Well, today someone I know was in a car accident. They only had minor damage for the most part, but heres the thing. I had been invited to go and he wore his seatbelt, and was luckely ok. As for me I almost always forget to wear a seatbelt, and im happy i didnt go. I was really shocked when I found this out, and yes, my friend is ok and NOT harmed, he did get a ticket though (for crashing a car wtf???) and his car is totaled.

lesson learned:

- Always wear a seatbelt

I almost got in a car accident myself yesterday. I saw an accident happening on the other side of the road -- looked like a pretty bad one, but it was hard to tell because it was dark. All I know is I saw a silhouette of something flipping in the air, possibly a car, possibly just part of a car, and there was lots of glass and some other debris at the scene. But that distracted me just long enough that I didn't notice that the cars in front of me had stopped, so I had to put on the brakes incredibly hard, which caused a lot of smoke and a rubber smell around my car for the next 5 minutes or so.

And now that I've been serious, I just have to point out that seeing this thread title next to your username is kind of funny.

I spun out on the off ramp today while going to work. Did a single loop counterclockwise and then did 3 loops clockwise. My car hit the curb and came to a stop. I realized that it was actually kind of fun (since nobody was around me), did an all systems check and continued to work.

A few months ago, my mom and sisters got in a car accident and survived with minor injury but had to go to the chiropractor for a while. About a year ago, I never wore a seat belt because it chokes my neck. Now I wear it except in the back seat because I'm so fat I sit on the seat belt connector.

Glad everyone is okay. The law firm I work at handles car accidents, and we've seen some bad ones. :ack:

Well I'm going to relate at least 2 stories here and in both instances I was wearing my seatbelt, and this does prove that seatbelts do save lives.

I will also add in a tragic story about an accident as well as someone did die and they too were wearing their seatbelt.

Now in the two accidents that I had, which were about 20 years ago, (and forced me to give up driving forever), I was on a road that had become slick with moisture due to fog (I was in Northern California at the time), and I had my car spin approximately 180 degrees around having me facing northbound in southbound lanes. (of course my car also ended up bumping the center divider of the road and thus I had a broken tail light and a bent bumper but beyond that damage, I had no injuries.

In my second accident (which was my fault) I clipped a woman's car in the left rear section and even though I was going around her car at the traffic safe speed (35 mph), the collision was strong enough to knock the glasses off my face but because again I was wearing a seatbelt, the only damage to me was in fact the glasses being knocked off my face even though the right front fender was pushed all the way to the wheel well, and the right front headlight was busted.

Now as for the other story..

I read this story just recently on a major news wire and the person who died also was wearing their seatbelt. But the fact that they got killed isn't their fault.. They died because they were in a hearse that got into an accidnet and the casket (which was placed behind the passenger seat) flew up front and broke the person's neck.

The moral of the story? Seatbelts (and airbags) do save lives.. but if you are going to a funeral don't get into a hearse in the passenger seat.. else the funeral you go to might be your own.

Neither of these seem extreme enough to cause someone to give up driving forever.

Try being thrown around (without a seatbelt) in the back seat of a Dodge truck as it flips over and over again down an inclined highway median before finally coming to a stop upside down. I had to crawl across the roof of the truck and exited out the front passenger window, the only one that was broken and allowed an exit. Luckily myself nor my sister and best friend (who was also in the car) sufered any severe injuries. I still have some minor back pain and my friend can't remember the accident, but we're lucky it wasn't much worse.
