hey everyone, 2009 is slowly coming to shank 2008, which means a new year is around the corner.
anyone have any new years goals they would like to share? I'm probably going to cut down on computer time and cut down on sugary drinks and snacks.

The main thing for me is to spend less time on the computer. I can't really think of anything else right now.
At the risk of sounding redundant, I too have the goal of spending less time on the computer, as well as budgeting my time better.

That's one of mine too. I also plan to get more exercise and stop gorging myself at every meal. I gained about 30 lbs. since March, that isn't good.

-Getting back in shape.
-Getting a normal sleeping pattern back.
-Breaking through this writer's block I've had since October.
-Getting a new job.
-Spending less time on this computer.
About two of these will actually happen, I'm sure.

definitely to keep doing well in school, and to get the car I want when I start driving. This is pretty much on my parents though, so I just have to be good for them, XD
Oh, and too keep in shape for sure, but that shouldn't be hard with all the sports I participate in.

I don't believe in New Year's resolutions because they are for people with flaws. ;)
- Getting a job. Times are tough (http://rpgworldcomic.com/d/20001021.html) right now (to the point I was JUST about to be hired but the company stopped hiring in the last minute), but I hope it gets better later on.
- Getting people to realize that new year resolutions are simply plans you make for the future and don't necessarily constitute a flaw. If anything, they are for people with visions and desire of success. ;)

Concrete plans are to finish remodeling my house. That was my main resolution for 2008 and since then I've gotta a new roof, kitchen, patio, stoop, fence work and front door. What's left for 2009 is remodeling my bathroom and organizing a new collection room for my Godzilla stuff.
I'd also like to get a new job by next fall.

Hmm....not really. Last year's resolution was starting my fanfic, but did that happen? I'll try again this new year, but I can't guarentee it.
Another one is that I wanna go to Yellowstone this summer, I've only been there twice within a span of almost 20 years.

Well, I'm going to try to get a job next year, but I don't know if it's a New Year's resolution. Isn't a New Year's resolution supposed to be something that you weren't trying to do before but you will do in the next year? I've been looking for a job for five months.

My new year's resolution is to lose weight till I reach my ideal weight. I currently weigh more than 230 pounds. My goal is to weigh less than 170. How I'm going to do this won't be easy. But it won't be hard either. What I'm going to do to reach my goal is to burn a minimum of 1,000 calories at the Planet Fitness I go to almost daily. I'm also going to walk to certain restaurants and back to PF. I won't eat much in those places.

- Reach my goal weight - Been doing the Weight Watchers thing with great success but still have some to go.
- Run a 5K - I'm pretty close to this already so it's just going to take a little bit more training on my end; probably in the summer sometime once softball has ended for the year.
- Get serious about what deciding what I'm going to do after graduation - I graduate in May of 2010, but still am not completely sure about what I want to do with my degree. I have a general idea but no clue where to go from there.

Hmmm...I hope you're not planning to lose weight solely from doing cardio. Diet and strength training are much more effective. Actually, if you're burning 1,000 calories doing cardio alone that's probably going overboard. That's what, an hour on the treadmill every day? That's way too much. You're just going to end up burning off muscle if you're not careful.

A diet, any diet, probably isn't necessary, nor do I think it'll work. I'm doing more of a "calorie intake" strategy to lose the weight I have. If I burn off more calories than I consume daily, I'll have a calorie intake. For example, if I burn off 3,000 calories and consume 2,500 daily, my calorie intake would be 500. But if the calorie intake is too high (above 1,000 calories), that could be unhealthy. Since I already eat a lot, I'm likely to not have a calorie intake too high. As for cardio, my exercise routine is going to include 32 minutes on a treadmill (including a two-minute cool down) to get warmed-up, 35 minutes on an elliptical machine, and another 35 minutes on another elliptical machine. Ellipticals burn off calories faster than most other machines and don't put as much stress on the exerciser who uses them. Using those three machines will get me to burn just over 1,000 calories. When walking to rerstaurants and back, an additional average of 522 calories will be burned daily from that. I've done this a few times and I feel I'm already used to it.

Great to hear someone here's doing a run (Purplehaired). I might do a half-marathon next fall if I find some training time but I'll likely settle for a 10k.
Anyway, last year I had some muddled resolutions but I never did them because the excuses kept coming. Also, I never wrote them down on stone. So this year I'm going to have it in writing.
1. Get a BETTER job. Yeah, economy-shlomony, I can do better than a part time minimum wage job--in fact, I NEED to.
2. Run a race. 10k or half, as I said.
3. Expand my network. Right now my connections are pretty much 0. I would like to expand it to at least 5. If I'm going to advance from my current status, I need more eyes and ears to help me pick up what's going on in my area.
4. Get a new "BFF". Like, oh my gawd! A new BFF! Seriously, I think it's about time I start a real friendship with someone again. It gets tiring complaining to my family all the time.
5. Get back into the romantic game. Well, it's been a while for me. This goal is largely dependent on the other goals, though.
I have a certain amount of urgency this year as it is my first year in my 30s. Since I feel I've kind of wasted my 20s to a large extent, this is the decade where I have to do or die.

I have a select few.
-Get a job. I have something in the wing that I'm hedging my bets on, but I just really need to see what I can shoot for. Doesn't help that I graduated with a degree that I believe necessitates me to shoot for higher goals and so forth.
-Be more open and friendly. Personally for the past few months I have the strangest feeling that I haven't been really a sociable person, and many people who have tried to be friends with me have subsequently I believe given up on me, and when I try to be friendly I'm subsequently well... shunned I believe I'm not sure. So that's something I'm trying to gun and get out of my comfort zone for. *sigh* If only people were open in telling me that I'm very deficient in terms of what consists of being a friend, but I digress.
-Try not to take life too seriously. I like to think that I don't, but I can't help but still do and well... taking life seriously isn't all too pleasant a thing to do.

102 minutes of cardio and no strength training?!? That's crazy! Why are you switching elliptical machines in the middle anyway? Drop the last two sets of ellipticals and spend an hour doing strength training three days a week. And I'm not sure what you mean by dieting doesn't work, since you already seem to be counting calories. Unless you're simply guessing the amount of calories you eat.
You know, I remember in college I used to wear myself out running on a treadmill and wondering why I never lost weight. For some reason, I never even considered dieting. I guess I always felt that dieting was for lazy people who didn't like exercise or something. But, after I graduated college I was determined to lose fat and I read up on the internet. I despised the idea of dieting, but all the material that I read said that if I ever want to lose my gut I needed to diet. Food was one of the few things in life that made me feel happy and I didn't want to give it up. But, I thought about all the people in the world who were able to overcome their addictions to hard drugs. If someone can overcome their addiction to heroin or cocaine then I can overcome my love for unhealthy foods.

This is just my $0.02.
102 minutes of cardio and no strength training?!? That's crazy!
This isn't 102 minutes non-stop. I'll be taking 10-minute breaks in between these exercises. It's nothing close to crazy unless I'm trying to push myself to a point I'm not used to instead of going at a pace I can handle.
Why are you switching elliptical machines in the middle anyway? Drop the last two sets of ellipticals and spend an hour doing strength training three days a week.
One of the ellipticals, the Precor EFX546 will get me prepared for the other elliptical, one with more resistance. Using the Precor EFX546 will prepare me for the more higher resistance elliptical. I would definitely recommend the Precor EFX546 whether or not you are new to exercising or have been doing it for so long. I used to use this machine every time for a half-hour workout whenever I went to the YMCA back when I was a teenager. I wouldn't use any other machine. And as I said before, the calories burner faster on ellipticals than other exercise machines.
And I'm not sure what you mean by dieting doesn't work, since you already seem to be counting calories. Unless you're simply guessing the amount of calories you eat.
I'm not going to plan on a "diet" because I'm going to need the foods I already eat just to remain healthy. I'm definitely going to need the carbs to have energy, for example. Without energy, I wouldn't be healthy. There's actually a website that can help people like me keep track of not just the calories I've consumed and burned, but the pounds I've gained and lost as well. http://www.caloriesperhour.com Over the first month, I'm expecting to lose 9 pounds if I have a calorie deficit of 1,000 every day. Any more than that would be too much, so I'm as of now in a good position.

Losing weight takes time, and if you go in the right direction doing so, you'll still be healthy. The reason I'm choosing exercise is because the more I do it, the more I'll be used to it (and I'm used to it already after a few days of workouts). I'll have more energy over time (if I have the carbs), more oxygen to the mind to think better, and less stress. If exercise helped me in the past, It'll help me today.

Yes, it is. You shouldn't do more than an hour of cardio a day, especially if you're just starting out. The body learns to adapt very quickly. You might lose a lot of weight at first, but soon your body will get used to it and you'll have to work that much harder to continue to see results.

You mean you're using one machine to warm up for the other machine? I suppose that makes sense, but I don't see why you would need a 30 minute warm up.

Ummm...what? I never suggested a low carb diet. Those fad diets are all garbage and are just different methods of starving your body. When I say diet I don't mean a fad diet, I just mean to eat healthier food and watch your calories. It's good that you're counting calories, but I'm still not sure what exactly you're eating. If you already have a relatively healthy diet then maybe you don't need to change your diet. But, if you're eating a ton of refined sugars and trans fat then you will still lose weight from doing cardio, but you're going to lose muscle, not fat. Maybe the problem is that you're not sure what eating healthy entails, which is understandable, as I didn't really understand what eating healthy meant until after I graduated college. I could link you to some fitness forums if you want more info on eating healthier.

You don't have to choose, nor would I suggest that you simply stop doing cardio in favor of dieting. You can diet, strength train, and do cardio if you have the time. You clearly have time to strength train if you're doing an hour and a half of cardio a day. Diet is another story as I'm don't know what your schedule is nor do I know what your current diet is, but you can always find ways to improve your diet regardless of your individual situation.

My goals:
1. Stop binge eating. That bad habit is somehow related to all of my problems.
2. Overcome my social anxiety problem. I have had this for years, and it causes serious distress.

I think I'll finally exercise regularly, read through most of the unfinished books that I own (there are a lot), promptly pay off what credit card debt I've got, and do what I can to improve the TZ Wiki as much as possible.
Aside from that, I imagine that I'll be trying to expand my interests as always. So much to see, so much to know. In fact, I just thought of this, I'll make sure that I've been through all the different museums in DC. There are some that I know I've missed even though I've been in the area since I started college, and that just won't do.

Been planning for weeks now. 2008 wasn't a good year for me and not in the sense of me being a victim. My hopes and plans:
- Determine direction. I graduated last year and effectively took the rest of the year off. I now need to find my direction and determine where I go next. The first step should be finding a job, even if it's just A job to generate some cash as a first step.
- Be more positive. Over the years, I've naturally come to assume the worst. I didn't used to be this bad and so I'm hoping for a change in character. This includes trying to be more positive and to stop thinking unnecessary stands are somehow going to save the world. However, at the same time I realise I need to be careful just who I listen to and this isn't an open invitation for people who dislike aspects of my personality to dictate my behaviour.
I left a bad taste in various people's mouths this year and I want to correct that, moving forward to be more someone that can be trusted and less of a doubter.
- Become less of a packrat. This is behaviour I think I get from a mix of my parents. I want to be less materialistic, hopefully buying less and selling off some effectively useless items I've held onto for years. I collect certain things but over the last year it's become somewhat suffocating.

1. Getting a new job. I'm thankful to have one right now, don't get me wrong, but my tank has been on empty at that place for the past year. Time to do something I truly enjoy.
2. Get back on workout regiment. Starting with simple stuff I can do at home like jumping jacks, push-ups, & sit-ups. As well as going back to the gym.
3. Supressing my social anixety. I never had a problem with this until my middle school days, & I wanna get back to the days before then.
4.Putting my ideas for fictional stories to paper and making them grow instead of having them swiming endlessly in my head.
5. Being more assertive & decisive.
6. Thanking a trip back to Cali & seeing my old friends. Been putting that off for too long.

He was saying that since he doesn't have to share a car that finding a job should be too hard, and I just thought I'd give him a little wake up call that finding a job in this economy is going to be no piece of cake. I didn't mean to sound angry, though, yes, I am rather frustrated with this economy.
