This was from 2002 so it's probably been discussed before, but I have never seen this list until now.

Tom and Jerry should be a lot higher than 50 IMO.

My opinion on the list:
Beavis & Butt-head 4th? I don't think so
Homer Simspon is a funny character but worthy of 2nd
Tom & Jerry 50? They deserve a lot more than that
Where is Goofy? Also, Mickey and Donald are both ranked too low
Angelica Pickles doesn't deserve to be 7th.
Who is Cartman?
Gerald McBoingBoing shouldn't be on that list, especially over Scooby!
Bugs Bunny probably deserves the his spot

I dont think this list is very accurate. Tom and Jerry should never be ranked that low. Why isnt dexter on the list, and scooby doo and mickey mouse are also ranked too low.

Who is Cartman?
Eric Cartman from South Park.

Oh, definitely not worthy of #10.

I remember this list from 2002, and now, as then, it's completely messed up.
For one thing, there is NO WAY that Pikuchu should've ranked above Mickey Mouse. At all.
And why give Homer Simpson a spot and then give another to Bart and Lisa? Why not just list the whole family together as The Simpsons? Similarly, Boris & Natasha shouldn't have been listed separately from Rocky & Bullwinkle; they should've all been listed as Rocky & his Friends.
Yes, it was wrong that Mickey and Donald got a mention but not Goofy. If any characters from the Mouse House were going to be listed, it should've been Disney's Big Three.
Also, 3 DC superheroes earn a spot on the list, but no Marvel characters? You have to play equal time.
And why put Angelica Pickles on the list but not Tommy? Tommy was the star of Rugrats, not Angelica. If nothing else, the 2 of them could've been listed together, or just list the whole gang as the Rugrats.
And finally, I agree with rainstorm46 that if the Powerpuff Girls made the list (and given when this list was made, part of me is cynical enough to believe that the only reason the PPGs made the list at all was because they had a much hyped movie coming out that year), then Dexter should've earned a spot. Dexter's Lab was the 1st Cartoon-Cartoon, after all. If Dexter hadn't been a success, then there would've never been a Powerpuff Girls series.

I have to question the logic in putting one-shot characters such as the Grinch and Bill (from Schoolhouse Rock's "I'm Just a Bill") on that list as well. Shouldn't one-shot characters have a separate list all of their own?

Wow, out of 50 I recognized 49. Only one that threw me was Tom Terrific. Still, this list is whacked big time.

I agree with everyone here. This is like hummingbird on dope.
Tom and Jerry at the bottom of the list? Seriously, that's jacked. They, Mickey, Donald, and Felix the Cat all need to be ranked higher. And I also agree that Goofy and Dexter need to be on there too. The only good thing on there is that Bugs got the top spot.
BTW, as much as I like the show, how the hell did Arthur get on that list?

Unwavering support from DTH1971, perhaps? He's the only adult I know who's an Arthur fan. :-P (Not that that's a bad thing.)

I'm an Arthur fan too, but since the show was made in 1996, it shouldn't really count for an all-time greatest, IMO.

Well, technically, The Grinch wasn't a one-shot cartoon character. There were three Grinch specials (though fans may or may not be aware of two of them).

I remember those. The other 2 were Halloween is Grinch Night (1977) and The Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat (1982). Still, I think that characters from one-shots and specials should have had their own list rather than sharing with long established recurring or series characters.

That list was a joke.
Now if you want a more realistic analysis, check out the post I made a year ago entitled- 50 Greatest Cartoon Characters Analysis. Just use the search engine, and note that I gave explainations for each pick.

Because I do know he is. When I was reading it I was thinking Cart Man like a superhero :p He is funny, just not worthy of being one of the greatest cartoons ever.

This list is very inaccurate, for a few reasons all of you have mentioned, but one thing to remember is that a majority of best and worst lists are inaccurate. It is simply the opinion of someone, nothing else. I do not know how I would change this list, but I would most certainly change it.

Yeah, this list feels like a joke. Beavis and Butt-head definitely shouldn't be up so high. I agree that giving a spot to Homer and then another one to Bart and Liza feels unnecessary. They could have grouped the whole family instead. As much as I love Pikachu, I completely agree that Mickey Mouse should rank higher. I was also surprised with Daffy's ranking since I think he should have been in the top ten instead. I don't see why Donald Duck was put on such a lower rank compared to Mickey and they definitely should have given something to Goofy. Angelica should be no where near the top ten here. I didn't think she was that good on the series at all. I would honestly given it to Tommy, or at least just mention the Rugrats cast, but they would be towards the bottom portion of the list, in my opinion.

It was a black-and-white* animated series that aired on CBS in the late '50s on "Captain Kangaroo." It was created by Gene Deitch, who has a poor reputation in the animation fandom due to his work on "Tom & Jerry"
Despite not appearing on television for more than 40 years it's still fondly remembered.
* - Literally. Everything, including the characters and the backgrounds, are just black lineart on white surface. No gray shades or anything.

I agree with the above. Also, Gumby and Gerald McBoingBoing are overrated; they are uninteresting and therefore should not be in the top 25. Beavis & Butthead and Ren & Stimpy should be on a 50 worst cartoons list, as they are simply disgusting.
As for the classics that I feel should be ranked higher, Wile E. Coyote & Road Runner, Yogi Bear & Boo Boo, Woody Woodpecker, and Tom & Jerry all deserve to be in the top half. They are truly funny characters whose cartoons are forever without equals.
A lot of my faves didn't make the list. Where is Huckleberry Hound, Snag, Quick Draw, Jinks and other classic H-B characters? Archie is also missing and so is Chilly Willy, and the Pink Panther, one of my faves growing up. And what is Bobby Hill doing on the list? Hardly a household name. Heck, people know more about Boomhauer from that show. At least no Family Guy characters were listed.

Well there wouldn't be, considering that the list was made in 2002, before the big Family Guy rebirth and renaissance.

My opinions:
Popeye, Charlie Brown/Snoopy, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Tom and Jerry, Felix the Cat and Betty Boop deserve to be farther up
Beavis & Butthead? I don't think so.
Bugs Bunny is definitely the first.
I like SpongeBob, but I don't know if he's earned a place that far up.
I don't know… Homer is a good character, but I think maybe Daffy Duck should take second… Or Charlie Brown/Snoopy

If these are someone's personal opinions, then that's okay. If its a list of what they think are the most important cartoon characters ever, then this list is messed up.

Bugs Bunny the first, though not for his "What's Opera, Doc" waning too cute years but for the 1940s, and Daffy, again, his pre-rock, Depression-to-Korean War era period.
So...and here goes a VERY unqiue but historically interesting one! Series characters only- Notes follow..[pairs and groups counted togther]
THIS is my top fifty...Some may open younger eyes,..
1.Bugs Bunny -1940 -circa 1952
2.Daffy Duck -1937-1952
3.Yogi Bear -1958-1962, no remakes though I occasionaly liked "Galaxy Goofups" for making one out of Yogi, vis-a-vis his other rebirths, likewise Huck.
Without numbering so much, a re-edit of my formerly long post:
Tigger in his Winchell eraAll of the 1957-62 Hanna-Barbera series
Also many once popualr characters like
Linus the Lionhearted-Cereal sponsors, sure, but had their own non-advertising stories..though if you saw this Rory Racoon, a supporting segment character, guards corn, in real life tied to Corn Flakes a la Kellogs. Sugar Bear was from the same cereal line-Sugar Crisp., Sheldon Leonard, Carl Reiner, Gerry Mahteews, Bob McFadden< Ruth Buzzi, and Jesse White were among the more pormient voices.
I'll put Art Clokey's Davey and Glotiah and Gumby mucdh highe.r
Ignoring all the theatrical cartooon series of any kind, and just going with TV for brevity,
TOTAL TV series
Ealry H-B series
Beany and Cecil's 1960s series
Alvin Show, not the later version'
Regarding Archie, to that one poster who complained baout the absence:
I think if you rewatched the entire Fimation series, whose lack of knowledge of Reggie and Veronica's milk of human kindness---meaning The Riverdale teens were lucky if Ronnie and Reggie had ANY---you'd know WHY the animated Archie WASN';T included! [Daffy Duck's later persona is the opposite of that path, turning mean while the two "R"'s in Archive-Reggie Mantle and Ronnie Lodge, lost THEIR meaness!)
I think maybe a worst aniamted TV series--IF we can keep flamage out, and believe it or not, I think that we CAN, could be a loist subject..[and it's OK to list like "most by this or that studio" to save space if you want..:)]

Bugs Bunny the first,
Steve, I guess it boils down to what the creator of the poll meant by "greatest." And, then again, the people responding to the poll had their own definitions. Most entertaining? Most influential? Most historically important? Longevity? A combination?
I would think seven years since this poll was compiled, the world realises Beavis and Butt-head cartoons were a flash in the pan, on the list solely because of their notoriety in being blamed for fatal house fires.
Bugs probably deserves to be No. 1 not only because his cartoons are well-crafted and funny (there are exceptions), if it hadn't been for his ubiquitousness on TV in the early days, cartoons might never have been seen as a viable product for television.
