How come cartoon network shows today seem to have 78 episodes instead of the 52 episodes like courage the cowardly dog, cow and chicken and others use to have. It use to be a rule no matter how good ratings were, shows could not go past 52 episodes.

The new rule is ironically no mater how good the series it can't go over 78 episodes

So shows today on cartoon network get 78 episodes not 52 episodes.

The new rule is ironically no mater how good the series it can't go over 78 episodesI refuse to believe that such a rule has ever existed. If Cartoon Network had an animated program that was as successful in the ratings as “SpongeBob SquarePants”, I assure you that it would continue to receive new episodes as long as it maintained those ratings.

I think that they feel by 78 episodes, the idea of the show is wearing thin.

Depends on the show's popularity.

...And I still can't believe that there are fans out there who think that 78 episodes isn't enough.

^ What he said. If Chowder continues to get consistently good ratings and continues at the same pace (CN ordered 49 episodes in less than a year), it may be the first CN original to break the barrier.

I hate looking at the ratings but if a show has a vewiership and the creative team has stories to tell then a show should keep going. There is no reason to stop a show if it still has steam left and a strong following...

Unless the series' creator(s) has expressed a desire to move on after 78 episodes. Why should a show go on forever if it's creator is ready to call it a series? There are DBZ fans who are still complaining that their roster of 256 episodes isn't enough. How much is too much?

Personally, I'm usually ready to move on from a series once it starts approaching 100 episodes, but that's just me.

Thats why I mentioned that if a creator has stories to tell and ratings are strong then they should keep the shows coming. It comes down to a classic case of cancelling the show when the well is dry...

Agreed. A series should go on for however long the creator and his/her creative staff is willing to work on it. But when the creator is ready call it quits and move on to other things, then the fans should be mature enough to accept that.

Do you believe that every television series should end production when they reach 78 episodes? Is that like the magic number to call it quits or something?

That sentence actually made my head hurt. Congratulations.

I think it should depend on the "episodes-per-year" rate. I mean, most of the highest-rated CN originals lasted seven years on-and-off---Dexter's Lab (1996-2003), PPG (1998-2005) and Johnny Bravo (1997-2004) are perfect examples. Even Ed, Edd and Eddy was lucky enough to last EIGHT years (1999-2007). However many episodes the creators and producers can compact into that time frame should be the shelf life of the series. To be honest, I originally thought KND would last until 2009, since it debuted in 2002.

And while we're on the episode count subject, are we counting groups of two 11-minute or three 7-8-minute shorts as ONE or is each short being counted as one?

The entire half-hour is being counted as one episode, for the purposes of this thread. Also, I understood what Ducktales_Fan said. But NO ONE ever really said that every show should end at that point dude.

Fans sure weren't mature about the cancellation of Courage. I remember seeing many petitons about this show being canceled. I also remember seeing a few Cow and Chicken petitions but not as popular ones. I think the reason for this though was that both these shows were popular but lasted 52 episodes instead of the 65 or 78 episodes that most high rated Cartoon Network originals last.
