry is, let's face it, kind of a jerk, and I often find myself favoring Tom by default.

But now that I'm older, I see that a lot of things usually aren't Tom's fault and he shouldn't always lose. For example, in the "Mouse Cleaning" short, I feel Tom didn't really deserve what he got.

I root for Tom, reason being in almost every episode he gets some sort of mistreatment.
Tom.
Jerry is a super-jerk.

I agree with Deadman... for me it depends on what's happening in that short...:p

Tom of course, even as ridiculously sadistic he got towards Jerry at points. Spike clearly suffered from the stereotypical "dogs must hate cats" thing, so Tom was always in the wrong, except when he cured he and Tyke's hiccups and forced Jerry to leave for fear of no consequences for Tom.
Tom for the win--he's just doing what all cats must do--keeping any place free of rodents--rodents like Jerry.
And once had Tom executed.
And Tom gets bonus points for being named Tom, like :tom:.How's that for losing your head?

I think they are both great characters but if I had to pick I would choose Jerry.

I prefer Tom because I think he is a more interesting character. Jerry is boring by comparison.

I have to go with Tom because he earns my sympathy through his conflicted ordeal. I never bought in to the idea that the bigger predatory animal is automatically the antagonist and therefore must suffer.

Ha, Tom and Jerry. Biggest ripoff of Itchy and Scratchy I've ever seen...What!? That was a joke right? T&J predates that show-within-a-show by several decades.
Lets face it, Tom and Jerry both have had equal chances to be the guy who is either dumping or getting dumped on. Only difference is Jerry does his bad deeds with personality while Tom just does it by simply chasing the mouse...and when was the last time Tom was really really nice? Sure both of them have been evil but when was he ever nice? Last time I watched the show Jerry was helping a suicidal duckling live while Tom was ready at every turn to put the duck out of it's misery by eating it. You really can't find an example like that for Tom.
Jerry has different sides: he can be little weasel, a protagonist, or simply a victim who can't help himself. Tom is either evil, a victim, or both. I like Jerry because he has more sides...and it's funnier to see the little guy beating the crap out of the big guy.

I never cared for any of the "classic" cartoons: Tom & Jerry, The Flinstones, Looney Toones. I appreciate their place in history, but they just don't entertain me at all.
If I had to pick Tom or Jerry though, I'd go for Tom. I guess I relate more with him than Jerry in their never ending battle.
