View Full Version : The "What Did You Get For Christmas?" Thread

Yes, I know it's a few days early. But I know there are probably a bunch of us who might start getting Christmas presents before the 25th, either from friends, family members we won't see on Christmas day or perhaps even co-workers. But if this thread is a problem a mod can feel free to close it until we get closer to Christmas.
I hosted a Christmas party for my friends last night. Got really drunk, stayed up really late, watched a lot of Christmas specials, ate a lot of crap and blew out my voice. But it was worth it. Plus I got a lot of cool gifts:
A talking smoke and carbon monoxide alarm (and odd gift to be sure but maybe it might save my life one day)
A Wall-E 2009 calendar
A Spongebob Christmas ornament
$25 Best Buy Gift Card
A pair of mini speakers for my ipod (and batteries to use with them)
A pair of Stewie pajama pants
A Wii men's pajama set (which I'm actually dying to try on)
Anyone else?

Well it was not exactly a Christmas gift but it was something I planned on asking for which is "The Dark Knight". I'm not going to watch it until my brother comes from Seattle next week since it will be something good for me, my brother, and my Mom to spend time together again.

My mom got me a 2009 Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull calendar the other day. She said if she wrapped it I probably would have known what it was, so I could just have it early.

The softball team did a Secret Santa back at the beginning of the month and my person got me a grab bag full of fun little stuff like fuzzy gloves, body wash, bubble bath, headbands and hair ties, lip balm, and Jolly Ranchers. Very cute and very useful.
My roommate got me a purple striped scarf and a duffel bag since I was complaining I didn't have a good one, haha.

Well, I already know all I'm getting for Christmas, but to keep it fair, I won't tell you all right now all that I'm getting on Christmas day.
What I have beforehand, though, is quite sweet. From my loving uncle, I got $35 worth of comic books from our comic shop of choice, including the first Sonic paperback. That, and $100 from another uncle, and I'm expecting even more money from my stepmother.
My parents didn't know what to get me; either that, or I wasn't clear enough in telling them what I want for Christmas and my birthday (12/17). So last Sunday, they took me to Best Buy so that they can give me what I want without me being disappointed; I didn't appreciate last year's gift- a new HDTV for myself- at Christmastime because I wanted money (don't worry,I love my tv now). I helped them select a video camera that can record onto an SD card (along with a 4GB SDHC card) so I can shoot video and a 400GB Cherry Red Western Digital Portable Hard Drive because I need more memory. Heck, this doesn't even count the fact that the day before, my parents switched carriers from Sprint/Nextel to AT&T and I got a spiffy new slider phone- the Samsung A737- out of the deal.:):D
BTW, I got the hard drive for my birthday, along with a 1600 Microsoft Points card from my bother and his wife.
As for what I'm giving them, well, I'm repeating what I did last year and giving both couples a $25 gift card to a restaurant. The only difference is instead of last year's Bonefish Grill/Outback (a Bonefish card will work at Outback and vice versa), they're both getting TGI Friday's gift cards. I blame Friday's spokesperson/Food Network chef Guy Fieri.

So far I've gotten a little Merry Christmas note signed by Joel Hodgson (which came with my order of Cinematic Titanic DVDs that I'll get on Christmas day) and a Barnes and Noble gift card (which I'll spend in a little while).

Last Thursday, our comedy club had a Secret Santa with a "gag gift" theme using a limit of $10. I got this giant box of wheat crackers that was empty inside except for a Phoenix Wright comic book that I had no idea even was licensed in the US. Some other people got presents in the same fashion while others got real gag presents such as a fake pringles bottle that when opened, snake streamers would fly out and a whoopee cushion packed with prank toys inside a Chinese take out box.
Today, I'm exchanging gifts with some friends at the mall later so I'm excited for that.

Who gives out christmas presents before christmas? I've never heard of this. Like, I've heard of giving out wrapped presents before, but usually people don't open them up until Christmas.
My Grandparents, my Aunt, and my Sister got me an 8GB IPod Nano. It was a Graduation present really, but it's all I've gotten this month so far.

I got some chocolate covered espresso beans from my aunt, who gave them to me yesterday while we were doing our last minute shopping. My family (me, mom, sister) and I, along with two of my aunts, always go to Bay City Mall a couple days before Christmas to do shopping, then we eat at Applebee's or something and one aunt gives us each an early gift.
I also know that mom got me at least two CDs (Lady Antebellum's self-titled debut and Long Road Out of Eden by the Eagles).

Well, it wasn't for Christmas, but for my birthday I got a San Jose Sharks beanie, hoodie, and pajama pants. My actual b-day is today, but because of seeing the Sharks play tonight, we decided to celebrate last night instead.

Me and my close friends exchanged a few gifts yesterday- nothing massive, just cute little things that we can joke about. I used to buy for alot of people but with nobody having any money we just stuck to each other this time.
-One of my friends got me a key-chain that says 'Come Here Little Boy', making fun of the fact that her 10 year old brother thinks I'm bringing him to prom
-15$ gift card to Itunes
-bag of dark chocolates
-Sunglasses (I tend to break most of mine rather quickly)

Haha, tell us how that one turns out.

I wonder who got the better deal...

Why is that mean? I hear it's very popular right now.
Mostly because many people consider it to be painfully derivative tripe, and I'm willing to bet that Raven was just such a person (and most likely, the gift-giver knew it.)
In any case, thusfar:
-Desktop computer. $400 Black Friday Wal-Mart model. Had been planning on building my own, but with a RAM upgrade and a new video card, I can make do. Mostly got this in exchange for me giving my laptop to my sister.
-Some shirts, throw blankets, and socks.
-Random candy and mints
-Bottle of Jager from my sister
I'm still meeting up with my dad tomorrow for his gift, it'll probably just be cash.

What I Got for Christmas
(aside from gift cards for JCPenney and Old Navy which cement our mutual agreement that I need new clothes)
Every year for Christmas and/or my birthday my older sister gives me a new Monty Python toy. One year it was a Black Knight with detachable limbs. Another year it was a stuffed dead parrot. I've also gotten a knight who says Ni plushie and a Black Beast of Aaaaaaargh. This year it was a "horse action figure"--namely two coconut halves.
Also:
Two lap desks (one with a wooden top and leather cushion which I intend to use for drawing, and a plastic one with a beaded cushion for my laptop)
An Eric Clapton CD
A new fleece jacket
New slippers
Some books on Japan (a Japanese phrase book, one on Japanese art, and another on Japanese culture)
A Japanese garden monthly calendar
A check from my other grandma
Young Frankenstein and The Producers on DVD
My younger sister likes the Narnia movies, and I got her Prince Caspian not knowing that my mother and grandmother got it for her as well.

what i received--
columbia winter coat - a really nice gift from my folks. i don't need one, but apparently my mom didn't like me wearing my thermally insulated carhart hoodie, which happens to be warmer than the coat they bought me. oh well. it's still really nice :)
exercise hoodie with matching sweats - this is one of those presents that came out of nowhere. i never told my mom i started exercising again. these will come in handy for those long wintry jogs
betty crocker cook book - i never really "cooked" before, but when asked, my excuse was "if i had a cook book, maybe i'd be a little more adventurous. my sister-in-law called my bluff. they expect a full out gourmet meal next friday
vikings lone sleeve t - go vikes! *norse horn blast*
and, as with every year, my parents and grandparents paid me back for the gifts i bought them... ruins the point of christmas, in my opinion, but it does get difficult to buy gifts for everyone
what i gave--
baby nephew - "how the grinch stole christmas" and "curious george's christmas". kid can never have enough books
dad - camoflage jacket for work or hunting or whatever he wants to use it for
mom - space heater for the bathroom
sister (we draw names) - "animal crossing: city folk". i was severely against this game. "how can they just rehash the previous games like that?!?" i proclaimed. but, now? i'm hooked again. i'll be buying it tonight
grandpa - box of meat and cheeses straight from wisconsin! mooooo!!!
other grandpa - same thing
grandma - stuffed santa. i buy her a stuffed animal/figurine every christmas. it's a tradition... and then she promptly pays me back for it with her gift... sigh...

Listen, I'm not trying to be a jerk. Not at all. But you can't just show up like SaMaster has and say stuff like this. I mean, there's nothing technically wrong about what he's saying. But you just shouldn't brag about how well off you are in polite company. You shouldn't do it on the internet and you shouldn't do it in real life. That sort of thing just rubs people the wrong way and it's not going to make SaMaster very popular around here.
That's just my two cents. Hope I haven't offended anyone.
And just to keep it on topic, here's the rest of the things I got for Christmas:
$20 Best Buy gift card
$25 Sears gift card
An Axe gift set (from a parents of one of my students, I always get stuff like that)
A picture frame that I'm probably not going to use
A coffee mug I'm also probably not going to use
"The Tales of the Beedle the Bard" - anyone here read this? Is it good?
A cook book
A docking station for my PS3 controllers
A full set of state quarters
A Ford rum glass/coaster set (from my grandmother, my late grandfather was a car guy)
A bottle of rum (but not from my grandmother, which was an interesting coincidence)

"The Tales of the Beedle the Bard" - anyone here read this? Is it good?I got it for Christmas as well and read it in a couple of hours. It was fun and I enjoyed it. The stories themselves are good, but Dumbledore's commentary on them is really what makes it great.

So how was your Hanukkah? some pretty nice gifts I see.
sad its over though, I love lighting the candles and such!
It was nice; my grandmother came up for 2 nights without confirming until the day before. I took turns with my sister lighting the candles.
I don't see how posting a list is bragging. That's what this thread is for, right? If he thinks the necklace is not fancy, he is entitled to that opinion.
SaMaster14
12-30-2008, 06:10 PM
I'm not trying to brag. I got nice things, but thats is what this thread is asking for me to post, what I got for the holidays.
I'm using the 10k towards my first car, and the other cash is just for fun I guess.
My godfather is very generous, he gives me stuff when I don't even ask for it. I'm so thankful to have him, he is great. My parents got me the $500 gold necklace, and its plain, since well, again, i'm not trying to sound like a jerk, but my godfather had given me a gold necklace that could be worth almost $4,000. Again, I don't ask for these things, he just gives them to me.
Most of the cash was from my relatives, my parents got me the 360, phone and necklace, my godfather gave me the $10,000 for hanukkah.
I'm sorry if I sould like a materialistic jerk, but I'm not, its just that this is the stuff I got for the holidays. I'm not gonna go around flaunting money and stuff, it doens't affect me as a person, and especially on a forum like this, it really shouldn't mean anything, i'm not trying to prove myself or anything of that sort.
