View Full Version : The End Of Chowder?

Wow, check this out:
http://animationguildblog.blogspot.com/2008/12/at-network-of-cartoons.html
Don't want to click the link? Here's the whole bit (and including more info on Adventure time):
From TAG Blog (Steve Hulett):
I spent a long stretch of a rainy Wednesday afternoon at Cartoon Network's Burbank Studio, where I chatted up three floors of animation artists and directors and got informed of the following:
Chowder is winding down on what is -- apparently -- the final nine half-hours of the series.
Thirteen half-hours of Adventure Time (http://frederatorblogs.com/frederator_studios/2007/11/03/algebraic/) -- out of the prolific development shop of Mr. Fred Seibert -- launched last week. (If you follow the link, you will note that Adventure Time the short was produced a while ago ... and produced under the umbrella of Fred S./Random Cartoons/Nickelodeon. But AT has since moved over to Cartoon Network ...)
The 20 new episodes of Flapjack are well underway (but you know this from the previous post about CN, do you not?)
And there are 39 shorts in development at the studio (which I call "son of workshop of Fred S."). And a Wise Old Animation Vet told me:I would be real surprised if the studio doesn't get two, three or more series going from this crop of shorts. I don't think they'll roll new series out all at once, but one at a time. Over a couple of years."
Would that it will happen. (And I got to see a loop of test animation from one of the shorts, and whattayaknow! It looks like a cartoon! An old time, hand-drawn type cartoon!)
(What a concept!)

According to "Uncle Phil" (Phil Rynda, the character designer for the show)
Don't count Chowder out yet. We received an order for 9 new half hours... but they weren't officially ordered as the "final 9".

Wow, already? I know he only means that those final hours are only begining to be made but still...
Goodbye Chowder (atleast in a couple of years), you made me beleive in a network again.

"Beleive it, kid!" Sorry, couldn't resist.
But yeah, Chowder is going to be gone, atleast in about a year when the episode is done, and it will probably be a few months before the actual airings of the episode.

People are always concerned about their job security; you all need to take this news with a grain of salt. The author of that Blog entry even mentioned that he isn’t providing any “official word” and is merely conveying the concerns that a few of the staffers had. Until C. H. Greenblatt mentions something on his Blog, I would recommend that you do not panic.

True. And let's look at the bright side, like the new episodes of Flapjack in production right now
And 39 Cartoonstitute shorts are being developed already. Wow.

And for that, Cartoonstitute makes 13 half-hours slated for 2009.

Again, this is not official. A lot can happen between now and then, and even if a lot doesn’t happen, they could still choose to order new episodes. I mean, Nickelodeon practically cancelled “The Fairly OddParents”, but once all of their other animated programs bombed, they went ahead and ordered another truckload of episodes because it was still a contender in the ratings. I think people should wait for something more concrete before they write Chowder’s obituary.

It's just a guess made by some people working at the network, worried about their job security. Those 9 half-hours were never ordered as the final few. It they were, then Greenblatt would have stated so on his blog. I feel that the series will go on for more than 49 episodes.

Maybe C.H. is tricking us, or maybe someone didn't hear anything right.
Hopefully, this isn't true, it's too good of a show to be suddenly canceled.

:^: Right. So far, this news is mostly speculation. Let's not throw a going away party for Chowder until we hear something official.
Should Chowder be cancelled, that's it for me watching Cartoon Network. It's been a long ride, and I'll be very happy to get off.

Guys, come on. Do you really think that they would cancel one of their most successful shows? I'm pretty sure that a show like Chowder would last longer than two seasons.

Exactly. While this does seem like sad news for people, like me, who enjoy Chowder, it's nothing official as of now. When I hear something more concrete comes along, say C. H. Greenblatt posts something on his blog, then I'll believe it. As for this, I just have more doubts about it since it isn't official.

Yes, but how many seasons did Naruto last, 8 or 9? If this were true, Chowder will have only lasted 2.

Absalutaly! People need to wait until CN or the creator announce the end, otherwise it's JUST an internet rumor....

Chowder's popular enough that a DVD is already released. How often does Cartoon Network release DVDs of their shows?

Ah, that sucks, but at least Naruto is still somewhat of a presence on CN...
As for Chowder, like others have said, it's not over until either the creator or CN says so.....

Guys, I wouldn't be worried until we hear something from Greenblatt himself. They still have at least 24 episodes to air and the show is getting consistant runtime on CN. I honestly would not worry about it

I'm just not buying it. Chowder's only 1 and 1/4 seasons into its run, it's gotten a DVD already and everyone except my sister likes it. (Her loss.) This show has way too much momentum built up already, and believe me, if Chowder were coming to an end, Greenblatt would have said something about it in his blog.

Chowder already has 49 episodes greenlighted, which is reaching the limit of episodes most CN originals go to.

Ok, so lets pretend for a moment that Chowder reaches that episode limit and CN ends it. So? The show would still have a looooooonnnnnnng way to go before it runs out of new episodes to air.
So nobody should be carving it's tombstone just yet.

One thing I would like to know was CN's thinking when ordering Chowder episodes. If they didn't intend Chowder to go over the "episode limit", why did they bother ordering so many episodes in less than a year?

Good theory, but hasn't CN extended some show in the past? Such as Ed Edd and Eddy and The Powerpuff Girls?

Even if Chowder was cancelled as of today, with the ammount of unaired episodes they havent aired yet Chowder would last for maybe another 8-9 months with a few repeats added in here and there....

While many recent shows have stopped at 52 (Ben 10, Gym Partner, Lazlo), none of them were as huge of a ratings success like Chowder (though Ben 10 is the exception, though it got a sequal series). I see it getting picked up for another 20 episode season, and then a final order of 9 episodes, bring it to 78 episodes (which is how much PPG and Dexter got)

 Impossible.
Chowder is young and thriving. It's also pretty popular. Chowder isn't going anywhere anytime soon. I think what the people at CN were trying to say was that Chowder is wrapping up it's final order of episodes, the last nine episodes that were ordered. This only means that the network has yet to order more episodes. Doesn't mean they won't. They just haven't. Therefore, this is currently the final order.
Scared me there for a minute.

That's right. When Greenblatt confirmed the 9 new half hours on his blog, he even stated in his post that he and the crew working on the show don't know how to feel about the number since it isn't a full season. Obviously these people are worried about losing their jobs and may assume the worst. I'm not worried, because I believe the reason CN didn't order a full season was because they just ordered the 2nd season and they probably didn't feel obligated to order another 20 half hours until they see how successful the 2nd season is. I'm sure we'll have more Chowder.

I saw another post on Tv.com's Chowder board. The poster said his/her dad works on the show, and he said after all of this year's new episodes have aired, the show is getting cancelled. I'm scared now, because we now have two sources hinting that it might in fact happen.

The responsibles for the cancelation of a Show it's not exactly the creator himself, but the Network Executives are.

Uh...does this person have ANY proof at all of this? Just because some random person from a TV.com forum says something doesn't mean it's true. You have nothing to be scared about, because those 9 half hours were never intended to be the final episodes (it was just the latest batch of episodes CN ordered, so it is in a way "the last episodes" for the crew to be working on....until CN renews Chowder again. Read my previous post.
